  • The Three Strand Plait Doubled, is probably one of the easiest of all the flat braids that can be tied using rope. The 3 Strand Plait is often used when creating the top loop of a bell rope. Simply weave the cordage together until you have created a long enough length to create the loop of your bell rope. This can also be used as one of the weaves when creating a decorative knotted picture frame.
Weave Formula: Outside Left Pair, Over Two to Centre, Outside Right Pair, Over Two to Centre and then repeat.
TOP TIP: I often find that when braiding any cordage, the first couple of weaves can be a little messy. So what I do is to do a couple of extra weaves, so that eventually the slightly scruffy bit can be avoided.
Also, it can often be difficult to calculate the correct amount of cordage to use. For a simpler braid or weave, I estimate for every inch of weave, I will require about 1 foot of cordage. A more accurate way of calculating the amount of cordage required, is to do a short section, to see how much line has been used. Then you can multiply that for the overall length that you want to achieve.
With any form of plait, braiding or Sennit, it is always best to go at a nice gentle pace and keep the tension in your lines at a constant. Always check to make sure that as your weave the line, there are no unwanted crossings of the line.

Nicely done. The written description and the visual make a good combo. I like this braid, it lays up fast, has many uses, and is very pleasing to the eye. Thanks John for another good tutorial.

This makes a great simple way of joining both ends and creating a decorative loop for the next knot on something fancy.

You are truly a master at knot-making and passing on the knowledge. You don't just instruct, but you teach! Therefore, I confer to you the title of Dr. Johnny Debt! Seriously though, I've actually migrated a few of my standard bevy of knots that I use for backpacking/camping to ones that I've never seen before - that are much simpler to construct - which I've seen on your channel and now adopted (especially some of the slip/tensioning and splicing knots). Thanks a lot!

Many thanks David for your kind comment. I have a personal set of knots that I use all the time, but I do look at other knots to see if they will replace of be added to my collection of useful knots.

I would like to make a belt with the plait. Is there anyway you can link me up to information on how to secure the two ends or basically end it period?

That's really good but it would have been more useful to start and finish this plait on something that would actually use it. Now we have to run around trying to figure that out ourselves. It would be nice have an application for the knots you show being tied.

I do have some older videos that show transitions to other knot. Are you thinking that you may want to do decorative knotwork?

Another nice clear video. How would you finish this braid?

Usually this is often used, once tied by bringing both ends together to create a decorative loop. Then another sequence of knots are use to say create a fender or small bell rope. Are you just getting into decorative knotwork?

@@KnottingKnots thank you! I enjoy making kumihimo braids and cords and have tried my hand at making net bags too. I love seeing how techniques stay the same or change between the different scales of thread, cord and rope. Your videos have been usefully applied to my smaller scale projects too.
