  • You know that feeling when it seems like everyone is trying to be a bigger victim than everyone else? And as long as someone presents themselves as a victim, no one is allowed to disagree with them or question them in any way? Our culture has put a premium on victimhood, and it has even infected the church. But Cooper Stuff is here to remind you that there are no victims in the kingdom! Today, we discuss our identity in Christ, having received sonship that we do not deserve. Then, we read a couple of articles-namely about David Platt’s McLean Bible church and a new book by Joshua Harris’s x-wife, Shannon Harris-to illustrate the incorrect worldview of victimhood that has infected Christianity.

I’m a “victim” of 90s purity culture. I entered into marriage at 21 as a virgin to a virgin. Am raising 3 amazing kids. Happier in my marriage 23 years in then ever before because we’ve put in the work. And now that my kids are older I’m continuing following my God given dreams as I begin my career as a Marriage and Family Therapist (ironic much).

I've been suicidal off and on sense age 14 because of all the crap I went through starting at age 10. But I'm not a victim. I'm a child of God, who stopped me from inacting my suicidal plan a total of 6 times over the years. It's sad to see some Christians basically worshipping themselves instead of the God of the Bible.

I don't think I've seen John so annoyed before...justifiably so! What stops me cold is how Shannon chose to marry Joshua, but remained in her selfish desires instead of seeking to help better others. Too much DIsney: I gots to follow my heart!

I think a great contrast to Shannon Harris is Rosaria Butterfield. She also up quite a lot as she became a pastor’s wife. However, Rosaria’s attitude could not be more different from Shannon.

I appreciate John being honest about some within the reformed movement being pushy about their beliefs. I went to a reformed church for a few months and left because the pressure to change what I believed regarding free will was very intense. Church leadership never wanted to know why I believed what I did but wanted me to fall in line or I couldn’t join. So thank you John for acknowledging that.

I feel bad for that woman.
    My birth story is hard.
It's hard for me to say this.
    I had 2 birth parents.
    Abuse me.
    Since I was a newborn.
    My birth mom
    Tried to hide my body.
    In the baby swing
My birth dad did horrible things to my body. Since I was a baby. He touched my private part.
    They got arrested.
People rushed me in the ambulance.
And I was in the hospital
    Fighting for my life.
The doctor said I wasn't going to live.
    But I lived.
    I am 23 now
    I'm disabled.
    I can't walk.
I have a breathing tube in my neck.
I used to have a feeding tube in my belly.
But now I got beautiful adopted parents.
    Is a true story.
    I want people to learn.
How to be a good parent?
    To your children.
It's hard for me to talk about this, did I get so emotional?
But thank you for listening. 🖤🖤

2- Excuses and Pride - All the victim culture is summed up in those two words. Its how the enemy began his attack in the garden and has cultivated it to infiltrate the church. There is always an excuse for evil actions rather than a confession of evil actions!
3- Soft weak men, leave such an open door in their hearts. We are meant to go through trials and stress our bodies. Thats one of the reasons I do my outdoor channel is to motivate people to get out and do hard things and challenge yourself with difficulty!

I think part of the problem is that Christians don't realize what it means that Christ paid the cost for our sin and therefore owns us. We belong to him and therefore our lives are not are own. Praise the Lord for that! God cherishes us so much because we belong to him and when we abide in His will we will richly experience His blessings.
Life is not about us, it's about our Creator.

Regarding Shannon Harris: It sounds like she has more of a grievance with Sovereign Grace Churches (which CJ Mahaney co-founded). That "denomination" (their words, not mine) has received many complaints and lawsuits. That I have heard and somewhat witnessed, they have an intrusive approach to each congregant's personal life, as if they can dictate how you should lead your family, etc. But again, she didn't have to marry Josh anyway.
My grandmother wanted to become a professional singer back in the 1950s. Her friend was ready to take her to a singing coach one night, but her father said no. My grandma got married to my grandpa and she had a very full life with variations on "success" that are in-line with biblical doctrine and contrary to feminism. She told me the story years ago, and when she seemed regretful, I said something like, "Well, if you did that, you may not have had kids and grandkids, and I wouldn't be here listening to you right now." She replied, "I never thought of it that way."

I wrote a book a few years ago called No Filter: A Beginner's Guidebook for Anyone Who has Ever Hated God, Others, or Themselves. The book's purpose was to rid people of the notion that they are entitled to a perfect life and are then justified to hate anyone who robs them of that, even themselves (for feeling too stupid or lame to achieve that life).
The first 2 chapters I talk people out of suicide/suicidal thoughts using scripture and my own experience in middle school. In the VERY NEXT chapter I speak against blaming shifting and the victimhood mindset, given that at least half of what drove me to my suicide attempt was the consequences of my own actions/behavior. (I was convinced that I was an innocent victim with absolutely nowhere to turn to because All-Powerful God had malevolently rigged the universe against me. To which, the 4th chapter deals with how God is not a malevolent bully).
I also talk about my own struggles with porn and how it was my coping mechanism to deal with the stressors of life (Something that God pointed out to me and encouraged me to write the book to work through my two demons of self-righteousness and self-loathing. That being, self-righteous when looking at other people and feeling like I deserved more than them as a reward for my holiness but self-loathing when I recognized I was being self-righteous again and then felt like I deserved nothing). My self-righteousness stressed me out for noticing how poorly other people behaved even after rebuking them with Scripture and common sense, causing me to want to vent because "Grr, what is wrong with you!". To which, the self-loathing I felt afterwards made me feel miserable and that I needed something to cheer me up. Furthermore, stressing out about the porn itself made me want to look it up even more, given it was my stress reliever. It was a vicious cycle. As I put it in the book l, "I lacked control of my body because I lacked control of my life".
I was 28 when I wrote it and I am 32 now. Covenant Eyes has since helped with the INTERNET aspect of those desires, but ultimate deliverance is found only in humilty, contentment, and surrender. That being, the way to gain self-control is to GIVE UP control.

My 17 year old daughter (huge Skillet fan - we raised her right😊) wrote a song for Mother's Day a few years ago. One line that made me cringe was "she gave up all her dreams for me." I never wanted them to feel that way, but I learned she felt greatly loved knowing I did it willing and "know her soul." I am so thankful to be the mother and wife Yah made me to be instead of the plan I had which was not excited for marriage or children. Abba knows best.

If I had a pastor tell me that I’d leave the church. No pastor has the right to tell anyone what their purpose is when they get married. That should be between the husband and the wife and the Lord and if you have dreams, and you want to follow those dreams, and your husband to be doesn’t want you to, then you don’t have to marry him. 🤷‍♀️
I am truly amazed at the number of people who literally put up with stuff they don’t like from the person that they’re going to marry, but never tell them and never do anything about it. I don’t know if people assume they can change the other person or they just think it will get better with marriage, but it doesn’t. There are some things you really need to work out before you get married, and be on the same page about. If something is truly bothering you the speak up and say something. You don’t have to go through it with marrying the person.
I definitely see issues with purity culture (and I’m a virgin in my 40s so I am all for purity lol) but I also believe that at some point you have to just take responsibility and move forward. Because you can’t change the past. And you don’t have to be a victim.

I always enjoy listening to you, John. You always make me laugh in every episode because you don’t yourself too seriously! I laughed uncomfortably when you said it bugs you when people use the term “imago dei” because they think it makes them look smart! I use it on occasion, but that’s mostly because I find it flows off the tongue a little better than “image of God”. It made me chuckle nonetheless! I also wanted to tell you that I’m probably part of that group that feels the same way as many others who were impacted by “purity culture” in the same way you described: that they felt like they were dirty if their bodies weren’t untouched before marriage. I struggled with the feelings of being unclean from my childhood to my early years of marriage because of being raped by my neighbors kids and being so young (5ish) I didn’t even understand what happened to me and none of my family believed (or they simply misunderstood and never desired to fully understand) me when I tried to describe what happened to me that day. So for over a decade I wrestled with this horrific experience that I never fully understood and thought I was dirty because the family NEVER talked about sex. I think it was probably because my parents had my siblings before they were married and were afraid we’d follow in their footsteps if they ever talked about sex! But the implication was sex=bad, so I thought I was bad since I was exposed to sexual abuse and then later on in my young adult years entered into manipulative relationships that made me feel even worse. Which I have since come to know I am worth more than what the lies of the enemy had told me I was. Nothing that has happened to me then or when I was a young adult define me. Only a Christ in me! Daughter of the king! ❤ Oh and btw, God gave me a wonderful husband who was willing to tell people that a baby was his that might’ve belonged to someone else because he cared so much for me when he expressed that he intended himself for me. What an excellent reflection of what Christ did for us. Took on our shame and sin to love us and redeem us!

There was once a point in time where, it seems, we were commanded to have nothing to do with apostates…I feel like I read that somewhere…
In all seriousness, though, I genuinely believe we are starting to see the separation of the sheep from the goats. It is no longer fashionable to merely call yourself a Christian. Soon, only those who are genuine believers will want to bear His name. This isn’t a popular thing to point out but as Christians we are called to crucify our flesh daily, sacrificing our own will for the sake of the Gospel.
It is hard to see those who once gave the appearance of being our brothers/sisters in Christ, drag Jesus’ name through the mud. It is, also, very difficult to realize they are leading some astray.
I agree with John, when he says we, as followers of Christ, need to step up and be “salt and light.” I don’t know if it would have made a difference with those like Josh Harris and his ex-wife or if they would have continued this path of heresy (or should I say “Harris-y”???) regardless. Either way, we have largely failed in our responsibility as the church/the bride of Christ collectively and on an individual basis. My prayer is that we will recognize this shortcoming and failure and will use it to motivate us to show the power of our living God in our lives…so we can go into the world and win many for His kingdom!

“My wife plays in a metal band” cracked me up. There are people dealing poorly with what the Bible says on all kinds of levels. We all emphasize some things and deemphasize others. Some sins are elected to an extreme and others ignored and seemingly treated as minor when all sin brings God’s wrath and requires repentance. It’s bad. In the case of purity culture people think it calls Christian women to be akin to Stepford wives when nothing could be further from the truth.

    • @charlottefreed3813
      @charlottefreed3813 10 месяцев назад

All sin brings God’s wrath, however there is sin that involves outright rejecting Christ and hardening one’s heart completely. That’s the extreme sin. Pedophilia, Satan worship, etc for example. In one of John’s epistles he talks about praying for a brother who has sinned that God will restore him, for a sin not leading to death. And he says “there is sin leading to death, I do not say he should pray about that”. Meaning for the sins involving outright rejection of Christ, there is no promise of redemption if they keep choosing that because the only redemption we have is in Christ.

What if I act so perfect and never hurt anyone and don't sin but keep getting victimized by those who do? It feels unfair. What's the point of continuing to be good and blameless if everyone else, including the rich and famous, just sins and easily gets forgiven? Should I just follow the flow and culture of the rest of Christians, including those in leadership positions like John Cooper?

I'll make one more comment. I honestly think Ray Comfort is right when he says the "church" is full of a lot of false converts who heard a feel good message, prayed a feel good prayer, and when times got hard, they left the faith they never really had.

It seems to me there are some men who have in the name of God created rules for women that are not scriptural. Norms that God never set down. That is a real thing, and a real problem. At the same time, our society at large and in some churches has a problem with the actual scriptural constraints placed on women and men by God.

Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."
Proverbs 30:26 "he conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;"
Psalms 89:26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
John 6:48 "I am that bread of life."
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.'"
Ezekiel 47 speaks of a river that flows out of the throne of God where ankle-deep water goes to knee-deep, then waist-deep, all the way to the point that you couldn't get across.
Most who fly themselves under the banner of Christian wallow around in an ankle-deep relationship with the lord, some just grace their toes across the water every now and again.
Seek love with the creator, love him with all your remembering and imagining, for love does many things two of which is always believes and hopes.
Go deep, see. Hebrews 11: 1 and 6. Hold onto him with all your heart. Pray for wisdom, pray without ceasing: don't go a day without it. Read the KJV

Pual boasted in christ. He wasn't proud for doing so. Reformed folks know we are sinners and need to address our sin first, but we know what we believe and we speak it and the Bible calls that boldness. People feeling conviction for their sins accuse calvanists for being proud or angry and it because people don't know that kindness and love are based in truth first.

    • @spartansix2323
      @spartansix2323 10 месяцев назад +2

It is because we as the church as a whole have abandoned the idea of being holy to the Lord. Holiness is a forgotten word among us and we now try to operate from a point that excuses sin in favor of “love”. The truth is that if we leave people to rest in their sin we don’t really love them or God because He did not leave us in our sin. Holiness has “become” a foul almost cuss word in our society.

I am not reformed. But I don’t exactly agree with arminianism. What can you explain provisionalism in a couple sentences?

    • @GlorytoElShaddi
      @GlorytoElShaddi 10 месяцев назад

      Absolutely! Provisional view is:
      1. We are born depraved but God provides what is needed for us to remain responsible.
      2. People left alone have no hope but God has chosen to provide a way for the salvation of anyone from any nation. Not just elected certain people for salvation.
      3. People need healing but God provides all that is needed for anyone to look to the Son in faith and be healed.
      4. People cannot believe without grace, so God has graciously sent the gospel, His Spirit that provides everyone the ability to willing come and be reconciled to God.
      5. People who believe are provided with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of their salvation.
Essentially, God chose to provide a way for free will creatures to come to salvation. However, we must chose God. There is no unconditional election.

@@GlorytoElShaddi Ty! So I would say I agree with all these but I raise an eyebrow at number 3. If you are saying it’s Gods will that all Christians be healed and the only reason a person is not healed is because they don’t have enough faith, then I would disagree with that point. God heals! But I do not believe He promises health to everyone. I think many people have rejected God because they came looking for a miracle that He just did not promise to provide. I’d also add I do not believe in the continuation of all the gifts. And I don’t believe they are all available to all Christians. I’m like 90% fundamental Baptist. I do believe that Calvinist and many other denominations that I disagree with on a few points are saved. However, people who follow Osteen, Copeland, and even popular churches like Bethel are most likely headed to hell. Well, thank you for the explanation. I’m no Bible scholar but I do enjoy going deeper than the surface level stuff you get in just a Sunday school conversation.

It's good to disagree in ways that are accurate.
John's wife is in the same band he is. Given that, it should be apparent that his point is more nuanced than how you summarized it. Indeed, I remember him using words like "may," like you "may" have to give up certain dreams. He also did explicitly mention how his wife is in a metal band.
