Kindle Fire HD8 Screen Replacement - It's Easy!

  • Our kids must have stepped on their kindle that Uncle Zack bought for them. We thought it was trashed. We looked around on RUclips for a way to fix it and sure enough there were a couple videos. Most of which were really long. We bought a kit from Amazon (see link below) and today we install it. Believe it or not, it is really easy. Should take about 30-45 minutes to do. Mainly because you need to heat the glass to make the adhesive loosen up. Don't make the same mistake I did and try to pry it off... use the small suction cup with a loop to remove the glass after you have warmed it up. Some videos said you could probably use a hair drier. Maybe that would work, if you give it enough time. I used a heat gun. Within no time, the adhesive was soft and the glass came out. Watch as I install this new digitizer... I call it a screen. Thanks for watching. More videos on the way!

    Took me a lot longer than you - more like two hours - but I got it done, and it works! I have a bit newer tablet and there were seven or eight screws to remove, and the camera is in a different place. Turns out it wouldn't have been necessary to remove any ribbons other than the one that connects the screen to the motherboard; just a little wiggle room there was all that was needed to get the new ribbon through. I was worried about getting those ribbons back in and properly connected, though it turned out okay. This isn't a criticism of the video at all - best video out there and I couldn't/wouldn't have tried without your help! But just for later viewers, maybe they could avoid what seemed like an unnecessary step for our particular device.

    Great video. After months of nervousness, I finally DID this. And it worked. Took about 2 hours following step by step and pausing with any nervousness. Was it EASY? Nope. Not by a long shot. But it was doable with time and patience. THE CATCH: My tablet was 10th generation. The shape of the circuit board was different inside...but I was still able to figure it out. You're looking for the SAME exact cables that the video mentions. The cables were in different locations, but they were the same in all other respects.

    • @reggaerocket
      @reggaerocket 2 года назад +1

      Some tips:
      1. Use a heat gun on low temp. If using a blowdryer, remember that you really need to get the tablet edges you're prying warm-to-touch and almost uncomfortable to hold with your hands. This makes the old touchscreen removal much smoother.
      2. When removing the old touch screen, start on the LONG side near the middle. This allows the old screen to flex instead of cracking up.
      3. If you use a blade to lift the old screen, you will likely cut the cable for the old screen. Not a problem, but expect this. Your new screen will have the replacement cable already attached.
      4. The reason you need to loosen the circuit board is that the cable connector for the new screen will not fit through the tablet's frame without shifting the board! To shift the board, remove all screws and disconnect all cables EXCEPT the battery connector (2 red and 2 black wires). This seems to be true for MULTIPLE versions of the HD8. The number of screws may be different, but the process is the same.
      If you plan to be doing these DIY repairs often, get one of the helpers with clips, arms, and a magnifying glass. It eases stress significantly. It also helps to ensure you can zoom in on cable to see if they are connected properly AND the helper arms can help to ensure you don't accidentally tug on or damage cables as well. Will post a link below.

      It is very likely that the screen you got is bad. I've seen this happen one time before. Another problem could be with the ribbon connectors. @@MillGapFarms Screen never came on, although it used to, but was not responsive to finger motion. So I changed out the digitizer. • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  2 года назад

      Z, That is a possibility. Another possibility is static electricity. Even the slightest bit could fry a chip. If it were my project, I would start all over. Take your time and pull it all a part then put it all back together. I watched the video again and did not see where I disconnected the battery. I remember being very nervous during this repair. One of my mantras in this sort of thing is to remove the least amount of stuff possible. Less opportunity for breaking something. If after you re install it, and it doesn't work after that, don't throw it away. Search out another one on FB market place and keep the digitizer for the next one. I would guess you could find one very inexpensively there or maybe on craigs list. I'm sorry this happened. Thanks for watching my video! K

    Dang it! I tried this just a few days ago and when I tested the new digitizer, there were so many lines on the screen that it was unusable! Wonder if I scratched one of the little ribbons or got finger prints on the connectors or something?!! I got the exact same screen and kit as you did. Such a bummer it didn't work for me! Thanks for the video. Looks like such a simple task to perform but I messed it up somehow!

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  2 года назад +1

      Ryan, A big part of doing this for me was taking my time and wearing reading glasses to do it. I may have worn a headlamp too. What is possible is you could have gotten a wire bent in the ribbon connector. As I'm thinking about it, there is a chance you did not get the ribbon connector installed all the way. That could keep the digitizer from working properly. Before I tossed it, I would go back in and look at the connectors. I tested it before I put it all together. Replacement operation was a failure for me. Watched the video closely, and about six times - since there are no instructions with the replacement screen. Removing the glass was a challenge, I had to use a hair dryer, the glass cracked and shattered quite a bit. I did not understand why you needed to loosen and disconnect the boards, then realized the digitizer has a connector thing on it. It seems that I knicked the LCD panel along the edge during glass removal, which may be why the screen would not turn back on. I think I reconnected everything correctly.... Hopefully newbies like me out there will have better luck. My kindle fire 8 is at the bottom of my trash can.

      James Troske, the thing is that many people don't live in places where replacing a kids tablet is that simple. In my case, it would cost close to $180 by the time shipping is factored in. And that's just for the bare unit. In this case, repairing a digitizer actually does make sense.
