Let me give you the best compliment you may ever get on one of your videos. I've been a subscriber for a long time. At least half the time I read the video title and think "Yeah right. I'll watch this for about 3 seconds". Then at the end of the video I think, I watched that for all of the seconds. There were no more seconds. How can he be so interesting? I watched an elephant fight a car and skipped it 10 seconds in but you seem to have a super power. You are more powerful than an elephant fighting a car. You have a super power and you are............ UNSKIPABLE!! That is your super hero name and I demand you get a costume complete with cowl and cape made up immediately.
Lazer LED lights, good! Saw them first on L2SFBC RUclips channel, from Robert Pepper, and it seems to be very well built, good materials and design, and also the research and engeniering behind it seems legit. Good bet! Curious how they perform in real world use. And i know they have been tested in rallye cars, so lets see what you have to say about them later on, cant wait!
Have you changed sides for the shower? Most set ups have the shower on the drivers side and the shelter and majority of shade on the passenger side.
I cant believe A - how quietly you are talking inside the Troopy and we can hear you. B - how nice it sounds from inside.

They did no more work on it, and have now upgraded to a ute. I'll be covering that story in the new year.
Cant wait to see the next iteration of the water hub. I have yet to install a water system in my camper though I have most of the parts.
Andrew, I have no idea why your "lightweight" is so heavy. My finished build is 2850kg with full tanks of fuel, full water tanks and an extra kaymar bar. You're almost there with an empty car? Step up the game old man, you're being out-done.

So you built a complete Troopy @ 2800 including all your great & somewhere to sleep? How usable is it? I imagine you could put a cheap Kmart tent & some other lightweight gear in a Troopy & finish at 2600kg but it would be a bugger to travel with 🤷🏼♂️

250kg for all of that is veru impressive. Although im not one of those people who really care about how off/on track you are with this project lightweight. Im here following just to maintain my sanity in the middle of the pandemicXD
Some large tanker trucks don't have baffles to carry liquid, they actually have something like a bunch of whiffle balls all jammed in the tank to reduce the sloshing of liquid.

I had a folding shower on my 72 ford van that I took from a Canadian junked army truck from WW2 , so they did not invent it , but they sure charge like they did .
The Lazer brand lights are designed and made for rally cars and motor sport. Which is big in the UK and Europe.
@4xoverland Andrew, I fully understand the entire induction cooking test. That aside, what is your experience with diesel fueled cooktops? No need to carry a bottle of propane, no massive inverter and battery requirements and no need for added systems and weight. Your thoughts?

I love the look of the front so much, but the back always shows the true age of the troopy. Wouldn't it b nice if you black out all the chrome on the outside? It would probable make it look more modern.

Water capacity vs induction cooking, i know what Id choose & it’s not convenient cooking. Water is life in the outback & there’s been few times I’ve hadn’t been able to light a fire for cooking
Love the new awning! Is there a particular reason you put your awning on the drivers side? Pulling off to the side of the road you wouldn't be able to get it out near the road. Perhaps the way the pop up shower goes on the passenger side is for a reason too? Just curious for my next setup

x2 water tanks also allows filling independently from different sources - ie on the road one may need to top up from "less than ideal" water sources - boil before drinking / washing / etc - uses.. while keeping one tank filled, or remaining - with "first class" drinking water - just a "not impossible" scenario (even if one which Andrew will never encounter, most likely. (lol) )
So what was the "price" of induction cooking?? $3k - that is a lot of gas (propane / butane) - (nb. the cost for the portable "power station" - can be offset and used at home as backup power - keep all the lights on in the rare event of severe storm etc.)

Loving the content...4x4 below amateur here....I always see you worrying about front weight and back weight... with awnings etc does symmetrical weight driver vs passenger side ever matter when 4x4ing? Would you ever have to adjust for side vs side weight? Or do you just try pack symmetrically and leave it...
recent episode of Ronny dahs modified series and there was a 40 series cruiser where the people had more leaf spring on one side because it was heavier. I had never heard of anyone doing it before this
Yeah I'm just thinking if it's a daily driver possibly, it's the driver, the fridge, longer term cubby storage, water heater, battery, the cantilever of the wheel, 270 degree awning, and shower... all forces acting toward the drivers side...

Lazer lamps are everywhere here in the UK Andrew, and really are excellent, although I run Lightforce Striker LED's because I wanted something reminiscent of the Lucas Square 8's that were factory options. Hella and Stedi are two other good brands.
Australian made Ultra vision LED lights are the pick of the crop now IMO.
Why not go with an underbody watertank to keep the weight as low as possible and free up space in thr cab??
Underbody 40L tank (eg Thorburns) adds 40kg behind the rear axle when empty. Two plastic jerrys weigh 4kg.
@@philg2468 my custom (85l) poly tank (with bavel) weights around 15kg and sits between the axles. I doubt saving 10kg compare to the space saved in the cab is worth it.
@@anic0485 - Are you saying you can fit an 85L water tank between the axles on a VDJ78 Troopy???

We have a 75 series but should be identical. Theoretical volume is 90l but with material thickness and bavel, let's call it 80-85L.
The exhaust needs to be moved in order to fit a custom tank.
Plenty of companies out there that do custom poly and Ss tanks.
You got me a little confused there David, 1342 on the rear and 1360 on the back. I do think I worked it out 1360 on the front.

Nice video Andrew. ?4U. When building, do you plan for or are you concerned about side to side weight distribution? This seems to get very complex. You almost need to know all of your kit before locational design. You made me realize this from this video. I'm planning for induction stove top too but I've been looking for pots and pans that are light, strong and will work with induction stove and open fire to keep as light as possible along with non plastic components and with fold-able or removable handles. Finally I am steering clear of non stick coatings because the coating breaks down into toxic byproducts at elevated tempertures such as would occur on coals or an open fire. Finding such gear is proving near on impossible. I'd love your thoughts on that.

Don’t take this as a criticism, because the cruiser builds are great. But seeing something different next build would be cool. A different challenge?
Andrew, can you go over the 270 (bat wing) awning in a little more detail. Also here in N. America land the road shower systems are pretty popular. Any thoughts on them?
Why use that giant water heater instead of a much smaller "on-demand" tankless unit ?
I think that unit actually holds 8-10 litres of water inside it effectively adding to the water capacity carried in the vehicle (although you probably can’t get that out easily unless you push more water into it. Trauma make a small unit @ about $2k. 😬
Nice build 👍🏻. New shorter music intro is a good improvement. Going to be close with around 350kg to play with, not the 600kg - if you estimate that two passengers will be about 160kg, plus about 40kg of luggage and fresh food. Safety gear; ropes, shovels etc. will probably be another 50kg. However, you might lose a few kilos when you swap the steelies for alloys.
The factory 16x6 steels are actually lighter than ROH 16x8 alloys

@@andrewb5887 The current factory 16x6 steels weigh 12.2kg each while the ROH 16x8 alloys weigh 13.2kg each. The factory tubeless steel wheels with the 225/95R16 Bridgestone D697 tyres weigh 29kgs each, so if you change wheels and tyres, the new ones will always be heavier
@@philg2468 cheers I have factory pizza cutters and will put a 255/85r16 on them when the bridgies are run through. I don't know why noone wants the skinnies but I'm glad because blimey they are good value. Just got to decide on a tyre for them expensive BFGs/Maxxis or cheaper but probably as good fallen/Toyo/yokohama
@@andrewb5887 Yeah, but 255 need a 6.5" or 7" rim and you can only get mud tyres - In the steel the 16x6.5" 105 series (zero offset) do the trick and weigh 13.8kgs. In alloys you can use the 16x7 zero offset factory alloys (about 11kgs I think). I'm still running the 225/95R16 and use the zero offset 105 at the rear and P20 offset 78 at the front so I get 40mm axle correction without compromising reliability.

Hi Andrew, what do you think of the Jeep Gladiator both as a platform for what you do and as an overland vehicle? I mean, just reading it’s spec, “out of the box”, it’s an extremely capable and impressive car,.
Few issues:
1. You’ll very quickly run out of usable payload in those trucks.
2. Reliability. I’ve owned Jeeps in the past and they continuously get worse with every generation.
3. Durability. Paper thin steel. It’s just pathetic how easy it is to dent the panels by just bumping into them with your knees.
However:
1. Perfectly good TWO person (max) vehicle for expeditions, regarding weight management, etc.
2. TFL just did a review of a guy’s Gladiator. It sat at 8k pounds, WITHOUT a load out for travel. Jeeps can very quickly become overweight, and therefore, worn down quickly due to extreme weights on Dana 44 axles.
3. At least they hold their value, for the most part.
My recommendation: Look into a F250 Tremor or 2500 Power Wagon. Virtually the same price, same mpg, but far better built for overloading it.

I mean, lets be honest, most overland cars, or off roads or any of the above combinations, will spend most of their lives driving to the shops, or schools or the office or for dinner at night. most of these cars, and most of us, dont lives on the dirt roads, so how it handles the pavement, its functions, features, comfort, intelligence functions, "apple car play" etc etc, are rather important. if one could have a car that as most of the above, plus its a bit fun to drive, plus looking a bit unusual plus a very capable off roader, then that would be a great option. most of us dont carry 10 tones of weight and stuff for a 4 years expedition...
You should check out Dan Grec's channel "The Road Chose Me" He is currently building a Glad and touring Australia. He previously crossed Africa in a Jeep JK and prior to that did the entire length of North and South America in a TJ. He experienced next to no problems and proved that Jeeps are as reliable as any other vehicle out there.
I don't think you will get an objective answer from our host - he simply does not like Jeeps. I too am looking forward to Dan Grec's progress.

You could have saved some weight by fitting a much smaller 270 degree awning. I am using one with about 1,8m rib lengths and it provides ample shade for two people. Except of course if you want to be a teacher in Africa where there are no trees😊
Even the drifta team made a clone of the shower tent even when they moan a lot about people copying them
Light-bar - what about legality? To be used when driving where?
I avoid driving in the dark whenever possible, off road it is absolut and on roads one needs to consider others! So strong lights are good but what about the mileage (cost/use)?

Bed platform/interior roof of the Troopy looks terrible with the exposed steel beams of the bed base.
This is bordering on the ludicrous. He is worried about adding more than 1kg in terms of the light bar, but has just put 30-40kgs right up high with the 'massive awning' (which will be interesting to see one person manage in a mild breeze) and shower awning.
I still cannot fathom the interior water tank. Loosing internal space, more weight up high when compared with many existing reputable water tank manufacturers for the Troopy which are underfloor.
@AVRO filmvideo Is that the awning people were bending the corner knuckle on? It would literally fold over the roof of the car in the wind? (Genuine question).
The Long Ranger do a 50 litre water tank for the dpf Troopy. There’s not many options & 50 litres is not enough.

@AVRO filmvideo Mo I’m not suggesting that, I saw a YT where a guy had one fold over his roof, the wind caught it & it looks completely different to the Alucab version BUT I’m not sure if it’s the Same one, which is why I asked. I will look for a link and post back here for you to check out. I don’t have a horse in this race friend, I’d be happy if it wasn’t the same one, I was just asking. 🤷🏼♂️. Edit to add, the one I saw on YT might have been an earlier version but it was much lighter & the material in the awning was exceptionally good but the corner knuckle had round arms. I’d rather have 17 kg over a 40kg one anyday (up there) but not if it’s going to fail me, so I’m genuinely interested in finding this out.
@AVRO filmvideo Found it. Look @ 2:30. This guy spoke really highly of the awning but it broke, that said he said they sent him out a new part immediately. Maybe yours is different, I would be interested to know because I’m still keen to take a recommendation?

I love the troopy, but finding that new starts at 2.400kg is a big sad, no much room to play with weight. Ones fully built and loaded is going to be sooooo heavy, fuel consumption will be out of question for us europeans.
They really do need modernizing but they do also get claimed fuel figures or a little higher which is pretty good for a 3 ton brick with a turbo v8

Not interested in fitting a chassis water tank? Seems to be a few types available.
The Long ranger makes a 50 litre one that sits into the space near the tail shaft. Definitely something I would consider but I want to carry more than 80 litres. Call me hygienic 😂 There is another one that can install between the rear tank & rear bumper (40lt) but if you put a real rear bar on it, it won’t fit.
So sad... you've shut down the Autograph Overland business. I was interested in this build and would have put in an order.

I feel the target has been completely lost here. It’s still going to be very much not lightweight. Why not consult with aircraft engineers, instead of getting cabinets made out of lumber? Why use induction cooking if that means adding huge and heavy lithium batteries? Why getting the largest awning instead of the lightest?
