Lets Look at Blazing Strike! Old School Pixel Art Fighting has Returned!

- Blazing Strike is an indie Fighting Game very much set in that retro late 90s style, everything is well drawn beautiful pixel art, and the gameplay evokes that classic feel of the old days. The game after many years of development is now finally out and live right now, TODAY and I figure lets take a look at the game and show you what its all about. Interesting gameplay, a fun techno slash cyberpunk aesthetic, lots to have fun with here.

So Blazing Strike launches TODAY! And I figure what better time than today to put out a video just kinda going over the game and what its about. Blazing Strike very much comes form the old school of fighting games, in terms of pacing and some of its gameplay, and very much certainly the aesthetic. Classic old school 2d pixel art here for everything, lots of people wish it could come back so hey! here it is! So give the vid a watch and find out what the game is all about
I do genuinely think this could break through the indie title and be on the tournament list in a year or two.
WAY too expensive at $40, for an indie game, especially with all the flaws the game has (which everyone else has mentioned in their videos, but you did not, for some reason).
@@MrCageCat Alright, first of all, it’s not $40. And why would we want to criticize a new indie game? The fighting game industry doesn’t get that many releases, so why put these developers down? Add constructive criticism to help improve the game. He even mentioned the infinite jab issue or whatever, so go easy on him.
@@jfitzgerald4887 You were right. It is 39.99 USD and that's also the lowest price it has ever had on Steam.
Criticism highlights the gaps which the game needs to fill to keep up with the competition or match audience expectations whether it is indie or not. It is obvious at a glance that the game may have had feedback over the last 3 years but that it was either ignored or massaged into hype despite no public playable builds for years up to release (Patreon demos barely count). It is free to ignore the feedback as some of it may be mean, which goes without saying.
On the note of competition, we actually get fairly regular releases especially if you look at the market more broadly than what your average FGC or Smash tuber covers.
Some of the data is skewed by very bad tagging but we have had more 2D fighters year on year from Steam (apparently over 200 in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024) and that is including highlights like Rivals 2, Merfight, Dojo Masters, Arcus Chroma and Astro Duel 2 which all showed up when I filtered for games with PvP and 64% reception (51 games). Even if half of the games didn't count as fighting games on my own inspection, we have dozens of fighting games in a specific subgenre on Steam which are new and significantly cheaper.
We also have a market including free games which are on the EVO main stage and plenty of cool looking games like Frostfire which are playable elsewhere but just not on Steam now.
What makes me sad is that smaller fighting games like this and pocket bravery don't have staying power with players. Lots of fun, but people always go back to bigger franchises
Fighting games are doing much better in recent years but we still aren't as big as we were back in the 90s/as big as some modern genres today. Most modern indie fighters will survive by word of mouth and a small tight knit community but thats exactly why I make these kind of videos, cause the biggest obstacle is people simply do not know the games exist to begin with. Every fighter deserves a chance so I do my best to give them some visibility and see if it can gather some extra players.
Discord, and good netcode can extend the life of fighting games for years. Especially if you have just 1 good friend to play with.
The market has too many fighting games tbh, and it already takes a lot of time and energy to master ONE of them, so most players just go back to their familiar game which they put effort in. You gotta be a jobless student or a pro/streamer to be able to play multiple fighting games at a decent level at the same time😅
@@RobokrokIt only feels that way because fighting games as a genre is 90% just iterating on the same basic formula with granular gameplay details, and joining a community means learning those details. If brand new ideas could be explored without the FGC labelling them gimmicky mud-genre perversions, communities could form around everyone learning something new, instead of around taking your encyclopedic knowledge of fighters and applying it to another 100 hours of frame data study. New ideas level the playing field; iteration keeps the sweats on top.
(I’m being hyperbolic, people, don’t fill my notifications with replies about how my comment isn’t 100% objectively true.)
theres a whole 4 people on steam sadge
$40 is wild tho , way too expensive.
also in the next week or so expect a few more "lets look at" style videos, its a pretty dang good time for indie fighting games right now! so like the subscribe button and smash the monitor and all that
I know its not your normal thing but *please* look at Rivals of Aether II!!! It fits perfectly!!
@@Rukir well I got no access to the game for one so that kinda ends it right then and there, but im not known for covering platform fighters and honestly I don't know if my opinion on them is worth much compared to like say a smash-aligned youtuber.
Thanks for highlighting these indie fighters.
This game has a lot of infinite combos, it was definitely released with very little gameplay testing
Indeed. Its chock full of bugs unfortunately. Not sure how none if it was fixed by release 😑
But is it fun?
@@hands-ongaming7180 Exactly! This is the right question 😂
What I reacted to instead was the file size. I mean, 7 gigs for a game that looks like this and has this little content?
$53.49 CAD for this game is pretty wild. It should be much cheaper imo
FINALLY WE ARE HERE ITS BEEN LIKE 5 YEARS BUT WE ARE FINALLY HERE
I have put blazing strike in so many "year of 20XX fighting games" videos waiting for it to come out year after year. Next year it finally won't be on it, I wont know what to do with myself.
Sometimes dedication and hard work aren't enough... This game needs a loooooot of polish and testing and fixing and redoing... Also the price tag...
Seeing these backgrounds, they clearly are going for a SNK stage style, which is the right move in my opinion.
Caution with this one. It's at $40 with a whole mess of negative criticisms regarding its content. Including weird limitations on options in the training mode, Story Mode doesn't let you save progress, Arcade mode lacks bosses or any endings at all, also there are infinites and TODs that have already been found. I'm not sure about how the online actually plays but a lot of people aren't bothering to play due to the price alone. If you're going for it, be careful. Also, there are a lack of customization options on PC and you might need to Alt + F to fullscreen. This game is kinda going through the ringer but considering some of the stuff it's doing, I can't say you need to dive in now. Maybe wait on some fixes and patches first and maybe a discount.
Yeah this needs to be addressed by the dev. I get that all this praise and excitement is a victory lap but goddamn even the sound barely works. Also lower the price!!
The training mode seems insane to me. It looks amazing but it's hard to support this one even though I'd like to.
Ah too bad this
Really disappointed rooflemonger didn’t mention any of that. He made it seem like a decent game. But the criticisms of this game by others definitely makes it seem like it needed a lil more time to cook and definitely isn’t worth the price.
@@kingmanga8575 I'm kinda shocked and disappointed by this too. Unfortunately, this is probably gonna make me take his reviews or coverage of games with a massive drop of salt. The guy knows how to breakdown a trailer with the best of them but being critical about games that may lack is something we need to avoid getting burned on bad products. Nobody wants to smack talk a dev team let alone a single dev putting in the work but spending $40 on an undercooked product is just not a good time and not good if you don't tell your audience to use caution going in.
Badass character designs, I like.
The animations are very choppy. What I mean is the dancing pixels on the thighs and clothes movement. When you animate pixel art it better be on point because everyone can see it like a sore thumb. Good thing is they can revisit and fix this.
While I've seen some games add in their finalised sprite out over the outlines (Fraymakers in Early Access) or remove frames (Skullgirls), it is very unusual and expensive to redo sprite art or animation.
If it was a bigger team or 3D animation, I might see it happening but other games normally focus on visual effects, lighting or texture swaps (KOF 14, Marvel Infinite, Tekken 8) even if they can tweak an animation completely (Luke's SFV jump)
Early gameplay gave me Street Fighter 3 vibes but the final product leans a lot closer to classic KoF
My mind couldn't help but fill in "Neo Jesus" as "NEO GEO Jesus." A fitting deity for a pixelated, four-button fighter.
I think that was intended, but I'm not sure.
@@jellojiggler1693 You may be right. He seemed like he kind of paused for emphasis. Even if he didn't intend it, I'm sure the only reason it even occurred to me was because of the way he said it.
I gotta play this game. I like the old school pixel 2D fighting game visuals. Obviously old SNK & Capcom vibes. Definitely wanna give it a try.
They need to put Terry Bogard in.
agreed
Me too...

Let's NOT look at Blazing Strike
Adore the style and character design of this game! Really damn cool. There is definitely some balancing issues but there is a ton of potential here IMO.
It is an amazing 2D sprite fighting game (the best kind) with some gorgeous animations and very fun mechanics. There are A LOT of infinites. However, the developers know about them, and they are easy to stop. Your parry input is just forward (with generous timing window) and if you are getting combo'd there is a "burst" mechanic called rush parry. Just hit forward and rush button at the same time (gotta get the timing right so keep spamming it while you are getting hit, dont give up)...
Also.... Don't waste your time revving to restore Pink's bullets. Just down heavy kick seems to reload most of the time, lol. Some of it is the fun kind if jank!! I love this game.
Thanks so much for reminding, i was hyped for this game but I forgot about it during the years. i'll give it a try for sure.
Omg I assumed this game fell off the face of the earth forever! Can't wait to give it a go!
The sprite work reminds me of Chaos Code.
So its just drive system..sf6 proving to be revolutionary, no mAtter how much ppl complain sf6 is the new goat
To be fair, this game was known to be in development for 6 years with the exact same systems mentioned in the 2019 Kickstarter.
SF6 did release first, but I wouldn't be that surprised if there was a 90s game which played with similar systems let alone a modern indie game.
A game full of El fuertes just sold me lmfao
Seen plenty of reviews mentioned all the flaws of this game. You did not, which, is VERY surprising for me, as people have the right to know that a $40 game they are buying isn't really worth the price IMO. Almost feels like it was a biased review to be honest.....
He was probably paid by Aksys let's be real
Awesome info as always. Thank you!
Legally Distinct King from Tekken can't hurt you.
You mean tiger mask
Fighting game with amazing pixel art, cyberpunk aesthetic, and a plot straight out of JoJo's. Sign me up!
yikes, the steam reviews for this arent looking good, ig il wait for a sale
This game is definitely going for KOF XIII and 3rd Strike vibes, and I love it! And starting with 14 characters as an Indie game that's great!
"moves don't hit in the corner and main character has a jab infinite but hey, that's life" hmmmmmm no? That's unfinished?
The amount of cope around this game needs to be studied.
I'm the target audience who is considering getting multiple "dead" indie games to join a tournament in just a few weeks but they need to meet a threshold which I think this is short of - in part due to price but also due to polish.
@@thelastgogeta People are so hung up on it being made by one guy and it having pixel graphics and the whole "It looks like 3rd Strike" hoopla that the game's basically formed a cult of cope around it.
Can't speak on the corner whiff, BUT, all infinites are easily countered with rush parry.
@@DerrickBarrows That only applies to grounded infinites/loops, we've got juggles too which cannot be bursted to my knowledge.
Mind that Rush Parry takes half of your Rush Meter to do and some infinites are way too easy to the point that your opponent possibly didn't spend any to start the Infinite.
Of course, I'm speaking in hypotheticals since the game is in a state where I don't expect a healthy scene to expand to confirm or deny my thoughts and Frosty Faustings is far away enough that a lot may change even if it isn't "fixed".
Why are you misquoting him? Finish the sentence and don’t take it out of context. He said “… that’s life, and it will be patched.”
Hate to see indie games like this fail. With all the time and money spent to develop it. Pixel art is very time consuming. Hopefully they can damage control or else RIP devs.
Stages looks pretty unfinished and that HUD... ugh.
"this is the craziest fighting game story I've ever seen" little bro did not play guilty gear or blazblue, did he?
Oh wait, you did... I don't think GOD being an character in the story is the craziest shit
Long awaited but it's really worth it!!
The plot sounds like if Guilty Gear was made by Hideo Kojima
The cost of this game I think is going to be a major hurdle, $40 is very expensive for an indie fighting game.
I agree it should be 20 or 30 tops
Did preorder for Switch from 2 years ago! Finally got it yesterday and its cool... i love the characters so i did another order but this time the Limited Edition for ps5 bc i wanted support the mexican artist who made the art and the girl who made all the music. Are amazing
Looks amazing, reminds me of Gariax, dope vid.
I appreciate you giving it a spotlight but I feel like you gave the devs too much benefit of the doubt on this one. For starters that training mode is inexcusably bare, and there couldn't have been much playtesting with the infinites I'm seeing. I would look past all that if the game was like 20 bones but 40 is too high for this lack of polish.
Looking forward to this game.
Rush button reminds me right away of MK3.
Game looks super cool, but looking at steamdb, there's less than 100 people playing it. So while the netcode might be great, it means nothing if there's no one to play.
I feel like that title was taken from some thing the announcer from streetfighter Alpha 3 said
So weird to see Roffle is casually talking about this game when every other channels are heavily criticizing the game for how thr Rush system works, the lackluster story, lackluster arcade mode, no tutorial, the cluckky training menu, and that the game just doesn't look or animate that well.
he was probably paid for this review
The more people play the game, the more charming and fun it becomes is what I have seen.
@@asobibuddy8481Honestly, I doubt that anyone was paid outside of a free review code and that makes it even worse that Roofle is sugarcoating the problems even if the game does have some merits.
Although Steam reviewers aren't always the most accurate or tolerant source of information, there are too many negative reviews with a whole host of issues represented to ignore. I think it's gonna be hard for him to turn that review score around now.
Just bought it. I'm starting it up now. Straight to training mode.
This review is prerty one sided, here on the ground at launch, it doesnt feel like its been playtested at all. Definitely not worth 40 dollars.
Currently:
Online play on pc is completely broken, 3/10 matches will crash or freeze in between rounds
Nearly all characters have juggle infinites that ignore the rush parry system(i.e. you cannot burst them), that most consist of just a jab
For some characters, the move list is just wrong.
And much more
I understand the developer may fix these issues. However, i strongly encourage anyone who is considering the game to wait until that happens, because in its current state, this game is unplayable, and i do not say that lightly
its literally not a review, its a casual look at. If it was a review, I woulda said review.
@@rooflemongereven if it’s not a full review it seems like u willfully ignored a lot of the glaring problems of this game. This video seems like it’s trying to paint a picture of a cool Indy retro game rather than being honest about its shortcomings.
@@rooflemonger Oh fuck off with that bullshit. Anyone that spends 10 seconds with it to see the lag on the menu screen should have been way more critical than you were even in a "casual look." People respect you, for some reason, and have wasted money on this. Get fucked.
@@kingmanga8575he has to be getting paid. No one has been positive on this game that actually spent money
i gotta try and get my friend to try this out with me! It looks great
been playing today. It's fun looking forward to updates; hear there was some free dlc characters coming
I won't lie the character designs in this game are all over the place. Many of them don't even look like they should be in the same game. Alexander is pretty egregious, he is literally just King from Tekken but buffer.
Dude, look at Necro next to Shaun. They look like the same game? The variety is great. Something for everyone. I like a gritty aesthetic and a cyberpunk backdrop
Great artstyle, interesting characters, roofle-approved, immediately wishlisted.
i've been waiting for this game for a long time
Ah hell yeah, I've been waiting for this game forever! Definitely gonna get it when I get my next paycheck
Three characters i know have infinites but there is a combo breaker in game, just rush button and forward when hit.
How much does it cost to Rush Parry?
@@thelastgogeta 50% of the Rush meter
@@Gamersgoinblind Thanks, I haven't got enough data (do you recover when hit, how fast does it recover, does rush parry have a cooldown for recovery or in general) but it is reassuring on paper to know that it is pretty expensive.
Already looks better than the last one you showcased. I’ll check it out. Might be another one to add to my steam deck playlist.
Was hoping this would be $15, but I still would've impulse bought it at the expected $20. At $40, from an unproven fg dev, I'ma have to hold off 😬.
Looks cool, but I think they should've opted for a _less $ from more people_ price point rather than the current, _more $ from fewer people_ approach.
Reviews on Steam also don’t look promising either. This might be worth it if it goes on sale
Also fg are depended on the sheer amount of people playing online. A higher price point will hinder the long term chance success.
The best strat is maybe starts very small and make it free to play (or very very cheap,) then add content in a relatively quick pace along the way. Then, finally add microtransactions.
Ya clearly dont give a damn about small business man
Just buy the damn game full price to supply better funding for better gaming experience this isn't a big corporation man it's literally the publisher and a one man that made it....
Waiting for the game to go on discount after this game took years to release is a slap in the face....
@@gallonthegreat7036 "Just buy the damn game full price" is an argument if I've ever seen one.
@@thelastgogeta If you want the game knowing it's a small indie game that needs money paying 40 bucks compared to 60-70 that these big companies charge us isn't something you wouldn't be able to do
It's a indie game made from one guy he needs the money so he can make better games if ya just buy it 50% off it's 0 profit now nothing updates and the game dies .... So you want blazing strike to succeed or not ?
Hate to say it. As much as I've waited for this game to come out. But a 40 dollar price tag on a game almost no one is going to play is a pass from me.

Is this the game that had the controversy where it looked like it was a scam and never coming out?
it certainly had its issues over the years id say, but scam I dont think was ever in consideration. It was always a 1 man job up until very recently, and the publisher just basically finally helped the game over the finish line.
I’ve been waiting for an update on this game (please do a Choose a Main on Blazing Strike)

Why do I have to spend meter to dash and backdash in a fighting game? Why are you tying my movement to my meter? Hard pass.
Ima get it on the switch 😊 that way I can feel retro 😂
They need to reanimate literally everything in this game. It looks way too choppy and you can visibly see the sprites teleport into the key frames and it’s a shame because the sprites do look good. Also the background characters need to be much smaller because they make the main cast look tiny as hell because why is the people in the back bigger or the same size as the ones all the way up front ???
It’s a stylistic choice - very deliberate
@@kaneda08 I wouldn’t let that slide as an excuse of why some very big and slow moves only have 3 frames to them it looks really bad. And it makes no sense why the background characters are much larger than the characters you play as when the background characters are all the way in the back. This game just needed more attention to detail and time to it
@@kaneda08it’s not a stylistic choice. It’s just unfinished. Even by old school fighting game animation standards it’s choppy.
Game looks cool, but $40 is just way too much for a new game made by an indie developer. I’d pick it up if it were half the price.
I'm amazed anyone thought this game was actually going to be even halfway decent.
The mass delusion was a result of pretty sprites. This may be The Day Before of fighting games.
@@thelastgogeta I'm even more surprised that they thought they could charge $40 for this...

When the "how to choose you're main" for blazing strike ?
Alexander and Pink got my interest.
dont got time for a dedicated choose a main vid cause i got a lot of other stuff in the tank to work with here, but Alexander and Pink are actually my fav chars so far so there ya go lol

Blazing Strike is here and it's very awesome Sf3 3rd Strike vibes.
But sadly nowhere near close. Game needed a few months more development and feels rushed.
Streamed this last night had a lot of fun but was disappointed with no boss in the arcade mode
There are a few bosses in story mode, though you can't choose your character or save as you go through it for over an hour from what I hear.
Maybe a future patch will randomise the arcade ladder and add some of the bosses as a standard inclusion and/or a reward for good performance.

Always appreciate you for being down to make videos about smaller games too!!
Tying a fundamental movements like a dash into a meter is... uh, misguided at best. I mean, this will make it basically Meter Management: The Game.
It works smoothly and is a cool concept that makes it a bit different than other games. The rush meter is SUPER generous and comes back quickly. They want you to use it, a lot
