- 2021 is the year that keeps on giving, and now an extremely talented high school athlete has managed to break history.
Congratulations Hobbs Kessler! Enjoy your new record!
* Edit - At the end of the video on the results tab, the finishing time for Hobbs is actually 3:57.66, not 3:57.81 as it was accidentally written. Thanks for understanding!*

This guy is legitimately on fire. Can’t wait to see where he goes in the future.
Hopefully avoiding burnout...
@James BAXTER No, it wasn't hot, you can tell by looking at the runners. Are you confusing the word legitimately with literally?
I can’t wait to possibly run with him this year at regionals for track, but at the same time I’m terrified lol
Can someone explain why taieddine heldeilli isn't the record holder or even the second place winner when they got 3:56:79 how did they not get the record?
@@thorfinnoars1443 Hobbs Kessler was the only high school runner the others were not
@@olivermichell3953 oh ok that makes sense
@@thorfinnoars1443 They aren't high-school athletes. This kid was running with adults.
I wish I could come home and watch him. I remember seeing him face off with Carter last February.
So happy for him, he was aiming for a 4:03 and didn’t plan on breaking 4 till March or April. Amazing race after so much hard work over the past year
Did you type this up with your helmet on?
@@irabennett9229 that was actually easy to read dummy
A lot of people don’t realize that Hobbs was a legit National level climber before he really started to take off as a runner. He is just an amazing athlete all around!
I was surprised that part didn't get more attention. Dude has a training wall in his family's backyard with about 2000 problems and up to a 45 degree overhang. He has tackled climbs over 5.11 difficulty. He's legitimately worthy of almost as much consideration nationally for his climbing alone.
@@stevegeorge6880 he has done 5.14c at least climbing. Maybe even 5.14d.
His name is actually Hobbs Kessler and not the other way around.
And such a short video, I think it should just be redone or edited to make sure the name is correct throughout.
They fixed it 👍
@@zacharyjones7948 Nope, still saying his name backwards throughout the video...
@@GenghisKhanSchmitz He got it right once or twice, otherwise it was mostly Kessler Hobbs.
Just to be clear, this is the American high school indoor mile record?
Yes, the outdoor one is held by Alan Webb.
That’s what I was wondering. I never heard the narrator mention that it was the indoor record.
@@daltonpulsipher Because he never did. Kept repeating "National High School Record for the Mile" and never once called him by his correct name?!
@@lesliemcdermott2440 Bc it's for views 🙃
@@daltonpulsipher the narrator while making great videos is as we know, the king of click bait
Impressed with his technique and solid form right to the finish. Wow.
You can thank Ron Warhurst for that.
I did that too but the cameras weren’t on
Same, did it about 5 times in a row one day but my phone battery was dead so I have no proof, y'all will just have to trust me.
Wow the future of track and field is looking very interesting
really is!
and the video is 3:58 long
When he said it I didn’t realize it was just the indoor record. Allen Webb ran 3:53 outdoors. That’s insane though. Why haven’t I heard of him until now?
Covid. No track season for Michigan in 2020.
Hobbs just beat Alan Webb's high school record in the 1500m against pros at the Portland Track Festival running 3:34:36 as an 18 year old. (Webb's record was 3:38.2) Hobb's time is faster than current men's NCAA all-time record for 1500m as well.
Damn. That was fast. Just a couple hours later and a new upload.
Ikr like dang, two uploads
2 in one day he is fast
Make you realize the performance Jim Ryun did back in 1965 running sub 4 min.(3.58.3) mile on a cinder track!
His official time was 3:57.66, you had it at 3:57.81, at the end of the video - that was the previous record.
Jim Ryun the first sub4 high schooler is still the only HS miler to run a sub4 in a HS meet!
I don’t he ran sub 4 minutes for 19 consecutive years. Maybe 19 events
Nope, he is right, 19 years, he’s 38 years ild
Can you do a video on Nick Willis?
"kessler hobbs" looool
Right now I can do a mile in 2 and half minutes!
On my 24 speed mountain bike
Oh Nick knew what was about to go down! He has been training with Hobbs up here in frigid Ann Arbor and both are 'coached' by University of Michigan coaching legend legend Ron Warhurst. Very bright future ahead for this young man!
Im also from MI and absolutely love the fact that over the last decade the state has produced several fantastic high school distance runners.
At the end of the video you put his time as 3:57.81 for 3rd. I think this is a typo, with Drew Hunter's time instead of the actual 3:57.66 that Hobbs ran.
That was fast TRP
2:00 allmost lost the record breaking tempo vs the floor there
That acceleration at 50 to go was unreal! Good for Hobbs. Future of American distance running looks amazing.
Great race but what with the foot on the inside of the track (see 02:00) ? I've seen DQ for less … (even inside the track on a straight line)
I believe it has to be three steps.
Thanks, Mark! I didn't know that.
Thought it would be over for him when he stepped off the track.
Yeah, should have been disqualified at 2:00, still an amazing time, just not legal, strictly speaking.
@@lnoite Respectfully, 'could have been' versus 'should have been'. Perfectly legal unless called by the officials. He gained no obvious nor significant advantage and appears unintentional. This record will stand.
@@wardfreeman7533 Right, officials may determine that no material advantage was gained, but stepping inside the kerb on a curve (not a straight) is usually punished because it does shorten the amount you traveled, however minimal.
Noticed this to but hard to overturn now. Also, let's see his outside time next.
I read that the rulebook for this meet is a DQ to step inside over rail unless jostled. Strange that he did that....
the amazing thing is that there has been a wave of h.s. kids that have finally showed up with these capabilities from 2015 till today. Now there's this kid HARRISON who's run a 4:01 as a soph last spring (2020)
**INDOOR** high school record. Very impressive, but a long way for the high school national record held by Webb
The craziest thing about Kessler, his main sport is climbing not running !!!!
TRP uploads a video on this before I even have time to tell my friends about this
0:49 "Little did he know..." haha they train together, n way he didn't know.
I just learned about this like an hour ago, wow
At 2:00 he stepped inside the track, isn’t that a dq?
No , it was on accident, no big deal
Plus it’s not a championship race , just an invitational
Respectfully, it is not unless the officials call it. I am sure they considered: was it intentional, did it provide him with and advantage, how flagrant was violation?
Cool! I also make running videos!
Running in a field of faster runners helped push him to his new PR and HS record.
Amazing talent! One question? Hobbs stepped off the track @ 2:03 on the video. It was unforced and without interference. What are the rules?
i heard the rule as 3 consecutive unintentional steps out is a disqualification
If you step off the track (@2:00), are you not disqualified? What's the rule?
I saw that, too, and was surprised the narrator didn't address it. However, back when I was running, and much like outdoors, you have to complete a specific number of steps inside the rail to be DQ'd.
3:30 shows incorrect time for Hobbs.
I see he stepped out with what looks like 3 to go, doesn't that disqualify him? Never the less crazy performance!!
Shhhh
Jack Kessler's boy? Got that Werewolf blood?
His form is poetry ✨
Michigan represent!!!
Why isn't the video 3:57.66 long
The hippie in 4th would of been 3rd but for the hair
"Little did he know..." Kessler trains with Willis. Willis knew better than anyone what Kessler was capable of.
I wish I was fast enough to train with Nick Willis, but the only thing got in common with Hobbs is being a Michigander😔
This guy is a goofball, I love running with him but he was always faster than me when we did workouts lmao
Hobbs Kessler*
What are the rules regarding stepping off the track?
2:01 What happened there? Surely this run doesn’t count anymore then
The rules are slightly different for high school runners. It does count.
Off 30 miles a week too according to Nick Willis' post after the race. Willis had some really interesting comments on Hobbs, seems like he loves the journey more than anything which is what is important. If you focus on the times, the numbers you'll burn out quick. What a performance, look like NAU got another absolute star in the making.
Trp all backgrounds music 🎶🔥🔥🔥
I actually have met him because we run cross country against their team
Me too
3:30 Hold up. Look at 4th place’s time. It’s faster than 3rd😂
Wow. What a talented kid. For those asking Alan Webb has the outdoor record. He ran 3:53:43 outdoors at the Prefontaine Classic in 2001.
WOOW , and Hobbs is actually a full year longer than Drew Hunter was , this adds to the crazy feat. Curious how he will time in an outdoor race & against fellow HS runners. Thrilled !
Those barriers on the inside lane are very dangerous, and difficult to see when they are near the same color as the line. Apparently track officials haven't figured that out yet. It looks like it almost took out this young man.
The rail on the track at Randal Tyson is especially brutal
the classic slingshot method eh?.. seriously TRP your videos are just full of BS. 'ideal pacing for sub 4 minutes'?..i mean WTF man?!. please tell us why 60 seconds first lap is ideal pacing?..why not 58, 59, 61, 57?- the leaders went under 4 min too. thanks for the video content but really, the voice overs are just fantasy and full of arbitrary statements.
This high school boy proves why men shouldn't compete in women's sports even if they transition. The women's world record for the mile is 4:12.33, 15 seconds slower than the male high school mile record. When I was running the mile back in 1978 as a high schooler, I could beat the women's world record holder by 5 seconds.
How could Nick Willis have run anything for "19 consecutive years" (frame at 0:47) let alone a sub 4-minute mile! Isn't this about high school track? Or maybe I'm totally confused!
Still only finished third though right?.........(just kidding of course, this was phenomenal!)
I literally watched this video a couple months ago little did I know Hobbs goes to high school right by me and I just watched him set the curry 2021 800m with a 1:49:67!!!!
This announcer has one of the most patronizing, 'talk-down-to-you' voices of all time. How pathetic. He makes much of his tedious observations, a brain without meaning or purpose.
Little did he know****....Except Willis trains with and has paced Hobbs in several time trials. He knew probably better than anyone in the building.
Dann this video is also 3:57
He didn’t break the National HS Record. It’s still held by Alan Webb at 3:53.3.
The crabby system similarly gaze because hospital unequivocally compare alongside a exotic missile. nifty, better selection
He is a tremendous runner to be sure. But, this is an indoor national record. Alan Webb at the age of 18 yrs and 4 months ran 3:53 in Eugene at the Prefontaine classic - 2001. The old record was Jim Ryan at 3:55, and Ryan was 17, on a cinder track, and Ryan had no one to chase.
Every video has a click bait title. Indoor US high school record. And not in a high school race. So many asterisks....
The dude in 4th time travelled.
thats hair was an awesome windbreak for the runners behind him
Lol I really did
Doesn't Kessler step into the infield at 2:00? He recovered quickly, but do they allow records where you do that?
I though Alan Webb ran like 3:53 or 3:54 as a high schooler
Indoor vs. outdoor
Outdoors
@@scotland369 thank you
@@samanimations2002 thank yoy
Misleading title. Alan Webb still holds the outdoor mile record of 3:53 (not a time stamp) and change
Can you just show the race? This business of breaking it up and showing the race in a bunch of overlapping clips is really annoying.
The belligerent cicada perioperaively matter because mechanic pertinently fill round a melodic fiber. economic, sophisticated moon
We have this guy thats gonna break 4 for sure he's a sophomore in highschool and runs a 4:20 his name is Carter Gordy Remember that
A national HS mile record and a NCAA mile record on the same track in 2021? They may need to closely measure that track.
2 uploads in one day? We spoiled
Dude. You have a number of videos with major or minor errors. In this one, you say his name wrong the entire video. Why don’t you fix it?
I ran against him in the states race in Michigan
I did not.Lucky you.
We got the honor of racing (getting dusted) by this goat. Also Audrey DaDamio popped off yesterday too with a 4:40. Michigan right now has the fastest guy and girl in the mile!
I’ve also run with him a bunch
@@chrisvanlent939 no way! me too
@@iansteele2453 hi
Dude I admire you dedication to running history and your vids but you couldn't be bothered to get his name right or the time right? Just sayin.....
The guy who came 4th wan 3/100ths-sec faster than the guy who came third ... is this a typo?
"little did he know"... Hobbs trains with Nick Willis and Mason Ferlic in Ann Arbor
Record should be rescinded. He stepped inside the line and should have been disqualified. Great run though.
Why does FloSports keep Copyright striking your recent videos?
Confusing title as this wasn't a high school competition. How old is Nick Willis now 37.
Safe to say that 2020 kept everyone from over racing. They keep their training gains and come to 2021 ready to smash all kinds of records.
Exactly. No one could be greedy last year and are hungry for competitive opportunities.
I thought I saw him step onto the infield with 2 laps to go. Glad they did not disqualify him. Great race.
Noticed exectly the same. Honestly guys at champions Olympics or World get Dsq for this. Anyhow amazing result.
@@gregs3301 not if he was judged to do it inadvertently and gain no advantage according to most rules including usatf and world athletics
It would be good to know the athlete's name before pretending to know something about him.
Isn’t it illegal to just change lanes at the end of a race to keep competitors from passing???
That boy Michigan
2:01 did he just....step out of the track?? Wouldn't this be disqualified?
@@boupyd1571 Yeah, was wondering if because it was one step and accidental thst made a difference. Not sure how rule reads.
Nope DISQUALIFY and ban him for life cheating
@@freshurb8963 OK, you swayed me to your side. The penalties you referenced PLUS public castration.
I think there may be an issue with the times listed at 3:28. Hobbs is listed as finishing in 3rd place with a slower time than 4th place.
Go Chiefs
Ok bud
Worst I’ve seen the chiefs play in the Mahomes era
Nah, nick willis definitely knew he’s been training with him
Can you just show a race like this in full without all the commentary.
One meter longer and he would've been 2nd.
The final time for Kessler was different to what you had stated the whole video.... is it meant to be .66?
He doesn’t look like a high schooler at all!
Rip signed to NAU before doing this prob a walk on
And now after turning 18 he ran a gobsmacking 3:34.36 1500m in Portland 5/29/21 to destroy the American Junior Record that Jim Ryun set 55 years ago; and Alan Webb's previous national high school record.
He qualifies to go to Olympic Trials now! He very much impressed the winners of that race, our very own mullet man Craig Engels.
