Mach-E Heater Performance, -19F with 5 min short precondition

  • We take one last look at a likely scenario where it's -19F, the vehicle is NOT plugged in and only a short 5 minute pre-condition prior to departure is possible. This scenario may take place if your end time at work varies from day to day, or you have an errand to run and there was no time to plan ahead for it. Is a 5 minute pre-condition enough to warm up?
    Follow-up: On the trip home, the cabin cooled off, likely due to the cold air being introduced back into the HVAC system. If I had a road trip at highway speeds at this temp, once again the system could not keep up at this outside temperature.

    Interesting, I drove my 2023 in -30C (-22F) and had no problem but I was plugged into a L2 Charger at both ends, garage at one. One thing I did was concentrated on clearing the glass with the heat and used the seat heater for comfort which I usually have at 1 bar but for that settled in a 2 bars on seat heat.

    When u click on the screen to turn on the recirc can’t you manually select it to blow towards face and feet and leave on recirc and it won’t shut it off ? Try that then try that again while selecting feet face and defrost arrows on the left and put on the recirc and see if it shuts it off (do all with the fan on each speed I bet it won’t shut it off and if it does it would only be on lower fan speeds . If your not selecting where you want the air to blow and u have it on auto it’s going to shut off the recirc just like the gas cars do to keep fogging down

    Recirculated air may turn off automatically, or prevent you from switching on in all air flow modes except MAX A/C to reduce the risk of fogging. Recirculation may also turn on and off automatically in various air distribution control combinations to improve heating or cooling efficiency. From the manual.

      This vehicle also had the TSB work done at the dealer which improves heating and the anti-fogging/cycle feature you mention. I had the work done too late in the year last year to test it out in my climate however

    Ford has a special mode for preventing fogging, so the recirculating function turns on and off I believe.

    So page 119 talks about recirculate air.
    To prevent recirculate air from turning off try putting heat temp on maximum, then turn recirc off. Select vent air flow for defrost, floor and passenger. Keep air speed on auto

      Much better, still not as good as a combustion engine of course. Pre-conditioning is key and unless it's -10f or colder, it seems to be working pretty good.

    Mike, about Recirc Air shifting off: Those of us buying 2021 F150's with Sync4 noticed right away that Recirc Air would only remain on for short periods before defaulting to outside air. Does this regardless of air temp. Very frustrating if e.g. an allergic or asthmatic driver or passenger is trying to avoid heavy air pollution like smoke, dust, etc.

      This is a common thing among all cars, it’s a safety thing. If the air is on recirculate and the car is full of people. There isn’t enough fresh air getting in to replace all the carbon dioxide coming out of your mouth. Which overtime can make you feel tired. So the car automatically disables recirculate after a certain period of time. Again this is a feature in a ton of cars, not just the MME and it’s not a bug.

    The recirc air shutting off is disconcerting. You don’t need fresh air to keep the windows defogged. In most ICE vehicles the max heat and window defrost turns the A/C compressor on to remove the humidity out of the warm air.

    • @upnorthmike6085
      @upnorthmike6085  2 года назад +2

      If you don't run the AC, then you do need fresh air to keep the windows from fogging up. I certainly wouldn't want the AC turning on as that would further hurt the range. It seems that from another commenter, the F150 shuts off the recirc setting as well for some reason. It's very odd

      @upnorthmike6085  2 года назад +1

      I believe it was at 97% to be exact, but close enough. I'm still not certain how the range calculation works, if it's directly related to just outside temp, or if it factors in previous driving history, battery pecent and outside temp. I have noticed though, about average when it's really cold, range is in the 110-135 ish mpge.

    • @stevemit2858
      @stevemit2858 2 года назад +3

      Just my two cents, yes it’s a lot of range loss. EV’s can loose as much as 50% of their range but let’s not forget that ICE vehicles are not impervious to range loss in cold temperatures either, they can loose as much as 30% of their range under similar conditions. Seems many people forget about that part ... funny!

    • @upnorthmike6085
      @upnorthmike6085  2 года назад +1

      @@stevemit2858 I can't argue that. I would say that ICE vehicles have a coolant temp of around 190F ish and that is significantly warmer than an EV coolant loop. So, from a cabin heat temp standpoint, they should do much better. But yes, they still can and do suffer from range loss, just like an EV does.
