How to Make Your Own Custom Clay Sculpting Tools - Easy DIY Tutorial

- In this video I'm going to show you how to make your own custom clay sculpting tools out of some easy to find objects. Just about anything can be used to sculpt and this to how I made some custom rake and loop tools using brass tubes, steel wire, scroll saw blades, and guitar strings. For those that don't know I do a lot of hand sculpting and resin casting and having the right tool for the job is crucial. Sometimes that right tool doesn't exist and you gotta make it yourself from whatever you can find lying around the shop.

This turned out helpful for another reason. I'm planning on adding hook ends to copper tubing for a cosplay project and was thinking this Apoxy Sculpt method like this should work. ;)
Awesome! Glad the video gave you some ideas!
If you don't have brass tubes, I make mine out of old felt pens/highlighters with the filaments removed. Hot glue the loop in and you're set!
Nice!
I was thinking maybe some metal straws would work as well? This is a good idea too though!
AWESOME! Thank you so much, for sharing! Cheers, from México.
You're welcome!
I need to put those in to the arsenal!
Super helpful and you can make em in an afternoon.
I actually just brought some of those brass tubes! I didn’t know there was a little thing that could cut them
yep just head to your local hardware store they are in the plumbing section
great video just found it on tested an had to pass this along to some friends on fb .
Thank you very much!
Great simple tips video. I love it
Simple yet effective tools are always the best!
Steve, you keep showing us how to use what we have and go to the everyday things we have/can access to create such helpful tools. Thanks or these really clear instructions!

You're welcome!
Definitely need them in my life !
Thanks man!
This is great! Any possibility of doing a video (or series of videos) on foam clay sculpting to get our toes wet? I’ve never done any kind of sculpting. Thanks!
Thanks! check out the beetle video and mushroom video on my site where I go more in depth on the use of foam clay
@@SKSProps excellent! Will do!

Hi! How hot is the heat gun when you use it? I’ve been thinking about buying one for sculpting but I am afraid it will burn the clay when reaching high temperatures
Heat guns can melt monster clay pretty fast and mine doesn't have a temp adjustment. Id recommend to play around with some scrap clay and figure out the best distance and time. I don't leave the heat gun in one spot I am constantly moving it around the piece to dissipate the temp
I've run into a bit of a problem usng the guitar strings. I use grey colored clay, so that might be the issue, but I found that using the ttols I made out of the strings dirties the clay; it leaves some awful metalic looking smudges, even if I clean the tool before using it.
Have you run into this issue, and if so, have you found a way to fix it?
No I haven't ever had that problem but I only use oil based monster clay
I know its a old vidoe, but the loop tools can gouge out clay as well? The rakes is for smoothing and cleaning where the loops can smooth and gouge clay as well or is the wire to soft for that?
I use bladed loop and angled tools to gouge because monster clay at room temperature is to hard. The material needs to be heated up to soften. You could use the loops on softer clays like plasticine, super sculpy, or wed clay
@@SKSProps Oh nice thanks! I Will check out what works with my plastaleen clay brand we have here
will you ever teach us how to make that Tech-Priest mask you did?
There’s a complete build thread on my site sksprops.com
@@SKSProps thank you!

Alguien deberia replicaf este tutorial en español thank
Tried to add spanish subtitles to the video let me know if it worked
@@SKSProps gracias
At this point I’d rather buy the tools for less money then these material to diy my own
brass tubes and guitar strings are cheaper than buying tools premade 🤦♂️
