I'm glad I watched this. I haven't played Subsistence in a long time and I've never played with hunters, nor have I killed a cougar. I think I may try again soon and this video will be very helpful.
Thanks for the video. I played a test game on Easy with hunters enabled. Easy works for me, as I don't want too many Wolves and Bears - its unrealistic.
At the start, the tension is real! You need to get going from the start to find stuff and focus on your first night camp.
Died multiple times on the second day because of lack of protein and low vitamins. Cold, Wild Animals are not an issue early game. Food is the key.
What I see is that we need to practice constant and vigilant situational awareness. We also need to master time and risk management. And keep working on a strategic plan in this game.
Will start again and see if I can do better now that I understand the basics.

I am sooo addicted to this game!! Thanks for this tutorial. Days are 30 mins long and night is 7 mins long. For me priorities are fire, base platform, fishing rod and tackles then chest. Base of this game is food, food = stamina, stamina = running, running = collection of food

Great tips and walkthrough for a newbie to the game. It's an added bonus that I can imagine comedian Jennifer Saunders doing the commentary. 👍 I'm a veteran of a number of survival and crafting games, but I am finding this game brutal, even on Easy mode.

been thinking about buying this game, it looks really good. when you were talking about catching chickens by hand i couldn't help but hear the classic "Chickenchaser!" from Fable in my head.
Do buy it, it is really good fun, you won't regret it! I had never heard of Fable until just now, was it any good? Never knew there was such a thing as a Chickenchaser - learn a new thing every day 😁🐝

Fable is one the oldies i would say. a classic single player RPG, fantasy, with a lot of humor. don't pin me one this but i believe it was one of the first RPG's introducing a good/evil alignment system. if you haven't played it, it's definately worth a try. though i'm not sure if it's still compatible with windows10.

There is a rock just offshore in the Big Northwest lake (shaped like a llama) that I like to use on the first night. Amimals won't get you there even without a platform and you can easily fish that first night. That buys the player time to decide where they really want to live.

Kelp expires (goes bad) very fast I found that by the time I had collected 5 kelp ... from 2 lakes I knew well, plus killed enough wolves for a liver, the kelp had gone bad. I haven't yet successfully crafted an antidote because of this. Same with fish ... make sure you have your fire already burning before you fish because I have had fish turn into rotten meat in the time it took me to refuel the fire, craft a fire starter and turn it on.
Yeah since the fruit and veg degredation update you have to be a lot more tactical about how/when and how much you gather.
Excellent Guide...and very needed, as this was tougher than i first thought and it was after the 3rd restart i decided to check out tutorials...lol
The only thing i would add is a warning about food spoilage. I was ambushed by a wolf early one morning and was lucky enough to kill it, but by evening when i got back to camp it turned to ruined meat just seconds before throwing it on the fire. Similar thing with fish traps, (which i opted for one try instead of bow/rod as first item) and thought i could then explore and come back for food, but got caught too far away by nightfall and they were dead and ruined by the time i checked the traps.
Definitely a game you want to start on EASY if you are a first timer...until you get your feet wet...and restart will still be your best friend.
Hey there, so glad you found this helpful! Yeah I completely agree re: food spoilage and traps, very good point. I have actually mentioned the traps point in both my hunting and fishing guides I am currently working on. I always try to hunt later in the day unless I am spending a day running back and forth around the base. And I 100% agree, easy in this game is still a big challenge and I would always advise starting on easy to learn the ropes first. Thank you for your awesome feedback and for sharing these tips! 🐝
I bought this game 12month to 18month ago I found I died every five seconds when I first started. Gotten better at it over time. Still keep the hunters off because every time I turn them on I just burn through resource (ammo/health kits) also still die very easy. Come back to the game recently had thought of building tower outpost around the map so it make it easier and safer to navigate around the map.
Hi Owen thank's for the comment and for watching the video, have you tried having Hunters on Revenge Only so they don't attack your base unless provoked? Also tower outposts sounds like a great idea! 🐝

@@albion3355 yep that episode is scarred into my memory, it wasn't even that I broke my damned leg, or that I didn't have a splint... it was the excruciating length of time it took me to crawl home and not one damned rabbit in sight lol.

Very helpful day 1 tips. This can be a brutal game to get started. Which pretty much is as it should be. I kinda wish they'd start us with a bow and 3 arrows rather than the pistol. Also wish for, a relatively easy way to make very low quality sandals and hat for early on, and a pair of gloves for later leveling.

my problem is protein. I think I have died fifty times. Due to either lack of protein or been killed. I just cant seem to get enough protein. I did do the fishing and wasted protein on this but then found I was doing it wrong. But I really love the game. So will keep at it.
Hey there, yes, keep at it... what you are experiencing is something we all went through I assure you, but you get used to the game and begin to thrive. Hopefully this video helps 🐝
that`s normal without a ton of exp behind you , try doing this . make a platform in a good spot , drop a chest maybe a bcu if you are unfamiliar with the map then make dying work for you . everytime you die just run back to your crate tear your clothes into cloth and dump the loot you got from the run back to base . while doing this you are filling in the map . when you put the cloth (which helps a lot getting winter gear) save a few axes as they wear down when picking ice and fill up on the first aid tp given for free . personally i save at least 3 canteens in the fireplace . godspeed.

Okay, First time playing. Easy mode. I died 2 times in 5 minutes. So there is really NO easy mode. Wolves and bears are more than trees. So now I'll watch your video.

I've found that it'll start raining in the second or third day. If you got your campfire and have nothing above it (like a platform or so) your fire will go out
That's a great tip, and yes I agree about the rain... to conserve materials - a good tip is to place a platform - put a storage crate on top them move the platform placing it above your fire and storage crate... that way you only need to build one building item.
@@QueenbeePlayer exactly this is what I taught myself, it's the best way to keep your fire in the first few days until you are able to make more walls and ceilings 😊

I’ve played this game since the day it dropped and you had to catch the wood you chopped! But!……I’ve never ever turned on the hunters! Dun dun dunnnnnnn. Should I? Does it make the game better?
Hey there, IMO yes, the game is really great fun without the hunters on but you also miss so much of what the game has to offer. 100% I would say turn them on and kick some hunter ass! 🐝

Hey there, I am glad you liked it. To move a base item, you need to press the End button, "End" will move it, "Delete" will delete it... take care you don't press delete by mistake, you will get back some but not all of your items if you delete

Nice guide, got a few questions though.
1) Is there any predator that once they are at either 1st or 2nd growl that if you turn and run they will attack you. (Like some animals do irl )
2) When you don't have your BCU up yet and you said in your guide to "remember your surroundings" is there any structure like you would craft a tall stick with a piece of cloth to indicate your base location or path to base (such as if your exploring and you get a bit too far and it becomes night ... as im sure alot of begineers will encounter)
3) The update that if you use a pistol that damages the Rabbit/Chicken and only thing you can do is let them become rotten food, is the only use of that is fertilizer?

I got out of my first game and guess where it put me for my very first game? It put me in the bear teritory next to the snow mountains "twin mountains"(i think that what it called) got killed by two wolves hiding in a bush. They could have waited untill i at least had a platform built.
Hey there Lava, love that you have bought the game - it is so much fun, really hope you find the tutorial helpful! To answer your questions:
1. No animal will chase you on the first growl, but animals will start to walk towards you on the second growl, they will only start to run if you are close in their aggro range, if you are just close enough to trigger the second growl they will walk. If you have run further up to them they will run but with a full bar of stamina you can outrun their aggro
2. There is no base marker other than the BCU that you can craft, if you get caught away from your base at night my suggestion would be to get ontop of a high rock and set a campfire there, if the weather is bad, once foundation, one wall and a roof... crouch down to stay hidden from predators. If you are new to the game, try building near a lake or a river as those are easy to spot on the map for your base location.
3. rotten food can be used to craft insect repellant and also fed into the mass recycler.

Queenie, can you start the game disabled Hunters, and then enable them LATER in the game, without it being a problem? Will the game allow this?
Hey there Vegas yes absolutely you can. Many people play this way. Its a good way to ease yourself in. Also if you are playing with hunters enables and want a break you can just disable and re-enable later on 🐝

do aggressive animals keep their locations or do they roam from day to day, hour to hour?
Hey there, they roam to some extent, over time they will move but you will nearly always find animals spawning outside your base - hope that helps

How did you spawn with a pistol?
Hi there, You spawn with a pistol if you are playing on easy or normal. I think on hard mode you don't spawn with one and neither do you in miltiplayer.
I know im extremely late but I just got to the part where you talk about hunting chickens for feathers, around 11 minutes, and instead of waiting to make sure you didnt talk about it ill just talk about it to possibly sound stupid if you did alr talk about it, you don't need to waste an arrow on chickens, you can run at a chicken and just pick them up, you'll be hauling quite the distance but I find that jumping at them helps a lot. save arrows for rabbits or wolves, hunters if you're ballsy, and get an easy 2 feathers each time
edit: ok like I thought, literally 7 seconds later you're doing the running method, im not gonna delete this comment but I am aware of the stupidity impatience can put one in
The thing about this guide is that it tells you WHAT to do but doesn't actually offer a lot of tips on HOW. I'm trying my damnedest to play on Normal difficulty but the fact is It is extremely difficult to acquire enough resources just to craft the weapons you need to hunt before you actually starve.

i tried this game it was incredibly dissapointing like a cheap knockoff of the infected. My biggest issue with this game is that even in easy i spent 45 mins searching and only found 9 of the ten fibre on the start quest list before i starved to death. This game needs fruit berries something i mean really who needs the dozens of bullets circuit boards fueletc i found when there is no food to find and shooting small game with you pistol ruins it i have played dozens of survival games and trust me after 30,000 hours on dayz alone i know frustrating and hard and i posses the will power to push through, but this game is just going oh yeah look how hard this is but its not about any choice or skill when it lacks the basic resources with which to make choices with give this game 5 years it might be half as good as the infected but more likely it will be an awkward waste of time like deadside which untill this point was the shortest playtime before complete wipe from steam thats right i chose to lose the money i spent baceasue this game isint worth the 2 mins of my time it would take to get a refund from steam dont waste your time
I hate to say it, but you need to get back into the game, I streamed on twitch and within about an hour I had: Base built, wolf and bear killed, caught about 10-15 chickens, had a bow and 15-20 arrows crafted, and I was sustaining a fire throughout the next day, I ran into approx 30+ fibre plants, found about 15+ loot boxes. You. have. to. keep. moving. But Id say that the games spawn locations suck sometimes, if you arent near water you arent near alot. Its a good game and for someone who stuck out DayZ (as I am also a dz player) and wants to tarnish a game built by one sole developer, I think that is seemingly unfair. I approached this game like clock work today, on my 5th total hour, and I had alot of success.
Aaron than you for your reply and comments, I appreciate this game is not for everyone, not even die-hard survival gamers, but then as survival gamers, we pick and choose according to our preference, which one's do and don't work for us, and even though you may not have felt this is for you, there are a significant amount of players that have enjoyed and continue to enjoy this game.
If I may address a few of the points you have raised, from my experience. Initially fibre is incredibly difficult to spot in this game, it is not that it is actually scarce, more that spotting it is a technique best learned with some experience of the game.
Like you I died before my first night, this is not a failing on your part, or mine ( I died on many of my first nights to begin with!) with every attempt more is learned and more is understood, with time you understand how to navigate dangers, how to hear warning signals how to spot fibre and so on.
This game is not a cheap knock off of The Infected, it was published a full 4 years before The Infected, there are no plagued/infected AI's in this game, it is man on man, not man on vambie, although I agree that The Infected is a brilliant game.
Fruits and berries, edible flora and fauna are in the game, rosehips, blueberries, kelp, apples, carrots, onions, and potatoes... off the top of my head.
Shooting small game with your pistol is something you shouldn't do, the meat is destroyed. The pistol and ammo is only useful for taking down a level 1 wolf in desperation for either do-or-die day 1 food or defence.
If you have viewed my beginners guide video, this will show you how to survive day 1, spot fibre, hunt for game with a bow and arrow and set yourself up to thrive.
Never knock the resources you gather from loot, whether or not they are useful on day one you will be grateful of them if you survive for crafting purposes.
On the one hand I would agree with Jarnat3h that if you struggled with day 1 that is no reason to quit, this IS a great survival game with so much re-playability and enjoyment, but if it isn't for you, it isn't for you. However, the fact that you have watching this tutorial, yet you state you have deleted the game without plans to try again, fills me with a small amount of hope that because you are watching a tutorial you may give it a go again. If you do, play a few hrs, die a few times, suck up those deaths and take the lessons learned, once you learn the basics to this game... there is a strong chance that if you enjoy the true survival experience, you will enjoy it.
