Not needing too much yellows in pikmin 1 is actually a good thing, bombs are also very powerful (when they work) in pikmin 1 and makes them used for actually half the game due to reinforced walls
Think it's worth mentioning that electricity immunity was considered for 1, but was also cut because it literally just didn't make sense to add to any levels

I see Yellow Pikmin as the "accessibility feature" of Pikmin 1. Sometimes the increased throw height makes it easier to fight certain enemies like the Swooping Snitchbug and Beady Long Legs, and the bomb-throwing ability allows for the player to try and use bomb rocks if attacking them normally with a swarm of Pikmin is too risky for them. Plus, the walls being bombable to create optional shortcuts and speed-up the demolition of the white and black walls, they ultimately seem like they work best in the context of new players, while more skilled players might not need to rely on the bomb rocks or throw height as much.
I love that there has been more pikmin content on youtube recently but not all of it is very well informed. This video did not suffer from those problems. Keep it up!
Yellow Pikmin were my OG favorite pikmin type because I liked their silly ears. As such, when I wasn't parading around with 33 of every Pikmin in Pikmin 1, I was trying to beat the game with just yellows. The distant springs were a burial ground for hundreds. I was a terrible captain.
I never knew there was a visual distinction between the 3 and 6 bomb rock walls in Pikmin 1. Great video btw, I love seeing the mechanics of this series being picked apart
Giving them a carrying boost (increased strength or faster carrying speed) would’ve been way more balanced in pikmin 1 compared to simply thrown higher. Then we would’ve had a trifecta of combat (red), escorting (yellow) and exploration (blue). I think the devs believed the mechanic of throwing Pikmin was more essential to the gameplay than it ended up becoming and so the yellows were made to justify that. As the series continued, focus shifted away from the moment-to-moment action gameplay and more on planning your actions in advance so the yellows became less and less relevant. Note that in Hey Pikmin where strategy was non-existent and focus returned to moment-to-moment action, yellows were actually much more useful.

Purple are my favourite because... how can I not love them in Pikmin 2 and all (which is my favourite Pikmin game) but Yellow come right after that. Onto what brought me to comment: I assume it's because it costs more time to do so (I assume, I don't know if it takes longer in a dandori context) but I was a little surprised to see no mention of Oatchi Pikmin4 being able to Charge break electric walls by charging with the anti-shock upgrade as well, taking away from the things yellows can do, after you mentioned Oatchi's competing with them in terms of digging speed- (If I'm somehow misremembering oatchi being able to do that, ignore this message)
I did refrain from talking about a lot for the sake of the video's length, it's already quite long lol. Oatchi is able to destroy electric gates with the anti-electrifier, but every gate appears so early on (and usually alongside other Yellow-favored tasks) that you're better off spending the materials on better things and just using Yellows.
i wonder how well you could influence the usefulness and balance of pikmin types by adding other elemental collectables and items, like the firestarters for reds that only they can carry, yellows might have sparking batteries or wires to pull, rocks can pick up spiny objects, blues can carry giant dewdrops...
It's the thing where every type already has obstacles they're required for, and adding more isn't gonna be doing anything terribly new. Like, elemental treasures are a very fun idea I'd love to see in-game, but a charged battery treasure only Yellows can collect is just a step away from Pikmin 3's conductive wires. Firestarters help make Reds feel useful because of their prevalence in the Giant's Hearth, a major area, combined with the 3-type limit. It's all about making these situations impactful, but it's also important to not stray too far into these mechanics. If every obstacle only has one answer, you lose a lot of the fun.
Now that my hype has worn down, I’d like to talk about how I don’t mind too much on how Yellows in 4 were handled. Yellows get a lot of time to shine in the first 3 areas, between being one the first few types unlocked, dealing with the surplus of electrical hazards in Blossiming Arcadia, and the digging work in Serene Shores. It makes sense on why they aren’t as utilized in the latter half of the game. While there definitely could have been more digging to do and electricity to deal with (Looking at you Anode Beetles), I do believe they half a bit of a niche still. Hero’s Hideaway has a couple Bearded Amprats at a landing site, Giants Heath has some objects up high and down low to gather, and Yellows can do pretty well against Grubchuckers and the Baldy Long Legs in the Primordial Thicket. While these uses aren’t incredible, it shows that there is still things for Yellows to do after they’ve had their time in the spotlight. Once again I must say SPECTACULAR VIDEO, I LOVE your Pikmin content and I do hope you will keep it up. Much Love!

I completely agree with what you're saying, Yellows get a whole freakin' half of the game to be actively prominent, but I think it's interesting to point out how Winged Pikmin are the better choice for Grubchuckers and BLL. Why use Yellows when you got Winged? Those enemies only even appear in the Primordial Thicket, the most Winged-centric region in the game, so it definitely feels like those tall enemies are used more for "aw yeah, it's flyin' time" over "here's a potential spot for Yellows!" That's not a bad thing though, Winged Pikmin desperately deserve their time in the limelight lol. I just wish Yellows got one last moment where you might want to keep them around instead of swapping them out ASAP.
@@Pikmanfan2002 Your definitely right on the Grubchucker and BBL being more suited for Wings, they just slipped by when I was thinking. Yellows do sort of get there final shot during the Sirehound fight, as the electric phase is very hard without them, unless your using Glows. (Off topic but I’d just like to mention how Wings are surprising great for the Sirehound, as they can fly above the fire, electric and gloom phases and can instantly latch on to the tail with a charge. Plus, if you have spicy spray they can deal the damage required. I’m just mentioning this cause I don’t see anybody else talk or even know about this, and I hope you might cover it in the eventual Winged Dandori Database)

the true purpose of Yellow Pikmin is to complete the face, with their ears, Red's nose, and Blue's mouth, all other qualities are just tacked on
