      Walt is confident he can handle a situation in most cases, but he's had genuine moments where he fears he may not have full control of the situation like this moment. I also don't see Walt putting on that kind of an act to stall or try to generate sympathy from people like Mike and Vic.

    If you remember back at the beginning of season 3, Jesse accepts himself as the "bad guy" and Walt tells Saul he "can't be the bad guy" . 13 episodes later, Walt seems to have embraced crossing that line into evil, while Jesse in the final scene is probably wishing he never entertained the thought.

    • @ghenry4513
      @ghenry4513 5 лет назад +25

      Yes, and it really also shows how Skyler has a contrasting personality and she is another reason why Walt has always been held back and not lived up to his potential, along with the unfortunate disability of Walt Jr. She is one of those types who just wants a regular middle class life and nice little house, while you can obviously see Walt is thinking "big"....Arguably, Gretchen was really Walt's true "type", but he blew that when he was younger. He was physically attracted to Skyler, but they didn't connect very much on a deeper, intellectual level. It's not to say Skyler isn't smart; she's educated, but some people aren't uber ambitious like Walt and the Schwartzes. A good example of this is Skyler's procrastination on trying to write her novel. She is capable of doing it, but she doesn't have the ambition and "drive" to do it.

      @hunterlee3353 5 лет назад +14

      g henry I was gonna criticize you for bringing “skyler hate “ into a unrelated topic but what you said makes sense. It was partially skyler and his sons disability and probably just self doubt that built over time and therefore he became depressed. Pretty sad

    Podcast notes: Full Measures
    Guests: Co-exec producer Michelle MacLaren; Producer Melissa Bernstein
    1. Written & directed by Vince Gilligan-first ep he’s done both of those for since the pilot. He’s not a good multi-tasker so he usually focuses on being in the writers’ room where he feels he’s more important rather than on set.
    2. Mike in the chemical warehouse-if you look closely going back to episode 5 or 6, if you notice the black drums in the background, they have a golden moth image. The name on the front of the warehouse is Golden Moth Inc & it’s written in Chinese & English (Golden Moth)...Vince failed to get the shot of the sign! Mike’s pistol kept jamming, which sucked up all their time (they were shooting at 2am). so Gus, smart as he is, has a deal with a Chinese company that supplies him. we see he actually has problems that aren’t to do with Walt!
    3. From season 1 - Ken Wins - when a battery is charging or discharging, hydrogen is released & can be ignited with a spark. Vince’s brother was charging his car & smoking when he was a teenager & fortunately had turned away & it blew up!
    4. Vince had this image in his head for several years of a guy walking with a bunch of balloons going into a building and shooting people up, and realized it’d be perfect here.
    5. They had to cut a scene of Walt & Skyler from 16 years ago of when they exited the house they were looking at & got into Walt’s car, which was a Porsche. Then later Walt is doing the dishes and contemplating Gale and the topic of conversation moves to Walt Jr & cars & it’s brought up that Walt used to have a Porsche. Vince hates shooting things & not using them bc he hates wasting cast & crew’s time.
    6. A scene that was cut for time before being shot was...beginning of act 1 was going to be...you’re coming out of darkness, then you see tires & hear an engine & realize you’re under a car...and you see a bloody, twisted pair of sunglasses dangling from under the car...you realize you’re under the Aztec & it’s from one of the guys last week Walt ran over, so you’re wondering if Walt’s on the run. But then the car is weaving between fluorescent cones & you pull up to a spot that says student driver. Walt Jr gets out & asks the tester if he passed, & the tester says “i really shouldn’t have let you take the test in a car in this condition.” Walt says sorry, my dad hit a deer last night & we didn’t have time to fix it! So he passes Walt Jr.
    7. Walt & Jesse have come so far in these 3 years (thanks to Craig & Little Lewis for pointing this out - 3 years meaning 3 seasons...only 7-8 months have passed for the characters) It’s a show very much about cancer, metaphorically, in that Walt is a cancer on everyone around him & his family, including Jesse. Jesse is such a sweet kid...loyal to a fault...yet it looks like he does this really terrible thing for his partner & potentially loses a big chunk of his soul.
    8. David Costabile (poor sweet Gale) is amazing to work with. He learned that song ahead of time so he could sing along.

    Another thing about the cold open, in addition to realizing how Junior's disability has effected Walt's life decisions and ambitions, is how Skyler's personality is much different than Walter's. This is organic and can occur in life with relationships, and it's about "chemistry". Skyler is educated and intelligent, but some people don't have Walt's, Gretchen's, or Elliot's big ambition or natural brilliance. She wants a simple life and can be content with a normal, middle class life, but Walt is a visionary (like some geniuses are) and has big hopes and ideals for living.
    Skyler is smart, but she lacks ambition; she can write a novel and wants to, but she has never got around to it and doesn't have the drive that may be required to. Her contrasting personality and persuasion with Walt combined with Walt Jr's disability made Walt settle for less (in addition to Walt messing it up with Gretchen back when he was younger). Walt was very attracted to Skyler and her appeal to him is mostly physical, but Gretchen was more his type on a deeper level, an intellectual level. Skyler is complacent and wants basic security, but Gretchen's passion for chemistry along with her inheritance was the right formula to support a big business endeavor.

    I wonder; is Gale really so clueless, by the end, as to what is happening to him and why? He clearly does not recognize Jesse when he first opens his door, he only saw him very briefly once before as the complete doofus who replaced him at the lab under circumstances that NEVER made any damm sense. But by the end, when he's quietly mumbling "You don't have to do this" (echoing Walt's first panicked response to finding Mike at the laundry a few minutes earlier), I think it clicked: this is the guy who replaced him, the guy they then had "issues" with & so he subsequently replaced, and then Gus drops by & starts asking when Gale could replace Walt, and now that guy is at his door with a gun in his face. I think at the end Gale knew the score, knew why, yeah, Jesse *did* have to do this

  • @DxC-95
    @DxC-95 5 лет назад +13

    On the one hand, we get to see two sides to Mike: his caring, sweet side, where he's a good grandpa to Kaylee; and his calm, cool, collected, dangerous side. But we also see that he's capable of being shocked. And it's when he's shocked that you know things are bad. To think he started off as a replacement for Saul's original role, and he's evolved into a main character worthy of being credited in the opening cast credits :3 There's a reason he's one of the most beloved characters, and we're over halfway through the show.
    But on the other hand, this is where things get "interesting". Poor Jesse has NEVER had to kill anyone before. The first few deaths were either caused by Walt or Hank. But Jesse remained "innocent" until now, and he had to do it for the sake of Heisenburg. Aaron Paul did such a good job portraying a young man who was about to make one of the worst mistakes in his life, and knowing it. You can practically hear Jesse thinking "I'm sorry" before he pulled the trigger.

  • @theminingbat

    That last scene is so good. Aaron Paul was brilliant in that scene, because most shows would just have him walk in and kill Gale and that’s it. But instead they linger on Jesse and show him crying. That adds so much to him as a character because even though he’s a drug lord who acts like he’s the shit all the time, he really is just like an innocent kid, because even though he breaks the law, he never killed anyone before. That was the line he was never willing to cross, but he knew he had to cross it in order to live, but he didn’t want to do it. The character writing in this show is so good!

    Cold open- clearly Jr's disability had an impact on Walt's ambition. Disabilities often require parents to have to devote more effort and major life decision into caretaking for the child. Walt chose to comfort Walt Jr by driving him to and from school. At this point, Walt had a decent job at the lab and had already contributed to the Nobel prize (or this was around the time period).

    • @briangonigal3974
      @briangonigal3974 5 лет назад +2

      It's also possible that it's his work at this lab that would contribute to the Nobel Prize, and that when Walt felt he wasn't sufficiently appreciated for this contribution his pride, ego & resentment made him walk away in a huff with nothing from this job just like he did over whatever happened at Gray Matter.

      @@briangonigal3974 - Yeah, hence the "(or around this time period)" at the very end, but it would be more likely that Junior's disability is what primarily caused his decision. • @spackle9999

    I feel like you guys might've missed an important point in Season 3. Gus' plan all along was to steal Walt's formula. The only reason he would risk doing business with Walt and his druggie dipshit partner was to have it so Gale, who he trusts implicitly, could be his main cook. The reason he spared his life from the cousins was to give Gale time to learn the formula. Remember his meeting with the cartel at the chicken ranch? He didn't ask for Walt's life to be spared, he only asked for a little time. Time for Gale to learn the formula.
    But genius is lonely. As he got to know Walt he saw some of himself in him. He realized that Walt could understand him and there was a kinship there. It's why Gus extended Walt's contract indefinitely when he laid out Gus' strategy in the trailer after Hank survived the gunfight. Walt became a peer in his eyes. If he died from cancer, Gus would still have the formula. If Walt lived he'd have his genius and, perhaps, a protégé.
    Well, that's all over now because the shits hit the fan.

    You can't blame Walt for every single death. Take the airplane for example. Yes, Walt was a part of the reason why it happened, but he didn't directly start it. You can always go one step backwards in the sense of what started a chain of events. If Jesse & Jane hadn't taken those drugs, it wouldn't have happened either. You can go even further with this. If Jesse's brother wouldn't have tried to hide pot, jesse wouldn't have got kicked out, he wouldn't have bought a new house and he would never have met Jane. So in that way, the whole airplane crash was indirectly Jesse's brother's fault. The same can be said for last episode. It was just as much jesse's fault as it was Walts' because if he wouldn't have made up the plan to kill those two drug-dealers, walt never would've tried to stop him either. See where I'm going with this? Walt is part of the reason all of this bad stuff is happening, but you can't put all the blame on him. If you go back far enough on the chain of events that led to someone dying, you can put the blame on literally anyone

      angie 808 a lot of the things that happen in this show does indeed lead back to Walt. Just because walt is the "cause" of this show, it does not mean that everything is caused by him, and him only.

    • @angie-tq4ew
      @angie-tq4ew 5 лет назад

      @@danielengberg7227 I agree that if you twist the angle of the story, the deaths can be lead in a different directions, and blame can be shifted elsewhere (anything can, really - it's the way of life for people to shift blame to someone other than themselves, when they don't want to take full responsibility for their actions, or non-actions), but what I'm trying to say is that Walt *IS* the focus of the show, so N&S seeing Walt the reason for everything going down the way it is, is not unreasonable.

    • @danielengberg7227
      @danielengberg7227 5 лет назад

      angie 808 It’s true that a lot of the things that happen wouldn’t happen if Walt didn’t exist. However, that doesn’t make everything his fault, and you can’t just blindly put all the blame on walt just because he’s the focus of the show, since the reality within the show is not dependant on the show itself. I understand why people easily blame walt for everything, but that’s just not the reality of it all

    I have to ask why. Why him?
    Walter:
    Because he does what I say. Because I can trust him."

    I feel bad for mike in this episode. You can tell he doesn’t want to kill Walter. Everyone else is like senseless killing but you can tell he doesn’t think Walter deserves to die and that he agreed with his reasons for what he did

    These last two episodes are so phenomenal in my opinion. Especially that last shot.. I always remember back to when Jesse was scared about Tuco killing them and says: "It is HIM or US!!"
