    Aaron Paul won his third Emmy for this episode! Probably one of his best performances ever. And he was up against Peter Dinklage, who was nominated for Tyrion's trial episode. Insane competition, impossible to compare. But man, Breaking Bad killed almost every other show's chances when it was on air.

      And re: the cold open, I really like how IGN put it in their review: "The greatest image in that opening moment was Uncle Jack wiping the blood off of his shoe. It was tiny and wordless and the visual metaphor of him throwing it down the toilet summed up the future of the enterprise: it will be sloppy, it will be unprofessional, it will be bloody, it will be for nothing. We are very far removed from the Gus era. All of that in three connected shots."

    • @alpaka8437
      @alpaka8437 8 месяцев назад

      That wasn't quite the producers' intuition. The colors should define the two fronts. In the Breaking Bad universe, beige was worn by rich people, so to speak. You can tell from the water glasses that the whites are not quite in harmony. This was confirmed in the podcast. The Whites' glasses are far apart, while Hank's and Marie's glasses are close together. This is intended to symbolize the discord of the Whites and the solidarity of the Schraders

    Aaron Paul BREAKS my heart as Jesse. I've seen BB 3X & he still brings me to tears.
    Love how the writer(s) subvert everything they built thru S1-4; everyone understands & sympathizes w/ WW at first. Want him to get away with it. Over 5 seasons we slowly wake up to a monster; realizing w/ horror that we've cheered for the villain. Vince Gilligan (writer/creator) says he wants the audience to question their judgement. Writer(s) keep raising stakes & tightening dread every episode but it never feels unbelievable.

      @tanujmaheshwari5964 4 года назад +5

      @Honk Honk Now this is complete bullshit. I don't usually reply to such old comments, but Jesus, this actually set me back...
      Cooking Meth doesn't make you a bad person, wow!! Yes, Gail was a bad guy, and so was Jesse. Why? Because they were committing a crime while being fully aware of it. They are criminals. They are ruining many addicts lives. Jesse tried selling meth to the support group, and he isn't a bad guy? I don't think you can get that point, because for you, only and only Walt is a monster in this whole show, and everyone else is an angel down on earth. Jesus Christ! So I think you should say hello to some meth manufacturers, and spend some good time with them, because they aren't bad guys, but sadly everyone thinks they are monsters, right?
      And about poisoning Brock, when a guy like Gus has you tazed, and takes you to a desert with a black bag over your head while threatening your family, you expect a person like Walt not to act?? It was necessary for his and his family's safety. He didn't want to poison a child, he had to. Was that morally sound decision? No. Would people actually do that if they are in Walt's shoes? I bet more than 90% of the people who say that "Walt is the worst, monster and blah blah" would do that without even a second thought.

    • @tanujmaheshwari5964
      @tanujmaheshwari5964 4 года назад +5

      @Honk Honk I agree with most of the things, still I don't agree with Jesse and Gale not being bad guys. They actively participated in expansion of a drug empire. Gale was a genius, he could have had any other job with ease. But no, his passion for cooking meth and making easy money made him stay in the business. BCS actually sheds a light on his character a little bit more, but let's not talk about that. Jesse could have turned his life around after having enough money to do so, but he still accepted Walt's offer to replace Gale. They might have a good heart, but that doesn't mean they are not bad people. They are, however, better than Walt, Gus, Cartel members, etc obviously, but definitely not from the eyes of a normal person, or they eyes of law. That makes them bad people. Even Mike and Hank are bad upto certain aspect. Mike followed Gus and killed many people, many more than Walt. Hank was a very racist man, who treats every drug addict like a scumbag, and has little to no regard for other people's life (Jesse) as long as he gets what he wants (catching Walt).

    Podcast Notes: Confessions
    this podcast was in 2 parts & i am splitting into 2 comments
    Part 1 Guests: writer Tom Schnauz, exec producer Michelle MacLaren, Anna Gunn (Skyler), Betsy Brandt (Marie) co-exec producer Melissa Bernstein
    1. Was it planned for all the stuff Walt there back at Hank would be used that way? No, but they did know when Walt paid for Hank’s medical treatment that it would come back to haunt Hank, that he was taking drug $. they didn’t know how. If you know too early what you want to happen, you’re robbing yourself of the process of writing & exploring story. The video confession was Vince’s idea; it took a while for him to convince the other writers.
    2. When they wrote the first 8 of season 5, they didn’t know how it would end. They didn’t know how the cold open with Walt with hair would end up paying off. It was walking a tightrope to set themselves up like that as they wouldn’t figure it all out until the next year when they wrote the 2nd half.
    3. The dvd was the nuclear option - they hoped not to have to use it. Skyler wasn’t really for it. They think she agreed to help make it _if_ he would be willing to take one more approach at reasoning with them.
    4. Bryan playing Walt acting was amazing to watch - they did 4 takes of the video, all one shot each, and used the fourth. The full confession is on RUclips (Nikki & Steven, don’t watch until you’re done with the series of course!)
    5. The thing Skyler does with the water-happened organically in Anna’s performance, not written.
    6. That scene was the hardest day for Betsy - she broke up talking about it. After they finished shooting, she broke down crying and asked Bryan for a hug. She was thinking of how Marie went from being on his side in the intervention scene to telling him to kill himself. It physically hurt her. Then, watching the video, she feels _so_ guilty for taking the money
    7. Anna feels that Skyler at this point is so lost & has fallen so far she’s already damned, she’s already lost herself, and she knows it.
    8. Everyone basically broke down crying at this point, because of the emotion of that & because the actors are done shooting this show they love. This is an awesome podcast episode

      Part 2 Guest: Aaron Paul (just him & Kelley Dixon, no Vince)
      1. Kelley felt she needed a portion with Aaron because he was so important this episode, so she recorded with him a couple months after recording the earlier part
      2. Bryan & Aaron read episode scripts while looking over each other’s shoulders and saying OMG CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS???
      3. This is the episode where it was 5°F while they filmed in the desert
      4. You’ll see Aaron & Bryan & Bob have their hands shoved in their pockets bc they have like 5 hand warmers in each pocket
      5. Aaron feels the hug was just another way for Walt to toy with him. His first reaction was to be even more terrified of him. They played it many different ways
      6. Aaron sees how Bob Odenkirk has grown as a dramatic actor over his role...he went up to Aaron after their fight scene & said (out of breath) “I gotta tell you, this is the highlight of my career”
      7. Aaron was sooo happy Jesse figured out about Brock. He’s been waiting and hoping for that

    This is the third time I watch the series and it reassures me that every season is even greater than the previous one. The twist and turns of the fifth season specially the last 8 episodes just leave me nuts every time I rewatch them. And I agree...every episode rises the climax a bit more. All the time I was trying to fix that cold opening in the story and I always discovered me wrong with my predictions.

    There are three confessions that I can count in this episode.
    Todd's confession about that train heist (omitting the part where he murdered the child at the end), Walt's fake confession framing Hank, and finally Saul's confession that he is partially responsible for poisoning Brock. What's interesting as well is what ISN'T confessed in this episode. Walt still will not take responsibility for the death of Mike, and he still will not admit to manipulating Jesse.
    And that hug at the end... Fans can debate whether or not the hug was genuine or not, but I don't think it matters. However sincere Walt may be feeling, however he may try with all his might to fix things, it's too fucking late. I think that also speaks to his ego, that he thinks he can just walk away from everything and face no consequences for the hell he has wrought.

    Walt is not a villain. He's an antihero. You don't have to agree morally with anything Walt does. HOWEVER you as the audience need to understand WHY Walt does what he does. Understanding his reasoning for his actions is what generates sympathy for the character and why you care and remain invested in his story.
    He's not a "bad guy" per se. There is no good or bad, the world isn't black and white and doesn't conform to such simplistic labels. The whole world since the dawn of man has been nothing but shades of gray. The whole point of storytelling is to put you the audience member into the character's shoes and into their point of view. And for us to realize that perhaps if we were placed in the same extreme situations, we more than likely would act the same way as the characters do.

      It just happened in this episode, Walt was trying to manipulate Jesse into leaving town and framing it as " just trying to help you Jesse" and luckily Jesse has become smart enough to see through it now and call him out on it. It may have started out being about his family but now its always about Walt and Walt first. Stop pretending he's this crusader fighting for his family. It's Walt first.

      @@Paul94096 No one is pretending EVERYTHING Walt did, was for his family, at a certain point it turned to being only about him building an empire. The difference here is, he still tried to protect his family from being killed when shit went down. He did actually save Jesse and Hank a couple times, hell, Hank wasn't even technically family to him anymore and he still did what he could to save him. If he was as evil as people say he was, he would have had no problem with Jesse or Hank being dealt with a while ago. Walt is HORRIBLE but those really close to him, I feel, he really does care for. It was also a gradual build up for him to becoming this type of evil, where he thinks not even for a second before killing people now. That's what makes the show so good, both are true. Kinda like split personality except he can just choose when he switches it on.

    Back in college I took a film course that looked at the Film Noir genre and somewhere in season three it suddenly hit me that Breaking Bad fits into that tradition. One common theme in Film Noir movies is that they look at human nature and show the dark side that exists in everyone. So, a typical film noir might be something like "Double Indemnity" (1944) where an ordinary insurance salesman falls for a woman and ends up helping her plot to kill her husband. One of the common themes is the question of whether a person turns to evil or has been evil all along. So, for Walt - he's clearly a "bad" guy at this point, but the question is has he always been a bad guy, even when he was just a chemistry teacher?

Of course walt apologized because hes a good guy and didnt want to kill him but like I said he had to do it. Just like Mike wanted to kill him after killing guss, the same reason Mike got so pissed off and punched Walter in the face that day at the bar for even suggesting it.
      But you still bring it up like you're using it to make a point. Why bring it up at all? Just cause he didnt have the same reaction as jesse doesn't mean walt wanted it to happen or didn't feel bad about it afterwards.

      @Drake Lang I'm just saying Walt is just a focused individual ,who initially started cooking meth to provide for his family,but his real reason was his regret of walking out of a company that is later worth billions,and he never wants to make the same mistake twice.But he doesn't go out of his way to kill,he avoids it as much as possible.He obviously knew what doses of lily of the valley would be just enough to hospitalize , yet not kill Brock.

    I will keep supporting Walt. This is a protective measure. Like how do people really hate on Walt? I feel like Jane and Gale are the only areas that Walt handled unnecessarily. Everything else has been protective measures of Skyler and his family. He’s not trying to incriminate Hank, but he’s leaving Hank with the decision to incriminate himself. Rather merciful if you ask me when considering the guy you believe to be so evil and selfish.

    I don't think most people are suggesting that Walt is a good guy lol. They just don't hate him every step of the way.

      Actually, this isn't necessarily true. There are still far too many Walt Apologists who outright excuse his actions as being "for the family," and outright despise Skylar for "getting in his way." It's absolutely nuts.

      @@roseofthegarden_ I'm sure that's true but I think this comment section is mostly in agreement that Walt is not the good guy in this story but many love him regardless.

      right, wish people would really recognize that walt isn't some heartless monster. twisted individual but he isn't heartless, things aren't so black and white. if walt was really like how so many see him, this show wouldn't exist, the conflict would be easily dealt with because he'd have no love for anyone, what about family? what about hank and Jessie? that'd be his mindset.

    It's so clearly the best TV show ever made in terms of quality. Game of Thrones has become a little gimmicky even though it's great. Breaking bad didnt drag out, it knew when to finish for the perfect story conclusion rather than just continuing for money like the walking dead and kinda game of thrones. The sopranos, in terms of filmmaking, is 2nd i think. But breaking bad rules supreme. Walt is one of the best characters ever put to screen. Cant wait for you guys to react to the episode 3 from last. Best hour in TV history according to critics. Ill say no more.

    I had forgotten that Jesse's realisation happened in this episode, wow. From the moment he begins to realise what Saul and Huell did with the ricin, through to the final moments as he pours the gasoline in his rage, my heart is in my throat - every time I see it, even in this reaction. Just wow.
