To Iowa fans are the Hawkeyes known historically for good defenses ?? Whenever I see them play I see a tough, fundamentally sound team. It reminds me a little of my Tennesssee Volunteers.

We often do have good defenses, and they usually over perform out offense. A factor of that is we often sacrifice some offense by play very conservative. So part of the reason our defense is so good is because we sacrifice some offense for it. But we do have really good defensive coaches.

Iowa's defense has been pretty exceptional for the past 20 years or so, beginning with Norm Parker, and now with Phil. I remember some years ago marveling (and pointing out to my g/f, who was watching with me:) "See, again.. they're always right where they need to be". They normally have a squad of 2 or 3 star recruits who perform like the 4/5 star guys; because their system is so well-taught, and so disciplined that they rarely give up key first downs, big plays or big scores. It does help that they have a ball-control oriented offense, so their opponents tend to get a bit desperate for a big play in their limited time allotted by the Iowa D; which is also why the Hawks get so many TO's.

Iowa's Defense isn't good enough to stop 3 loses! You're picking a 3 loss team to beat an undrafted team. I guarantee that if it was the other way around an undefeated Iowa team going to Minnesota with a 3 loss team, No One, and I mean No One would pick them to win. Minnesota is absoluty destroying the Big Ten persona of being their door mat and people Do Not Like! Keep it up Gophers shut these critics down! Go Gophers!!!!!!!!
