That is a nice professional adapter! !
If you want a fast, inexpensive, customizable hardware store version:
    Three D cell Maglite
Replace the incandescent bulb with a 3V-18V LED.
(You can continue to use the incandescent lamp until it burns out.)
    Use a 7.25" long 1" Sch. 40 PVC pipe as a reducer.
    Make a "dummy" adapter with a .25" x 4.5" carriage bolt, two
.25" x 1" fender washers, two lockwashers and four .25-20 nuts.
Sandwich the washers at each end between the nuts.
It will fit one 26650 Li-Ion cell directly or one 18650 Li-Ion (or Li-Mn)
cell with a 1" piece of .75" I.D. THICK wall vinyl tube over the cell in the
middle or a .75" piece at each end. If you use a 2" bolt, you can use two cells.
Insert the pipe, the cell(s), the bolt adapter head-first then screw on the cap.
    Works great!
Now you can use D cell alkaline, NiCd, NiMH or 26650 and 18650 Li-Ion cells!
The 3V-18V LED will operate down to one dead Li-Ion cell at 3.0V, 3.2V safe
or three dead D cells at 1.0V, 1.1V safe each.
You can also use two LiFePo4 cells which have a range of 2.50V-3.65V each.
Change/adjust your bolt length and PVC pipe length for other combinations.
For C cells, the PVC pipe is not needed, just the vinyl tube spacers.
You can even use those 3 AAA adapters in place of an 18650 in a pinch.
I have not tried it, but I think 21700 cells could also be used by moving the washer
and nuts a bit farther in (shorter) at the cap end and use a piece of .875" I.D. THIN
wall vinyl tube over the cell(s).

Great discovery! I found by testing that my PR 3V-18V LED turns off and does not draw current below 3V, so it is in effect providing battery protection for 1 cell. If a PR 6V-24V LED was used, then it should shut off at 6V for 2 cell protection. Be sure to test your LED so as not to over discharge the cells.

Long-winded comment which serves only to confuse. Please make a video and show people what you are talking about and how not to short out the batteries when using your nuts and bolts and washers.

You should make a video showing people what you are talking about and how not to short out the batteries when using your nuts and bolts and washers.

@@RonaldWalters2010 Yeah, I should. Kudos to people like you that design and make products AND take the time to make a video! I am always working on several projects and don't take the time to make a video. :(

OP wouldn't regular lithium ion 18650's possibly blow the lights emitter/bulb at 4.2 volts?

Incandescent lamp burns brighter for a shorter lifespan, then replace with an LED for more light with less energy use. Also note that 3 alkaline cells at 4.5V max will have 3 to 5 times the runtime as 1 lithium 18650 at 4.2V max. The alkaline C and D cells have much more capacity. In the 3 cell lights, if you replace the incandescent lamp with an appropriate LED and use 2 lithium 18650 cells at 8.4V max, you will gain runtime.

You can use pair of 21700 cells instead of 18650
    21700 cell has 5000mAh capacity.

I don't see why not although they are somewhat larger. I did not have 21700's when I designed these adapters... so you would need to design your own adapters for the 21700's. Also the actual dimensions can vary a bit depending on unprotected vs protected (recommended) and by manufacturer.
Note: The 18650's have performed well in the Mag-Lite flashlights. Unless you have a need to be burning the flashlight all night long I would stick with the 18650's. This also produces a flashlight that can just sit there for months on end and will work when you pick it up (and the batteries don't leak).

I have a Maglite 3D and would like to convert it to 2 18650 batteries. I already converted to LED. Is there an option to buy that adapter anywhere and get it shipped?

Sorry. I only offer the free files.
You need to find a friend who has a 3D printer ... or sometimes Libraries have 3D printers available.
Another option would be to search for a 3D printing service.

Love the adapters! Protected batteries are new to me. What does that mean exactly? I am thinking an EMP - proof shielding? Or am I way off?

You can buy protected or unprotected 18650’s. Protected batteries are more expensive. You can add a protection circuit to a battery cheaper if you have a way to weld connections to the terminals. Watch this video and it will explain everything.

The protection disconnects the cell from the device when the voltage is too low to prevent over-discharging. If the flashlight was designed for lithium cells, there would be protection in the light itself. They SHOULD disconnect at 3.0V, but many are set at 2.50V, which is way too low unless you have LiFe cells. Most are also supposed to protect the cell from being over-charged. The protected cells I tested did NOT work! I do NOT trust them!

Does anyone sell these? I have 2 4 D cells I'd like to convert, I just don't have the 3d printers or the machining for this.
