    Dr. McDougall, you have always been an inspiration to me. I have learned more about carbs from you than all others combined. When I stay on a high carb (non processed) and low fat diet plan, I lose weight and have plenty of energy. I love nuts of all kinds and so I have to consciously restrict myself to a limited amount of nuts. Especially cashews. I get started eating them and it takes an act of Congress to get me to stop. So videos like this are a good reminder for me to limit my intake of nuts. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of nutrition and common sense eating.

    all of you disagreeing with him don't understand his point. you CAN eat avocados and nuts, just don't make them the MAIN part of your meals! if you eat 3000 calories in a day, don't have 1000+ calories from these fats. that means eating more than 3 avocados! your calories should come mainly from starch.

      sheepnoisebah This is my issue with Dr Dougall about Nuts: nuts, olives and avocados are Whole Foods with fiber. And people who eat nuts in scientific studies (NutritionFacts have shown them) actually showed that they lost weight and cholesterol went down. Also per weight, White rice and white potatoes have less fiber (if not none) in them compared to nuts. White rice and potatoes will raise the blood sugar of diabetics (especially those with type 1). I’m not saying people should just eat nuts all day long. But we do need a diverse array of foods to stay healthy and that would include nuts.

      Nuts are not fattening. All you have to do is eat them in moderation so as not to exceed your body's caloric limit. But you can include them without any problem in your diet. The recommended daily amount is 5-8 nuts. You can take them with breakfast, at lunch, as a snack or, why not, at dinner. But, yes, do not go too far, since everything is good in its proper measure, and if your goal is to lose weight, you should not consume more than 8 nuts a day.

      He doesn't know what he's talking about. He condemns any diet that opposes his own without even fully knowing about it first. The real questions are: Is this diet sustainable and what are the long term consequences of it (nutrient deficiencies, disease risk later in life)? Higher fat diets seem to be reporting similar benefits and much more than Mcdougalls diet, including faster weight loss.

    While I like the McDougall diet and I don't think we should eat a lot of high fat foods, I'm not sure I can totally agree with what he said in this video. I mean, he kept mentioning not eating a lot of seeds. Corn is the seed of the plant. Actually, grains in general are the seeds of the plants they come from. Beans are also seeds. Heck, even potatoes sprout from the tuber.

    • @harrispj4205
      @harrispj4205 7 лет назад +1

      Jared Chan Most nuts are difficult to digest if eaten raw (eating them roasted and/or with salt is of course the absolute worst) and they cause a lot of gas. I'm not an expert but if you do a quick search, you'll see that soaking helps get rid of unwanted acids and also makes the nutrients easier to absorb. During winter I would recommend soaking for about 10 to 12 hours. In summer 6 to 8 . That's for all nuts and seeds excluding walnuts and cashews. Cashews need to be soaked for about a couple of hours.

      noo! in fact there is a study cited by Dr. greger in which they gave people a 300 calorie surplus worth of nuts and the y did not gain any weight, you should go for either walnuts or flaxseeds for your essential fatty acids and even thoughgreen leafy vegetables are high in Omega 3's they are so light in calories you would be eating buttloads of greens to get sufficient ALA, don't fear nuts, they have lots of nutrients and toasted walnuts have a higher mineral absorbtion, plus they enhance endothelial function, it's an honor helping, plus i guess you want to avoid any chances of brain diseases!

    The problem with a starch based diet is that most of the starchy foods recommended are soft when cooked, and not enough emphasis is placed on nuts, seeds, and raw vegetables. If most of what you eat growing up is composed of rice, beans, potatoes, pasta, you’ll end up having an underdeveloped jaw due to the lack of chewing required.
    Ancient humans before agriculture had far stronger jaws and straight teeth because they ate far more tough uncooked raw vegetables, seeds, nuts, and whole grains. Asian countries that live off starch-based diets today have epidemics of weak underdeveloped jaws, teeth overcrowding, and other dental issues, in spite of the fact their diets are healthy and they live longer.
    It doesn’t take a genius to realize that eating a diet composed of mostly soft starches is going to result in an underdeveloped jaw. It’s a major overlooked side effect of going starch-based that will negatively effect your quality of life, especially for men. You do not want your son to have an underdeveloped jaw, trust me. This can be compensated for by adding plenty of nuts, seeds, and raw vegetables to the diet to help stimulate jaw growth and making sure to teach your children to breath through their noses and have good oral posture..

    i eat a cup of almonds almost every day. I started about a year ago. since then I lost almost 60 pounds. almonds are a great source of iron and protein for vegetarians. I find that they are filling in fact, and at least you are not getting those calories from sugar coated treats or high calorie drinks. anyway, i could see how eating nuts could be a problem for some and good that you are warning about how high in fat they are. I find almonds especially (wouldn't recomend other nuts) work for me!

    Ever tried to cultivate, thresh and DEHULL rice in order to be able to consume it? I think eating grain starches is far more time consuming than cracking up nutshells that didn't require land preparation nor labor intensive planting and weeding. If corn seems to be easier to harvest, it still requires the long process of nixtamalization before being consumable.

    • @jaym9846
      @jaym9846 9 лет назад

      We know of many large civilizations that lived on grains.
      Why do you think we don't have any that survived on nuts?

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 9 лет назад

      Jay M We don't actually know they lived ON grains, we know they consumed some amount of grains. It is very clear, however, that all small grains are a risky choice for a staple food in the absence of industrial technology. I would not argue that civilizations survived on nuts either, since most nuts have an inappropriate fatty acid composition to be consumed in larger quantities and meet caloric demands. With chestnuts it's different, however, once harvested, these nuts are highly perishable.
      The information on food choices of ancient civilizations we have (for instance based on pollen deposition) cannot be quantified and also it is not possible to tell about the use of the different detected plant foods with certainty.

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 7 лет назад

      I agree, but chestnuts are not grains. Dehulling chestnuts before eating is a lot more efficient than dehulling grains which take 20 seeds for 1g of food. also, chestnuts don't require tillage, once established they produce seeds more or less every year.
      in europe the most common archeological remains of cereal grains are actually burned. most of the grains cultivated many thousand years ago were actually hulled (unlike wheat and rye), and an efficient dehulling method was absolutely essential to their consumption. it could be that they burned away the hulls, though we would need to test this technique

      definitely have a tablespoon of peanutbutter and flaxseed if you want a day. that won't hurt you at all, just get most of your calories from starches.
      the goal of the diet is 80/10/10, so if you are trying to gain weight back, you are probably eating 2500-2800ish calories im guessing (total random guess don't take the number too seriously), so you can get around 200-300 calories from fat a day and be perfectly in range

    Starch, grains. It seems to me, in nature only birds eat it. Please correct me if I am mistaken, but don't we need mills and grinders and lot's of cooking to make it eatable? Fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, those seem readily available to me. Meat is kind of cruel, and most needs cooking to be any tasteful and so forth. So I can imagine that could be omitted.. looking at nature.

      Good point, Pierre. In nature, seed plants have mechanisms that scatter their seeds. You touch the plant, you get a seed or two, while the plant shoots the seeds in every direction. It's hard to get a lot. But when humans domesticated plants, they bred out the mechanisms that scattered seeds. I hope you enjoyed that. My Anthropology degree cost me a hundred grand, and that's the only thing I learned.

    I have Fatty Liver and pre-diabetic and high triglicerides, LDL cholesterol have gallbladder polyps and leaky gut with Gluten/dairy allergy/intolerance, have GERD/Hiatus hernia.
    If I go High Carb Low Fat as in the McDougal diet I find I feel good but within days my visceral fat went from 14 to 15.5, If I go on a low carb diet my visceral fat goes back to 14 within a few days (no exercise though just diet).
    Low carb is good for fatty liver and to avoid gallbladder stasis, and yet vegan high carbers say that fat is the problem with lets say diabetes, fat in the cells get in the way and your body keeps pumping out insulin until it gets knackered and you get diabetes type 2.
    So if a person is pre-diabetic, fatty liver, High Triglycerides, high LDL Cholesterol and sluggish liver/gallbladder, so what do I do in my situation, which diet I mean?

    Rare, exotic foods are not meant to be eaten? Really? None of them? They are all unhealthy? Huh? And are nuts really that exotic? Blackberries, for example, are far more hard to come by than nuts, yet they are loaded with micro-nutrients. Are those also not meant to be eaten? Sometimes this guy says some really smart things. But not so much in this particular video. Must have forgotten to take his logic pills that day.

    • @toddrandall473

      I think you miss the point. Nuts are very calorie dense. When you eat them without limits it's easy to get too much fat in ones diet. Nuts are very easy to eat in large quantities these days. He's simply asking us to be aware of this.

    • @vanessavanandel7919
      @vanessavanandel7919 9 лет назад +2

      You can't compare black berries to nuts at all. Maybe where you live they don't grow locally so they shouldn't be a major part of your died. But here in B.C. Canada tons of them grow wild around the Vancouver area that they don't even need to be planted. I'm sure where you live there's some sort major primary fruit that grows(unless you live in a very cold climate) nuts and avocados are more jar to come by no matter where they grow

Btw, my only agenda in sharing with you is what I've find true for me through and though. And just so happens I'm just a human, like all the rest of us humans for the most part,... I'm sharing with you standard fundamentals of human nutrition needs. Though there is some variability per person depending on environmental circumstances, lifestyle, and personal biology.

    Richard, what would you eat living in the wild? which is what Homo sapiens has done for most of its existence, it's even difficult for omnivores, it's a lot of work,.. how would a vegan do?
    But even besides that point, it all comes down to what works reasonably best or best for our health, even domesticated.
    Omnivorism wins as a matter of results, not ideology.

    I am a new vegan. I have been hearing that nuts, seeds and avocados balance hormones and good for health. So I eat them as part of my good fats. Does that mean I don't need to eat them for weight loss and general health? Or should I get my healthy fat from somewhere else?

    • @libraryofthemind
      @libraryofthemind 7 лет назад

      Nuts and seeds are great... they are not only full of healthy fats they also have heaps of other vitamins and minerals in them! Plus protein and give you energy. You don't need that many nuts, I think the recommendation from most health recommendations is about 30g... but I eat about 75g a day with oatmeal and my LDL cut down by 1/3!! but that's my experience anyway.. everyone is different.. if you exercise more then you can eat more... if you exercise less and you want to lose weight don't consume as much. but I've also seen other research showing that nuts dont make you put on weight anyway... with reasonable servings.

    First of all, humans are of biological physiological necessity, omnivores. I know this through and through with my body going on in depth experience since 1984 when I was age 15, I'm 45 now. Humanity developed as a species making and using fire and cooking food(and thriving on the cooked food), it's how we evolved. My body reveals by response. You are the hypnotized one, by the vegan and raw religion. Life and optimums are variable though.

      +Rocío Suárez Galán You shouldn't be worrying about nut milk. If you just glance at the nutrition information, you can see that the calories are so low and the percentage of fat is so low that it's not a big deal at all--nowhere near the same as eating a handful of nuts. And it's better than using soy milk or something. I'm not a dietitian, but I've never had any problems at all with nut milks and I don't know anyone who has.

    What you just cited, i.e. "it's all a matter of balance..." is what is a religion. Because it's based on what "sounds good" to you, instead of nutritional data. Many vegans today chose their lifestyle because it's where objective nutritional research led them. If you're really interested, I can recommend Plant Positive's youtube channel - arguably the best online resource for a broad comparison of peer-reviewed literature behind plant-based diets and meat-based diets: watch?v=QImWYirF0es

    I like John Mcdougal and I follow a starch based diet. However there is a massive contradiction in what he is saying versus what say Micheal Greger says about nut intake on a daily basis. Michael Greger recommends 20 grams of nuts per day for heart health (backed up with hard data). Basically Dr Mcdougal is saying to stay away from nuts in this video - or to have them a few times per year ! That is the message I am receiving. Very confusing. If he means a few nuts per day is ok, then he has a responsibility to say that in this video, otherwise it's wasting peoples time. Like I said I do like John Mcdougal and it's because of him I am on starches. Nuff said. :)
