When I moved to a starch based diet I was able to work out twice as hard and lose most of my excess fat. I'm down to 15% body fat thanks to John McDougall.

I’m down 40 pounds since December using intermittent fasting (18-6) two meals a day (no snacks) and I eat anything I want. If you have a specific illness, say lactose intolerance, sure stop dairy. If you have heart disease, stop saturated fat. If you gave type 2 diabetes, stop simple carbs and sugar. If you’re healthy, just eat smarter (no processed or refined food, sugar, fried, tobacco, alcohol etc.) Also, exercise 4-5 times a week. You’ll be just fine.

The most recent videos I saw of Dr McDougall were from a year ago and he looked very, very frail. He was still sharp but did not look healthy. I give him a pass because our mortal bodies no matter how well we care for them will whither and die. Some people look amazing at 80 and 90 but not everyone does.
I do pray he is doing well.. he, his wife and family.

I discovered Dr McDougall last November just before Thanksgiving and made the transition the Sunday after Thanksgiving. 10 months later I weigh 210 pounds after losing 140 pounds from 350 to 210. Run 4.5 miles Monday through Friday mornings after I get off my third shift job. About to start running 5K’s after a family member asked me if I wanted to run one with her. Feel better than I ever have at 53 years of age. Attending the funerals of way too many of my Class of 83 Classmates over the past three years told me I had to make a change. So glad I discovered the lifestyle. It totally changed my life.

I am a Hindu monk. Our diet contains a lot of dairy, oil and sugar. After 3 years as a monk I weighed 240lbs (I'm 5ft 9in, 35 years old). I got diagnosed with prediabetes and got serious about my health. I adopted a whole food, plant based life (not diet) and after only 7 months, I lost 70lbs and reversed my pre diabetes. I feel better that when I was 20! And I even get those random erections from out of nowhere, like when I was a teenager. Energy level to match.

Congratulations... But why is it that people always assume they've found THE diet and want to stay on it for life? Plant based diets are good for you in the short term, but after a couple of years or so they tend to take their toll. Remember what the doctor said here- The people who he studied that were very healthy DID eat meat. Just smaller amounts of it. I'm not sure why he's ignoring that and promoting a no-meat diet. There is a big difference.

When I moved to Turkey from America, and after spending time here, I had seen a 90 yr old woman climbing a ladder to pick olives, I had heard of several women in my family who had zero menopause symtoms, I had witnessed good health into old age. My Turkish husband and I have many times discussed different diets and the difference in health & lifestyle between the US and Turkey, comparing notes and such. Neither of us trust what I call "the system." If we have ailments, we both refuse to go see a doctor. But finding what is good and right and true is so very hard. I proposed to my husband a year ago that i felt something was greatly wrong with humans drinking cow's milk, since we are not cows. He, of course, begs to differ since the whole of the culture here is based on dairy such as eggs, cheeses and yogurt. I am lactose intollerant so I am a wee bit more aware of dairy issues. Recently I started having great pain in my ankles and right hip and legs in general. And by chance I happened to stumble upon your videos about the starch-based diet. I was convinced that it must be true for all the evidence you presented. So yesterday I resolved to change my eating habits. My family is doing well, so the fridge is often full with food, along with large blocks of feta cheese, chocolates, and anything else that might fancy a child's taste buds or a Turk's fancy, including raki, the centerpiece of Turk socialization: their national liquor. My first attempt on my first day consisted of 5 small potatoes with salt and green onions from our garden. (2 potatoes in the morning and 3 in the evening) It was greatly satisfying. But I also had a Snickers and a large cookie from the local bakery. Also I drinkncoffee every morning. I loathe milk manufacturers as you do, so I have resolved never to use powder creamer in my coffee anymore since it contains hydrated milk proteins. I can't go cold turkey, so I will continue my coffee for now, only without the creamer. And no more eggs, cheese, milk or yogurt for me. I am finished with all that, thanks to you, Dr. McDougall. I am excited to prove to my husband the weight I will gave lost after changing my diet. My husband is not on board, but he will be. After his mother sees the changes, mshe will surely badger him. Haha!!! Thank you, again. You're an angel. (I am 51 yrs old btw)

I had nothing wrong with me. I eat mostly vegetables and try to stay away from meat. Gonna do a drastic change as far as cheese goes and other dairy products. Sugar is my big downfall. Love this Dr's presentation. I also agree about pesticides and herbicides. Man has and is killing the earth.

Bren Murphy "......and feel the benefits almost immediately." That hit the nail on the head. I always felt my system (intestines, bowls, and gut in general) were always full. The first day that I ate only water-cooked potatoes with salt and a side of green onions, I felt light as a feather and was completely satisfied. The next day I felt even more normal (like I used to when I was much younger). The effects and benefits are indeed almost immediate.

The people of our village in India are eating the same Starch heavy diet for ages...Rice (2 servings/day), Fruits, Nuts, Vegetables, Fish (from local sources) Milk (locally obtained), Honey and Ghee. They eat a very little meat (1-2 servings a week) and that's all. They are the healthiest people I know. They are always in touch with Nature ( Soil, Sun & Water ) and prefer home cooked food. They sleep on time and would wake up early in the morning. My grandfather passed away at the age of 86. He was a very wise man. On the contrary, the current generation is quite unhealthy. They eat a lot of meat, processed food( Potato chips, noodles, sweets etc.) and follow a sedentary lifestyle. They consume alcohol regularly and are overweight. We really need to go back to our roots and live life as it's intended to. Thanks.

Dr. McDougall was a superb leader in proper nutrition. 7 years now I've been on the program and it fixed my high cholesterol, which was going up and up previously. It went to 210 mg/dl, with high being over 200. I took a year to get tested again but it measured 120, ideal. less than 150 is ideal. LDL was around 75 too, a very good number especially for someone without any cardiac issues.
The diet also fixed high blood pressure, high resting heart rate and high weight. 7 years later, now, all are good except blood pressure diastolic is slightly high at around 83.
I might be able to fix that with slightly more weight loss and more careful dietary salt control. I'm working on both.

I agree! Vegetables amd fruits are okay, but you need to keep on eating because you always feel hungry, but when you eat rice, corn, potatoes, and other starchy whole foods, you feel full and energized. Im a Filipino, and I eat rice thrice a day. Diabetes isnt a common diseade here but some develop it not because of the rice but because of over consumption of meats and processed sugars. My grandparents were healthy eating rice - even white rice! We eat a lot of vegetables on each meal.

Being overweight leads to type 2 diabetes in people who are vulnerable to the disease. In different countries, the excess of calories comes from different food categories and that changes.
Type 2 diabetes is completely reversible in 100% of those with the disease, by losing enough weight. If it's not gone, lose more weight. Sometimes it has to be a lot of weight, below the standard 'overweight' category doctors say.

I had Intersussesion of the intestines at 15 months old, I had 3 feet of my intestines removed due to a perforated intestine. I have been told I may have MS.In my 30-40’s I had 18 surgeries due to more perforations. I have had 34 surgeries altogether including breast cancer surgery and radiation. I am 144 lbs at 5’3. Being of Italian descent we ate lots of pasta in a tomato, pork sausage, meatballs, and cubed beef, the old 8 hour sauce. With macaroni, ricotta cheese, sheep’s milk sharp cheese and mozzarella. My mother wanted to fatten us up as we were all very thin. Except my brother Charlie none of us were chubby as a baby. I believe because he was on soy milk
as an infant. She was told breast milk was not good for us. That was in the 40’s when I was born and it was far more important to stuff bombs than nurse our babies. She could have been a professional pastry chef. We had decadent homemade deserts every night. Tons of whipped cream covered cakes and Danish pastries. In those days, the 50’s, we were led to believe that margarine was much better for us than pure butter. My mother made her own with a Crisco fat base and lots of orange or yellow dye. She made it in huge quantities as she used it in most of her cooking. She formed it into a big yellow cake, I can’t count how many times I stuck my finger into it, mmm yum? No, but it looked so good who could resist it? She, as everyone in our family, also smoked, I started at 12, had full permission at 16. I stopped at 30. She died at 49, most of my aunts and uncles died before they were 61. One of my uncles lived till he was almost 100. My Aunt Millie cooked healthy and he stopped smoking.
Thank you for this information on rice diets maybe I will live a little longer. My younger brother died at 67. Amazingly, I am still around at age 79.

This led me to do my own research and I decided to try fermenting vegetables. I made some plant based kimchi and let it ferment for six weeks for the highest amount of probiotics. I only had a tiny bowl and my three years of chronic constipation was gone.
My guess is the pollution, antibiotics, stress ect could possibly lower the bacteria in our intestines to the point of not being able to digest food anymore. I hope my experience helps.

I just don't understand it. I got rid of type 2 diabetes, thyroid and gout problems by mainly only eating meat and some leafy green veggies. Had to remove all grains and starches to stabilize my glucose levels and lost 60 lbs. How can keto, vegan and starch only diets all work except when we eat them all together. My blood sugar goes thru the roof if I eat starches and grains. Other people say they got rid of these same medical conditions by removing meat. Just doesn't make sense to me.

It's because mixing fats with carbs is the real problem. When you eat fats with carbs, your body burns off the fats first, and the carbs get stuck into your blood instead of being burned off for energy. So you end up with type 2 diabetes.
That's all type 2 diabetes is, it doesn't really exist. It's just a buzzword for "you mixed 2 things that your body can't process at the same time"

I think the reason why most Americans won’t give up the Standard American Diet is because of it is a social thing and they don’t want to think about it. They don’t want to learn to do something new, even if it means keeping their feet. But then some do want to keep their feet and change. But that is only when this is offered as a viable solution;l
Kaiser Permanente, Lancaster, CA, is doing that. I was fortunate while living there to have their one Plant-Based physician to be my doctor.
He worked with their podiatrist and was able to save a diabetic’s feet. His own father, likewise diabetic, had both feet amputated. It crushed my doctor’s heart. He learned about Plant-Based, lost lots of weight himself and has not let this fate befall others.
I am sure he personally has heartache that they did not find Plant-Based soon enough. But life is not fair, is it?

How can you say you don't need animal products and then supplement with B12? Seems to me Mcdougall's diet should call for people to eat oysters or some natural way to get B12. I eat sweet potatoes, grits, oatmeal, quinoa etc, along with fruits and vegetables, but I also eat eggs and oysters. I am lean and have excellent cholesterol. I certainly think the paleo diet is extreme and agree with Mcdougall about grains but his diet seems extreme as well, not bashing just my opinion.

B12 isn’t naturally found in animal foods that you mentioned. It’s found in bacteria.
It’s theorized that people used to get their B12 from eating unsanitized vegetables and produce, and modern sanitation has removed that. Sure, one *can* find a bit of B12 in animal foods, but supplementing seems to be the best known way to get B12.

This is the definition of "First World Problems" but when I try to eat a more starch based/plant based diet, I fail every time & go back to my old ways because I can't eat enough. having lived off of hyper palatable fast food/junk food my entire life where I can eat a meal in 10 minutes and feel full and satisfied (albeit terrible), it is so hard to sit down for every meal and force myself to eat a ridiculous amount of food to feel full at all. I end up getting tired of chewing and can't seem to eat enough so I resort to processed junk to feel some satisfaction/fullness. & when I try to implement more smoothies or blended soups, I never feel satisfied either -_- Any tips?

What program are you following? Dr. McDougall's Starch Solution book? It's true that some people can find they lose weight more than they want, and have to add more calorie-dense foods. But there are plenty of great foods - pizzas, burgers, burritos - you name it - that you can eat on a starch-based diet. So not sure why you would have to eat an enormous amount to get what you want. Are you referring to "pleasure trap" foods where you crave unhealthy junk food and have problems for that reason?

I have loosely followed the starch solution book but mostly have tried just eating more plant foods with minimal processed foods. I guess I'm referring to having to eat a ton of food with meals like potatoes or rice with beans and vegetables (I watch your daughters' channel for meal ideas) and after a small serving of a meal like that, I feel like I physically can't bring myself to eat anymore but I'm still very very hungry. I do also constantly crave unhealthy pleasure trap foods which always derail me in my efforts to eat better time and time again. As a food addict, I feel like I will most likely have to cut all of those foods out cold turkey in order to ever get over my addiction which is extremely difficult... I tend to go back and forth between trying to cut pleasure trap foods out slowly and cutting them out completely but I can never stick to it.

@@countmeworthy I've suffered with severe RA for some 20 years. Within 3 days of switching to a whole food, plant-based lifestyle I didn't feel joint pain. First time in so many years. I still can't believe this was possible. But Im learning that I'm the exception, so don't get discouraged if it doesn't happen that fast. Every testimonial I've read, people report improvement in a slow pace. Mobility itself hasn't changed much, but I don't care as long as the pain is gone and it is. I focus on daily dark leafy greens, so lots of spinach everywhere and every day: in my smoothie, salads of course, soups, rice and beans, etc. I add it to everything. But I try to eat a variety of vegetables, too. I love potatoes and eat them regularly. For example I make soups weekly and always load them with potatoes besides everything else (carrots, celery, onion, lentils, red peppers, etc.). Or I roast them or bake them. I eat lots of black beans and rice. I load that with chopped veggies (salad style) and sprinkle lime juice all over. Eat that with avocado slices, etc. There's really a huge variety to choose from. I've only been doing this since Nov 2017, so I'm still a rookie cook. Chef AJ's channel as well as Jane Esselstyn's channel on RUclips have been a huge help. Oh, and Cooking with Plants channel is fantastic too. Best wishes to you!

Moving from the American diet to starchy diet is a huge improvement, but it is still not the ideal diet for humans. But moving forward from that, as all animals are eating without cooking, why would the humans be any different ? All the starches that he mentions NEED to be cooked. Eating only raw fruits and vegetables seems so radical only because we have departed from eating fruits and vegetables so long ago. The starch based diet is proven over thousands of years, and is the best widespread diet, but it is not the best.

With all respects to Dr. McDougall, I want to comment. Yes, there are lot of valid points in what he is saying. I can agree that he met more healthy and long living people who were taking starch based diet, when compared with the Americans of his life time. I can also agree that Vegetarian diet is more healthy than Non Vegetarian diet. But, the following statements are highly questionable or wrong. If we are designed to eat rice, wheat, and other grains, we should feel like eating them as they are without processing. Need of cooking and other processing them means we are not designed to eat them. But, we have developed eating them using processing. Also, the Asians he met (I am an Asian, and all my previous ancestors including myself have been vegetarian only) may be much healthier than the Americans he met or knew. But, that does not mean that those Asians cannot further improve their health and diet. Improvement in Diet is always possible, even for the person who is very very very healthy at a given moment. So, in the least, the title of this video is wrong stating "Designed To Eat". On the other hand, we can say we are designed to eat fruits, vegetables, roots, nuts, seeds, and beans when they are soft. Rice, Wheat, Millet, Legumes are eatable directly when they are soft before drying them.

Good health does not = Huge muscles.
Good health does not = Huge amounts of unused protein, and unused calories, etc.
Good health IS consumption of a wide variety of plant foods, not too much animal foods, plus regular exercise and sleep. And with NATURAL, WHOLE plant foods, the sorts of foods that are somewhat more calorie dense are those that it is more "natural" to eat more of... Potatoes, bananas, oranges, nuts, beans, rice, etc. Veggies are great as well, but they truly are "medicine", not "fuel foods", thus, the reason we don't eat buckets of vegetables every day, most of us, is simply because veggies are meant to compliment starches, beans, nuts and fruits, as they are extremely lean, protein-dense, not sweet foods, etc. More veggies is always great, but at a certain point, I mean, how much do you really need? A fair amount, most certainly, but 1 kale smoothie a day is probably going to be more than enough, along with a salad and some cooked greens every day...
