When it came to local malls, The Exton Square Mall was always seen as the one that was a bit more fancier then the rest. Featuring many unique stores, with a clean and modern aesthetic, it was always a treat to visit. By the early 2000s most smaller malls in the area were starting to suffer, being overshadowed by the massive King Of Prussia Mall, a number of new strip malls, and online shopping. However the Exton Square Mall seamed to hang on, going mostly unfazed. Unfortunately though in what almost seemed like overnight, stores began to close and attendance sharply fell. Today the mall feels like it’s eerily holding on for life, sitting mostly empty with only a few stores remaining, including two anchor stores, and a handful of smaller chain stores to bring in customers. With owners who are supposedly broke, a failed sale attempt, and a lot of local land being turned into apartments complexes, who knows what the fate of The Exton Square Mall will be?

I grew up with this mall just at the tail end of its hay days 2005 - 2015. When i was a kid my family would go to the restaurant by the main entrance, then afterwards walked around the bustling mall to burn off our full stomachs. The fountain was amazing, miss that old water smells and the sounds that echoed throughout. Being a gamer I'd always go into, not 1, but the 2 gamestops that they once had or the small arcade back in the day before round 1. I still stop in from time to time, and to see what it once was at full occupancy to now is very sad. Thank you for documenting whats left. Exton mall will be missed

I grew up with this mall. In the 80s it was a literal square with 2 floors that were half of a box. It was kinda dungeon-like and dark. Then they made the top floor a full square and lightened everything up. Added a bunch of anchor stores and it was pretty busy. I worked at the Sears in late 2003 to mid 2004. It is sad to see it fading away. You convinced me to get in there again before the end of the year. Great video!

Yea. I don’t think it has much longer unfortunately. And A LOT of new house complexes have been going up in that area. So my bet is it will eventually be torn down for new condos.

@@RetroRestStop I hope not. If it does get torn down i'd rather see somethin else, like new activities to do in the area cause im tired of seeing all the townhomes or condos

@@ItsChris100I agree. The amount of new housing around here is insane.

When I was in 9th grade I started a rumor about myself that I fell into that big fountain in front of Strawbridge. I worked in the Sears when I was in college. So many great memories at this mall. Great video!

I miss what it once was. Used to hang out there whenever I could, back in the '90s and early-to-mid-Aughts. The Tilt arcade there was my jam up until it closed, and I still sometimes used to swing by the food court even afterwards.
It's a damn shame it's gone so far downhill. There needs to be something done to revitalize the property, even if the original usage won't work anymore.

I didn't grow up with this mall, but I did end up going down there a lot for Round1 for a couple years lol. There used to be a sushi place in the food court, it's prolly the best sushi I had at the food court price range. It's also the first place I ever tried bubble tea. I was legit shocked to see this video posted, it still had so many stores in it and healthy foot traffic last time I was there. I honestly miss when malls were big, I have so many good memories of them. I'm glad to see someone still going around the area I grew up documenting these places so I can look back on them, reminisce about them, and hear someone else's memories of them

King of Prussia mall (14 miles east) pretty much killed all the malls in the PHL area.

This was MY mall in the mid-90's as a WCU student. I had my Structure's credit card. That's how I dressed myself during those years.

11:50 It was a Sbarro's before it was Marinella Pizza, which was renamed to Mariabella Pizza. I also miss Sarku Japan, Lasaka Sushi, and Mandarin Express

Most of the stores moved Mainstreet down the road.

I was actually surprised how many stores were open - I haven't been there for a couple years, but I feel like it was much more empty the last time I saw it. I'd heard a few years ago that the owner was not renewing leases ahead of a planned sale or renovation and that's when so many stores started closing.. and obviously that never panned out so now they're getting creative with some of the spaces, like whatever that Sam Goody was being used for. There was also a little panic this year because Exton didn't book their usual Santa (assuming the mall would be closed by then?) so he moved to the Springfield Mall, and then Exton ended up booking someone else, so parents had to decide if it was worth the drive to Delco to take their kids to the "real" Santa 😆

Yea… We went to Exton to see our favorite Santa as usual and were pretty upset to see someone else. We might still head to Springfield this week to see our favorite of Santa’s helpers.
