    With Stranger Things Season 4 finally out, a particular reference that opens the show in its very first season gets rejuvenated in our heads. Season 1 Episode 1 opened with Dustin, Will, Lucas, and Mike playing Dungeons & Dragons, a fantasy tabletop role-playing game.
    Players get to create their own characters within a fantasy setting. They go on adventures, fight adversaries, and gain a lot of knowledge on the way. With such a diverse setting in place, it is only natural for the game to branch out into other territories of media. This gave birth to the 1983 cartoon of the same name.
    In this cartoon, we see six kids hopping onto the Dungeons & Dragons ride at an amusement park. It is possible that they have played the game in the past which is why they were excited to go on that ride. However, they find themselves being teleported into a different realm where they must go on adventures and fight evil with their new powers but all the while hoping to get back home.
    Several new places such as desolate graveyards, dungeons that can replenish magical powers, and a beautiful valley inhabited by unicorns add to the world-building of the story. This also brings in a range of evil creatures that oppose the main cast but nevertheless boast incredible character designs.

    It was on Saturday morning TV in the UK. They'd split it into two halves usually, just to keep you watching the show. I did try watching some again about 20 years ago but then remembered they never did finish it properly.

    I loved this series as a kid back when it originally aired on Saturday mornings. It was my favourite cartoon between 1983 and 1986. I didn’t even get into playing D&D until a couple of years after the show was cancelled.
    As a (now) die hard D&D gamer (and TTRPG fan in general), I can see why some of my fellow gamers would have been disappointed with the show. It is very watered down for the younger audience. However that’s just the nature of the beast when dealing with kids shows that are based on more mature content.
    Dungeons and Dragons is a very early example of this in practice, but it’s happened quite often ever since. There’s the Robocop animated series, Rambo & The Force of Freedom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Conan The Adventurer the animated series, Highlander the animated series, Police Academy the animated series, the list just goes on and on.
    Luckily modern cartoons aren’t as restrictive, and can deal with more mature content while still being appropriate for children. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a perfect example of that in practice. The 2002 reboots of He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are also great examples. Children don’t need to be talked down to or condescended to in their televised entertainment. They just need to be entertained. And if they can be taught a moral lesson along the way, then so much the better.
    I have the entire Dungeons and Dragons cartoon on DVD. It’s the boxed set that came with the players booklet that would allow fans to play as the characters from the series in an actual D&D 3.5 game. I’ve never taken the opportunity to actually play the characters in an RPG adventure, but it’s cool that I have the ability to do so at some point.

    I got the whole show for Christmas this past year (2021) after watching it here on RUclips and now I can see it any time I want without having to worry about it being taken down; I also got the two movies from the 2000s on DVD. Anyway, my playing the game has been erratic for some time now and I'm even formulating a campaign that could have movie potential if I can make the story believable without having to sacrifice much (if any) "content" from my vision; writing a book for it might be more feasible than a movie though.

      My mother took us to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the Drive-in Double Feature sometime in 80-81. It was a cheap Drive-In where they showed older movies and some nights they would show newer releases. I wasn't even in school yet. • @clit_niblr0375
      @clit_niblr0375 2 года назад +1

      Negative. Being episodic allowed for character development and for expanded in-world building. Change that and you ruin it the same way at one point someone wanted to do a hour and a half Game of Thrones film. A PG-rated GoT film. Yeah, good luck trying to tell a decent story by cramming several books into an hour and a half movie.

    • @c-j-p
      @c-j-p 2 года назад +1

      @@clit_niblr0375 What draws people in is a good story. Often that includes character development. The best character development is done through arcs. Having arcs makes the series less episodic because a single arc can span multiple episodes and even a whole season. Arcs do not need to focus on an individual. They can focus on an event and how the characters react to it. This is the basis of storytelling. The character development in the show was limited to a single episode. So lessons learned did not transition over to another episode. The same sort of conflicts occurred, the same sort of character flaws, and so on. What would have been great is if Eric became more heroic than a coward and Presto more confident in his magic. They showed this in the fan made Requiem video. It's a good watch.

      They did a fan-made ending called Requiem. They used the original scenario for the last episode.

    15:45 Indeed there was a lot of milksops believing all sorts of nonsense about for example rpg in general in those times...
    I loved this show whenever I could watch it. (Not much of that happening in Sweden as the mentioned "milksops" were largely in charge.

    It was D&D fans that disapproved of the show? It wasn't the Satanic Panic? Something tells me you never even heard of the show until they gave you this script.

      I don’t think it was either. It just suffered from no dedicated toy line. Everything he’s quoting the same was said about He-man.

      well the cartoon characters make a "sort-of" cameo in the recent Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film, so THAT must count

    Wow, your narrators really need to do a better job on presentation. Way to many instances of "I'm just reading off this page in front of me" where there intonation doesn't align with the content in this. None the less the poor clipping where audio repeats, another frequent flaw with your videos.I think in some your videos this may be flaws with the scripting, but here just poor editing.

    I stand that no long time player of ttrpg's will really ever enjoy a film or animated version of their favorite ttrpg.
    The translation to film from game is never 1:1 and can't be. It's bad enough in video game based films where they have concrete images to work from and a unified mood to the world. But there's too much independent interpretation in ttrpgs. There is no really unified vision of that world, so in attempting to please one part of the audience you WILL alienate the rest

    omg the narrator sounds like a machine, plus his diction... I really love your channel and videos but had to stop watching after a couple mins, just unbearable.

    It's based on Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, not Dungeons and Dragons. There are no Rangers, Barbarians, Chevaliers, nor Acrobats in Dungeons and Dragons. Tiamat, shadow demons, etc AD&D
