- The 80s was a sacred decade for cartoon enthusiasts. Kids growing up in that era would eagerly wait for the Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons for some of the best cartoon shows ever created. These shows shaped an entire generation and are terribly dear to the fans even after all these years.
In this video, we will take you for a heavy dose of nostalgia as we bring you some of the lost gems from that era. The following cartoons are criminally underrated and ended sooner than they should have. They might not have been on for very long, but they did provide some of the best memories of our childhood. Enjoy a slice of the golden history of cartoons!

SilverHawks, Go Bots, GI Joe, Thundercats, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, He-Man, Transformers, Thunder the Barbarian and Rambo, and BraveStarr.. these were and are some of my favorite cartoons
Always liked braveStarr
Don't forget Robotech!
Blackstarr.. Starblazers
Voltron was easily one of the greatest cartoons of all time
You named most of my favorites!
Dungeon and Dragons by far my favorite on this list. The music, the story line just epic.
I didn't even think it should make the list, it was dreadfully awful.
Did it not drive you insane watching the same episodes over and over again?
here... the final episode of D&D, obviously a fan animation, but following the original script.
Truly a spectacular creation.
It really feels like it's original.
Enjoy

Finally someone acknowledged cartoons aired on weekday afternoons and not just Saturday mornings.
Ulysses may be gone but not forgotten, 40 years later and I can still remember all the words to the intro song, it was a show that truly captured my young imagination.

Dungeon and Dragons hurt the most. This was hands down one of the best cartoons in the 80's.
Both me and my sister loved watching it on Saturday mornings. I ended up buying the complete dvd collection a while back but I still wanna bluray release of it.🙂
Yeah I was so upset as a kid, they never got a chance to go home!
It was shame we didn't get a ending or few more seasons hope someone picks it up for a movie franchise
Definitely deserves a movie. There is an unofficial ending floating around on RUclips based on the actual final script apparently.

I know now we have several cable channels and streaming services that provide animated shows, but I feel that the Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons of the 80s and 90s provided so much more.
right, we had some wild and wacky commercials and segments that fit in between toons, at least we have ways to still watch cartoons, but those who grew up on Saturday mornings, there just is no replicating that feeling.
@@UltimateGamerCC School House Rocks was so fun!
Hurry off the bus just to catch cartoons
@@coreywuertz715 i was homeschooled, so i didnt have to worry about that. XD
@@shallendor it wasnt bad, i was willing to watch it in between shows.
Dungeons and dragons did have an ending but it was in comic book and audio form. It turns out that the dungeon master actually brought those kids to that world of dungeons and dragons, and when he was giving them ways to escape in riddles and they failed escaping it was actually his plan that they didn't escape. He needed them there in order to rescue his son who turned out to be venger... Which was a surprise to me, but in the end the dungeon master got his son back (venger looked totally different when he was no longer venger) and he sent the children home. It was a very moving and sweet, exciting ending.
Dungeons and dragons has got to be my favorite cartoon of all time! So good!
I used to love watching Ulysses 31, what an amazing show and awesome intro! 👍👍
Damn straight. When Dungeons and Dragons got cancelled before the kids found thier way home, I was seriously P.O.ed!
There is a final episode. An officially written, but never produced and thusly was fan-made. Dungeons and Dragons: Requiem; here on YT!
I don’t think Josie and the pussycats in outer space got home either, as well as the animated cast of happy days
Thought there was an episode where some got home, but decided to return so they could bring everyone home.
YES !!!
Yup
The Silverhawks theme song goes way harder than it needs to. I loved that show when i was a kid
I'm still hoping they do a movie
Had to buy it on DVD for my collection 😁
When I was a kid, I was very lucky to have watched great cartoons like Thundercats, Bionic Six, The Mighty Orbots, Jonny Quest, Pirates of Dark Water, Robotech, Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, He Man, TMNT, The Herculoids, Young Samson and many more over the years when saturday morning cartoons ruled the earth.
yes yes and YES. Robotech , TMNT, Thundercats were AMAZING. i can still remember missing the episode when rick hunter gets injured...like in my mind i can still remember the gravity of it. LoL
Thundercats was so good because 3rd Earth was so weird and diverse.
YALL FORGOT STREET SHARKS THAT WAS A CLASSIC
Robotech is what caused my addiction to anime xD
Yep Pirates of Dark Water was a lot of fun, I wish it had a proper ending though

I’m so glad I was born in the 70’s and grew up in the 80’s to witness some cool cartoons and 80’s horror!. I feel for my teen sons generation, they will never know!!.
Same here, even though I have no children.

@@christinaflibotte6446 I was born in 83; remember most of this^^
Even though I was born in 1981 I was still able to be exposed to all the great cartoons of the 80s. My personal favorites that I grew up watching were Voltron, The Real Ghostbusters, Bionic Six, The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, The Inhumanoids, Defenders of the Earth, and the Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. Those were the cartoons that really spoke to me. My second favorite tier of cartoons that I liked were MASK, Bravestar, the Centurions, Cops, and Thundercats. Even though I loved Transformer toys and I owned quite a bunch of them, I didn’t care for the cartoon all that much. I also really liked the Gobot toy line but I also didn’t care for that cartoon either. When I look back at the 80s, I think of the best cartoon shows and the best toys that had a whole lot of play value. For anyone who was a child in the 80s we know that we experienced the coolest stuff and we got to live and play in a much simpler time that was also much more fun and relaxed unlike nowadays.
MASK is one of my favorite cartoons and toy lines of all time. I also loved Silverhawks, Thundar, and D&D. We had such great cartoons back then!
M.A.S.K was flooded my memories with good vibes.
Dungeons and Dragons cartoon made a huge success in Brazil, recently there was a brazilian commercial where they did a live action version of the cartoon (the kids went back to home this time hehehe)
I saw that commercial, and so loved it. The casting was so perfect!
I've seen that commercial very well made ^_^ Then again there is that radio drama on youtube, for what would have been the d&d cartoon final episode.
They actually posted the last one where they went home. Look up requiem.
@@Progearspec If you look up Requiem fan made, someone illustrated to the radio show recording that was written by the original writer of the show. It was a awesome ending and gave closure 35 years after the show went off air.
i have the dvd set and in the extras they do a reading of the final script for when the they defeat venger and get home.
Yes to Dungeons and Dragons, underrated gem.
I loved it growing up it was my favourite
Yes it was.
Yes, I even wish I had learned to play the board game of Dungeons and Dragons while I was still a kid.
A lot of people don't even know their living in the dungeons and dragons cartoon!!!!
Ahead of it's time
D&D and Thundar were my favorites! Never missed an episode as a kid. Times were so much better back then.
How did Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors not end up on this list. That show was way before its time. Sadly it had to compete against some of the truly great 80's cartoons so it got overlooked and forgotten. Lordy do i miss the 80's. Plopping down in front of the TV on Saturday mornings with a big bowl of cereal and just watching my favorite cartoons for hours. Or racing home from school to just barely make it in time for the afternoon cartoon block to start. And MTV played nothing but music videos lol. Good times man good times indeed.
You and me both! The 80's were the BEST decade!
I remember jayce and the wheel warriors but couldn't remember the name. Thanks
I wont forget dungeons and dragons in my whole lifetime.. So many emotions and memories attached to it from my childhood.

"and still live within that reality" lol couldnt have said it better myself , great times
Many years ago I walked into a comic book store in NYC and they had all the Thundar shows on dvd which I have to this day. It was underrated and I still love watching them to this day. Every morning before school and Saturdays in the late 70s, but especially the early 80s was amazing for animation.
Visionaries was awesome. I had them on VHS and loved watching them back to back. I vaguely remember an action figure with a hologram on it’s chest too.
It had a comic book to
A good chunk of the 80s cartoons were basically extended toy marketing campaigns lol. That probably helped contribute to the overall success of this golden era of cartoons. Saturday morning was the best. And then, after lunch we all went outside to play >'insert favourite show with appropriate toys'< with our friends.
That actually goes for cartoons going back to when they jumped off the movie screen onto television in the late 40s - on. All were selling something (ads, toys, cereal, other than just being entertainment for children.
10:34 The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon was a HUGE hit here in Brazil, at the time most of people didn't know the table RPG, but every 80's child saw the cartoon.
I had a friend from Brazil, and yeah she watched it as a kid and said the dungeon master character was the devil in the Brazil version....I was pretty surprised to find out she knew the series...she also taught me "tudo bem".
@@JasonChapmanwoofdog dungeon master character being the devil in Brazilian version is not accurate, this was just an urban legend that only die hard fans of the show would "know". Back in the day with no internet and zero access to information everything was a mistery and eventually some fake stories would build up in the underground somehow.
The story was just like you know in the us, but tudo bem.
And I might be wrong but I think the show was a hit worldwide...
Yes, dungeons and dragons was huge hit back in the 90s and 80s in Brazil.
Visionaries was a massive favourite of mine growing up. I was so sad when it wasn't giving a season 2, it had so much potential. Maybe a movie of this would work, the mix of tech and magic was cool and with today's CGI, it could be made to look very convincing.
Yeah such a shame was a classic series I had quite a few of the action figures wish I had kept in boxes now
Pound puppies also ended too soon too.
I wouldn't mention this idea outside of the chat, new cartoons are aight but way too woke and inclusive of issues we suffer today
Visionaries is the one, although the series started damn amazing in the first few episodes but started to even fade during the first season.
A few other notable mentions from my childhood:
- Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
- Defenders of the Earth
- Centurions
- Flash Gordon
- Around the World in 80 days
Maybe some edged out of 80’s into 90’s?
The above and the Visionaries series were epic!
My all time faves were Silver Hawks and D&D. I cried when they got cancelled.
THUNDAR THE BARBARIAN

the 70's and 80's were a special time for animation indeed. The times waking up for school and watching a little bit of cartoons, then racing home to watch the afternoon block of toons. Saturday mornings were really special. New shows would be on all the time. Sunday mornings were a hidden gem. And when you got the random Garfield and Charlie brown specials at night. I actually feel bad for kids that never got to experience that.
Hey what was so special about Sunday? I came up in the 70s and Sunday only had Davey and Goliath, a clay-mation show made by the Lutheran church! In my city it was all religious shows until 11:00 when football came on. No cartoons at all.😕
@@josebrown5961 i guess it depends where you were in the country. On the west coast, there was bionic six, marvel action hour, galtar and the golden lance, and even, for a very short time, dragon quest. There were multiple cartoons peppered on different channels on sunday mornings. Most would be over by 10 or 11 in the morning. Usually would start around 7 or 8. It really varied, and was super random at times. One of the great things i loved about growing up in the 80s for sure. One of the best things was superbook also!
Being a midwestern Bible Belt kid cost me cartoons on Sunday 😕 Thanks for letting me know.
@@josebrown5961 Sundays had the inhumanidoids. Which was an incredible cartoon. It only had like 13 episodes. It was pretty dark also.
Only lame cartoons came on Sundays in chicago. They pretty much killed all cartoons around year 2000. Network TV really sucks ass hard now
Absolutely. Had my Saturday planned out from 8:30 AM to 1 PM, I was watching cartoons. Dungeons and Dragons, Thundar the Barbarian, uhhh.. that guy who had half a sword and the bad guy had the other half… and of course the mainstream stuff like Transformers before they went to week days. What a time to be a kid.
How visionaries only got 1 season is a crime against humanity. What a tv show. For it’s time the animation was impressive

Dungeons and Dragons is the only cartoon that every episode made you think one of the main characters might actually get killed.
Maybe so, but I found Ulysses 31 much more bleak and depressing than Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons inspired me to play the game of the same name. 😀
Ever heard of robotech?
@@SimonAshworthWood I didn't even remember Ulysses 31 until you replied to my comment. I can't really comment on it except to say that I barely remember it...but I could never forget Dungeons and Dragons. I guess it's safe to say that for me one show left way more of an impression than the other.
@@fanboy98 I definitely remember Robotech. It was one of my favorites. Who didn't like Robotech? It was up there with Transformers and Voltron as one of the all time greatest. But I think watching Robotech...even as a kid it felt like a show for adults. I didn't really look at is as a cartoon like Transformers or Voltron. Even though those cartoons were smarter than most cartoons...they were still meant for kids. Robotech was on a different level. And yes...if I remember right whole squadrons use to get blown away every episode. But I never really believed that any of the main characters were going to die. If I remember right...it was kinda like Star Trek always killing the random guy on a mission...all the other ships that went out on a mission would get blown up on Robotech...but somehow the main characters always make it through. MASK’s mask designs were crazy good. They matched the characters and fashion making them recognizable and distinct., and the division of factions too. Crazy good detail.
I had the motorcycle-helicopter toy when was in elemetry school...
I was born and raised in Cincinnati and some of the kids I grew up around had parents that worked at Kenner. They would always have shelves and shelves of boxed Kenner toys in the basement like it was a museum
I didn't remember MASK, until I saw an episode, a few days ago.
I was so psyched when I got the Boulder Hill play set to go with my Matt Tracker flying Trans Am lol! I always wished the scale went with my GI Joes-- I had way more of them, lol!
@@sauditate4562 I had the semi . Now I cry at what it cost to replace one . 😭
Although not exactly on par with some on this list, I used to LOVE Galaxy High and Kidd Video! Granted Kidd Video had live action scenes in addition to the animated scenes, I still loved it.
Dungeons and Dragons/Thundar the Barbarian/Sectaurs - where my go to back in the day...:) good memories
Visionaries was awesome! So sad that it is forgotten.
Thundarr was ahead of its time. Amazing writing. I never missed an episode. The whole premise of the show, post apocalyptic earth, was very eerie. I could never get that image of the ocean liner jutting out of the ground, out of my head. I sure miss that show.
Totally agree.
Thundarr was just a He-Man/Conan rip off!
@@stonerproud2071 LOL. Not even close. This was years before He Man even existed.
@@stonerproud2071 actually was the other way. Thundarr was first.
@@stonerproud2071 Thundarr came out before those cartoons, so how was he a rip off of them?--if anything, he was a precursor to them!
My perfect list as a kid wow thanks for the memories!!
OMG....MASK and Visionaries! I'm so glad you mentioned both of those first. I had ALL the toys. Greatness well ahead of their times and shutdown way too soon.
The Adventures of The Galaxy Rangers was my favorite as a teen and The Legion of the Super Friends was my favorite as a little guy. I guess I'm missing Captain Kangaroo, Shazam and Isis, Loony Toons with Mel Blanc, etc
I approve! Galaxy Rangers never gets enough love.
I agree with you regarding The Galaxy Rangers! Need reboot just to get Zack's wife Psycocrystal back from the queen.
@@zillaphil50 You should check out the review of the show that I do. . I've managed to interview some of the writers.
In the MMO City of Heroes; I was in a Super Group called The Galaxy Rangers. We patterned our outfits after the characters of the cartoon.
I made some great online friends during those times; and several of us became real life friends. Meeting for dinners; concerts; staying over at one another's home while traveling across the country.
Inhumanoids deserved so much better. They actually had toys designed for another wave, and then they got the sales numbers. Pulled the entire series, including plans for a 2nd season. Shame too as they had prototypes for Blackthorn's new armor, Doctor Mangler, Tank, and Gagghoul... all fan favorites that would have sold.
Inhumanoids may been stopped by prude parents or the expenses from making their toys. It was developed under Sunbow/Marvel entertainment behind G.I. Joe and Transformers.
It had such an amazing story with so much depth. It was ahead of its time.
Wow so many good ones, really brings me back.
Visionaries and Ulysses 31 are by far the best entries on the list. D&D sadly hasn't aged well, I bought the boxset and ended up selling it to a mate.
