How to make a DIY DSLR Camera Slider Under $8

- Опубликовано: 25 окт 2012
- Here's a DIY DSLR Camera Slider I made for under 9 dollars with parts I picked up from the Home Depot. I got the main idea from Film Riot's idea, then tweaked it to need less tools for assembly.
Here's Film Riot's Video:
• $10 DIY Camera Slider!
Keep in mind, the footage at the end IS jumpy. But, it was taken right after I put the slider together and... it's an $8 build. I could've taken it in and warp stabilized the footage, but that really wouldn't have been an accurate representation of how the slider truly functions.
Much of it is explained in the video, but here's a parts list for those of you who are interested. Everything can be found at the Home Depot. Provided they still stock these items when you see this. :)
2 pcs - ½ inch conduit. (Cut to desired length)
4 pcs - ½ inch Electrical Metallic Tube (EMT) Set-Screw Connector. (I found 5 pack that was pretty cheap)
3 pcs - Plastic electrical outlet box. With ½ inch holes.
1 pcs - Electrical outlet box cover.
About 12 pcs of velcro, cut ¼ inch wide, ½ inch long.
1 pc - ¼ inch 20 thread count screw.

For the first time, someone actually made something simple, cheap, and easy to make! It's nice to see people commenting on how they PLAN to make something, but I looked around for comments of people who ACTUALLY made what's in a video, and this was very helpful. I'm always skeptical of DIY videos and their claims of time and money involved. This project was very accurate. I did it under an hour and for less than $9, and I'm a girl who is clueless about everything hardware. Yes, everything was at Home Depot. I had some trouble finding the right electrical boxes (luckily, he shows the number on the product), so for those of you planning on making this slider, these are the exact ones he used:
Southwire 1-Gang 12 cu. in. New Work Handy Junction Box
Model # 56915301 Internet # 205029565 Store SKU # 397507

That way you can check the inventory at your local stores before making the trip. Everything else was quite easy for me to find.
Thanks, Austin! Your video was very thorough.
this is the most cost efficient, practical, and VERY effective slider. Even this video is straight forward, like "here it is bruh". Respect to you comrade.
+blackkabnet Thank you kindly. It still get people who can't figure it out, so it's nice to see someone who has.

Lmao
I did a Google search for diy camera slider. Never expected to find such an ingenious solution on the first video that popped up in my search. Thanks for sharing and I plan on making one or more very soon.
I just bought the parts this morning and put it together. Total cost of $10. It works great! Awesome tutorial, thank you!
Awesome! Started with film riot's slider and made some modifications based on this tutorial and one other. Really happy with the final product!!!
I made this exactly. All the parts are still available at Home Depot. Mine cost a little over $10 with tax. I don't use a DSLR but instead a Cannon XHA1. It was obviously to flimsy. I made two of these sliders and laid them side by side. Then I used a board to connect the two that easily supports the weight even with a heavy wide angle lens. Came out terrific and smooth. I didn't need the velcro or rags to get a clean slide. With a little practice it's awesome.
Zack Corley It definitely does take some practice. I'm stoked you found a solution that works for you! Happy shooting!
Just made this DIY slider today. It cost me $11 because Lowes is a bit pricier and the connectors were sold in a 3-pack (so I had to buy two packs), but it works just as described by Austin.
Rad! Thanks for making this DIY a no tools necessary version. Film-riot's might be more sturdy looking, but this gets the job done! Way to go,
Perfect! I was waiting to come up with a better solution I watched that other video too and was holding off until I came up with a better solution. You nailed it. I'm excited to try this out soon! Great job!
Thanks. I really appreciate that! I'm glad it helped, and I'm hoping the build will work out great for you.
Great work bro, footage is nice :)
Dude I'm pretty sure that's the best slider system as seen on RUclips good job brother
Thanks man! I totally appreciate it!
Hey Austin, dig your version. My first slider was an Indy Mogul style. This has given me ideas for a longer better design. Thanks for posting.
I priced one the other day for 550 Euros, only one available. This one seems to do mostly the same stuff for pennies on the dollar. Thanks, dude, you really helped me out.
This has to be the best one so far. Most simple to make, cheapest, etc.
More practical and more efficient for less than $10. Thanks for making this tool more fun.
I just watched the Film Riot video and thought it was cool. but video gives me a clear and simple example that I can feel more confident making! Cant wait to use the slider!
Thanks man! I'm excited for you!
Exactly what I was hoping to find! Simple, cheap, durable, parts easy to find. Good work👍
Thank you! I'm glad it helped! :)
adding some weight with a little sand bag into the sliding box also might help to make a smoother slide.
+Sam Bernal Excellent idea!
Sam Bernal could prob just throw some weights in that empty hole right under where the cam sits. Am def gonna be trying this out will keep in touch !
Excellent variation on film riots build, gonna give this a try
Very nice brother!!! I saw the Film of Riot's before yours, and I have to say that you made a very good modification using another electric boxe that will make my job easier! Thank you my friend!!!
+Adrenalin Fight You are very welcome! Thank you for the compliment too!
Just went out, bought the supplies, and built this is about 2 and a half hours. Ended up costing me about $20 but that's still an incredible deal. Made some minor adjustments to mount a tripod head on the slider (still working to find the best way to do this). Awesome design, thanks for the video!
This looks brilliant. Can't wait to try it out myself.
Thank you so much, i was looking for a cheap and smooth camera slider, then i saw your video. I made one, a little bit longer than yours (5 ft long) hahaha, but still amazing! Brilliant idea! Velcro helps a lot, very smooth and professional (for a 8 bucks home made). Thank you again! Congrats!
You're very welcome! I hope you get some killer shots with it. :)
Ok this is sweet. Thank you for using your flexible creativity to share a great idea. I was looking for a slide mechanism for some laser effect and this is perfect, parts are easy to get, assembly does not require 3D parts, extensive drilling and machining.
electrowizard thanks for the compliment! I’m all about ease of assembly. I hope your project goes smoothly!
Hey Austin. This is an awesome build. Just came across it and it was very helpful. Thanks mate!
the smartest diy slider i've ever seen!!! congratz!
i was going to make the one as seen on film riot and had the same idea of using the velcro. thanks for posting, this seems much easier!
Very creative. Love the way you prepared the video and just got to the point. I'm a Disney Imagineer and this concept would have received some brow movers at the model shop. Thanks for sharing...
Thank you for the kind words, Jesse! I'm glad you liked the video. :)
I build Ryan's slider and never got it to work right. I think you're solution may be the answer for me. Great job!
Nice! I'm glad it could help.
This is awesome, I just bought all of the pieces today. My home depot doesnt cut pipe but i checked and Lowes does for free so ill be going there tomorrow. Every lowes cuts pipe for free, hopefully this helps anyone else who wants to do this
I went to go watch your demo.. and I couldn't get past your RUclips Trailer video. Such amazing work Jorge!!
Just wanted to let you know I decided on this build. It took about 20 minutes and works absolutely wonderfully. Thanks so much for the idea. (I went with an all metal no plastic 5 footer. Still only cost me 15 bux!!) What are people thinking buying these things for hundreds of dollars...smh..
Love this. I made one out of random pieces laying around my house and I think i might try to make this one for a smaller easier to travel with alternative. Thanks for the post.
Awesome video. Film riot is awesome but I preferred your video for sure. Great job. I can't wait to try this.
Something Bunting hey thanks a bunch. I’m glad you liked it. I’m excited for you to try yours as well. :)
Actually heading to the hardware store today to make this one. I saw his video as well, but like the simplicity of this design better myself. Great video!!!
Thank you! Let me know how it turns out. Hopefully it's only slightly more than $8 in this economy. haha
@@austinlindsay working on video now. Rendering video.
Just uploaded it on my channel and tagged your video.
Great revision to the Film Riot slider. I liked their concept with the cheap materials, but the slider base seemed like it could be made a little simpler. This is what I'm going to do, thanks for the video!
Glad this will work for you. And thanks for the feedback!
Very well made ! I was looking in youtube to find examples. Now I know that I will follow yours. I think instead of doing it with electrical boxes I will use some pieces of wood.
Thank you very much for the idea.
Thank you. I live in Japan so I will visit my local home improvement store and improvise like you have. Appreciate the inspiration. :)
I just bought all the pieces to this. Gonna build it later today 👍
Best DIY Slider I have seen. Thank You. Brilliant
Moon Landing Studios thanks a bunch! Glad you like it!
This is 100 time better then film riots. Great job dude.
Thank you for this! Definitely building it.
Cool beans! We made one this past weekend (video on my channel) cost about $15 in California at Lowes. Thanks for the awesome tutorial! Does the job that it's supposed to.
this is by far the easiest option out there - amazing idea, thank you!
VideoActive Productions Thank you very much. I'm glad you like it. :)
You're a genius man, saved me a ton of money and time! Thanks again for this!
Seems good thanks. Been trying to work out how to avoid paying out too much. Think I would want a couple of velcro straps to hold the lid on to secure the camera bit though. A home made camera stabiliser would be good? Thanks for the idea!
I made one today. Thank you so much! I drilled two small holes in the side of the middle box and ran a string through it. Pulling it by the string makes the slide much smoother.
Nice idea!
I love this version. Well done!
SUCH a great and simple idea. Thanks for sharing.
Nice work, I've been buying up parts trying to improve on Ryan's DIY rig because the rag thing isnt practical. Nice find.
Best DIY slider concept I've found. Could even spray silicone on the bars if they get gunked.
was looking for the exact idea. thanks for the parts info!
You’re very welcome!
awesome, i'm looking forward to making this! thank you for sharing! very creative.
Thank you. Lemme know how you like yours!
Congratulations. You made it very easy !! Thanks.
Any ideas on what can be used for legs?
I was planning on attaching a 2x4 or some piece of metal along the bottom to both of the ends, with a tripod screw hole in the middle. When I get around to doing it, I'll try and post another how-to video.
Do you have any ideas on what you can put on the sides so get it off the ground at about 3ft?
definitely about to make on of these next week, this is the best version i have seen so thank you, i would also say your results would probably be better if you screwed down the top plate especially with a dslr on top of that as there are some gaps there and room for play. very awesome version, ill be adding covers and soft feet to the outer boxes and mounting the hardware inside the box to make it look a little cleaner, ill lose about 3" of slide but i want a compact one for mountain biking
Awesome idea using the Velcro. Genius.
It will probably chew through the Velcro sooner or later, but the cool thing about it is that its so simple to dismantle and reassemble. If I need to change something or replace something, its not even an issue. Easy peasy. :)
Austin, did you have to expand the holes on the middle slider junction box? And if so how did you do that? I have all the correct components, but my 1/2 in. conduit doesn't fit through the holes of the middle junction box.
its crazy I found you you on Facebook today without looking and now on youtube the exact same way... Glad I found you though all the same. thanks for the tips
justin n amanda johnson I'm glad you did too. Glad I could help.
Way to go Austin! Great idea.
simple and easy, just how we want it ! thanks for sharing, thumbs up !
Glad it could help ya! :)
Thanks for the compliments! Does your bunge cord system spring back at all, or do you put one on both sides?
Did you just place this all on the grass for your test shots? Just curious if it would have been better to raise it on a couple light stands some how and get less bumpy shots.
Great video, I just ran to home depot and purchased the exact same parts except im building a 5 foot slider. However, the electrical boxes with the holes I purchased the exact same one you list in the video B112HB but the 3/4 tubing doesn't fit in the holes..
Did you sand open the hole a bit?
Very cool work bro!
Yo! you rock. I was thinking about this and you did it. Great Job! Props.
RND now to make it flashy!
Looks simple, but working! Thanks!
Great, great video, man! Thanks!
But, I have a question.
How do you make for the camera not swing to foward? My lens (18-35) is a little heavy and I have a little problem to slide the camera...
Thanks again!
Thanks, for the video and the parts list!
could you connect this to a tripod or would it be too wobbly
I too was wondering if there is anyway to mount this slider on a tripod.
So simple. love the way you think.
any ideas on how to mount it to a tripod?
I want to be able to adjust how high it is
Is it possible to mount this to a tripos? Thanks in advance!
very creative. loved it.now i will make one myself. thanks a bunch
Good Job Austin
The Camera thread size for those in the UK is BS 1/4 Whitworth
@austin What Tube Cutter Did You Use To Cut The Pipes
Thanks for sharing the Sku #. I couldn't find the right electrical box. Although I noticed that the knockout sizes for the box listed are 1/2in which naturally would be too small for 3/4in tubing!
I went to Lowes also and they didn't have the plastic electrical outlet boxes with the holes on the long side. Did you find them there?
I got all the parts in this video from Home Depot. I believe some of the images in the video have a barcode on them, but you'll have to watch again since I have not payed too much attention. Any other info you need on the about the actual parts, you'll have to contact Home Depot directly.
Inexpensive, practical, easy to replicate. Subscribed, commented, kudos to you sir.
Retro Advisory Board hey! Thanks a bunch! I’m glad you found it useful. :)
Hi Austin!
I just hook it to the plate and start pulling slow. The elastic in the cord makes it steady and smooth. Make sure you use a thin one :) Have fun and tell me if you notice a difference!
Thanks! Added a piece of polyethylene to the handle for comfort too. I also added the cover plates to the bottom of ends and attached rubber feet like Film Riot did. Now I'm trying to figure out how to make it attachable to tripods. I have 1/4" 20 count thread connecting cap nuts I've used before on my DIY iPad tripod mount. But it will stick out further than my rubber feet lol (unless I interchange cover plates based on the usage.
this is much better, so glad I found this before I ran to home depot
Really nice work Bro.
Love it! Simple, cheap, ingenious.
That is pure genius! I saw the other video and it looked like the dolly juddered.
Great video, I built mine last night. I had to use all 1/2 gauge electrical box, couldn't find 3/4 any where. For less than $9 dollars you can't beat this build, specially since I have 2 foot & 3 foot rails. I do get a lot of shake and it tends to slide around on smooth surfaces. I'd like to hear suggestions about mounting a head. Thanks again!
Andy Thanks for posting this was actually very easy to put together took me about 15 minutes.
Is there anyway to get this rig to work with a tripod?
Would it be possible to motorize this for timelapses?
ive just made a very similar one, in the uk its almost impossible to get those connectors that go to the conduit boxes, i designed mine so that nearly no tools are needed, if youve got 5 minutes would you have a look? many thanks, subscribed and looking forward to more video!
yea for sure the velcro works super. also something cool i found out is that on the metal style "wire holder" thingys there is a punch hole right in the middle. perfect for mounting a couple of cheapo thrift store tripods on each end to support it. pretty cool stuff. ;)
How could i mount this on mu tripod? Its awesomeee!
Nice idea! That sounds like an awesome addition actually.
Awesome thank you! I added a handle to mine. Punched out the back of the electrical box slider and added a 1/2 PVC elbow and a 3/4 coupling. Had to slightly widen the hole on the box to fit the coupling though.
Velcro!
I've been trying to build one of those (5') and I've been trying to use self adhesive felt which is just too stinking thick!. Thanks for the idea!
FWIW. It might be interesting to rig up some sort of way to hold a gimbal to help stabilize the cam...
I should mention, not all home depots have those junction boxes like the ones you used. I had to get the steel ones. I think all told my cost prior to paint was $12.00. 2 5' 3/4" EMT pipes, 4 3/4" EMT connectors, and 3 single gang steel boxes. I already had the cover plate, nuts / screws and paint on hand...
I'm glad you liked the Velcro idea. Also, prices and items i'm sure have changed in the 5 years since this was posted. Still a pretty cheap option, though. ;)
Hey sir Austin where can i buy a velcro?.. This is pretty easy to do. :)
I love it
Just built mine and it came out great. Thanks!!!!
EyedealVision215 So good to hear! I hope you create some awesome videos with it!
