    I tried doing the same, and for 80% the iPad did just fine with the Magic Keyboard. But then there were random moments when doing productivity such as it couldn’t run a simple page of my insurance online driving course renewal but my brothers $200 laptop ran it easily. So that’s when I made up my mind and bought my MacBook Air m1 and till this day no regrets.

    This was an excellent video about how, you use your iPad. As for myself, I always buy the basic iPad model with max specifications. So, my current version is a basic iPad 9th generation with 256GB and the cell data option paired, with a Logitech Combo Keyboard and of course Apple's 1st generation pencil. Prior to the Covid-19 virus, I did zero office work on my iPad. However, during the many months working three to four days per week from home this changed and my iPad became a life saver, I used the following: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom, Webex Meet, Tele-health, and Photos. Today, while my primary system is an Apple desktop computer the iPad fits nicely between my Android smart phone and my desktop computer (smile...smile).

    I bought an iPad mini 6 after a lifetime of using android phones and PCs. I think because of the size and the fact it stands out as my only apple product, it’s very clearly filling the role you’re describing. It’s definitely not capable of performing most of my school tasks as I use statistical softwares and the interface of a PC is just preferable to what I do, but it’s fantastic for being a portable tool for note taking, taking online meetings, reading, word processing in the go, and web browsing. I think advertising the larger iPad as a desktop/laptop replacement is a weird move. It’s definitely supplemental, but not a replacement.

    As a prof, I use my 12.9-inch M1 pro to deliver lectures with, and to work out math derivations to support my research and such. I also use it in my nature photography hobby quite a bit to view my edits. I will retire this year and must surrender my iPad back to someone at work (not sure who since no one but me probably even knows about it, but still) and will need to replace it. I had been thinking I’d get the 11-inch M4, but after
    listening to your video I realized that my new M4 iPad will be my hobby computer and I am quite serious about my
    hobby. This, since I will use it mainly to inspect my photos, i will get the 13-inch rather than the 11-inch because the 13-inch has an aspect ratio that better shows my images than does the 11-inch model. Thanks for your thoughts on how you see your iPad and its role.

    I use my iPad exactly the way you do; it's a casual computer. In fact, this was Steve Jobs' original vision for the iPad. I bought my first iPad when they came out fourteen years ago when they first came out, and I've used it mostly the same way ever since. But when I need to get heavier work done, I always go back to my Mac. Your video Your video explains this very well.

    I have been an Apple user for the past 40 years but used my Mac’s as my after work computer, my break from work, for work was in the windows world. Now that I am retired I use mainly my iPad Pro for just about everything, but still need my MacBook for stacking and initial processing of my astrophotography data. I am still holding out hope that eventually iPadOS will gain background processing and features that will allow me to retire our MackBook. I use an iPad mini 6 with cellular mostly, I enjoy the mobility, it’s small, light and capable. I was hoping that the iPad would the evolution of the laptop and even desktop computer, and I still think it can be for some people. Maybe someday Apple will make iPadOS more robust, and the laptop just a memory of days gone by.

    Thanks for the video. I don't think anyone ever inteded the Ipad to be a Mac "replacement". Rather an alternative... to be fair. Your arguments for your use cases are 100% valid. The argument for the iPad as an alternative to a Laptop is also 100% valid in other use cases. My use case: Browsing, Mails, Spreadsheets, Keynote. That's the main dish I'm cooking up. The side-dishes are all kinds of other dedicated Apps which sometimes I find better than doing it all in Browsers on a Mactop. I have been using the iPad Air 5 with Magic Keyboard for about a year and a half as my only "Computer". And I'm doing fine. I love the Mac too - and my Macbook/Air will never be parted with :-)

    Ever since I graduated from school, it’s hard to find a good use care for my iPad Pro 11in. When I do use it, it’s to watch fitness plus workouts where I’m able to set the tablet on the treadmill. Other times it’s great for online shopping and just general Safari browsing. I’ve really tried to force myself to use it for everything, but just like you, it’s only filled a few niche areas, where my iPhone, Mac, and AppleTV can handle most other things. I’m considering selling my iPad Pro and instead getting an iPad mini which I think would be perfect for carrying around. Even the 11inch iPad just feels too heavy to carry around with a case and Apple Pencil attached to it.

    Just to add, I’ve used an iPad since the first iteration and settled on it being a tool for research, study and planning.
    I have long upgrade cycles as I don’t need much power for that but it’s useful for language learning (apps / book reading / flash cards / RUclips videos) and sketching out thoughts.
    Study is also useful (courses) whilst I use my computer at the same time. Obviously photo editing too.
    I was deep in the Mac ecosystem but now I use iPad for creativity / study. Mediocre windows for my boring workflow (analysis / spreadsheets). Comes in at a reasonable cost also.

    Great explanation, hobby computer fits great as the name for it.
    Of course I disagree that the iPad cannot be used for creating, and shortsighted view that it's for consumption is really tiresome. But I'm not surprised many see it that way - in your case you cannot code on it, and that is your creativity outlet as well.
    But you can edit photos, make drawings, sketches, you can easily create and play music on it. I use it for all that, though music more casually for now. On top of that I use it to organize my hobbies, running a guild, handling D&D session stuff, controlling the Discord server and other neat small things that come together nicely in one package I can take anywhere.
    I use my windows pc mainly, I have a laptop for work, Steam Deck for some random mobile gaming, and yeah, iPad is the perfect hobby computer for my use case, and for many others.

    The iPad experience becomes so much better for people who also own a Mac when they stop convincing themselves to try and use it as a computer replacement.
    iPadOS is intentionally limited whether we like it or not simply not to strike competition with the Mac and this has been Apple's obvious stance for a lot of years now. iPadOS deviating from iOS was simply a marketing rebrand and I learned not to expect much from every WWDC keynote since I will just set myself up for disappointment.
    It's also one of the main reasons why I truly believe the iPad mini is the last "real" iPad because it's not being marketed as a PC replacement to save everyone else from the potential frustrations.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I love the iPad for editing photos as well. However, one thing I have trouble with is photo file management. I’d love to see a video about your process from importing photos you’ve taken, to editing them on your iPad, to exporting. Where do you store your raw files (or jpgs)? Cloud storage? On your iPad? Sync with Lightroom on your Mac? Etc. etc. Not sure if that’s the type of content you want to put on your channel or not though. Anyway, love your videos, keep them coming man!

    • @shawn.hickman
      @shawn.hickman  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching! I'm down for doing any kind of video about photography. I use Lightroom and Adobe's cloud storage for all my raw files. I used to use Lightroom Classic but I found it a little tedious to sync across devices. So I'll either import my raw files to Lightroom on the iPad or Mac and then have them sync across devices. After editing I'll export jpgs from Lightroom and put them in Apple Photos. The only raw images I have in Apple Photos are ones I've taken with my iPhone.

    I’ve an iCrap Air 5th Gen and at best it’s an okay-ish device, at best, and only for consuming information, not producing it: the sensor to unlock the iCrap using your fingerprint works erratically (my sister has a 4th Gen Air and it’s the same with hers); transferring files out of this crap of device - documents, audio/video, pictures - is a NIGHTMARE if the target device is not part of the walled garden universe, and the keyboard auto-complete functionality goes crazy when you type in two different languages like I’m doing here in English and then in my native language when chatting with the fam - pfff, so much for such and “advanced device”. That is mostly what it is right now but they have a super expensive amazing pro model so that’s where it gets confusing. We will see this year if Apple actually makes the iPad more of a pro device or keeps it stuck in the hobby land which it excels at. Just the marketing leads people to be frustrated with it. It seems like the iPad Pro is really pro for pro Apple fanboy and not really a pro device. : ) (I know for certain tasks perhaps it is a true pro device).

    Ipad prototype predated the iphone, right? It was meant to be a reboot of the "personal computer". I think ipados is stuck at "how do we make it as useful as a traditional OS without making it as painful?". The consumption tasks were easy. Progress was made with productivity, but huge barriers remain. Real file managememt was anathema to iOS's reboot, but individual app silos isnt good enough. Steps have been made with file management and background tasks and interapp communication.,, but how do you go all the way without turning it back into Unix?

    • @jasonjayalap
      @jasonjayalap 6 месяцев назад

      Personally, phone = walkable (alerts, comms, audio); tablet = lean back; laptop/desktop = lean forward and "all the things that should just work but don't". My "should be lean forward but works on tablet" activity is music production apps. If we had to live with one device, it's the laptop, of course. But I'm glad we don't.

    • @shawn.hickman
      @shawn.hickman  6 месяцев назад

      Yea it's a different design & technical challenge for sure. The app silos bring so much simplicity to the UX, but can frustrate the more advanced user with the lack of control. There are times I love it and other times it drive me nuts lol. Like you mentioned, I don't see them going in the full Unix direction.
