Designer and developer, who makes the app Sofa. I make videos about design, development, and running an indie app business.
Sofa is your next favorite podcast player
During the summer and fall, I’ve been hard at work on a big new feature for Sofa…the ability to listen to Podcasts in the app.
I’ve actually been using it as my primary podcast player for the past month, and I love it.
In this video I’m going to give a little preview of how it’s going to work, and I’ll share some details about why I’m making it and when it’s coming out.

Tips for Designing Better Drop Shadows in Figma for Developers & Designers
This is a really interesting direction! I'm excited for it, and I like the idea of the easy logging to my logbook, but I'm also afraid of flooding that logbook with so many podcast episodes that I can't see my other uses of downtime (sometimes 3-5 episodes per day). Is there any chance you could include an "exclude podcast episodes" filter on the logbook? Right now, as far as I can tell, it is only possible to limit to a single medium, whereas I would be interested in seeing all mediums except Podcast episodes.
I have a setting that will allow you to control if Podcast Episodes go to the Logbook when completed. You can see the "When Finished" setting around the 6:23 mark
@@shawn.hickman Thanks for your response! I saw that part of the video-I was moreso wondering if I could have my cake and eat it, too, where those listens could be logged but I could hide them at a later time.
I did not know about your app before. Just downloaded it and will give it a try.
Thanks for giving it a try!
Love this! I’ve become a bit of a power user of Sofa recently and it’s had a big impact on my life. This seems like a fantastic next step! Great work
It's so nice to hear that!

Me waiting for the beta
This is big. Congrats. Just started the video, so you might answer it for me, but does it autopay the next pod in the Up Next feature?
Thanks dude, and yes, the podcast player will automatically start playing the next episode in the Up Next list depending on it's sort order
@ time to get to work and build out a new section in sofa
Default Apple's Podcasts app is great. I use only third-party players for my self-hosted stuff, like Audiobookshelf. I'm eager to try your implementation 👀
I'll be eager to hear your feedback!
so excited for this feature! also happy to see easy import via OPML files, but wondering if it can do apple podcasts import as well as most podcasts app i use can do that. also; will the up next feature support other media? i have big lists of things to watch/read/play, but i'd love to tell the app that a given game or movie or book is next in my person queue
Yes, OPML import will be there! Right now, Up Next will only be for podcast episodes, but I have other ideas planned for what you're talking about.
A couple questions... Is there a way to migrate easily from Apple Podcasts? I subscribe to 250+ pods, and would not be able to move those over manually. Also would your app support that many feeds without taking forever to refresh the queue?
As long as you can get a OPML file export from Apple Podcasts then you can import it in Sofa. In regards to 250+ pods, the initial import and sync make take a bit, but the ongoing sync should be fine. I'll be doing much more stress testing during the beta period. Question, do you actively listen to that many podcasts?
@@shawn.hickman Not all of them actively post regularly. I screen every episode that comes into my feed, but probably actually listen to ~25% of episodes. Always on 2-3x speed.
@@PeterNooteboom Good to know. If you're comfortable with it, it be great to have you on the beta to test out a large volume. No worries if not though.
This is such a nice video man, thank you for telling us about your experience, very hearfelt video, love it. You mentioned you started with the III then went to the X then back to the III, obviously everyone has this dilemma. I also cant decide which one to buy. You ended up being a 28mm guy then?
Thanks so much! 28 vs 40 is sooooo hard, but here's where I've landed for now... With 40mm I think the photos are more beautiful, with 28mm the photos are more fun and memorable. I prefer the 28.
Hi Shawn, thank you very much for the lesson. I learned a lot. You showed how to bring attention to the object and at the same time how not to overdo it🙏👍
Glad you found it helpful!
Any chance you have a template for Businesses for Freelancer/self-employed?
I have some spreadsheets I use for myself, but they're not really template-ready right now. Anything specific you'd like it to do?
@ I was looking to track my inventory, COGS, profit and loss. Also with Shopify being able to track my shipping fees and taxes. I threw a lot at you but looking to use Apple numbers or excel for it. But open more in using Apple numbers. Do you have a spreadsheet to track subscriptions? That calculates the monthly amount and total I spent for the year?
@@jckv.digital I personally use two spreadsheets to track/run my business. First is the general financial info where I'm tracking transactions, P&L, budgeting, etc. The second is specific to my app Sofa. I track sales, subscriptions, and more. I use both of these heavily, but they aren't template-ready at this point. I need to put some time aside to put them together. Hopefully in the near future.
I can totally relate to your story!! I’m very self conscious and somewhat shy especially when taking pictures! But I’m bound and determined to learn and take better photos!
The GR is a great tool for people like us :)
Thanks for being honest and helping us keep our feet on the ground. I have also been secretly lusting on a Q3 but locally we don’t have an option to rent cameras. I work with Nikon Z9’s and then use an old Nikon D810 for street and travel photography with an old manual focus 35mm Ai f/2.8 lens. It’s light enough, not too bulky but is so ergonomically perfect in my hands. I debated with myself on getting this new Zf but when you try using it with light lenses there is nothing yet that feels good enough for it. Adapting old lenses with an adapter isn’t my thing as again, things become un-ergonomic with the lens extending out because of the adapter. The Zf has the same issues as the Leicas imo, it looks great but doesn’t feel great in my hands. It’s hard to hold and handle. To me at least. So we’re in the same boat.
Thanks for sharing! I haven't held a Zf yet, but I've seen a lot of people add grips which seems like it helps.
Hey, love the video but i wanna do the same thing in the where the background/design in in dark mode. should i use another black shade or white as the drop shadow color?
You could try a shade of grey
Please do an editing tutorial!! Amazing color grading
Thanks! I actually use a handful of presets because I'm still learning how to improve my editing. Here are some I've used and enjoy: - RNI (Really Nice Images) - Mastin Labs (Portra Original) - Very Good Presets (Portra 800)
🔥🔥🔥
👏👏👏
Thanks for your interesting perspectives. For me, the Ricoh has a slightly different effect - it's quite simple: when I want to be out with a 'photographer's eye,' I take it with me. When I have that 'eye,' I look at the world differently, and sometimes I want that, and sometimes I don’t. With the Ricoh, I no longer think, 'I want to see the world like a photographer but don't feel like carrying a camera,' because it really fits in any jacket pocket. So, I take it with me much more often, and as a result, I find myself viewing the world from that perspective much more frequently - and this make me a better photographer.
That's a great way to put it, thanks for sharing
Hi Shawn, like your channel a lot thanks for sharing all of your lessons learned. I'm designer too which wants to get into development. Do you have any video on your dev learning journey? Are there any resources you would recommend to learn iOS development?
I wrote this back in 2017 that might be helpful: www.poohbers.com/2017/12/how-a-designer-built-and-shipped-an-ios-app-in-6-months/
What I want to know is how to use sofa. I installed it on linux and I dont know how to invoke it. Maybe this is a different sofa.
That sounds like a different Sofa. My app only runs on iOS and the Mac
Curious to know if you think Sony has good ergonomics…because they don’t.
Ergonomics are so personal and subjective. For me, I really enjoy the ergonomics of the Sony A7IV & A7RV. They fit my hand very well. On the flip side, I've tried the A7C II and really didn't enjoy the ergos. Doesn't make it a bad camera, just not for me.
This is a godsend!😅 I’ve been looking for a job for like 1.5 years now. (I got 8 years of experience, wtf) Yesterday i decided to just upload some bullshit apps with subscriptions and learn about driving traffic to them on the go. Thank you, this was very therapeutic

My Ricoh Gr iiix arrives tomorrow and I'm hoping it will solve my shyness! Been shooting with an x-pro for years now and have missed countless shots because I didn't want to get in people's faces. Also real photography RUclips nerds will spot James Popsys at 5:11 😅

Do you worry about competition?
I keep an eye on competition, but I try not to let it distract me.
I purchased your budget spreadsheet yesterday! Worth every penny! I am really impressed by how clean and professional this is. I also love the summary page. It was an eye opener of where I am at financially (not great lol). -The only thing I changed was how the yearly total income was calculated. You have it set based on 26 paychecks. This makes perfect sense since we all get 26 bi-weekly paychecks per year. However, I decided to go off of 24 checks instead. That way I have a better idea of how much money I actually have left at the end of each month. The 2 months where I get extra I will just simply put that into my savings!- Once again I greatly appreciate you making this budget. I can’t wait to see where I am at next year financially! 💰 Edit: Changed my mind on the 24 checks. Just keep it as it is with 26 lol
I'm so happy to hear this! Really glad you're finding it helpful! Best of luck to you👍
@@shawn.hickman Hey Shawn! Have you made a month to month budget template update by chance? I'd be more than happy to purchase!

I am from Bangladesh...I want to learn professionally...can you give me a suggestion. Thank you
I'd recommend starting with www.hackingwithswift.com
This is a great review, thanks. I am a Sony A7rII shooter, all manual with Voigtlander lenses, and I am having great fun. Earlier this year, I picked up the Fugi x100v (bought used after the crazy prices dropped when they released the x100vi). I think you should rent that one and do the same kind of review! I would watch for sure.
I've never used a Fuji before, but sounds like it'd be fun.
I'm building my first site in Framer and I built my last site Elementor. I like both systems, but I'm hoping Framer speeds up custom design and integration from Figma. As a designer I really enjoy Framers design system. I wish Wordpress would do more effort to modernize.
I hope so too!
hey Sean, would you mind telling me which APIs you're using for fetching data for Sofa? I'm particularly interested in APIs for books, movies, and video games
Sure thing! • The Movie DB - Movies and TV Shows • iTunes Search API - Books, Podcasts, Apps, and Music • IGDB - Video Games
@@shawn.hickman thank you! I'm curious about the iTunes Search API; I wanted to use it but I cannot find any resources...There's only a "Documentation archive" Apple page that has very scarce info about the API, and the very few examples that are shown are music-related... Do you need to be in the Apple Affiliate Program (or whatever they call it) in order to have full access to this API?

OMG, by the 30-minute mark, I started catching myself thinking that I occasionally see Ryan Reynolds in the frame while watching the video closely! :)

what about ASO and Motivated traffic like 25%
I appreciated hearing your insightful thoughts on the camera. I think my Sony A7CR is my Leica! Along with some Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses. Very happy with that setup but the Leica hype is real!
The A7Cr and some primes is an amazing combo. Enjoy and thanks for watching!
I have the Q2 it needs the grip & thumb rest to complete the ergonomic connection, after which it feels like an extension of your hand. The Ricoh GR has no ergonomic connection yet you love it? Sony cameras have incredible AF with a convoluted menu system which makes for a horrible experience..So true the images a person gets is directly proportional to an individuals talent and skill set. The camera doesn't take better photos the photographer does. What's the process of your Sony taking it from AF to manual? you have to take the camera away from your eye correct? go into the menu etc.. you like that better? You have to hold the Ricoh GR with one hand there is no viewfinder it's the only way to use the camera. Your not an idiot, it was smart to rent one in the first place
> I have the Q2 it needs the grip & thumb rest to complete the ergonomic connection, after which it feels like an extension of your hand. I've heard this from multiple people, but I personally didn't get to experience it. It is a bummer you have to buy extra things to make the ergos better though. > The Ricoh GR has no ergonomic connection yet you love it? I've found the GR to be really great in the hand. It is surprising based on how it looks, but the size/weight combined with the small grip and button layout make it very enjoyable to use for me. > What's the process of your Sony taking it from AF to manual? you have to take the camera away from your eye correct? go into the menu etc.. you like that better? I have a custom button set up to allow me to jump into manual focus without taking my eye off the VF. Works pretty well! > You have to hold the Ricoh GR with one hand there is no viewfinder it's the only way to use the camera. There are pros and cons to this, but I knew what I was getting into with the GR so no VF is ok most of the time. Thanks for watching!
@@shawn.hickman Leica does require accessories to make the camera ergonomic but if possible try the Q2 with the grip and thumb rest you'll love it I have gotten use to using the Q2 from AF to Manuel once you do it a while its second nature I think I feel the same way about Sony as you do with Leica the menu system is written by engineers very convoluted way more than what's needed for artistic photography I just to care for it. Ricoh GR is a nice pocket camera so different from the Q2 Nice thing about Leica is they hold their value my Q2 is worth about 4 K after five years of use.

A lot of complaints about one of the best cameras money can buy. If you owned the camera, you could buy a couple of accessories which would change the whole ergonomics experience in a second.
I'd rather not have to spend an additional couple hundred dollars to improve the ergonomics of a $5-6k camera
