If i remember correctly theres a little cut-out on the knife close to the "grip", and i believe thats for striking the ferro rod

There's only a spot on top of the knife at the tip that is flat but the knife seems to bend when putting pressure unto the ferro rod but it only produces light spark and you need heavy sparks thrown. But you can use the blade of the hatchet I just dont like that thats why I replaced the the hatchets ferro rod for a better one.

The notch for the ferro rod is at the base of the blade next to the handle. It’s small- same size as the ferro rod. It works well.

Looks like the top of the hatchet has a 90 degree spine for the ferro rod.

Is there any space where the knife goes to stash fire starting materials

You could put some cotton balls or a very small amount of steel wool. But you'll have to pull it out with maybe sewing string something small in that effect. Hope that helps.

Man you are not sitting in the most balanced position yet putting your left hand at the risk of hatchet blade.

Has anyone ever seen a ferro rod damage a decent blade ?

It might not damage the blade but it would dull it to a certain point and if you relied on the hatchet only you dont want to take the chance. Just to say.

@@CampfireAdventuresAndgear - I guess you're right , I should worry so much about the precious edge on my tools that I cannot allow them to fulfill their life's purpose of serving the owner . Things like that are such a problem to re-hone ,I may just use a Bic lighter instead.

The lighter in my opinion is the best tool of all. It starts 🔥 you need it for smokes and you can use it to pop off beer caps so its really a multi tool in its own right as long as its a bic lighter lol

After looking at the ferro rod with the built in whistle the total length is 2 inches. You can use it the ferro rod but you can only Ignite it by using the hatchets blade due to the type of metal the hatchet is made of. In all due respect that is why I went with a bigger and larger ferro rod with a striker and paracord attached. The ferro rod in my opinion is just to small and does not produce a lot of spark and its easier to lose since its too small and constantly falls out of its holder. Hope this information helps but the hatchet itself is really nice and great for the price!
