    Qué alegría ver proyectores que aún apuestan por el 3d y que han desarrollado el uso de los speakers nativos dentro de la configuración de los home theaters. Excelente reportaje. Saludos.

    It seems to be bad year for projectors market in terms of development. How long we have to wait for UST projectors with native contrast of 5000:1, native 4K and reasonable price? There is some magical black hole between DLP and LCoS waiting to be filled! Texas Instruments could get down to business.
    It's good that at least a floor-rising fresnel was presented, that's something.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  6 месяцев назад +6

      I predict 10+ years before we see native 4K at a reasonable price. There isn't even a 4K DLP currently available, there is one rumored to exist that is 0.94" from TI, but it will only be used for 8k pixel shifters and will probably cost $1000+ just for the chip itself wholesale.
      I think your expectations are slightly unreasonable, those things don't even exist in the traditional projector market at a reasonable price, and you want them in UST?

    • @skankhunt420
      @skankhunt420 6 месяцев назад

      Your expectations are absolutely unreasonable, you're insane!
      How are affordable devices supposed to reach a 5000:1 contrast ratio, while we see, that 2000:1 is already a gamechanger within lifestyle projectors.
      Buy a fkn TV... 🤦🏻‍♂️

I've been on the market for a compact, portable projector and wanted to see if Nebula, Formovie, or Wemax were updating their models are CES before making a decision. Thanks for the clarification. You're right, the video mentioned 1200 ANSI Lumens and I got confused after reading on their website 1200 ISO Lumens! Shame about the battery, as I was looking for an all in 1 travel solution like the wemax advanced or nebula capsule but was hoping someone would get out a compact, battery powered model with wemax's brightness and capsule-like or S5-like integrated sound

    Rob,
    Hope you had a great time at the show. Those projectors look very promising.
    First impressions:
    1. Did you visually notice any improvement on the contrast on the XGIMI projectors especially the Ultra-X5.
    2. Any improved picture quality in the Dangbei units using ALDP 5.0 technology.
    3. Any feed back from Hisense or Formovie for why they dont include 3D mode.
    Can wait for this years breakdowns!

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  6 месяцев назад +3

      The new XGIMI Horizon Max had MUCH better contrast and black levels than the Horizon Ultra. Dangbei X5 and Nexigo TriVision UItra (ALPD 5.0) had much lower contrast, and worse black levels, but I know that Nexigo is actively working on that issue from a software/firmware side before release.
      As for 3D, yes I asked about it. It seems like the 2 main issues are 1) extra cost, which is probably equivalent to around $50 in parts/processing 2) certification issues with androidTV devices, and we should see that issue go away with googleTV which is supposed to more easily support 3D.

      @@TheHookUp Oops. I just noticed from your response that I mixed the names up. But you picked up on my goof. That Horizon Max looks like a winner ,although I dont care much for the choice of the retro look. Looks like XGIMI improved upon the MCL triple laser speckle issues ,where JMGO stumbled, by combining triple LED with their Dual Light 2.0 design. Very exciting. Must have been a thrill for you to have seen it up close. Thanks so much for the inquiries on the 3D. Looking forward to this years reviews. Thanks Buddy!

      Rob, Your reviews are excellent. I am on the projector merry go round right now. My Optoma had terrible flicker issues so I bought the Horizon Pro. It arrived in used condition and will not integrate with my Harmony remote. Black levels were average. Returned to Amazon
      .Ordered the BenQ 2060 but it is way too loud and zoom range wasn’t good enough for my room. Better black levels though. Returned to Amazon. I’ve just ordered the Horizon 1080P which will probably have to do for now, because I don’t know of any current projectors that are quiet enough with good enough image quality for my room, other than the XGIMI….thoughts? looking forward to your upcoming reviews!

    I use an older Optoma model that is ceiling mounted (UHD550x). I miss the contrast of new oled or mini led screens. Not only do the highlights not 'pop' as much the black levels on this particular Optoma projector aren't that amazing. Is there a projector out there that doesn't cost 5k that is a meaningful upgrade? Maybe there is something on the used market to look out for when new products release and the wealthiest of us replace their last gen equipment...
    Edit: before I first noticed your channel I watched a few recommended videos by big tech RUclipsrs about the Xgimi Horizon Ultra. I was totally convinced that this is the best projector to buy under 2k. Now that I watched a few of your videos I am not so sure. I don't need a small form factor but the Hisense c1 looks like one lf the best projectors out there. I still don't know if a 'full sized' ceiling mounted one yields any meaningful improvement over the c1. Since I am watching at 135" gain 1.0 it's not an easy task for a projector I suppose.

    • @TheHookUp

      In my personal opinion there is zero reason to buy a Formovie theater right now. The Nexigo Aurora Pro is an upgraded Formovie Theater with the same light engine, and same lens, but an upgraded chip that allows for dynamic black mode... and the Nexigo costs $200 less: amzn.to/3UlvdRc
      That said, choosing between a traditional throw and ust projector is a much more clear cut choice. If you are planning on using a UST specific ALR screen then a UST like the Nexigo or Formovie will outperform the 4550i, but if you are planning on a white screen, a non tensioned screen, or projecting onto a wall the 4550i is the way to go.

      LED video walls are still over $50,000 from all I have heard for any sort of quality. The single panel micro LED TCL television, at 115" diagonal will be price competitive and looks quite good from the Linus Tech Tips video about it. Maybe under $10,000. Not affordable, but compared to LED video walls, it's pretty significant.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah, for people who are currently using fixed frame screens the new TCL TVs are going to be pretty tough to beat. I personally use mostly dropdown/floor rising screens, so a TV or video wall isn't competitive. As far as LED video walls replacing TVs, the key is you need to sit pretty far away from them since their pixel density is still very bad compared to a TV or projector.

    That floor-rising Fresnel system is really neat, but with young kids (and accident-prone adults), I think I'll stick to traditional ceiling-mount projection and drop-down screens. Just curious - are there any projectors that have ad-free user interfaces? Google/Android TV could have been the chose one, but they have ruined the experience by injecting so many ads, many of which are inappropriate for (my) kids. Even the Nvidia Shield updates betrayed me.

    I very much appreciate your inquiring about the 3D mode information. Did I correctly gather from your response and the information in this video that, you were told by XGIMI (or whomever) that the new crop of projectors like the Horizon Max which contain Google TV as its controlling OS , will handle the processing of 3D streaming rather than relying on a proprietary 3D processing implementation by the projector manufacturer?
    FYI: If that's the case, With respect to the feedback that you were given by XGIMI (or whomever) , my curiosity about this OS facility lead me to contact Google support for more information. They claim no such facility exists to support 3D stream processing thru their GoogleTV OS i.e joining the top/bottom , side-by-side streamed images.

    What sort of HDR performance does a high end cinema get and what would it cost to replicate that at home on a 120" screen? Would it even get close to HDR from a good TV?

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  4 месяца назад

      That's kind of a loaded question. HDR can mean a lot of things.
      1) If you mean color space coverage, tri-laser projectors have wider color space coverage than TVs and can often exceed 100% of the DCI-P3 color space.
      2) If you mean peak brightness, a projector is almost always going to have less peak brightness than a TV. For HDR content, some is mastered with a peak brightness of 1000nits, so a projector isn't going to get close to that, but in a dark room (like a projector is designed for), your eyes will adjust and HDR content can be successfully tone mapped onto a ~150-200nit screen. Most movie theater screens are around 50 nits.
      A 120" TV is massive and would likely have huge issues with brightness uniformity that you wouldn't have with a projector. $5000 is a reasonable spend to get a 120" projector and screen with a movie theater like performance, but you could certainly spend in the $30-40k range for the highest end equipment.

    Big mini LEd TV of110 inches will take a big market share over projector in a very few years

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  6 месяцев назад +1

      I agree, but there are three reasons projectors will still exist and have a decent market share:
      1) Floor rising/drop down screens: 110" is huge, so dedicating wall space to a screen that large even when the TV is off is not desirable for everyone. People who are currently using fixed frame projector screens may prefer a TV though.
      2) Eye fatigue: If you've ever watched a large 85"+ TV for more than a couple hours, the bright emissive display can cause eye fatigue, a projector's reflective light is much easier to watch for longer periods of time.
      3) Cinematic effect: Home theater enthusiasts generally prefer the more cinematic feel of a projector over a large scale TV.

The most common types are lenticular ALR which rejects light coming from the opposite vertical angle of the projector and fresnel which reject light that doesn't originate from the bottom middle of the screen.
