10,000 days is a Justin Chancellor opus. He’s obviously incredible in the other albums but I dunno what got into him on this one; to me he’s the star of 10,000 days.
I agree with this in most cases, but part of the reason I fell in love with Tool was how prominent the bass came through in the mix. Leo's cover's are great of course but you can hear the bass plenty fine in Tool songs
Best choice! Keep at it, everyone ;-) Also...Man, that riff makes me moist every time; even after TWELVE years! And I am a little proud to say, that I ALMOST got the darn polyrhythm down^^
Disposition was the TOOL song that made me pick up bass, but this song is what made me love it (and hate it, until i got most of it down). I constantly pick my bass up and play along, it's just a massive groove that i can't keep myself from playing it...
6:54 that right there is the reason I fell so madly in love with Tool 20 years ago, and still to this day. Remove the rhythm and it’s the simplest thing to play, even beginner level. But the rhythm is what makes it complex. Adam never jerks himself off shredding solos, his solos are sometimes like 2-3 notes and that’s all he needs to make you drop to your knees in utter awe, Justin’s bass lines adding that extra layer to the polymetric vortex to the 13th dimension that Tool’s music pries open.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position Such a heavy burden now to be the one Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending To write it down for all the world to see But I forgot my pen Shid and fard came the bed again
I play guitar for 20 years but got a bass a couple of weeks ago and challenged myself to play Tool songs that I already know on guitar and record. It’s mind blowing when the riffs start prior to the actual new section so when the new section comes bass, guitar and drums resolve beautifully. I noticed this happening a lot with Porcupine Tree as well. Amazing cover!
You're the only one who gets the part from 1:42 right. I was in the second row at a show this year right in front of Justin and I can confirm that is how he plays it. Great ears, my man. I would've never guessed it
9:30-10:10 is the final section I have left to learn but that turnaround of the melody part is kicking my ASS. That separate practice video you made really helped me nail the polyrhythm at 6:54. Thank you as always Leo.
@@LeoBassCovers2 it’s between this and Wings For Marie/10,000 Days…I never made it past the first few riffs on those two because my right hand simply cannot keep up like that using fingies. Entirely different monster though. Edit: upon further inspection, the first part, while it does have wild timing, does seem to be within my wheelhouse. I think I just thought about part 2 because you uploaded it long before part 1. Maybe I’ll finally try to tackle those next~
@@LeoBassCovers2 I honestly can’t say I blame you. Seems the boys feel the same way. It’s kind of a shame really, it’s some of Justin’s best work, and I’d kill to witness it live, but just like H. I think they’ve retired them for sentimental reasons. Maybe one day.
8:55 The bass really owns the emotional arc of the song’s climax, sweeping through grandiose arpeggios at “Overwhelmed as one could be…” … only to slide high, kicking the bottom end out of the music at “But I forgot my pen.” That slide is over so fast, but such a crucial addition to the song
I'd like to say kudos. You kill it every video. Would like to also thank you for not being fake like most of the most "popular" guitar covers/playthroughs for the songs on this album. I have avoided commenting on them but it bugs me to see people so impressed by them when they are clearly faked (sped up) and you are legitimately playing everything note by note with the right techniques...at the original speed. You rock dude, and thanks for making learning these songs so much more feasible!
Thank you so much man! I do want to say one thing though, I do hope you realize that the video is just playback. I mean, you can see that the bass isn't even plugged in. I am playing it yes, but the audio is from a different recording so that there's no mistakes.
@@Saeedd01 so, in next year in February will be date when I start play bass and it would be my first year of playing bass! Actually, this song not to hard
Fantastic cover as usual! I’ve learned to play more songs watching your channel than any other, and I’m grateful for that. Also, it’s nuts to see the intricacies of Justin’s musical creations, made visible by these tabs. Thanks again, man! ✌🏼
Thank you! I'm not sure how else to explain that though. I don't know much about music theory and I suck at teaching so... try to just play along with it on 25% speed to get it right until it gets into your head.
If you still haven't gotten it quite right yet, I recommend to not slow down the video -yet-. You should replay the part over and over again and try to drum with your hand the beat, like getting all of the rhythms together, in the bass and drum polyrhythm ( 6:54) there's at least six different patterns, so try to drum them with your hand first and when you kind of get it, try to play it on bass with all the right notes, it's pretty easy, just fifth fret on the fourth string and the accents are the rest. Hope this helps after three months of waiting
Well, this may be disappearing soon, which is really depressing. I've already got all your Tool and Opeth covers downloaded from when you switched, but it feels right to listen to it here, and the Coversolutions ones I didn't save, so those are just... gone. Fuck Sony. And you know what? If Tool are on board with this, fuck them too. I'm debating whether to even listen to the new album at all.
I really do not know what to think at the moment. They're my favourite band, but they really screwed so many bassists here... Glad you downloaded them though.
I was just wondering...do you have any bass pick preferences/recommendations? I started playing bass using the picks I play guitar with, Jazz 3s, and I moved up to the big triangular picks that work great for slower songs/parts that aren’t so chuggy, but when i try to play quicker things, it always wants to slip and move out of my fingers. Any input is appreciated
It's funny cause I also use Jazz 3's for bass. Especially for very fast strumming. But I typically use one of those green Dunlop Tortex 0.88 picks. I like how sharp they are.
