It’s not that uncommon for 15/16 year olds to be playing challengers, although it’s not an every day occurrence. FAA played his first at 14, and young and upcoming players like Debru or Fonseca were 15 too. Carlos first came into the spotlight when he beat seasoned challenger veteran Gaio on the Futures tour at age 14, he was already on the radar and ATP ranked as a 15 year old. There are quite a few ATP ranked 15/16 year olds out there, like Darwin Blanch, Fonseca, Bogaard, Dedura Palomero or Engel for instance, so it’s not that weird to give them wild cards for challengers after taking their first steps on the futures tour. Martin Landaluce even played a main draw ATP match last year in Gijon, without even having an ATP ranking, based on his junior US open win a month earlier, it’s always been that way that the most promising youngsters get wild cards and can skip a lot of the hard grind on the futures tour, provided they are good enough, that’s the benefit of being very good at a young age
obviously so, most futures tournaments are a shitshow with terrible conditions but when you're good enough at a young age and your club is hosting a challenger event, you can get a WC. Strange how this is considered so unique in ATP, while there are dozens of players who have made it as a regular on the WTA main tour already at nearly the same age.
Men usually develop later, a 15/16 year old girl is not necessarily much weaker, slower or less athletic than a woman in her 20s, whereas boys aged 15/16 still have a long way to go physically and athletically till they can compete with the pros, that’s why it’s very rare to have male players this young that are already this competitive
It's not really strange when you consider that most 15-16 year old boys are nowhere near their full adult physical development, whereas many 15-16 girls are pretty close to their full adult size.
