painting something so common in wargame terrain like stone, is being a constant struggle for me to get realistic looking scenery, this method is brilliant! The white weathered scheme its awesome and simple once learned! Congrats!!!!
My dude, you make terrain painting look good and easy. I've been dreading working on all my pieces but doing stuff like this will make it go fast and look good.
Great video, thanks for the effort. It may be interesting to note that Tolkien describes the outer wall of Minas Tirith as being built in the same way as the outer ring wall at Isengard: it is dark and smooth and seemingly impervious, which is why the Witch King did not attack it directly - he had projectiles flung over the outer wall. So the outer rampart of the White City was quite dark.
Thanks dude :D yeah we decided to go for a movie outer wall rather than the black Orthanc stone, but tmit would be really.fun working out a scheme for that in the future :D
This was educational - thanks, and great work! The bit about overlaying washes to avoid hard streaking was very interesting. Also helped me realize that I'm keeping the base coat way too dark :)
Just found your channel, and perfect timing. I’m about to start painting the town gate and walls from Tabeltop World and I was looking for a lighter color scheme and your Minas Tirith be color is the trick! Thank you sir!
I'm building scenic bases for my KoW undead based on the ruins of a white city. I've never had any luck with painting stone before but now I'm super stoked to give this a try on my ruins. Thanks for the great video. Your techniques are so much easier for me to apply to my skill level than those on Squidmar's channel (even though I love seeing his results!) I've subscribed to see what you come up with in the future.

Got linked to your video. Great suggestion by dana. Would love to see this idea taken other schemes particularly say an Egyptian theme of sandstone ie honeycomb and brown colours
This is a fantastic tutorial thank you!! I'm working on a 1/6 scale Amon Hen scene for my Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn figures and have included some damaged stone steps. This tutorial has given me a great method to paint those stones. I'd love to see you make a 1/6 scale LOTR diorama!! Would be epic :)
one person who got some of my bases said they went from cool to oh my god , lol , anyone who is like me and not so good at painting i send the to your guide , have a great day
Wow this is fantastic! All the paints are acrylic right? I am living in another country and the same brand I can’t find but I wanted to make sure is acrylic what we have to use to paint our terrains thank you so much for the video helps a lot
Amazing content, as always. realllllllllllllyyyyyyy looking forward to more guides for various other minas tirith structures. Lachie i know that you're absolutely gonna smash building the main gate.
Great vid bud, stone is a weird one to do without it looking just a boring mix of grey shades. Made some rock pieces for my Rohan but damn can’t seem to nail the lighter grey almost creamish colour of the Rohan landscape.
MinWax polyurethane sprayed onto the foam before any paint is applied will seal the surfaces of the foam so that the spray paint will not be able to eat the foam.
nice video! Do you have an idea / tip how I could paint my masonry in a creepy, ghostly and gloomy dark green and purple? have a nice rest of the week! :) cheers, fraenky
White, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Dungeon Grime :) The image on the right on redit is the Light gray scheme, as done i nthe video :) Just a bit of athonian camoshade used as a filter in the recesses. You see my apply it to the white scheme in detail, but I didn't show it for the last two schemes because it seemed like unnecessary repetition :)
I'm doing something greenish for my digimon right now, and you can pretty much follow this guide with a base coat of light or electric blue, then do the scattered colors in turquoise, dark, and light green (greens to a more saturated hue like orc flesh colors). Then wash with green and then brown (I'm using Army Painter green wash and strong tone). A little bit of purple wash helps, but not all over the model. Then over brush in turquoise, and dry brush in light turquoise.
Thank you so much, I'm currently designing a dice tower for my husband's Hero Scapes game he's had since being a child. This is perfect and so well explained 😄 is your paint all acrylics?
Great stuff mate, think I saw your stuff at Briscon last year (RIP this years). Was curious where you get that foam safe spray in Aus, havnt been able to find any and feels kinda like the holy grail =P. Keep up the good work!
What wash products are you using for the different levels of darkness? I’d love to have those 3 options for better gradients. Thanks and love from Canada!
What brand of paint do you use and is your wash a homemade brew or store bought? Could you please share your recipe if it is made or the brand if it is already made? Thank you
Zorpazorp well it’s here early which we can all be happy about! I’m just gonna have to fill the void between streams with terrain making and painting. Literally all I’ve been doing in quarantine....
Battlements built by groups like Gondor, meaning competent warriors and builders, would NEVER have uneven walkways. They're tripping hazards. Walkways would be built as smooth as possible with grinding and polishing being done regularly to maintain a smooth, hazard free surface that warriors can quickly, and safely, deploy along. Grit would be added to prevent the surface from becoming slippery, and this would act as sand paper beneath the boots of the warriors travelling across the battlement.
Thanks for a great guide on painting stone walls. However, I think it is fair to point out that medieval castles were traditionally plastered and whitewashed both inside and out. In some cases, they were tarred and whitewashed. The plaster protected both the stone and the mortar. This practice can be seen in medieval tapestries and other artwork. One classic example of this was the White Tower in the Tower of London. It would seem that the White City of MInas Tirith would also follow this practice. That means the walls should present as being smooth. The presence of visible stonework would be inconsistent with its historical antecedents. In other words, in many cases, doing all that stone work is not historical. Of course, since Minas Tirith is fictional, one is free to do pretty much as one pleases. However, I would suggest that all of this concern about stonework is unnecessary and makes for a less credible model. Just sayin.
As for Minas Tirith, Tolkien describes the stonework in great detail, specifically mentioned that is it made from massive bricks with no exterior coating, and the stone masonry is of such a high skill that the joints would have once been almost unnoticed. But this wall represents the city at the War of the Ring. The one exception is the outer ringwall, which in the book is described as being made from the same black material as Orthanc. But I went with the Alan Lee/Peter Jackson interpretation :) hence white.

You are a wizard. I just downloaded your template last night. Cheers from Chicago
Hell yes, be sure to post photos up on the FB page!
Arrived to this 3 years later but it's exactly what I needed for my Osgiliath terrain.
I've never seen someone dry brush terrain with a circular motion; that threw me for a loop...but it looks great when it's finished!
Thank you! Cheers! Very useful if you're not trying to show a light source with a particular layer :)
The grime wall looks amazing that's what I want to try
Loving the series keep it up. Making quarantine so much better.
Glad you enjoy it!
Love this video. I even come back and reference it from time to time. Thanks for the great info!

So where is the 4th? Light Grey, Dark Grey, Dungeon Grime.... 4th? Your reddit post has a screenshot with a green hue wall, it's missing from this.
