  • The Modern Horizons series has brought powerful new cards and invoked huge meta shifts in a variety of formats and Vintage is no exception. This time, one artifact is causing an early frenzy with some players even calling for its immediate restriction! Lets break down everything you need to know about Vexing Bauble. My name is Justin IamActuallyLvL1 and this is Voice of Vintage.
    Welcome to a new series of content where I address various talking points around the Vintage community. The goal for this series will be short 10/20 minute, semi scripted videos where I go into my thoughts on the hot topics in the Vintage community. I expect this series to air on an as needed basis.

    Seeing alot of PO comments but I dont particularly like this that implementation. Id pose the following questions:
    Whats your play patterns in early turns for hands that aren't already moxen heavy? Are we just jamming this t1 turning off our own forces and hoping it we dont die or are we waiting with this in hand until we can go off? What happens if we want to have fow to not die and have a couple of these piling up in hand?
    I dont feel like FoW is the card keeping PO down. Flusterstorm, Null Rod, Bowmaster etc dont care much about this card. It feels like people are only thinking about the idealized scenarios. Hands with tons of moxen are the games PO was already winning in.

    I do think Vexing Bauble can do well in Jewel as a better Defense Grid that you only play the turn you’re trying to win. It’s barely a blue deck, and once you’ve drawn enough cards to finally actually have Force up you can sack it and put more moxen down but until then it protects your One Ring/Jewel from countermagic. Hard to pass a Force check when you can’t pitchcast Force, and being 1 mana means it can slot into a Force check hand a lot easier than a 2 drop. The deck does run maindeck Trinisphere, after all. I don’t think Jewel has room to maindeck all 4, but Saga gonna Saga and it can definitely take the spot of Defense Grid in the sideboard I think.
    In cEDH 3feri and Defense Grid are both played as pseudo Silences, where if you pass the turn with either of them still on the field you lose immediately, and I could see Vexing Bauble having a similar role. Being actually playable in Shops is Vexing Bauble’s other big advantage over Void Mirror.

    If you’re using Bauble to push through your PO, why wouldn’t you just pick up the Bauble along with everything else? Then replay all the 0s, then replay the Bauble and go again.

    • @Syaska
      @Syaska Месяц назад +7

      Yup, sure. And you could do the same thing with Void Mirror too. It's not the best example because of the way PO works. But you can imagine other examples like wanting to play your Lotus during your Breach combo. Use bauble to protect your breach, then sac it to play your lotus.

      @@Syaska As much as we could fear it opens us to interaction, I'd much prefer to deal with interaction with Breach in play than with Breach having not resolved. Good comment.

    I think it could do really well in a Lurras pile. You can play it from graveyard at start of your turn and olay out high inoact spells, then remove it during youre opponents turn to counter their stuff.
    And a loop is only two mana so its priced at an even better rate than dress down.

    I was thinking this would be good in shops deck. I wonder if a copy could be run in your KCI list. But there is a lot of looping with moxs but can always just eat it to KCI. MORE KCI content:D

    @chalkchalkson5639 Месяц назад

    I almost completely agree with you. Though I'm not sure about the "combo oriented" qualifier on lurrus saga decks. I think the floor of nieche saga fetch, loop and randomly being good in the opener sometimes is high enough that most lurrus saga decks are interested in the first one. And in more controlling the lurrus decks, the bauble floor is more relevant and you're more often interested in fetching a nieche hate piece. So I think those probably even out the advantage of using it to force something through.
    A play pattern I think I like is in PO. In PO two of the issues you mentioned regarding bauble in combo decks don't really apply (regarding PO casts specifically). Bauble in play, cast PO makes the PO hard to counter. Then after the PO you play moxen --> bauble --> follow up spell. Nicely making sure the bauble protects both of your important spells while not countering your moxen.
    I'm not 100% if it's actually good in PO because the deck is already tight on slots. And the play pattern of PO with that thing in play is an additional drain on mana when that's often already pretty tight when you want to storm.
    I'd love to see you try lurrus po with like 3 of these main deck :D Is that a thing you think is reasonable, too, or am I way off base? Don't have any lurrus po reps rn

    I think this is a potential 4 of in a PO deck. Once you get the draw engine going, you have more cards to win the counterspell wars. This card helps protect that first PO.

    It will see play, that's for sure. At the very least as you pointed out, as a tool for saga+loop in lurrus. Having played in the "prison era" of paper vintage (4*Trinisphere + 2-4*CotV + 4*Lodestone in most workshop lists, 30% workshop meta-share) as a blue or combo oriented player myself, i understand the fear of seeing antivintage cards spreading too much in the metagame. This is never a fun prospect.
    This being said, this is not a card impossible to play around, and it builds interesting interactions. At most would prompt the maindeck
    1* Repeal
    1* Hurkyl
    1* Rebuild
    that all blue decks had to play in the era i was talking about (repeal was printed later, used to be chain of vapor in this exact timeframe, and rebuild is probably too costly for current Vintage, had a spot only to circumvent CotV). Of course, this is just and example of the package, but it might prompt chain of vapor or hurkyl maindeck if this bauble goes viral. 2-3 MD answers if it is a real problem, 2 answers if the symmetrical effect ends up not as good as expected, no answer or play it as a one-of in Saga decks if it is a good tool. Lots of testing must be done.
    Finally, i will say that i am impatient to try it in lurrus breach, and i'm confident PO can break it as a tool to protect the combo, and even fuel it once going off, so i can see your inner combo-self being happy too 😉

      If it's the aggro decks that benefit, then Oath of Druids is the right choice. If it's the combo decks, then prison/control.

    lots of brewing opportunities, gives an edge for mind games on both sides of the bauble. double edged swords are powerful if the wielder knows how to use it. Id be interested in the 1 in the main and 1 in the side kind of decks. This could be good to stall the game until you can hardcast force of will, but regardless of what the implications of the card are, how the community decides to use the card will be interesting. Im glad they made it cost a mana to pop it, if players can soul read hard enough and play with this card at its ceiling, their opponents will be thankful for it.

    I think this card will be restricted for vintage. Simply to preserve the integrity of the vintage format. If this isn't restricted and every one + their mothers run 4x of these in every deck, take away all your moxen and lotus, might as well just call this format: "cracked legacy". or "vintage lite".

    I think people are sleeping on getting uno-reversed with this. Pretty frequently your opp can kill you but is playing around something / doesn't wanna go all in and get punished. Plenty of times on both sides of a defence grid player number 2 goes "oh, cool - you're dead"

    • @randall0001
      @randall0001 Месяц назад
