The AEA KU5A breaks new ground in ribbon microphone technology with its supercardioid polar pattern that rejects off-axis sound from room reflections, other instruments, and loud stage ambience in live situations. At close range, the KU5A captures extended highs while retaining the smooth sonic character one expects from an AEA ribbon mic. Singers can get right up on the grille without damaging the ribbon element, because the KU5A's interior components are the most well-protected of any mic in the AEA lineup. The KU5A's active electronics make for a perfect match with any preamp.

Mitch, that acoustic guitar sounds great, but appears unlabeled. Is there a brand/luthier/model you can share?

Seems like a really versatile mic. I like my old-style ribbon microphones, but I wouldn't mind an active one with a bit flatter response. Both the super cardioid pattern and bass rolloff make it much more useful for live applications, as well. A bit pricey when you can buy a 57 and 58 both for about a fifth the price, but well within the normal range for ribbon mics.

699 USD and they'd sell 2-3x more than at the current 999 USD. But that's just my guesstimate.

What's the point of talking into a different mic for this??
I want to hear how that mic sounds!

I would have loved to hear more vocal examples of the KU5A; that's the main purpose of the mic, and we only got about 10 seconds here. I haven't been sold on the vocal sound from the demos I've heard so far, so that's my main area of interest. Sounds great on the amps though.

Never heard of a ribbon with a supercardioid polar pattern until now!

Me, either. The closest thing I've seen is the Beyer Dynamic M 160, also an end address ribbon microphone, but hyper cardioid instead.

Really? never heard of Beyer-Dynamic? Been around for decades.

Brian Cullen Never said that. This is a supercardioid; the M160 is a hypercardioid.

I find supercardioid ribbon mics really helpful in the residential bedroom recording environment and I love the natural/accurate sound quality. This is the most versatile one imo (big low end, HPF, more rugged/compatible) and I have a couple older Beyerdynamic M500’s which are brighter and a bit finicky, but beautiful as well.

For some reason mine sounds really bad. When I sing at a distance from it, it still pops obnoxiously and that's when I'm being very conscious of plosives. Also, the high pass filter switch arrived stuck down and AEA never replied to the two repair requests I filled out to have it fixed. I've had it for a few months and all my experimenting has been failure after failure. It doesn't seem to reject sound from the sides and back as advertised too. Gonna send mine back to get it replaced and hope I just got a dud.

How did this end up for you? Did you get it fixed? What was the issue with it?

I respect premium pricing and "hand-built in the USA" but at 699 USD (vs 999 USD) you'd sell A LOT of these. Especially after Bandrew used it for his podcast / VLOG. Look at the comments for that video ("Recording a podcast with a ribbon..." is the title).
