  • This week we're looking at an amazing active ribbon mic from AEA, the KU5A. While it physically resembles an older RCA mic, the BK5A/B, the two mics share little else when it comes to internal design. We put the mic up on piano, electric guitar, upright bass, snare drum, and in front of trumpet in a live setting.
    Special thanks to: Deep Pockets for the demo today. Please check them out @ / deeppocketsband

    Im glad I got one , just for its versatility as a uni-directional ribbon mic. I find the treble a bit hard when I use my ultra clean hi gain preamps that do absolute wonders on my vintage ribbon mics, thus I use other less detailed pre's and it sounds just right!, Also my Rode NTR has a similar extended top end.

      Its pretty crazy how much top end this ribbon mic has. I usually dont run mine thru the aea mic pres for the same reason. Thanks for checkin out the channel!

    Great Video Aea N22 great mic for electric guitar cab Plus only thing I would say that would improve the test is each mic being positioned in there optimum position for best sound ... not the same as each other because one will be at an advantage over the other

      Its really is great as long as you dont blow into it. Or put it in front of REALLY loud guitar cabs…. Ya know…. 😂

      Probably one of the most ridiculous things ive ever dug up on a mic. Like, was there really no other material on earth at the time that could be used?

      I had the same thought. The answer would probably be an interesting rabbit hole in itself. It could be for a similar reason there are feather pillows, mohair fabric, down jackets. Nature is the oldest manufacturer on the planet.

    Great job as always. Your channel has a bright future. What is the most used mic in your studio if I may ask? Thanks

      Thanks, it wouldnt go anywhere without people like you! Thanks for watching!
      Most used… geeze. Probably the AKG 414XL ii or our Peluso 2247 SE. We’ve been doing a lot of acoustic guitar and vocal work the last few months and those are my go-to’s for those purposes.

      @@meistudiony Perfect. Both great mics. Mine is the MD421 and tlm 49 for voice overs or singing. Expensive Mic but man so nice. MKH416 as well is one of my favourites.

      @meistudiony  9 месяцев назад +1

      @QuantumGamingUploads the MKH is on my short list. Theres a couple of odd balls i want to get soon as well from little known companies. The TLM is very nice I got to use it a while back on a session. Real nice tone to it! The 421, all depends on version for me. The U is probably my fav.

      @@meistudiony Great... if you get a chance pick up a pair of the Alder Audio H44 ribbons too, They are inexpensive with a unique designed ribbons with different front/rear voicing and a new ribbon design. They about half the size of the AEA N8 but about the same weight and have their own family sound. They are highly underrated IMHO.

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  Месяц назад

      @@georgewoolf6300 just reached out to them. The H44s are currently out of stock. They have the symmetrical version but i think id rather go with the more flavorful version. Thanks for the recommendation.

    • @georgewoolf6300

      @@meistudiony The semmetrical version is even on both sides, the standard has a slightly brighter voicing on one side... both are well worth testing. If you are ordering a pair ask for the shielded version to help protect against any hum.

    Hi! I’m really interested in mics used in old tv show, like the Munsters and so on. Just a suggestion for future content, if it works for you. I’d love to have this mic you featured today, but seriously, I can’t see you giving it away! Ha!
    I’m a mic nut… and really enjoy the “That’s what she said” guy, Bark too. He’s one of a kind.
    Anyway… that’s for another very well done and fascinating mic video, to make my day better than it would have been without you!

      Chuk, Yeah, im not giving that one away any time soon! lol Thats an interesting topic, and i'd be glad to look into it and see if i can dig up anything interesting. I know a little more about mics that were used more for movies back then, but not really much about TV. Definitely worth a look!
      Bark is a good friend and has helped me tremendously in growing this channel! He's an awesome dude!
      I really appreciate you checking it out and taking time to view it!
