    You already know your D202 was faulty. I have a special version that is blue and gold that I use in all my videos. I think it sounds really good with no processing at all. On top of that it's so ugly so it almost becomes cool. I tried it on drums and other sources and liked it so much that I bought the other 5 (black) D202 from the same old studio here in Stockholm. I had to repair a few of them of cause. Thanks for a good video!

      I would love to know if you were able to open the head basket. I took a saw to one of the ones i had to try and figure out a way to open it to try and service it, and even after that, I couldn't find a way to do it without being destructive in some way.

      @@meistudiony I couldn't open the head basket either. I had one with the same problem as yours. By comparing it to the working ones I managed to locate where the broken wire was supposed to be, did a bit of surgery on the plastic and managed find the wire and repair it. Far from easy. It also initially took quite some time to figure out that the nut at the end of the tube in the bottom of the mic was what was holding the top. Two of the mics I have someone had tried unscrew the head basket like you can do on other mics and that way tearing apart the internal wireing, that someone hadn't found the nut at the end of the tube apparently.

    I think your d202 is not working properly. It sounds like it has a blanket on it. I have one and sounds more "like a condenser"(it has more mid and high frequency content).
    Thanks for your work!

      Thanks for the reassurance. I figured as much. Just stinks that I got two and they both sounded exactly the same. (2 from 2 different places!) tAnd even stranger that they start picking up more high end (up to 13k) with higher impedance. But they are out of whack. Just proves that you gotta be really careful buying these today without being able to hear em.

    Thanks for another excellent and informative video! We have an AKG D900E Shotgun mic sitting quietly in a storage cabinet. We acquired it well-used, more than a dozen years ago at a Surplus Sale from the local university. Sadly, we quickly decided that it was too heavy, too long and far too anemic to be a good choice for us. It's length is greater than our blimps (even with blimp extensions). Heck, it's too long to function in our voice over booth. As a dynamic mic, we couldn't get usable levels on our mobile recording gear and sticking it on the end of a boom pole was giving our operator (me) a real workout. I will say that that it's the most directional mic I've ever come across. Thanks for asking.

      I just got some Uher 514, 516 and 512 mics for super cheap. The capsules are very nicely built. I had to do some poking with the multimeter to figure out which wires were which, but I replaced the 5 pin din cable (for their reel to reel machines) with an XLR. The mics sound very good. Really warm.

    As far as I know, the C314 is not a stereo mic or even a dual capsule, it has a standard dual diaphragm as in the C414, You may were thinking about the C24 I guess

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  8 месяцев назад

      I wasnt thinking of the 24. Thats an higely obvious dual element mic though. But you are correct. I tried using some new sources for info this video and its been a terrible pain in the rear. Ill need to remove that from the vid. Thanks for the heads up.

    • @beatbazarstudio8091
      @beatbazarstudio8091 8 месяцев назад

      I have investigated more about the C314 and it's a dual element large diaphragm electret, still mono, just multipattern, I think that it's basically a C4000 with a more appealing look.
      I'd also think that the UHER M534 isn't dual capsule either. To my knowledge UHER's dual capsules is the M538.
      It's quite hard to find trustable info about UHER's mics, they are pretty obscure

    The D200E1 DEFINITELY had an audible crossover - we talked about this before in another comment thread. I'm surprised you never heard of Uher (pronounced "yoo-er") before - look for Uher "report" reel-to-reels, you'll find them interesting, I think. And you're right, the D200's have a cheap look and feel. That D202 is broken - it should not sound like that. I think the treble capsule is out.

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey thanks for comment. I will check that out. The almighty algorithm definitely tracks what you do. After looking up stuff for this video uher mics started popping up in my ebay and reverb “feed”. I knew something wasnt right with it. Very odd how much it changes with the impedance shift though. Not sure i wanna go hunting for another one or not. Cool as hell looking mic but im 2 for 2 getting them busted. And i think that comment thread youre talking about was the start of me doing this video haha!

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, thats the general consensus. Hopefully one day i can get a 224, 202 and 222 that are in functioning condition to complete the collection lol. And the issue that they are hard to find in good condition was one of the points I was trying to make. Unless you can hear the mic before you buy it, the market is probably not great for anyone to pick one of these up without being able to hear it first hand.

      @@meistudiony What is your priority to Buy? A good Mic, A good Preamp or a Good analogue console? regards!

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@julianpedro3215 depends on the situation. In a studio setting there really is no need for an analog console anymore. It no longer offers us anything we cant get in the box but better. If youre doing a dawless synth setup or something, a small mixer is great to get everything in and out to a stereo pair.
      Im always a proponent of using s great mic when you can, but the more of these things i look at the more i realize it doesnt matter that much. Same with mic pres. We recorded a jazz band a couple weeks ago using the cheapest mics we could find ($140 for 7 drum mics) and really cheap behringer preamps. Recording sounded great.
      We’re at the point where great sounding stuff can be had at a fraction of the cost it was just 10/20 years go. And light years beyond what we had in the 90s and before.

    Your D202 is definitely faulty and not representative of the proper working models. I have four fully working D202's and one broken one and one D222 which I got for period musical project. The D202 was a favorite for the UK's BBC radio network, and proved to be a versatile performer used in many different ways. They were sometimes seen on TV broadcasts. I would tend to agree with one of the other commentators, that the D202 (and D222) exhibited a surprisingly flat response up to about 15kHz with a quality alike some modern flat response condensers. then it had a gentle droop in the HF. After all FM radio broadcasts could not go above 15KHz. Their lack of proximity effect also meant it was easier for broadcasters to compensate for participants who did not keep the same distance from the capsule.
    My own perception of the these mics proximity effect is the closer the participant gets to the capsule the colouration is good until you get with 2.5cm or1 inch when the treble begins to rise disproportionately, so the mics are not good for performers who touch their lips on the microphones like rock acts.
    They are a very complex design, and like you I had 1 where the HF was missing, and despite my many years of working with fine electronics, I couldn't revive it. I do agree with you the mics are probably too delicate for road usage these days
