This video is useful in a way that is rare to find in D&D content on RUclips. Concrete, transparent and very organized. Way to go, Professor DM!
Thank you. Please share it. I want to build a reputation for this content and focus on it.
One of the best D&D videos I've seen. Your upgrade to the +3 Vest of Content really shows.
Prof dm is the only guy who can say reimagining old dnd and it sounds exciting.
Thank you so much!
Feel bad for QuestionBeast.
But I get the sentiment!
@@AyarARJ different energy. I prefer Ben’s energy for reviews a LOT. But this stuff is
Killer just the way it is.
Yeah if anyone else reimagines old D&D, I get nervous...Questing Beast is awesome as well.
Shoutout to Seth Skorkowsky! His AD&D playlist beautiful complements the Dungeoncraft attitude
Wow... Professor, this is next level content. Great job and thanks! I DM's the Veiled Society myself years ago and its one of my favorite modules. Like you I used the content of the module for inspiration and greatly expanded upon it, and the repercussions of that adventure lasted throughout my Mystaran campaign. The first was the enslaved kobold Reno whom the PCs spared during that encounter, and he became sort of the 'party mascot', doing odd jobs for the party, cleaning up and generally doing the mundane grunt work. In return, the party protected him, fed him, made sure he had good clothes, armor and weapons. In the end, the PCs ended up getting teleported to the Hollow World accidently. A year in game time later (about 6 months in real time) when they finally returned, Reno was serving drinks at their old favorite tavern, AND he was secretly a member of an underground organization attempting to overthrow Baron Von Hendricks who had somehow managed to assassinate Stephan Karameikos.
The method of assassination was directly linked to a weird thing they found hidden behind a secret door in the flu of a fireplace in one of the abandoned Noble Houses from the Veiled Society module!! Lost of fun.
Starting a campaign outside a tavern? I usually use the 'in media res' technique... using the backgrounds of the characters, I come up with a situation where they might come together. .. 'while traveling on the road' for example. I also encourage as many character connections BEFORE the start of the campaign so that everyone is not necessarily a 'stranger'. Then I'll introduce some conflict that will probably lead to combat. I make sure its an EASY win for the PCs, and the situation is pretty 'black and white.' These guys are bad, they are doing bad things and you guys can be the heroes if you take them down.' THAT leads to the next thing, and based on the the players want to do, I start developing things in that direction. No tavern required.
Thanks for this. I am really looking forward to the next parts!!
I love YOUR channel! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I won't tell you which (it would spoil the surprise), but one of your video reviews convinced me to do the NEXT campaign. I appreciate you sharing these videos when they come out. I think your audience would enjoy them. May all your rolls be 20s!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Will do!
This is what got me into your channel; Stories about your game and I'm so happy they're back.
I'm happy you keep coming back, Bryan. I'd be grateful if you shared this video. I am tired of One D&D content.
Been here since the Caves and have stayed for all the great content. Love the random adventure generator, and love the notebook. Miniatures are beautiful and this scenario is amazing.
Thank you!
I love the name Caves of Carnage. Great name. Just the name makes me want to play in that campaign.
I wish I could play in this game. I love the idea and plot.
Thanks! Please share!
I absolutely love this channel. I've watched the caves of carnage video's so many times now and I'm actually running a campaign now inspired by those video's! My players are loving it! Thank you for all the great ideas!
You are welcome. If these videos perform well I will do more of them. So please share.
Man I could feel the tension just from the description of the leaning tower encounter. Love games that get the blood pumping.
Nice video. Not only do you present an interesting scenario, but it's also full of great DM advice.
And it's remarkable to see how cinematic you can make a video with regular old miniatures with proper camera work, some after effects and music. Now I want to make one in this style too.
Glad you enjoyed it! wait until you see episodes 2&3!
I briefly ran an all-Rogue game for a thief oriented campaign. Would have done all-Thief, but people were playing 5e. Group was fragile so it didn't last. I may try it again someday with more reliable players.
One trick I did was I revamped the leveling system. Each player picked a "vice" for their PC. A vice was anything that was expensive, potentially debilitating, addictive, and you had nothing to show for it. It could be drugs, gambling, brothels, alcohol, expensive tobacco, etc. Something that ruined many people's finances and lives.
To gain levels, players had to spend 50 times their current level in GP on their vice. And most of the NPCs did their day to day business in silver, so gold was rare.
This gave a powerful incentive to get money for the players and the temptation to rip each other off. It also took all leveling out of my hands, which was quite fun. And the party very quickly moved from "We'll split the take from the heist" to "everyone keeps what they get." Didn't make a lot of motivation to stand watch outside while your friends are inside looting.
Finally its on! This is the content you excel at!
Thank you. This content generally doesn't do as well. I would appreciate if you share it. Peace!
I love the notebooks. That's a great way to get player feedback without having to have a moot at the end of the session, which can be a hard sell to players with limited time or a low tolerance for public speaking or conflict.
"Conflict designer" is perfect. I also think "Story broker" is a good term for how DM's actually interact with story elements.
A "Conflict Designer". You have mentioned this before and I have adopted the same approach. For example, when I design traps in my dungeons I do so from the perspective of the dungeon inhabitants irrespective of the party and their make up because the dungeon inhabitants don't know the party and their capabilities or limitations. I also don't design into the trap a way out, that's for the players to figure out. The players have been in situations where I thought they were doomed but they figured out ways to escape that I never thought of. Leave it in the hands of the players is by far the most fun for all involved.
Thanks for sharing!
I love these videos. I’m about to run adventures in my homebrew city and the advice and tips here are priceless
Glad you like them! Please share it. If you do, you get extra xp.
Indeed. I used a twist of PDM's Rowena & Angus plot and it worked (and is working out) quite nicely.
@@robertwarren4734 Cool!
I really like the idea of rolling dice for quests. I think I'm gonna try it out and see how it works since my players love sandbox campaigns
I loved your Caves of Carnage videos so I've been looking forward to these!
More to come!
I love these videos, this is the best way to run these older game modules.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Your campaign videos are, far and away, the best I've seen on youtube. Can't wait for the next installment!
Thanks! Please share them so they reach a wider audience.
Love Dungeon Craft and catching up on videos missed. Here's a comment for engagement
Thank you! the third episode comes out on the 29th!
This video is a great distillation of many of your older ideas and videos. Snappy presentation, hopefully the algorithm deems it worthy.
I hope so. I killed myself making these.
Got a deja vu feeling here but looking forward to the next episodes
No, seriously me too. When he starts talking about the back stories around Around 5:50. I SWEAR I have seen this before😬
Pretty sure he's presented the exact same scenario in a previous video. Shame he didn't come up with something new
The small notebooks thing is brilliant! Not only does it encourage note taking, but it's also great for GM and Player to pass info to the other privately between sessions. Also great for giving the GM a sense of how much info the party has actually picked up on and what they missed.
Thanks for the feedback. Don't miss episode 2! ruclips.net/video/95zr1mmx4vM/видео.html
so strange that your videos are so imprinted in my mind that i recognised two of these… fictional merchant house names. i can’t even remember what i ate for breakfast yesterday
I remember my character names better than my own kids!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 that had me laughing so hard.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 There's a missed opportunity. You should have just named your kids after your characters.
Great vid PDM. Have you talked about this setting before? The mention of the merchant families, the villainous alchemists and the setting definitely ring some bells. The three Ts in the tower is fantastic, and I'm absolutely stealing this. Thanks for enhancing my rpg experience.
So I put out "The Veiled Society" last summer, imbedded in other videos. But at conventions I kept getting asked why I stopped doing the minis and models. Do I decided to re-edit the Veiled Society footage together in one place. Then I shot a ton more video and extended the content by three times. So this is "The Director's Cut" and it's way better.
This is Peak Dungeon Craft. These types of vids got me hooked on the channel in the first place. Love how you run these games 👌🤌
A lot of people behind the scenes like DM Scotty and Hankerin Ferinale over at Runehammer have encouraged me to do more of this content. It doesn't get the same hits at One D&D stuff, but more of the con crowd dig it. Thanks for watching!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 this is the content I've wanted for the last decade.
It's good, regardless of system
Man, that tip on threatening the stats and gear of experience players is SHARP!
It doesn’t get newbies like hit point loss does, but losing their chosen bonuses terrifies the seriously prepared player.
Thanks. New video out now! ruclips.net/video/95zr1mmx4vM/видео.html
This was well worth the wait! Excited for next week too :D
Love the re-imagining of these old modules and adding a new flair to them.
Thanks, Scott! Sequel out now: ruclips.net/video/95zr1mmx4vM/видео.html
Thanks Professor! I love you “miniature” masterpiece theatre! Thank you!
Thank you. Please share this video--it's tough to get traction with this sort of video.
Excellent, concise, informative, entertaining and educational. You earned a sub with this one.
This is outstanding, Prof. Probably the best summary of this type I've found on YT.
Thanks. Please do me a favor and share. I love making this type of content but it underperforms next to the "One D&D" clickbait--and I'm tired of that stuff.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Will do, and I'm tired of that clickbait stuff too.
I just shared this with one of my groups. We're currently about 80% through Icewind Dale, but this might make for a great follow-up campaign. Not everyone is keen on the idea of HP 0 = Death (though I'm down with it), but I think they'll like the higher stakes. Plus being told right out the gate to create a primary and backup characters sets the tone.
Great point about not worrying about game balance. A lot of people focus on that concept when really it’s almost impossible to tell if something is balanced.
Yes!!! Those dastardly Munchburgers! All of your videos are good, but your campaign videos are my favorite D&D content on RUclips. So glad it's back!
Best Channel on RUclips and sooooooooo underrated!!! These videos with the dioramas and adventure explanations are phenomenal!!!
Thank you! Please share it. If you do, you get extra xp.
A great start to a great campaign.
I really enjoyed the high quality scenes mixed with your thoughts on DM'ing and recounting player reactions. This is really great content and I am so glad that I still have 30 minutes left on my lunch to watch the next part! Thanks for the content, Professor DM!
Thanks. The Supercut is out now.
I absolutely love these campaign videos. They inspire my own homebrew world. Thank you professor.
Brilliant advice as always -- thank you, sir!!!
This is great! I can't wait for the next video. I think the urban setting lends spectacularly to a gritty challenging campaign, there's always a bigger fish nearby in the city.
Thanks! Each video gets better and better. The third is the best video I've ever made.
I really enjoyed listening to this while I was slap chopping some minis. Thanks Professor Dungeon Master.
Glad you enjoyed it! Supercut coming soon.
Nice! I've been looking forward to this one. Great work Professor.
Thanks for watching and sharing this video!
Beautiful explanation
This feels like an excellent return to form, I'm very excited to see where this series goes next!
Thank you. These are my favorite videos.
I cannot believe RUclips didn't send this to my notifications. Outstanding campaign and explanation, solid video! I love the Veiled Society as well, and clearly you have a great take on this classic. I really like your communication through session zero, structuring and working with the players. Great ideas for helping the players shape their characters and using the player ideas to shape things as well.
Staying with the David Cook theme, I'm running Isle of Dread (with my own touches) for my group. My primary motivation was my love of King Kong, Dinosaurs, and jungle settings. My players are loving it, as their play style is suited more for dinosaurs than intrigue.
You mentioned using OSR and 5e mixed together, and I have to call out the excellent Goodman Games version that combines 5e with classic in the same sweet hardcover book. Great product and my choice for running my campaign. I have the Keep on the Borderlands version, and I need to pick up the others. It's one of my favorite 5e product ideas.
2:33
Saving that so I can refer to it in my own campaigns. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching and sharing!
Great video. Loved your comment. ."every time they walk through a tavern they have to make a saving throw or they have to have a beer". But thats so true to real life. Haha. And thank you for the "think beyond the character sheet" quote. I will be using that in my future game sessions a lot!. Looking forward to MacDeath at Pax Unplugged!
Cool! I am here now, in the Hilton lobby. Ready to play!
My favorite type of videos from you. I have researched it a few times.
My favorite type of video to make. And each of the three episodes gets better and better!
Excellent, this is a great encounter example. Memorable and pushing players to the edges. More content like this please.
Been looking forward to this one! Big fan of the caves of carnage, love to see this as well!
Thanks! Pass it along!
Great video! Always enjoy your work!
Thanks for commenting. You should check out my campaign update The Reviled Society. I think you'll like it. ruclips.net/video/95zr1mmx4vM/видео.html
I wasn’t logged into RUclips after getting a new phone, so I completely missed these. I am astonished at this series. Awesome.
Increíble, espere mucho y he re visto muchas veces la primera campaña.
¡Gracias por ver!
added twist...the families are Were-ppl. Rats, Cats, Ravens. This is so great, please keep up the great work!!!
Thank you! Please share it!
AS a GM for over 34 years now this channel has some of the best advice for beginning (and seasoned) GMs. I'd say "DMs", but really your advice can be used in ANY RPG game. I use the countdown method a lot in my horror games. When I first started running Call of Cthulhu I got annoyed at how much time some players would take to decide what to do, so I started a countdown where I announce the countdown, hold up my had, and the player has five seconds to decide what to do. They can't decide, they forfeit their turn as their character's flight or fight response is overwhelmed by the chaos of the scene. I used the countdown method when I ran old TSR's Bughunters game for their Amazing Engine System. Not a lot of time to decide what to do when assault rifles are blazing and alien horrors are trying to eat your face or lay eggs in your chest. I also never come up with a sure fire way to resolve conflicts either. I did when I was a starting GM, but found out fast that a group of crafty players can shred your well thought out ending quick. I switched gears and just developed exiting scenes and conflicts and let the game play out based on dice rolls and the players' actions. In the end I found the games much more enjoyable and full-filling. Plus, a lot of the games ended in ways that gave me PLENTY of fodder for continuing plots as the PCs created enemies, ended up on the wrong side of the law, or just fouled things up. But even when they failed (or succeeded yet FUBAR everything) it still allowed me to keep going and take the story in directions that even I never planned on. It is now my preferred method and it has worked in spades for my long running cyberpunk game.
Thanks, Timothy. PLEASE share this video. I am so tired of One D&D. Not a hater--just tired. May all your rolls be 20s!
Lots of useful information here in this video. A slightly different way generating the PCs, one character class only, and love the way your players brought it all together. And it sounds like the players survived a tense raid on the alchemist tower what with all the listed complications!
😃😃😃😃
I can't think if I've already said this elsewhere, but I like how you have listed what miniatures you've used for adversaries and characters alike. Very handy if someone likes either the minis you are using, or the paint schemes to use on a similar mini one already might have in their own collection. Much appreciated.
👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
Thanks for the video.
Thank YOU for watching and sharing it!
Some very useful tips here for setting up adventures. I'm doing Deadlands with SWADE and focused it on the pacific northwest. Starting in Central Oregon. So much pre made resources but I need better encounter tables. This video has given me some great ideas. Thank you Professor Dungeon Master
I am not great with comments, but I've just watched your 300ed episode, and as someone who's love for TT with minis made me leave a cushy corporate job and start a miniatures company, I came back here and would like to say that your campaign videos are the perfect entertainment for me. Your Tabletop looks great and I enjoy your story telling immensely. Cheers - Kawe from Westfalia Miniatures.
Man, the general principles that drive this set up are perfect. Dead on with the commentary. I've always felt that creating problems or conflicts and handing them to the players without a specific solution in mind is key to player creativity and encourages players to engage and interact with the fictional environment in a way that's more intuitive and immersive. If every conflict is "balanced" to match the players, the world fees artificial - it also encourages the players to view every problem with a "I've got a hammer, this must be another nail" kinda way. As if the players are entitled to "win" anytime they encounter complications and can expect an even playing field - like this was a game of checkers or something, instead of a improvisational form of storytelling and imagination play. Doing this also prevents you as the DM from giving in to the temptation to railroad the players. "Nuh uh, you didn't find the 1 true solution, keep looking!" haha.
I want to thank you for making me a better dm. I’ve used this, the goblins you made and the man skinner for my game and my players LOVE the challenging nature of it. I love your style of dming and would love to see you in action
Your attention to detail is incredible. Gonna watch part 2 next 🙂
I put the leaning tower of death on my campaign (I've seen that on Prof DM patreon, best investment ever), and we beat a record, 6 hours playing non stop and the players didn't want to stop, one of the best scenarios, than you Professor DM
Thank you for supporting my work on Patreon. You made this video possible. I spent six weeks making these videos and the reason they look this good is because of the equipment you purchased. Much love and respect.
Really dig the setup and how you got the ball rolling on the 3 sessions. Love the miniatures as always. Very cool as always Sir.
Daaaannngg. Totally going to use this exact encounter. Its fantastic!
Thanks!
Great video - more like this please.
I’ve enjoyed your descriptions of this campaign, Professor. I love the idea of an all Rogue (Thief to the Grognards) campaign set in a city.
I have a campaign I’m running now that has some heavy city action including political and guild intrigue that some of this would be perfect for, especially the alchemy- I’ve got an Assassins Guild head that is dual Assassin / Alchemist.
I appreciate your encounter building approach of having the “Kill it to death” tack not work.
Cool! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Please share the video!
Thanks for doing this. Loved it on Patreon, but was slow to watch it again here. Cheers!
Excellent video. I love the peeks of your campaigns and how you weave it with tips
Thanks for taking the time to respond! Please share this video with your coolest friends. May all your rolls be 20s!
Fantastic! Looking forward for a new reimagining of a classic.
Thanks!
Great video love the bit about attacking gear and stats
More to come!
Thanks for pointing me to this from your latest vid
Holy cow! So much good advice here. I am definitely going to think about a lot of this for my games. Thank you for this. Can't wait to watch more!!
Never I thought a combat with 4 relatively normal individuals could be THAT exciting.
As great as I expected Professor
Thanks! Extra XP if you share it!
This video is gold! 👍🏻

Love it!! So glad you are sharing your thoughts, ideas, and strategies
I'm so glad you're watching!
Fantastic video can’t believe I missed this one. Another thing I do to add tension when the PCs start doing too much planning is use sand timers. This gives them a bit of time but not too much. Plus having the sand timer in the middle of the table gets everyone on edge.
This is absolutely fantastic (1 year later) thanks
Love this. I’ve been posting a playlist of narrated write ups on my (small) channel as an account of my Princes of the Apocalypse campaign. However, this video is giving me the idea to do a ‘DM Notes’ bunch of videos, where I explain what happened behind the screen, including the curveballs thrown at me by the players. Not sure how much traction it might gain but, as a DM, I’ve just got to keep creating!
A very rich and exciting scenario, I've watched it a couple of times now and it doesn't get old! Great stuff as always PDM.
Glad you enjoy it!
The cinematography!
Great content! I am inspired!

love these types of videos by you
I love making them! Please share it so I can stop making videos about One D&D!
Love this! I really enjoyed the Caves of Carnage and Matt Colville's campaign diaries and wish there was more content like those on RUclips. Not actual plays but just recaps of what happened with the DMs thoughts
There will be more to come. Much more. I'm moving the channel in this direction. So tired of One D&D. Not a hater. Just tired.

Excellent video! I love what you do.
Thank you very much! Please share this video so I can stop making crappy clickbait about One D&D!
I’ve waiting for this recap since the ‘better social encounters’ video. I’ve picked up ICRPG, LotFPrincess, veins of the earth, and Goodman Games Into the Borderlands. Thanks to your reviews. I’m running ‘the bulwark of ulterrious’ which is KotB reimagined as a space station on the edge of a asteroid belt. I’m using a mishmash of your caves of carnage with elements of 40k and the Borderlands game series. Thanks for the great ideas and content!!
Excited for this new series
I'm excited to bring it to you. It was agonizing, but my best content. Please share it with your coolest friends!
This is awesome , as much as l like the crafting, , this is gold. One of the kids in my group had in her back story that she was one of 6 sisters born with a seahorse birthmark on the palm of their left hand ... put up for adoption in different provinces... this always adds a great dimension to writing senerios.
Cool backstory!
Very Well Done! Always appreciate your content! Keep up the Fantastic Work! 🙂
so good. Shared with my Lurking Fears page!
Thanks, Matt!
Fantastic video!
Thanks so much!
I've been waiting for this! The sessions on Patreon are great fun!
Thank you. You'll notice the opening is different than the Patreon version. Each video is slightly different, with a couple new images and V.O. I tinker right up until posting. So it';s worth it to watch them here as well.
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Yup, I noticed. "Done" never is when you've got the opportunity for one more tweak. I write code, I understand these things.
Tremendous content! I've been missing the old campaign update format and this was worth the wait.
Excellent video PDM. You do great work . I want to have more fun at my own DnD sessions and that seems to always be your goal!
Thank you. Please share this video with your friends!
Great Video. The tropes I use to get players are different. The players can decide how they know each other, or I can do things like the following, all given a note to meet at a place, the first POI of the story (steal an item from them if you need to use a carrot). They all wake up captured w/o their gear. I find I only have to do the above once or twice before they are more than willing to tell me why they are all together.
This keeps me away from the, you all meet at a tavern.
Cool ideas!
