Good
Why not just concrete block fill the space the window occupied? More secure IMO
Definitely could have done that but it would have been slower and more expensive since I already had this material.
@@craftedworkshop I was curious lol. Making use of materials to hand is a good budgeting decision though
These videos are too short. This is an awesome series.
Was about to comment this exact line.
Hah, thanks! More coming soon.
@@craftedworkshop more more more more
@@rlyshifty Yes! More!
Love that you worked with a structural engineer to evaluate a structure problem then actually took their advice vs just trying to wing it and doing it yourself. The mark of a true professional.
Definitely trying to do things the right way here!
You were pretty lucky to have to Perkins Crew at your service, this job would have taken way much longer I imagine! Loved the not-so-tiny-home series, but this is a very nice series too!
I'm just a homeowner with a damp basement, but everything I've read says that you need to have a way to get the moisture out of those walls. We did an interior dimple board barrier so that we could separate the framing from the brick walls but still suck the moisture out with a dehumidifier. This looks like the equivalent of putting your foundation in a ziplock bag, but maybe I'm wrong.
Drylok he applied on his walls plus creating a positive grade away from building will make the amount of moisture in his building negligible. If you have a basement that is either fully below grade or the section that is below grade with a negative slope towards basement then you would definitely need exterior drainage to let water perc away from the building and air gaps in the interior to allow circulation.
There's also the possibility of adding a French drain or weeping tile drain system against the exterior of the block foundation, since they can easily gravity drain towards the front of the building.
That’s the plan, positive drainage and potentially some kind of French drain or drain tile should take care of it.
Dude, this is turning out amazing! Can't wait to come back and see it
I’m only at minute 3 but wondering if smaller windows with outdoor blinds would have helped.
Im a content creator for brands and I’m rebuilding my shop too, right now I only have one window, the other one i swapped it for a wall Ac and I miss natural light a lot.
I understand the benefits of controlling the environment but natural light is so soothing to work with (at least to me).
Big fan of the series
I only found this channel after going through every PBB vid and seeing how highly they respect you and your work! I can easily see why you guys all get along so well
blacking out the windows, anti-humidity treatment of walls and floors - feels u build something totally different ;)
Been enjoying this new series and loving the use of all the old timber. Most people can’t afford complete new On a build so nice to see someone reusing old.
It's coming along really well. Glad to see all the progress. Can't wait to see it finished!
Me neither!
Literally my favourite series on youtube right now!
Wow, thanks a lot!
Love watching perking brothers crew especially the Ray Jay brothers work hence watching your rebuild
Their work ethic is amazing, they get it done quick!
That shop is an amazing space - every craftsman's dream!
It’s definitely a dream come true! Can’t wait to get it dialed in!
Fantastic work, Johnny! 😃
It's turning out better and better!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks!
😱 can't wait to see the next episodes 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This Collab is so good, and making your project come together soon much faster
For sure!
Stumbled upon your channel from a comment you made on cuckoos op1 tutorial from yearsssss ago! Dope videos man. I’m not even INTO wood building but you made me interested in it. That’s the sign of a quality video as far as I’m concerned 👌🏾👌🏾
Here from the Perkins Brothers channel! Love the content. and loved the shot with the planer!
Gotta say, y’all do great work, well done 👍🏼
Thanks!
I've been recommending this to my mates, this is such an epic build series, I've watched some of your other videos and this is by far the most addictive, I just cant wait to start seeing less of the walls, and start seeing the noticeable progression. this is such an under watched channel but mainly under watched build series, this workshop conversion is so entertaining
Thanks a lot man, really appreciate that!
@@craftedworkshop no worries, love the content, but ur sitting on footage and back dating it as such, pleeease more frequent uploads of this series 😂 😁
@@craftedworkshop either way it’s amazing quality editing and ur upload schedule won’t change that 🤙👊👌
@@digbyvincent2396 hah, I’m only sitting on one more video at this point! Have to pace things so I don’t run out during slow periods.
@@craftedworkshop ye ye don’t worry I understand why it’s just so good 😊 keep up the great work
The slow motion shots add to the video. Looking good!
Cool, thanks!
Great work
9:44 OH NO!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 YOU'RE TOO FOCUS ON A SHOT THOUGH! 😂😂😂
Very interesting project and enjoyable to watch. That building was challenging. Those Perkins guys seem pretty good.
I think the wooden buttresses are there because the retaining wall is tilted. So as a safety measurement the previous tenant/owner installed these triangular walls against the concrete part of the exterior wall. If I had to tackle this problem I would build a couple or three buttresses along this wall but made out of concrete just protruding 80 cms (30 inches) from the surface of this wall
that truck going backwards at 3:24 caught me of guard
Great series - really enjoy watching your progress. The slo-mo video of the planing was cool, but almost made me squint to keep from getting chips in my eyes! :) Looking forward to the next video. Thanks.
Hah, it's funny how that happens! Glad you enjoyed the video, stay tuned!
Loveing this ship renovation!! 🤙
Thanks!
Great videos! What’s the plan to correct the grading outside?! Seems like it should be a top priority?
Really enjoy your videos. Just a point. If you are getting moisture on that back wall. All that plastic sheet is going to do is condense it and it will collect in the floor and rot the base of your stud wall. It needs airflow.
There's no actual water coming in, mostly just trying to help with humidity. This is a vapor retarder, meaning moisture can still permeate, it just does so more slowly.
@@craftedworkshop Great. I didn't want to come across as critical or negative. too much of that on here.
No problem, didn’t take it that way! Love to hear feedback and ideas as long as they’re constructive. I’m definitely not an expert here, learning stuff every day!
The sun disappears on the horizon.

another reason for getting rid of the windows is, a massive reduction of spider webs, i built a 40 x 30 x10 foot garage, and no windows I think there are about 3 small spiderwebs in the whole garage in the 6 years since it was built
08:20
The structural engineer probably called for a double top plate because the building is old and the joists would probably not line up with the studs which would cause load transfer issues (sagging). A double top plate solves this by distributing whatever falls on the upper top plate across the lower top plate evenly.
Could be wrong but this is my guess
Awesome dude! It’s coming on so nicely 🤙🏻
Thanks!
Joist hangers on studs never seen that
Loving seeing this process man so cool!
Glad you enjoy it!
You could’ve framed those walls on the ground and stood them up, since the studs and two plates are 1.5” shorter than the overall due to the double top plate (which is literally not doing anything). Just nail the upper top plate to the bottom of the joists, frame the wall, then stand it up and slide it under the upper top plate. If it’s tight, coerce it with a nine pound hammer. I’m surprised Jason didn’t suggest that
That would assume the slab is perfectly flat, and it’s far from it. I think this was a lot simpler considering we would have had to done a lot of planing and scribing to fit the walls.
@@craftedworkshop that’s understandable
looking great!
Looking good!
You guys did Amazing work!
Thank you so much!
Totally worth the wood shavings for that shot.
The screws used on the ladder blocking: which ones did you use please. I have some blocking to install and getting 411 on which ones and why. NOT asking for a friend. 😉
Looking good! To ask stupid question: Is mold buildup behind the vapor block an issue? I guess it's sealed, so it doesn't matter, but just curious to hear from an expert. Thanks!
It shouldn't encourage mold, as this is a vapor retarder, meaning it just slows the transmission of moisture. Completely blocking it would likely lead to mold.
Están realizando un excelente trabajo en la renovación se agradece que comparta los videos saludos desde chile 👊 👌🏻 👏
that shot was worth you getting covered in sawdust...TWICE!
😂 glad to hear it!
Are you going to insulate the walls as well? will help you keep down the heating and cooling costs over time while you have easy access.
That’s the plan!
Awesome perks in this cool video :-)
After watch your video,,their video should pop out any second..
why the dubble sill, thats so you can place the studes where you want them , so it correct and the right way to do it since the weight can be cuite alot from above good for you
you could give these windows to the Perkin Crew haha
Hah, I don't think they'd want them!
Good
Coming together buddy looks great 👍
Thanks Mike!
Gotta say really nervous about the grade sending water into the wall where the windows were. That really needs some serious attention. Best plan is not to depend on just the water proofing but fix the outside problem too.
I specifically said I was planning to do that a little later in the video. I’m waiting on a professional for that, I’m at the mercy of their schedule.
Would like to know about the engineering on that wall with joist hangers on the floor plate and the double top plate. Is the point to keep the concrete wall from bowing more?
Exactly! I talked about it at the end of Part 1 : ruclips.net/video/8UTJg0-qbX4/видео.html
I'm surprised you guys didn't stagger your top plates.
More slowmo dust……”It’s in my mouth!”. I’ll leave that one alone….. I love the progress, keep ‘em coming.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Recent subscriber. Got here from Perkins Builder Brothers.
Welcome!
Like other people have said, these videos are too short, and too far apart. It makes me feel like an addict going too long without my fix!! :D
Hah, one week is barely enough time to get the editing done! You guys can just rewatch the previous episodes 😁
Keep it up! Love the content
Thanks Kyle!
It's good to see the Perkins guys in action. However, they don't seem to share many "pro tips" as they normally do. You might add that to the contract next time you hire them 🙂
Hah, these guys work so darn fast it’s hard to slow them down enough to get them on camera 😂
Great slomo.
Thanks, glad it was worth it!
Cool cool cool 😀
Thanks!
Just a query mid video; you mentioned that the wall that was allowing moisture in was fixed inside. Are you going to dig and drain on that side?
Yup, will be working on the outside soon!
true chesed Hashem has given you with this shop cap
why didn't you stagger the seams of the double top plate?
@1:54 I think running zip tape on the bottom of the pressure treated board would be cheap insurance? I believe Kyle/RR Bldg does that.
I’ve seen him do it on non-treated stuff but I think it’d be overkill on this stuff since it’s rated for ground contact.
Good call on the windows, they needed to go.
What about some sort of double pane opaque window setup for natural light but less intensity?
I could have done a lot of things to filter the light, but it's next to impossible to buy windows in a reasonable time frame right now, so I went this route.
@@craftedworkshop that makes a lot of sense. We just finished a building here and windows delivery times were atrocious.
@@craftedworkshop that makes so much more sense. Getting rid of the natural light might be worth it if it could delay you literally months
👍👍👍👍
How much would you want for the old heater?
Dang.. is he opening up a workshop or a bakery? 🎂👀
Question, won't it be better to close the window with brick blocks? Any specific reason you went the other option?
Definitely could have gone that route but it would have taken a lot longer and I already had the materials I needed on hand for this.
@@craftedworkshop that makes total sense. Appreciate the response. 👍
What type of sealant was used on heater vent pipe hole and around window framing plates? Just silicone?
The pipe hole was Lexel and the framing plates was Titebond Duramaster.
In Italy they let you close your windows with the concrete blocks
Căn nhà trở nên đẹp hơn
I. Like. It
i watched all 3 videos
Cool Video. Billy J... Queensland, Australia.
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
👍
I was looking to see if you posted this morning. But I was like "there's no way to get another shop video out in a week, that's too much work"
Got another one coming next week!
Imo would have been better to cement the window openings and the vent accesses closed instead of using treated wood. Probably would have been cheaper too.
I already had these materials on hand leftover from previous projects. Can’t beat free!
Why don’t you use studs in between?
So… would you say that you went… to the window / to the wall?
😂 the Perkins crew LOVES that joke
There is no crack program or folder on the set-up exe program
Pulmonologists are having mini strokes watching this.
Why use joist hangers? Doesn't seem like they are doing anything in that application
Guessing it adds strength to the connection between the plates and the studs to resist the pressure coming in on the block walls.
Watch the video again.... Fully explained
What’s the name of the intro song please!!!!!
Gotta over lap them plates son
How sure are you that the vapor retardant isn’t going to condensate on the backside between the block. I’m sure you’ve done your research but putting ‘plastic’ over anything below grade scares me! Great video tho!
there is no point placing the vapor retardant on the inside, especially if you cut it off where he did
if you didn't want the windows , you should have filled with cinder blocks.
Check this build out! @
going from NG to electric heat? you're going to regret that. At least leave the NG as supplemental heat. Hope you're down south! Also, why didn't they stagger the top plates and have the plate break in the middle of a stud?
I’m in the south east and will be setting up solar, so don’t think I’ll regret it!
He's going to install mini splits, which are heat pumps and air conditioning. They are very efficient as well as very quiet, an important consideration for making videos.
Yup! Plus I’m planning to set up solar, so I can power them for free. No supporting fracking too.
@@stevenfoster9304 You can't have a heat pump and air conditioner in one. It's one or the other. You probably mean that the heat pump, cools and heats.
@@denniscooper6328 Yes, I am well aware of that, I just wanted you to be aware that he has heating and cooling with high efficiency and quiet operation and does not need the noisy and inefficient gas blaster...
No, the shot wasn’t worth getting covered in sawdust for. lol
It was 😂
When I finally build my dream shot the only windows will be north facing. Typical artist studios are built that way.
Where do you get all your money
Why the vapor retarder on one wall? Can't the vapor come in through the corners?
I specifically addressed this in the video. 😊
Getting rid of the windows was really sad to see
that was fast
