Interesting facts: Shawm and Sackbutts were “outdoor” instruments in medieval and renaissance times. These were plays outside at feasts, religious events, tournaments and parades. Recorders, lutes and viols were considered “indoor” instruments.
Played at masques, banquets and other indoor events.
If you have some link to refer this information it will be wonderfull.
I thank you for sharing your information. In this video a there's no sackbut in use, it is in fact a slide trumpet, the predecessors of the sackbut
I don't have a source to this information, but it makes perfect sense to me. Shawm and sackbut (or the slide trumpet played here) are much louder instruments than recorder or lute. String instruments don't lend themselves to well for playing outdoors, the gut strings really react to changing moisture in the air.
If memory serves, it wasn't strictly indoors/outdoors, but more of soft/loud (bas/haut). Instruments were sometimes used for both contexts, and I think the shawm and dulcian were both like this.
Regardless, it is really cool how this all was the case 🙂

A Catholic church in my Midwest neighborhood has two niches on the side of the choir loft. I learned on a Renaissance-music CD that those niches held a town's waits (i.e, outdoor instruments) for important masses such as Christmas and Easter.
I love this version SO much - I have to play it every few days for a "fix" !!
I'm in a concert band where we fight so hard to get our 2 (modern / conservatory) oboes in tune. Here you have 3 ancient oboes (4 holes each, I think), and you are nearly perfectly in tune the whole time! How!?!?!
7 holes each ;) Tuning is always a big thing. We spent a lot of time on this in the past 🤓😀
It’s called a shawm. It’s the sound of the Middle Ages you always hear minstrels playing in movies and tv.
I thought you were in tune the whole time.
Good music never gets old.
Excellent !
By far the best sackbut playing I've ever heard.
that's a slide trumpet, not a sackbut, the main difference is that the slide on a sackbut is a U-shaped slide, meaning you effectively have double the lengthening effect compared to a slide trumpet where you lengthen a single tube
@@jakobbruhspenning A slide trumpet is in fact a sackbut. Look into the etymology. And you’re wrong about this one. It is playing in trombone range.
@@richsackett3423 a trombone isn't a range, as there are tenor, bass but also alto and even soprano trombones
@@jakobbruhspenning I played trombone for 25 years. Shut up.
@@richsackett3423 also, if you look at the description, it states: "Rémi Lécorché: trompette à coulisse" not "Rémi Lécorché: sacqueboute". French has a different term for slide trumpets than for sackbut and I think the uploaded of this video would know better than you what instruments they play.
I understand you thinking I use slide trumpet as a misnomer for (alto) trombone but I in fact am refering to an instrument which was a precursor to the sackbut.
Wonderful ! These old instruments have such character 😍😍
Nous sommes fascinés par les temps médiévaux. Merci pour cette mise en ligne !
A piece that is totally new to me, done superbly by a great loud band.
~But the drummer is faking it ...
Excellent music, superb artists! I enjoy this period music. Thank you for this presentation.
Hahaha! Such joy! I really enjoyed that :-)
Beautiful sound, beautiful instruments
Well that is an unusual performance by skilled musicians using instruments I am unfamiliar with, nice one.
That was amazing!!!
MAGNIFIQUE !!!
You don't tape your feet to this kind of music, you dip your knees. Very impressive and lovely.
Votre `'Athmosphere'' est parfait ! Merci beaucoup 🙂
Wonderful!
*Her: "What do you do in your spare time?"*
*Him: "I play the sackbut."*
*Her: "I'm calling the cops!"*
👮🏻♀️📯👮🏻♀️
😂
but that's a slide trumpet, not a sackbut
@@jakobbruhspenning Yeah, but she called the cops because she thought he called her a "slack butt."
J'adore cette musique ....très beau ❤ merci ! Vous êtes formidables 😊
Fantastic. 🎉
Superbe !

Music to my heart ❤️
Wow! That is just great.
I’d love to see @TrentHamilton review the trompete à coulisse.
Very nice!
Excellent. Such outstanding performers. ZI love the mellow sounds.
Bem legal, gostei... parabéns
Nice young guys, music and place that’s the artistic elements thanks ❤
Splendid!
Don't get me wrong, I love modern convenience, but imagine living in a world and time where the loudest thing you might hear is thunder. The music is lovely and I wonder if it sounded moreso to the medieval ear.
Well done! Loved it!
That really is interesting. What a unique sound!
Super!
magnifique.
fantastique!!
"Who's making that racket" can be taken in 2 ways.
Very cool.
a slide trombone in 1392, I am very surprised by this music-historical sensation!
this is in fact a slide trumpet, not a slide trombone, the difference is that on a trombone your slide is u-shaped, making it effectively double the length of this straight slide
Nice performance!
It's my first time to see the instruments.
I enjoyed the music.
Thank you for sharing.
Outstanding
WOW!
Awesome!
On en redemanderait !
Welch gar edle Kläng‘ und gar trefflich gespielte Musike!
Hot damn, you guys made it groovy!
Super ❤️
Great you're back I loved the music on the other channel!
Echte Schöne Alte Musik auf echten alten Instrumenten von echten Jungen Menschen. Musik braucht keine Massenschau, nur Klang! Chapeau! Merci!

Que formós!
Modern from medieval French fanfare de troubadour
Lindo lindo!!
Bravo.
OK, Thank you
( San Luis)
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I don’t know why but this physically hurts my ears.
¡ delicioso ¡
Renaissance Dixieland jazz
👏
Are the different instruments tuned to different chords? Fascinating.
Who knows; but the drummer is not playing what is being heard--it's shameful.
Hoomeyow!!
That was too short 🙂
It would benefit met me, and probably many others, if you could identify the instruments being played - Thanks!
Apparently, nobody read the video's description.
It's so frustrating that people try to correct you when you correct their wrong use of sackbut!
Probably filmed somewhere in France
Eu amei
Can't they stand still? They are moving like leaves in the wind.
I suspect the video does little justice to how loud those instruments are!
If someone were to shoot a movie recreating that period of time, I hope they hire you to for the sound-track. Even the producers of some of the swashbuckling shorts I've seen on RUclips could do better by employing period bands, like yours, instead of falling back on the same, boring temp-track sound that lacks a sense of time and place.
now I'm hungry for a turkey leg
