The guitarist, Wilko Johnson, was formerly an English teacher. He was an integral part of the UK blues band, Dr. Feelgood, who remain one of my favourite ever live bands. Sadly Wilko is no longer with us. But I used to sometimes see him in one of his favourite haunts, a music pub in Southend on Sea, only a few miles from where I live.
Davey Payne (sax) is the only member who was with Ian from the beginning with Kilburn and the High Roads. Blockheads was formed primarily from studio session musicians to record his first album with stiff records, New Boots and Panties, but worked together so tightly (Norman Watt-Roy top bassist) they continued touring as one of the best live bands in the UK at the time. The music was known as New Wave at the time, an offshoot of punk, and the Blockheads soon became Stiffs premier act overshadowing Elvis Costello (much to his consternation). I consider Ian as the finest songwriter/poet England's produced and New Boots and Panties is in my top 3 albums of all time (every track a banger). I cried when he died but at least I got to see him several times in his prime. An excellent biopic of his life called Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll with Andy Serkis playing him brilliantly, is well worth watching if you can find it. Peace and love.
I'm now transported back to the golden days when Ian used to come down to my home town, Bournemouth, to the pub and club we all went to. He was always accompanied by his mate Pete Rush aka "The sulphate strangler". He looked out for Ian. He was a complete lunatic, but with a heart of gold. Just don't piss him off.😉 Great memories.
Wilko Johnson from Dr Feelgood on guitar. Check out a song called Roxcette by Dr Feelgood. In Dury was a fantastic lyricist, a real wordsmith. His band were also great musicians, a real band of gypsies, a gang that were all unit together
Fantastic stuff! Saw The Blockheads (minus Ian, obviously) a couple of years ago. Still exceptionally good. Norman Watt-Roy is most likely the tightest funkiest bassist I've ever seen live.
The vibe on this reminded me of the band Wishbone for some reason . I don't know anything about this group at all. Cool to check out. Here's a classic-sounding track from Blue Oyster Cult for Dave to give a listen to, which I've never heard before but features some really good jam style, almost Grateful Dead-ish guitars, cool evocative lyrics, and was given the new video treatment. It's the tune, "Then Came The Last Days of May" ruclips.net/video/eJ7Y_dM3NT8/видео.html
I'm well impressed that Dave knew Ian Dury brilliant. Thanks for showing Dave the video. And RIP Ian Dury and Wilko Johnson 👏👏👏👏🎸🎸🎸🎸
Excellent version

Really dig the punk vibes. I started to appreciate the genre more and more over the last few years. Very entertaining. Thanks guys.
My fave Ian Dury song is Grape and Grain. And I also recommend one of the guitarist's songs, Dr. Feelgood - Roxette
