They are contained within hollowed out sections of the robot. When makuta corrupted mata nui with the virus, he crashed on the ocean moon. The crash dislodged some islands from inside the body that floated up to the surface (still attatched with umbilical cords) and the rest of the islands formed on the robots features (face, limbs, etc.) above the water line because of cloaking tech.
The ecosystems or islands representing geographical organs of mata nui spirit absolutely love the imagery
