You underestimate how much you are appreciated Andy. Love that you are starstruck around Steffie😁. She actually competes for my heart with Roger - tough ask but she's right up there. But your popularity is based as much on your personal appeal - humour & not suffering fools gladly or in any way at all- as your tennis and particularly tennis commentary. Just wish we could hear you in the UK.

Totally with you on Stefanie Graf. Watched her entire career and was awestruck. Supremely talented both mentally and physically. There's always been an air of mystery about her. The golden slam is one of her main tennis legacies, but the most Graf thing about it is that there's a seldom mentioned Wimbledon doubles title that year as well.

I am from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It’s located in Central Asia. And I can second that, sadly, a lot of shady stuff was and (I believe) still happening on Futures/Challenger Level in general. There is a big problem with lack of sponsorships for players, no sustainable environment in case of health problems( traumas) and many more underlying issues. Thank you for making those topics visible, many more hours should be devoted to bring awareness. Thank you!

Always loved Andy's commentary on Tennis Channel and really enjoy his new podcast. An hour and 7 minutes flew by. I agree that Jon should be on as often as possible. Andy's tackling the right balance of topics. I was fascinated by the "super tour" conversation and found it complex and nuanced. As a long time tennis fan though it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if the tours "jump in bed" with the Saudi's, given their human rights atrocities. Great discussion though and will now be looking forward to each subsequent podcast. Great job Andy !!!

This space really has been missing somebody like you commenting on the game, I sincerely hope this project grows in the direction of something like JJ Reddick’s coverage of the NBA, you’re every bit as good as he is. I love the podcast, thank for doing this Andy! I really enjoyed the discussion about Saudi Arabia and the sports gambling- they're important discussions for professional sports. It interests me how there is such a pull between the commercial and athletic aspects of this sport.
As a new follower to Tennis, I wonder if you could possibly discuss about how they schedule matches in tournaments. I'm confused as to the odd and late start times for some matches. Following the AO, I saw that Medvedev had alot of late starts and late nights and he mentioned it quite a bit during the tournament.
How many tennis players get shafted by match times and lack of sleep like this and don't play their best? At what point do tennis players get fed up with scheduling and demand better because its a factor in losing/winning matches? What's stopping better schedules from happening?

  • @rolanddecarli6938

Andy, this is great! Thank's. I really appreciate your point of view. In particular, the Saudi issue gives me anxiety. Of course, the values of inclusion and freedom are important, but I believe that's not the only problem. Sport is part of the essence of our nations. Everyone can access it by entering the competition. This is how a sport like tennis, starting from a handful of nations, expanded, becoming a worldwide phenomenon, gradually involving more and more countries. And so far, nations have risen to the challenge by building a movement of players, technicians, enthusiasts, and fans around this sport.
While the Saudis are trying to create a new context for sport, based on their capitalist strength, devoid of economic rationality. The experience with golf is striking.

    RE: Your New Racquet Choice
This will most likely be an unpopular suggestion, however, I will make a brief argument for Wilson.
Yes, the racquet brand of your nemesis: The man who made ten years of your professional career extremely difficult.
Maybe not the exact same racquet as his, but one that suits your game obviously. From an American company no less (yes, I know it's a loose descriptor).
Maybe you've already decided against it, but what a beautiful choice it could be to wield the W to find something new and creative in your game now.
I say grab an old 95 sqin graphite/fiberglass model with a modern hybrid string bed and see what happens.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you for your contribution to tennis. Cheers

Hi Andy. You make some fair points about Venus earning the right to be awarded wildcards into slams. Here is what seemed to be your main arguments : 1) She has star power and therefore can contribute to tickets being sold and 2) She played really well in the lead up to Wimbledon beating Giorgi and taking a set off Ostapenko. You could also add that she has worked really hard to achieve what she has achieved and has given so much to the game so how can she not deserve wildcards once her ranking falls off?
All fair points! But with regards to the first argument, while I certainly agree that there is no downside to having a Williams sister in your draw, I think the upside might be exaggerated. (To be honest, this point can apply to any former great champion who has fallen in the rankings, not just Venus). It seems to me that tennis is a sport that moves on fast and realistically someone like a Venus who is way past her best would only be playing in the first round (maybe second with a very favorable draw) and there tends not to be any shortage of choice with regards to talent and star power in those first few days of tennis. Would people go see Venus if she was in the draw? For sure! Would they be put off from going to see the tennis if she wasn't? I doubt it. Especially with the level that she has bringing to the court for a while now. Which brings me to the second point.
Sure, in those matches where she beat Giorgi and pushed Ostapenko in the tournament just before Wimbledon, Venus demonstrated a level worthy of the main draw of a slam. But she could barely win a match in the 12 months preceding it. And you would have to admit, that it's got to be tough for players who have been grinding the circuit, playing a lot more tennis and getting their ranking close but not quite close enough, to see someone like Venus get rewarded with another wildcard. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that there is merit in giving former champions wildcard when their ranking drops as a reward for their hard work and what they have given the game. However, it leads to an interesting question I'd like to ask you! What do you think is a fair cut off point? How far do you think a former champions level and ranking should drop before you would say ' they don't deserve that wildcard'? Outside the top 200? Or even if their level and ranking hovers close to the main draw cut off for a sustained period, how many wildcards do you think is justified before it becomes unfair? Because you could have a challenger level player who has worked his/her socks off for years but might not just have had the talent to crack the top 100 but got very close. The great champions are rich so a wildcard means very little to them financially but a spot in the main draw can be life changing money for a challenger level player who is very close and who knows how much that money could help them make even more improvements! I guess that's where people are coming from when they get annoyed seeing great champions get numerous wildcards above players who are ranked ahead of them. I see the merits in giving wildcards to great champions but I am still curious as to what you think the cut off point is!

Totally agree that aging pros like Murray and Venus should play as long as they want to, but I’m not crazy about them being gifted wild cards to the majors. I understand Venus drawing fans to smaller events, but NY isn’t hurting for ticket sales. As a WC at last years Open, Williams was ranked 411. I would rather the $81,500 1st round paycheck (and the experience that came with it) have gone to an up-and-coming, future Venus Williams.

Was Andy Roddick also a CIA asset during his time dating Mandy Moore? I hope Andy's answer isn't something along the lines of "I'd tell you but then I have to kill you".
Seriously though, great episode. I was wondering if you guys would ever talk about the whole deal with Saudi Arabia & tennis, but you just dove right in there head first and with a very reasonable, balanced take. Loved it! Def interested in nuanced discussion of Public Investment Fund involvement into tennis? Tennis doesn’t need a fracturing in sport

You should have a show on the prospects of making a career playing tennis. Would you put your kid through the grind and gruel of playing tennis knowing well that a 500th best baseball or a football player will make few millions while most players over 200 in tennis might not even make anything meaningful.

Brilliant suggestion! Please dedicate a podcast to this, Andy!
Going pro: is it worth it? The economics of it, the real prognosis and career trajectory of a non-prodigy.

    Hey Andy,
Can you ask Federer if he heard my drunk ass screaming at him to do the SABR from the stands during the Laver Cup in Chicago? He moved way back after I yelled at him to do it for the 20th time.
Or you can just give me his number.
    Thanks

Great show, Bring in other RUclipsrs/Podcasters and grow the whole space. Talk more Tennis go more in depth like how you talked about Coco last time. I know its hard but less politics and more sports unless they intersect for some reason most people sick of politics and you lose half the audience either way

I appreciate the take that it’s not black and white. What I don’t appreciate is the blatant hypocrisy of players and organizations who always use their power for political purposes when it suits them, but back down in the cases where it matters most. Navratilova and Evert have taken the right stance. But don’t underestimate the cowardice and greed and ignorance of athletes. The top atp players are like toys plucked out of a toy box for wealthy corrupt oligarchs. It’s sad and I’m quickly losing my respect for the sport I once loved. I will still play, but I think tennis is choosing the wrong road at the moment.

Gotta say - I really love angry Andy. Funny how in a way the "he should retire" spiel kinda circles back to people telling Novak (who won 3/4 majors last year) it's maybe time to retire (!?)

Rafa's been called out by a fair few of his own fans for taking on this ambassador role. But the discontent will probably blow over unfortunately.
