Very balanced view of his life and career, many thanks. His wife and daughter also wrote "Chinese Gastronomy", a superb treatise on Chinese cookery theory, though the recipes are often overly complex (for female households with too much time on their hands), and it skips several important regional cuisines.

Glad you liked it. You know we were going to mention more about Lin's wife and family but it was really starting to run long so we just left it out. Yeah, Ms. Liao, along with her daughter, had quite a career with their cookbooks.

@@ChinaHistoryPodcast oh, and meant to ask - why so down on "The Good Earth" (the book, not the film)? Could understand if you'd panned her awkward, biblically-syntaxed translation of 水滸傳, but surely TGE deserves points for its believable presentation of peasant China in the last years of the Qing?

@@huzhuiwei I was very impacted by TGE when I read it back in the 70's. But today it sort of seems mildly antiquarian and I doubt it would do as well in 2021 as it did in 1931.

@@ChinaHistoryPodcast the era it portrayed is pretty antiquarian nowadays :-)

"between laughter and tears" 1945....very important for the time we live in ...
Maybe that is why he was "pushed" aside, from the west...?!

How dare he try to find broad commonalities among the Chinese to help the west understand his people better! What a bigot! Seriously though, modern people are so ridiculous with this hyper sensitive faux morality. It’s just the contemporary version of White Man’s Burden. Loosen up.
