This is probably the most informative cost-to-build shop video I've seen on RUclips so far. If you're concerned about your videos running long, just do your videos in parts. Part 1,part 2..
Thanks for this. Perfect detail and length. I paid more for my shop of similar size 35x70x16 but it was turn key. I always felt I overpaid a bit but I just needed it done so it was worth it. after watching this i think our costs were very similar minus the labor i paid for. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching ! That actually makes me feel good about what I spent too . And yeah I can totally understand just needing it done, there were times I had wished I just paid someone on some of the stuff just because it would have been much easier. Thanks again for watching!
@stephendodson8302 $66 per sq ft. There were some overages because of some city related cost but wasn't related to the building cost. If I were to include all that it would be $72.
@stephendodson8302 you're welcome. There used to be other builders in town that I had quotes from that would have cost me less but issues with the city cause all them to exit the market. I didn't have any competing options.
Great info. Thanks for putting this all together and sharing it. Working towards a 25x40 with a large semi enclosed covered parking area and hoping to keep it under 100k all in. Red iron, all metal construction, radiant heat inside. Seems realistic after watching this. Doing a lot of the work ourselves as well.
You're welcome, and thanks for watching! That will be nice ! Yeah I'd think you could do it for that with a little better planning then I did . Good luck with your new shop and thanks for watching!
You can Aleah go with a metal tubular company instead of a red iron which would save you on cost if you live in the east coast I can help you with that
Thanks ! I'll try and start editing the longer more detailed one soon but after re-recording this to make a shorter version I might just trash the stuff I did the first time a re record the longer one now that I have better ideas on how to organize it a little better. Thanks again for watching!
Thank you for sharing your build costs. Its hard to estimate those especially with all the unknowns, or I forgots that will always pop up. I would definitely recommend having more back-fill around the shop. I have a garage that was built up similar that they put a sidewalk around with a strong slope right at its edge, and over its life the sidewalks have dipped significantly and exposed the foundation due to just the rain washing out a little dirt here and there over the years. (I can say with the other work quality it probably wasn't compacted right either) If I were to fix or build new I would have at least 5' of flat (with grade for drainage away) at the minimum, and then fill enough of the slope to mow without feeling like your going to fall over, or have the mower roll back over you (hand mowing)
Your welcome and thanks! It really is , there are so many little things that don't get thought of. Yeah that was something I originally wanted to have a few more loads of fill/topsoil brought in to grade the hill out more but couldn't get my dirt guys to bring any when I was trying to button up the outside for the final inspection but that's something I'd like to do this spring and at the same time run all my gutter drains under ground down to the bottom of the slope also. And I'd like to do like a 4' or so path of blue stone around the back and side against the building too. Thanks again for watching !
I found an alternative for overhead lights, you might be interested in. I got a 10-pack of LED lights, from the "Jungle Site", for about $100. I think they were Benelli's , or something like that. They came with the connectors, to couple them together, pig-tails, and switched plug pig-tails, along with mounting clips. I used to have 8' florescent bulbs, in my 30'x40' garage, with 10' ceilings. They were ok-ish. But, the led's made a huge difference. They were real easy to replace and a whole lot less expensive to run. just a thought. Nice building.
Thanks for the info , yeah leds are much nicer light then florescent. All my lights I have are led also ! Thanks for watching and again thanks for the info I need to redo my old garage for my wife's work area so I'll look into them for that space.
Great breakdown.......I had to find my readers haha. Im building the same dimension garage and this helps a lot. Wasnt expecting the concrete work to be that much, but it is what it is.
@lear60man thanks ! Haha sorry about that I needed to get a white board so yall could see what I was writing better. If I hadn't over dug my footers and everything and just built them to spec I could have saved a good bit on the concrete cost . Thanks for watching and good luck on your building !
@@kenschopshop Thanks man. This is my first time doing something like this and just put in the order for the building last week. Mine is a 40x60 with an overhang so there will be a little extra cost for the concrete there. My problem is im trying to estimate everything by googling costs which never works. At least now im in the ballpark of expectations. I made a deal with my buddy (AC contractor) to help with the electrical stuff and he will get a bay to store/work on his hot rod. Plus it puts eyes on the project when im not around.
Awesome building! I started watching for the mezzanine content and had to go back and watch them all. Great detail on everything! Much appreciated! My building isn’t going to be quite as big as yours but the sidewalls are going to be same height so I wanted to take advantage of some of that space. Great job on everything!
Thanks, I really appreciate that . Yeah, that was a major reason I went with the 16' walls was to be able to add more useable space with the footprint I had . Thanks again for watching and the kind words!
Thx for sharing your build and costs. I just finished my 24x32x10 with 8/12 pitch scissor trusses to allow my lift. It's stick built by me. Insulated R15 walls, R30 ceiling, OSB walls, 24k mini split, 9k lift came in at just under $44k. 5" 3500# monolithic slab was $10.5k and I hired the sheeted and architectural shingled roof for $6800. I did use lifetime guarantee Sherwin Williams paint. 15 gal for $1,200 on sale @ 30% off. Yes. HD paint only would have cost 1/3 as much, but it took 4 coats to cover the wooden carriage doors,10x9, and they don't look as good as the 2 coats of SW on the rest of the shop! Will have to go back and watch the playlist. THX, again!
Thanks, I appreciate you watching and sharing the info on your shop , it helps others that are looking to build to compare or find more reasonable options for them so i appreciate that ! sounds like a nice space ! Awesome, thanks again!
my dream build is in the forest, with all the animals and a garage with mazenine and an office, its pleasing to watch nicely built spaces like this, i just want to find peace in my homestead now that i am more than half through my life. just want to leave my city bungalow behind to the kids and hopefully spend rest of the days working and living at the farm
I’m a GC is S.FL so I don’t know anything:) but on the paint. I use Porter (similar to SW) and a better paint you will use less paint to cover the same. Less paint means less work. It kinda works out. Better paint has more zink (opaque) in it I believe. There is a reason pros don’t buy HD paint.. they can and HD offers so many deals.. this is to help the next guy out.. great video buddy
Thanks, yeah I used to always use duron paint back when I did remodeling work years ago but once SW bought them out we stopped, I was never a big fan of SW paint but their higher end lines do cover well but their prices are crazy, I started off painting the osb on the mezzanine with SW paint but it still needed 3 coats to get the covrage I wanted so I decided to try the e600 exterior semi gloss paint from HD and it covers just the same and was under a 3rd the cost as the SW so I just stuck with getting the rest from hd . Thanks again for watching and the input, it's all greatly appreciated!
I Just built a 60x60x16 in NC. So, 1200sq ft larger. I have 140k in the building like it sits. Pad, building, R13 insulation, erection, two insulated 12x12 doors with side openers, electrical, 3 Mitsubishi 30k btu mini splits. Overhead and wall lighting, And Air system. This doesn’t include lifts or any of the equipment. Only thing I did was the electrical with the help of friends. 200 amp service, 54 slot panel, 12 230v circuits for lifts, mini splits, welders, plasma cutters, etc. Everything else was paid labor. Your equipment rentals are almost as much as I paid for the erection of the entire building. I also paid 23k for flatwork and the concrete pads at 6” thick. I used a foundation company. You lost out on those two things for sure. Don’t get me wrong, I ran into snags as well. But for 33% more building and at about the same price?
Yeah, I definitely over spent on some things for sure, especially the rentals . I later found a company that rents equipment about 40 min away that is much cheaper. Sounds like you got a pretty nice setup. My total cost did include the lift and materials for the mezzanine and lower walls but yeah like you said I definitely could have saved some in areas . Thanks for watching and congrats on your building it sounds nice!
@@timhilton5096 I don’t know any red iron companies but I do work for a metal building company that does almost the same just different design and we offer 60 ft span buildings as well if you’re interested and they could be more affordable than a red iron
OK sounds good I might actually re-record the stuff for a longer version just to better organize the info and try to make it as informative as I can . Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Nice shop! Since you’re into mini trucks a buddy of mine owned the mini truck “Last Look” approx. 20 years ago. It apparently found a great home in Arizona and lives on to this day.
I built the same style metal building but instead of an office I built an apartment with outdoor patio stairs to access the apartment from the outside and rent it for $1000 a month
@PROAmateur01 are you trying to use the whole building as a living space ? But yeah I get that there's a lot of people showing finished barndominiums but not a ton showing how they finished them and the ones that do everyone seems to use different methods and are usually finishing them to different styles to suit their needs/vision. It might not be helpful for what your looking to do but I do have some older videos that I tried to show some of my methods to build mine out for my needs . Thanks for watching and if I can answer anything else I'll try!
Thanks ! And that's awesome! Yeah mine got delayed a few times also . We'll good luck on getting yours finished and an early congrats on it . Thanks again for watching!
My surveyor said that we should contact them to come out and make sure that the anchor bolts were in the correct place. For $225 they do 2 visits, 1 before concrete and 1 during concrete. They will make sure that the anchor bolts are within 1/4 inch. I have watched several videos where they installed one set of anchors more than 2 feet off.
@mikegrok that's not bad honestly, mist of the concrete guys I talked to didn't want anything to do with setting the bolts where they needed to go and that was one of my biggest stresses was making sure they were right , luckily in my case I got them spot on after checking them a bunch of times. Thanks for watching and the info about the surveyor I didn't even think that might have been an option for some .
Thanks, I appreciate that, and thanks for watching! Yeah I wish I could afford to do it now , it would be great to have another 30x60 area of covered parking
Thanks for the informative video. What size power did you run to the shop? I am also looking at building a 40x60X16. I was thinking about running 400Amp service back to the shop. Definitely gave me a good idea. Being that I am in Utah I am leaning towards radiant floors so I will be a lot more in my heating and cooling budget but having a comfortable shop in the winter is priority for a functional shop. I was guessimating about $150k-$160K for my build. I am not sure about steel, or a pole barn, or stud construction yet. Still pricing it out and weighing options.
@Datsmepepe your welcome, and thanks for watching! So I have a 200a service, that was the biggest they would allow me to get and I had to pay just to have them upgrade the transformer on the pole that's suppling that . I could have done more but they wanted triple the money and a detailed list of equipment I planned to use to prove I needed more then the 200 . For me the 200 is plenty but I don't have a bunch of big machines, so ... radiant floors would definitely be nice ! I think either choice pole or red iron will be great , both have their pros and cons but in the end I'm very happy I went with the red iron especially for the extra ceiling height not having to run trusses but if I were to have done a pole barn I definitely would have done sizzor trusses or steel trusses to get away from a flat ceiling. Well good luck on your building and thanks again for watching!
Love the vids I can't wait to get my shop up have the concrete done and the 40x60 red iron shop is just laying there. But ran out of money to get it put up. so hopefully in a few years I'll get it put up
Thanks bro I appreciate it ! That's got to be hard knowing you're so close to having it but hopefully you'll be able to get it up soon . Thanks again for watching!
Thanks I appreciate it ! Not going to lie for years I thought I'd never be able to but then things kind of worked out and sold some of my toys and made it happen so hopefully you can soon too ! Thanks for watching!
I did a 40x60x14 2/12 roof. 2 insulated 12x12. Site prep myself. Turn key 145k. Just building on steel, lights, door openers electric epoxy floors, 3 ton ac, 15k amgo lift, all extra.
Thanks I appreciate it ! So it was a little bit of both , at the time I did it intrest rates were still low so I did a cash out refi on what I thought was going to be enough then I sold and flipped a few vehicles to pay for the rest ... so technically, everyone I paid was either cash or direct transfer from my bank account, but I did get a large majority of the money from the refi
Thanks! Hahaha that bike came from my wifes grandmother's that passed last year and it made it's way here with the old fridge but my 9 year old actually loves using it while she's out in the shop with us . Thanks for watching!
Nice work. Every site and persons needs are different, & sometimes we learn as we go. I think you did a bang up job and you have inspired me as I work out my details by looking at vids like yours. Bring on the full length 😁. If u had it to do over again what would you change or aadd?
Thanks. I appreciate that, and thanks for watching! So that's a tough question. Some quick response would be I wish I hadn't over dug my footers to use a little less concrete and hired a different concrete finisher in hopes of having a smoother floor . But after thinking on it for a few hours now and I also just got asked another question on a different video that made me think about it more one of my biggest pet peeves is the wind load cables on the 2 side walls (60' walls ) the are out in the I-beams and infront of my wood walls and it makes it a pain to put anything on those walls . Had I thought about it before hand I might have had them design it so the could be on welded brackets on the back of the beams if that was possible or have done that myself before I put the wood up . The other thing I second guessed myself on a few times was building orientation. I like what I have and that's what I wanted and fit my property best but sometimes I wondered if I would have been better off turning it sideways and having 3 bay doors on the 60' wall . But in the end I'm happy with what I have and if money allows in a few years I'd like to build a 30' wide by 60' long lean-to on the left side where I have cars parked beside the building nowand maybe close that in . If I had flipped the orientation, that wouldn't really have been a useful option imo.
Super nice shop man. I’m glad I came upon this vid and saw the black insulation on the roof. I had no idea it was an option and was going to paint it which I would have hated every minute of. How big of a bathroom did you frame up? I’m thinking 8x8 because we may put a stand up shower in because it’s close to the pool, just not sure if I want it that big though as my building will be smaller than yours. Dirt work being done tomorrow so at least it’s starting!
Thanks I really appreciate that ! Yeah when I was looking to build at first I didn't realize it was an option either then stumbled on one picture maverick had on their site of a customer's garage with it and called them back up and asked about it then modified my order and I'm super happy I did . I Framed it up to be 6x8 with a stand up across the end wall of the bathroom. Thanks for watching!
Nice job! I paid $70K for a Mueller 36 x 110 with I beam end walls so I can add covered parking front and back after passing final inspection. Ghost piped a bathroom plumbing under slab. $45K for concrete. Red iron is up and one side wall. Looking for best options for LED lighting now? Primelights stingrays? x20? $$$!
Thanks ! Nice that will be a great size shop ! No experience with those lights but I really have been happy with my hyperlite 150w led lights so far . Thanks for watching!
Newby here, trying to prep for mine… Whats “Ghost piped”? Asking because I’m on well, & plan to build shop/garage 200’ from house & want it to be on its own (solar for electricity & well for water), but trying to figure the plumbing out. I want to run a full bath & would love some insight/ideas if able on how to do it.
@bradmason8334 I don't want to answer for him but I believe he's referring to having everything roughed in to come from outside to its final location in the building but instead of leaving the pipes stubbed up through the concrete 2' to tie in later he's got them covered with something like a coffee can about a 1/4" below the concrete so that way he can pass inspection for the building then add the plumbing after without inspection like I'm doing and just chip the concrete out pull the can and easily connect to the hidden pipes . But for mine I just put my pipes in the floor after the footer inspection and stubbed them up 2' and also outside the building a few feet under ground then did the concrete then for my final inspection I just piled up old insulation around the pipes to hide them lol
Thanks! And you're welcome, thanks for watching! I ordered my door through homedepot.com. I got one of their clopay commercial garage doors. I'll post the link here as its hard to find them, and it only works on a real computer and won't pull up the commercial doors on a mobile device. But if you follow this link on a computer, then put your address in pick your store, then it will give you an option to build your door . Mine is a 14x14 with the highest r value insulation, and I added the high lift track and side opener . If you have any trouble finding them, let me know, and I'll see what I can do to help . Here's the link .... mhddc.clopay.com/#/banner
Great video.when you Build yourself u save and pay in all the ways but get exactly what you want and Better Quality Building. Thanks for sharing the cost of everything. When did you start this project ?
Thanks! And I totally agree. Thanks again, I started getting quotes for the red iron buildings in February or 2022 and placed my order for the building with maverick in the middle or March 22
Man that's a tough question, but yeah the office and mezzanine definitely eats up some useable floor space for vehicles but for me it added that upstairs space and gave me a nice "workshop" type space for benches and tools . As for the rest of my space I feel I could comfortably work on 3 vehicles at one time as long as they weren't getting completely blown apart bur if I was just trying to store cars in the garage like say in case of a storm of going out of town for a while I could probably squeeze 8 midsized cars/trucks if I put one on the lift and one under , probably wouldn't be much room for anything else but as is I could easily put 5-6 vehicles in mine for the night with minimal cleaning or moving stuff. My suggestion is build the biggest you can afford or your area will allow you to build.... like technically mine is just under the maximum sqft my county would allow........ that said I plan to later cover the side parking area that's 30x60 to the left of my shop with a lean-to then close it in later to almost double my closed in sqft but that will be years down the road . Good luck on your shop and hit me up if I can answer anything else and thanks again for watching!
Awesome that the county takes money for employees to live on so you can do something on your property. Sound like most places. What would we do without them ?😊
Nice shop, Thanks for sharing. How big is the Mini splits? and does 2 of them keep the entire shop cool? and is that your heat source too? Thanks for the info.
Thanks I appreciate that! They are both 36k btu (3 ton) units and yes I use them for heating and cooling although this is the first winter . But in the summer I kept them set at 70-72 and at that setting on the hottest days it would creep up to around 74 on the opposite side of the building but I couldn't crank them down and easily drop it to 68 in 30 min or so with them on the turbo mode . And for this winter I have been leaving then set at 64 and when we have gotten in the 20s/lower 30s at night it gets around 58-59 on the opposite side of the building but I can bump them up to say 68 or 70 and within 30-45 min I'm taking my jacket off because it's already feels good especially if I'm doing something. Hope that helps that's what I have experienced so far and for more background on weather for my area I'm in va near Fredericksburg so you can compare your weather to mine . Thanks again for watching !
Super nice shop and I have so many ideas from you. I just built a 40X60x16 exactly like that. Im gonna copy your mezzanine lol. Where did you get your shelves to left as you walk into shop?
Thanks I appreciate that! Nice it's a great size space for sure . Good deal the mezzanine area is one of my favorite upgrades so far for looks and function , not sure if you saw them but I have some more detailed videos of building all that too . I actually found them on marketplace I think the guy I got them from closes out old stores and remoes stuff like that and I think these came from an old bed bath and beyond lol . Thanks again for watching and the kind words!
Appreciate the video and Al good information ! I was looking at a pole barn 40x60x14 that is close to that price, curious if you considered a pole barn early on and/or what made your decision to go with a red Iron building if can share. I’m in Ruckersville Va on I-64 so glad to find someone also in Va ., watched a lot of pole barn videos but they’re all over the country so hard to get idea for Va . Thanks for video, appreciate any insight as may now consider a red iron as option
Thanks @tauntlines7712 good deal I'm up in spotsylvania. So I originally was looking at doing a pole barn but didn't want a flat ceiling (from the wood truss) and then started looking into company's that used steel clear span trusses like miracle truss and stroud building supply and the miracle truss route was going to be way more expensive and places like stroud weren't willing to work with me to get engineered drawings that would meet my county requirements so I said screw it and started looking into red iron and after getting a ton of quotes that were either all over the place on price and what they came with or they just never responded or gave such a generic response that I knew they didn't care I ended up going with maverick not only because they were the first to get back to me with detailed information, price and preliminary drawings but their price was on par or better then most of the other quotes and the customer service is what 100% sold me on them . If you do start looking into the red iron route hit them up and talk to Josh he was the sales rep I delt with and he answered all my questions and was super helpful. If you have any other questions hit me up I'll try my best to share whatever info I can . Thanks for watching !
Thank you Ken , subscribed and thumbs up, I get not wanting flat ceiling and what you did with the height and office is great ! I gather you went with their standard 14 gauge steel and not optional 12 gauge, I gather the steel is plenty thick to give great confidence of the buildings strength and integrity ? Sure does seem like few columns with long distances for girts and Purlins , when used to pole barn 8, pole spacing…thx
Thanks I appreciate that , I'd have to go back and look at the engineered drawings to find the exact specs on the metal now but I went with what they suggested (the engineer) and according to all their specs they far exceed all the snow and wind loads my country requires. But coming from a background of stick building homes and garages and remodeling work (years ago) this is a very solid structure I was very impressed with it . And comparing it to say my metal carport that I can't walk on the roof without denting the metal this building I walked all over it without a worry other then the insulation dust I had to keep cleaning off the bottom of my shoes so I wouldn't slide off haha . Thanks again for watching and the comments!
I was wondering a couple of things. How high are your walls? And how high is your measurement? And what would I be able to put a car left underneath? Is what I would like to do in a building that I built. Please comment back very nice garage
Happy to answer, so my wall height of my building is 16' . Under the beams it a little shorter . Most average car lifts require about a 12' ceiling height as a minimum but my lift is actually 13'1" . My mezzanine floor height is 10' so the ceiling under it is about 9'1" . The office ceiling I think is right around 7' if I remember correctly and the bathroom ceiling slopes down with the roof . The storage loft above the office is like 4' tall at the front and 18" tall at its lowest point 10' back so that floor space there is like 10x11'4" . Thanks for watching and thank you ! If you have any other questions just let me know I'll try my best to answer or better explain
Ken, great video, awesome break down, perfect shop - my old shop was 26 by 36 and I always wished I had went bigger - I'm hoping with my next build the government switch to Kennedy or even Trump will get the price of materials down. That's what I'm waiting on. I subscribed, you seem like a nice guy. Cheers
@montyrayza7220 thanks ! I really appreciate the kind words and sub and thanks for watching ! Yeah hopefully we get this economy back under control in this next cycle for sure .
Good deal , I think I'm going to record something fresh and scrap the footage I had already done , I have some ideas to better organize the info so I'll try and get that knocked out really soon . Thanks and thanks for watching! Yeah I originally was going to do a pole building just to cut cost but after dealing with companies that weren't interested in getting me stamped drawings my county would be happy with I went outside of my budget going with the red iron but I'm happy I did even thought I had to sell a lot of my projects that I wanted to keep lol . Well good luck on your building and hopefully I'll have a longer video up in a few weeks or so
@@djfbabyyy3892 when you go with a manufacturer that just opened recently and offers the the lowest price then yeah the quality isn’t there. That’s why I recommended to not go with the cheapest and at least do one of the upgrades.
They make it super hard to access the commercial doors . But if you follow this like on a computer ( it won't pull them up on a phone or tablet) and then put your zip in and select your store it will then bring you to a page to build your clopay commercial garage door. Link is in next comment by itself @nandua11 hope this helps. Thanks for watching
This is awesome, I am working with Maverick right now to build the exact same shop (40x60x16). I don't have any friends here to help, so I have to have Maverick put the building up. Are you ultimately happy with the maverick experience and the quality? Also, what is your roof pitch?
Thanks ! I am honestly very happy with my choice in using Maverick and their customer service. The building went together so nice , we didn't have to fight to get anything to fit . I have recommended them to a few friends also and actually my good buddy ( my electrician) his dad just had Maverick completely build his 30x30 and they ate supper happy with the building and the service they got also . I went and checked the building out 2 weekends ago, and it's nice . The Maverick crew did a great job on it for them . Mine has a 4/12 pitch roof . If you have any other questions, hit me up I'm happy to share any info I can . I have a feeling you will be happy going with Maverick. Yeah, I got really lucky to have a handful of people I could really depend on to help me get mine put up ! Thanks for watching !
I used the black hero 150w 5000k highbay lights with the dimmer switches they sell for them . I put 3 lights on each switch. So far I have been very happy with them . Thanks for watching!
Price of red iron is premium to builders grade or commercial to residential. Worth every dollar in long run. But also know alot of guys don't borrow and build as can afford.
@Tomcat8911 yeah it is for sure . Yeah, if I hadn't borrowed a little myself, I wouldn't have ever saved enough to just pay cash for everything, so I get that . Thanks for watching!
Yep sure is and yeah I think it is a 1948 and still works great , it needs to be repainted and new door seals but up until I brought it home it had been in use in my wifes grandmother's garage as the soda fridge and from what I understand been in their family from new . Thanks I appreciate it and thanks for watching!
That’s awesome, mine was purchased new by my wife’s great grandparents and then passed on to her grandmother. Then sat in a shed for almost 30 years. It hasn’t skipped a beat since I brought it home 8 years ago. If they only made appliances like they used to…
@AtomicDiesel yeah I wish they still made stuff like they used to . So cool we both got ours with almost the same history except best I know mine never stopped being used
An erosion permit are you kidding me ..,anyways love the shop I hope to build one on my property some day would be 30ft wide by 60ft by about 16 ft tall give or take..
@DanO530.8 haha yep they just try to get every penny they can out of us doing stuff to our own property.... thanks I appreciate it ! Good luck hope it works out for you to build yours
Haha thanks, I think I'll try and record something a little more organized and better put together here really soon , it will be hood for me anyway to try and get better at putting these videos together too . Thanks again I appreciate it and thanks for watching! That's awesome. I hope it goes smoothly! Mine is a 4/12 pitch
@@kenschopshop Thank you! I’m looking to do the exact same size and similar mezzanine…looks great! Sorry to hear about the county fees!!! They gotta get their hands into everything. 😝
Haha , I had thought about that at one point but then there really wouldn't be much use to post the video, the views and watch time and comments help me slowly grow the channel. Thanks for watching thought!
On the interior ? If so that is 7/16 OSB sheathing that I put smooth side out for my walls instead of using drywall. Thanks for watching and if I can answer anything else just let me know
Land of the Free but not free to do what we want with our Land. I’m battling the same with paying for permits for an addition and then my taxes will go up 🙄. Things need to change in this country!
Yep ! Good luck hopefully yours goes well. I just got my new tax assessment in the mail the other day , they added 98k to my property value for adding the garage so can't wait to see that tax bill . Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I appreciate it, and thanks for watching! For most of my life, I thought so too, but I was able to sell a few vehicles and pull a little equity out of the house to cover the rest. Luckily, that was before interest rates started going back up
@drewchorlton342 I had thought about that at one point, but for the most tge mini splits do a decent job year round maintaining temperature. Thanks for watching!
@morehp1 yeah hindsight. I had thought about buying an off road forklift that I could have rigged a basket up to use as a man lift for this and then have it after to move car stuff around the yard but thought it would be cheaper to do the rentals but in the end I should have just bought some used equipment that I could have kept or resold after . Thanks for watching!
@ Iv built two houses and one steel building over years bought a backhoe each time on houses did all my digging and set trusses with when done I lost zero dollars on them, old equipment kind hits a bottom dollar range u buy something use it then sell to next guy looking do the same. My opinion is screw steal buildings having to bolt everything together blows. Stick built or pole barn only way to go for example u hold purlins up bang bang with nail gun no lining up holes running in bolts. Any building in a size a wood truss can span. wood is were it’s at if doing it yourself. My red iron building was only 40x45 and I was thinking real hard about dragging the welder out burning that bitch together after dropping nuts few times going up down. U can’t rent equipment and come out ahead on big projects also if u ever over dig on concrete use rock to get back to grade a lot cheap then concrete
Yeah, I wish I had just bought a piece of equipment instead of all the rentals . I got lucky, and most everything lined up pretty good on bolting it together, but I have definitely heard horror stories of people fighting to get their red iron lined up . And yeah, I definitely should have done a few things differently to save a little more money . Thanks again for watching and the feedback!
Hahaha I have jokingly told my wife if anything happened that we decided to split up we weren't moving her and the kids can stay in the house and I'll live in the garage . I just need to connect the plumbing to the well and septic soon so I can finish out the bathroom and office. Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! I'm no professional camera man that's for sure and using a gopro probably isn't the best because of the wide lense but I just rewatched it myself and it was never pointed at the floor and it was mostly always pointed straight out at about my shoulder height so yes the floor was in frame but not really pointed at the floor but either way thanks for watching ant the constructive criticism I'm still learning/figuring out all this stuff so always trying to improve !
Haha thanks yeah I have been following him since he first started building his step side international because we were both building one at the same time . Thanks for watching!
Elves.....you forgot to count how much gold you left out for the elves. Cause, there is no way you and crew could of built a shop that nice...There has got to be magic involved. (Did you ever come in one morning to find walls painted or roofing put on?.....I thought so.....elves)
Thanks, yeah if I had not over dug the footers and piers I could have saved a little on concrete but having more concrete isn't always a bad thing . Thanks for watching!
Hahaha yeah I try to keep it real , after spending way more on the garage then I had budgeted it will take me a while to recover/save back up or sell some projects to do some more of the bigger things I want to do . Thanks for watching!
Very true I didn't think to add those, the insurance I think only went up about 100 per year I think with adding 150k replacement value for the structure and adding like another 100k in person property to replace its contents . As for increased taxes I haven't seen that yet as they said I won't see the increased amount until this upcoming year . So hopefully they don't hit me too hard on that . Thanks for watching
Hahaha there is definitely cheaper options to build a garage for sure if you wanted to but even though I saved a good bit on labor mine definitely wasn't the cheapest option (not the most expensive either but ...) thanks for watching and sorry to be discouraging but wanted to share what it cost me not as a flex but to help others realize it might cost a bit more then they were thinking just like it did me .
Sorry you think so but only places I feel I could have save a little was in the equipment rentals and if I hadn't over dug my footers and used less concrete but everything else was on par with market price or lower as I prices shopped as much as I could without cutting quality. But regardless, I'm happy with the end results, and I appreciate you watching!
Dang you were lucky. I probably saved about what you paid for yours just by doing mine myself. I wish I could have done mine cheaper, but in the end, I'm happy with what I got for the money spent, though
Damn 51k for a fully finished inside and out 40x100 that's good ! If my site had been flat it would have been much cheaper but we had to build it up over 4' in the right rear plus completely removing a bunch of large trees and roots . You got me curious about your building like was it a flat site to begin with? What year did you build it ?what type of building is it ( red iron, post frame , stick built , block , box tube ,ect...) ?and what part of the country? I only ask for curiosity sake to see how things compare in different areas or times or construction types. Anyway thanks for watching and hope your enjoying your shop as much as I do mine ! I wish I could have gone bigger with mine like yours !
This is probably the most informative cost-to-build shop video I've seen on RUclips so far.
If you're concerned about your videos running long, just do your videos in parts. Part 1,part 2..
Thanks I really appreciate that , and thanks for watching!
Could you share a per sf cost for your setup? Thank you!
@stephendodson8302 $66 per sq ft. There were some overages because of some city related cost but wasn't related to the building cost. If I were to include all that it would be $72.
@@tslucam perfect, thank you!!
You can Aleah go with a metal tubular company instead of a red iron which would save you on cost if you live in the east coast I can help you with that
Super informative. Appreciate you taking the time to lay this all out!
Thanks I appreciate it ! Thanks for watching!
Man i would love to see the long video ! I wish my shop could be that big ! You did an excellent job .
Looks great, gave me lots of my ideas for my shop I'm building, love the mezzanine with room!
Thanks, I really appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Killer setup, Brother!! I've gotten some nice ideas from you for my garage project.
Thanks I really appreciate it ! That's awesome thanks again!
Thanks!@@kenschopshop
my dream build is in the forest, with all the animals and a garage with mazenine and an office, its pleasing to watch nicely built spaces like this, i just want to find peace in my homestead now that i am more than half through my life. just want to leave my city bungalow behind to the kids and hopefully spend rest of the days working and living at the farm
Sounds like a good plan! Thanks for watching and sorry for the delay in reply, I thought I had already but apparently not
Great detail! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Thanks I appreciate that !
Great looking shop! Really laid out well. I’m not jealous at all 🤣
Thanks I really appreciate that! And thanks for watching!
Yeah it sounds like prices are higher in your area. And you included things I didn’t in the price. Very nice shop you have, and I enjoy the videos
Hi David, where in NC did you build at? What company did you use? Starting down this path myself. Thanks in advance.
@@timhilton5096 I don’t know any red iron companies but I do work for a metal building company that does almost the same just different design and we offer 60 ft span buildings as well if you’re interested and they could be more affordable than a red iron
David Scott. What building package did you buy? I want to do a 60x60 as well. Would love so insight on what you did and should have done kind of thing
If you're desperate for a shop we will watch over a hour. Especially if we can find ways to save money without decreasing the build quality.
Subbed!
Thanks! Hell yeah I know what truck your talking about, pretty sure fester has it now I think . Thanks for watching and the sub
I built the same style metal building but instead of an office I built an apartment with outdoor patio stairs to access the apartment from the outside and rent it for $1000 a month
Oh wow that's is awesome, that extra rental income would be great to have . Thanks for watching!
How difficult is it to build living quarters in a rediron building?
@@PROAmateur01 im sure you weren't asking me but in my opinion its pretty easy to build out
@@kenschopshop I can’t find much about it being done online. All that keeps coming up is Barndominiums.
Nice!
Thanks
Awesome video! super cool garage! NICE...
Thanks I appreciate that ! And thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I'm working on getting my own steel building of the exact same size. Already had multiple delays but we're getting there.
Thanks ! And that's awesome! Yeah mine got delayed a few times also . We'll good luck on getting yours finished and an early congrats on it . Thanks again for watching!
If you still in the market I can help you
My surveyor said that we should contact them to come out and make sure that the anchor bolts were in the correct place.
Very nice video. You did a great job. A lean-to in the future will be super
Thanks, I appreciate that, and thanks for watching! Yeah I wish I could afford to do it now , it would be great to have another 30x60 area of covered parking

Great video Kenny...... can't wait to get my Colorado down there and make dual content
Thanks bro ! He'll yeah bro that would be cool!
@@kenschopshop your the only one I'll trust with my fab work.
@sellickusa thanks homie I really appreciate the confidence!
Great video!!
@@samgonzalez6859 thanks !
Great video man! Thanks for all the info. Hopefully someday I can build a dream garage!!
Sounds like a nice space! Thanks for watching and sharing your info it's nice to hear how others' similar builds cost !
Where or website did you order the shell at? Thank you
Love the breakdown of your garage! I think what you got seems worth it. I do have to ask though, was the shop financed or paid cash?
Thanks I appreciate it ! So it was a little bit of both , at the time I did it intrest rates were still low so I did a cash out refi on what I thought was going to be enough then I sold and flipped a few vehicles to pay for the rest ... so technically, everyone I paid was either cash or direct transfer from my bank account, but I did get a large majority of the money from the refi
Ready great video. Love the shop! (And, get your woman a decent piece of workout equipment!.)
Not going that big but we will be building in the next year or so. Great info Kenny
That's awesome, yall need room to store all yalls bad ass trucks ! Thanks for watching!
If your in the market for a steel building and live on the east coast I can help you with that
Good info... Thanks! I have a question regarding your garage door, what type and brand did you go with?
Some good info here, I am looking to build me a shop.
@xsiner thanks I appreciate it ! And good luck on building your shop . Thanks for watching!
40x60 space goes quick once you add an office space. I have 5 cars and a small tractor and mower I need to put in. What size should I go?

@belowfray5251 thanks for watching!
I will watch a longer video... beautiful shop. I want about a 40x60 but my budget is not that much... so I have different ideas to get my end result.
Well good luck on your building and hopefully I'll have a longer video up in a few weeks or so
If your still in the market I can help you go with a metal carport building instead of a red iron which is cheaper
@@5trikex766 lmao nobody wants that carport junk.. they blow over in 2 years.. red iron is 60 year warranty
@@djfbabyyy3892 when you go with a manufacturer that just opened recently and offers the the lowest price then yeah the quality isn’t there. That’s why I recommended to not go with the cheapest and at least do one of the upgrades.
could you post a link for the doors? Im looking for a 12x14 and cant find it on the site.

What model of hyper lite highway lights did you use?
I used the black hero 150w 5000k highbay lights with the dimmer switches they sell for them . I put 3 lights on each switch. So far I have been very happy with them . Thanks for watching!
As a single guy who likes wrenching on stuff, this is all I would need and maybe some land as well
For sure ! , thanks for watching!
Is that an old Westinghouse fridge? I have one (1948 model) that looks identical and is still working great! Well done on the shop, looks awesome.
So cool we both got ours with almost the same history except best I know mine never stopped being used
Nice job. What state and county are you in?
Hey James thanks for watching, I'm in spotsylvania va
An erosion permit are you kidding me ..,anyways love the shop I hope to build one on my property some day would be 30ft wide by 60ft by about 16 ft tall give or take..
@DanO530.8 haha yep they just try to get every penny they can out of us doing stuff to our own property.... thanks I appreciate it ! Good luck hope it works out for you to build yours
@@kenschopshop thank you

I subscribed. I am about to get started on a 40x60 myself.
What is your roof pitch?
Haha thanks, I think I'll try and record something a little more organized and better put together here really soon , it will be hood for me anyway to try and get better at putting these videos together too . Thanks again I appreciate it and thanks for watching! That's awesome. I hope it goes smoothly! Mine is a 4/12 pitch

Sorry to hear about the county fees!!! They gotta get their hands into everything. 😝
@jimbodacious66 yeah no problem at all ! Awesome that will be cool ! So far I love my lights I would definitely buy them again
Wish you could list this price breakdown in the description, save alot of time
Haha , I had thought about that at one point but then there really wouldn't be much use to post the video, the views and watch time and comments help me slowly grow the channel. Thanks for watching thought!
what are the wall panels called?
On the interior ? If so that is 7/16 OSB sheathing that I put smooth side out for my walls instead of using drywall. Thanks for watching and if I can answer anything else just let me know
thank you

go with the tankless water heater! big cost cutter in the long run
@omegajohnmac thanks for the info I'll look into them when I get ready to finish all that stuff. And thanks for watching!
what police state do you live in? Those permit fees are absolutely insane
Lol yes they are, I'm in the great state of Virginia. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching !
Nice building, price sounds about in line for that size of building.
Thanks I appreciate it !
Holy permit cost. I just picked up my permit for my 30x40 for $188.00.
Yeah they were pretty nuts in my area
@@kenschopshopcorrupt you mean. Tell them that’s their property taxes for the next 10 years. Ridiculous

its a real nice shop... out of my budget
Thanks. I appreciate it, and thanks for watching! For most of my life, I thought so too, but I was able to sell a few vehicles and pull a little equity out of the house to cover the rest. Luckily, that was before interest rates started going back up
Should put a wood fire stove in there to heat your shop
@drewchorlton342 I had thought about that at one point, but for the most tge mini splits do a decent job year round maintaining temperature. Thanks for watching!
Should bought a used sky track for 15k sold when down
@morehp1 yeah hindsight.
I’d move right in to that and give the house to the wife 😊
Hahaha I have jokingly told my wife if anything happened that we decided to split up we weren't moving her and the kids can stay in the house and I'll live in the garage . I just need to connect the plumbing to the well and septic soon so I can finish out the bathroom and office. Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Camera work on the shop tour leaves a little to be desired. I felt a good part of it I was looking at the floor.
Thanks for watching! I'm no professional camera man that's for sure and using a gopro probably isn't the best because of the wide lense but I just rewatched it myself and it was never pointed at the floor and it was mostly always pointed straight out at about my shoulder height so yes the floor was in frame but not really pointed at the floor but either way thanks for watching ant the constructive criticism I'm still learning/figuring out all this stuff so always trying to improve !
i think you and puddins fabshop would get on well
Haha thanks yeah I have been following him since he first started building his step side international because we were both building one at the same time .
Hahaha thanks! I wish elves had helped lol . Thanks for watching!
Don’t beat yourself up over the concrete.. I did quick math and came up with $22,000 3500psi with fiber
Thanks, yeah if I had not over dug the footers and piers I could have saved a little on concrete but having more concrete isn't always a bad thing . Thanks for watching!
I love the comment. There is more to do when I get More 💰 💰💰💰💰💰💰 MONEY 😆😆😆
Hahaha yeah I try to keep it real , after spending way more on the garage then I had budgeted it will take me a while to recover/save back up or sell some projects to do some more of the bigger things I want to do . Thanks for watching!
I have a 4x4 ShopSabre plasma table I’d sell ya from AZ if interested
Thanks for the offer, but I'm out in Virginia, so I'm sure shipping would kill any savings on that deal, but thanks for the offer and watching
You forgot your increased insurance costs and the increase in your property taxes.
They seemed to have totally ripped you off on the concrete and finishing
Yeah they definitely did a shit job finishing it
I don't think you can over do concrete. More is better than not enough.
Oh yeah I agree for sure . Thanks for watching!
The scary part is that you said you did it yourself to save some money 😮. Overpaid in a lot of the stuff

Shit... I don't even want a fuq'n garage now......smh..
Girl math 😂
Definitely overpaid😢
Sorry you think so but only places I feel I could have save a little was in the equipment rentals and if I hadn't over dug my footers and used less concrete but everything else was on par with market price or lower as I prices shopped as much as I could without cutting quality. But regardless, I'm happy with the end results, and I appreciate you watching!

Sorry it wasn't up to your standards, but thanks for watching anyway. Hopefully, you could at least listen to the info I was sharing .

holy cow, put up my 30x30x12 up for under 20k
Dang you were lucky. I probably saved about what you paid for yours just by doing mine myself. I wish I could have done mine cheaper, but in the end, I'm happy with what I got for the money spent, though
Damn i did mine set up concrete 51,000 all in i damn near spit my drink out when you said 12,000 for site prep...mine is 40x100
