As a former builder with 12 years of owning my own company, and 25 years of construction, I can say that your numbers are very realistic. I like the way that you have done this project young man. I have bought some land near the mountains out to itself in northeast Georgia. Wife wants a nice house. I want a shop to restore my 1969 Camaro. I am close to retiring from work, 4 years maybe. You have gave me inspiration at 64 years old to pursue a shop building FIRST! I might end up living in it by myself but ol well. Thank you for posting this video. Good work all around, in the video and construction.
I got an estimate for a 60x80 metal building slab and all for $160,000 down in texas and I believe that included 4 bay doors. The guy said the price also depends on the cost of steel at the time too and I believe it was high a year ago when I asked. Now of course this didn't include the land and this was just an open steel building with no rooms inside. I can just build an office inside if I want one.
@A W I think it had basic electrical, no plumbing. I'm in the process of buying a property with a steel building on it already and just adding a smaller addition to it later on since I don't trust that the contractors will stay on budget. I can see that 160,000 easily turning into 250,000. That quote for 160,000 I got about a year ago. Right now with the covid-19 thing going on the contractors are swamped and I can't even get anyone to get back with me with a quote.

I literally had a conversation with my friend the other day about how we would build a house around a garage. Looks like this man's already living the dream.
As a married man my first thought when you went inside was "that doesn't work". Switch the brain to a single guy and loved it. I wish I had taken the opportunity to do this when I was your age, having a father that was a builder would have made it a breeze and it would have fit my needs perfectly.
BRAVO ---- You're my hero. I wanted to build that house/garage in 1965. Because of--- "life" --- it took me 30 years but I finally ended up with something a little less than yours. You did good building what you wanted to start with. Now I'm 75 and almost too old to use my home machine shop. Your cost break down was excellent, much appreciated and spot on. P.S. ---- good luck finding a woman who wants to live in a house like yours. (there are some around though.)
I want to hit that magical triple digit footage mark too at least in length. I’d recommend putting bay doors on both ends if you can swing it. Easier to get vehicles in and out.
Its funny I found this video. Got so excited I told everyone. I swear every person I know had already watched it. I'm 44 and it's time to finally get started on my own place before it's too late
@@Kordare remember they have a heat limit between 40 Deg F to 0 Deg F when heating depending on the unit. In other words you will need a separate heater when it's cold
The new low temp ones actually kick out heat down to -22. Mine still heats fairly well at -13. Yes, some backup heat is needed, but not that often. I live in southern Minnesota.
ABSOLUTE MAD RESPECT to you in so many aspects my man!! You are LIVING your best life and I have no doubt that you will go very far in life! And the best of luck to you going forward for sure! Thanks for the breakdown and full your, definitely will help with what I'm going against. I have my own land but just nervous on the upfront pricing and the whole process. So thanks for that 🙏❤
I believe the proper term is barndominium aka pole barn except that’s all wood that I’ve seen and this is metal. I do prefer the metal structure myself as well.
My wife and I are planning on buying land this year...our goal is to build a place very similar to this (likely just a smidge smaller). So this has been good context.
Larry Nichols: You will achieve your dream! If you are thinking this way already at 14, nothing can stop you. As choices and opportunities present themselves, choose the one that leads you toward your dream...not away from your dream!!
gcflower99 thank you as a 15 year old now i have a 1980 chevy c10 my old farm truck that i have been slowly putting money into and i am working on a ls swap for more reliable and little more power nothing insane but its mine
7 or 8 years ago I sat down and sketched out something very similar to this, except I wanted to leave all the land around the house wooded (so I could sit on the front porch and watch birds/wildlife while I enjoyed my cigars). I told my old man about it during a visit and he kind of scoffed at the idea, then last year he built one himself (not wooded, but in the middle of 80 acres). I got remarried 1.5 years ago, to a city girl, so those dreams have gone up in smoke, but at least I can live vicariously through builds like yours... Nice work!
The video is excellent. Your build is amazing. You did some well thought out planning to make your dream a reality! And your planning included for future additions, expansions, and improvements. It's hard to get compliments from me, but, by golly!, I take my hat off to you many, many times! You are obviously smart, competent, very capable, and responsible. I'm 74 and can't give you any ANY advice except, maybe: "Don't EVER sell yourself short!!". I'm not jealous or envious of you at all! I'm just VERY happy FOR you!! From what I see, you deserve all the good that comes your way. I'm glad that you live in a country that allows a person like you to do what you are doing! I hope we can keep it that way!
I’ve wanted to build something similar to this for as long as I can remember. This has been really helpful and inspiring for me to start coming up with designs and researching mor win depth what I need to do. Love your videos man
I wish I had been as smart and motivated as you are at that age, but I was too busy chasing girls, driving fast cars and having fun to care about building a nice house. You have done a great job of setting up your home and it will serve you well in the future. Best of luck to you sir, you deserve it.
Absolutely spot on! Amazing having the forethought of pouring the floor at 6" so lift equipment can be placed anywhere. That is a great tip for your viewers! Awesome Job brother! Thanks
Prenup. Prenup. Prenup. Love the setup. Hoping to build the same. I've purchased this project many times over post divorce (money down the drain). Good to see a young man doing well.
Awesome video. Straight to the point. No nonsense. No BS. Love what ya built. Well thought out, simple, efficient. This is gonna help me a lot in building my own.
Bro just built every straight blue-collar / red neck guys dream house....... And he did it for about half of what a normal house cost... Bro im sold im definitely going to have to look into building something similar like this myself.
I’m not sure why this came up on my recommended feed (I watch a lot of car vids) but great video of someone creating a place exactly (or near as much) as they want and need. I’m an architect and this would never be something for me - I’ve got a small historic house in the city with a garage that could barely hold a Mini and a 3’ driveway lol - but the functionality and design is exactly what it should be for your lifestyle needs. I love the three tall windows in the garage. It would be great to see you develop the outdoor area with a terrace or deck, maybe with some shading if needed as a space to hang out with your buds after a big day and take in the view when the weather is good. Inspiring to see someone making it happen and living his own dream. You seem like a humble and level headed guy. Peace!
That means a lot coming from an architect, and I really appreciate the respect of others wants/needs/styles! Not enough people have that attitude, thanks for the comments!
Trust me, I know how much budget drives a design. Everything is a bit of a compromise, the trick is getting as much of the elements that are most important to the program set in place and still getting most of the secondary basics taken care of with the potential to capture nearly every last bit as funds allow. Design and build for now and the future.
Let me start out with " Great Job"! One can tell you put a lot of time and energy into the design and layout of your project and it looks and functions well. Appears you chose a great group of sub-contractors who also had your best interests at heart and the finished project shows. I was a new home builder and remodeler for years and I caution you on others suggesting after the fact you should have done this or moved that knowing they mean well. Be happy with what you have and when the next project comes along and there will be another project in your future you will be all the wiser my friend. You have all the best reasons to be proud of what you have accomplished for your self and wish you nothing but peace and happiness. Keep up the good work!
I build pole building everyday and I love shed houses. Especially for car and truck guys/gals they are perfect! Awesome job but shouldve had me build it ;)
I’ve been considering doing this, much smaller though, I’m thinking 30’x60x16.Turn 30x30 into a garage, leave it unfinished with polished concrete floors and a 30x30 living area and 30x15 loft. My thoughts on building this type of setup is build what you need, you can always make it nicer later.
Im just wondering what job he scored. I just got out of college, land a good paying job, but now have all this debt to pay off before doing anything like this :'(
@@relajad0 My guess is that he did not go to college, that means NO debt. That kind of project is not done from the average college personne. No saying then can not. It's just not there profile...
I'm not his parent or a parent at all but I'm proud of him. imma bout to sell this house and do this. very very interesting. If I could get commercial/residential zoning that would be bad ass
I'm going to build one also, what sucks is the wife still wants 5 bedrooms so I think I'm going to have really good wardrobe cabinets with wheels so I don't get taxed for all the rooms and maybe beds that fold against the wall. See what happens.
I’ve lived in my shop / store for about 4 years with no wife and three kids. I just built an apartment into old storage space. It’s a WWII surplus Quonset hut. I like it but most people don’t understand it. It’s super industrial and simple. Zero nicknacks but I have a car lift and a bar. Living my best life.
I bought an old bowling alley for a quarter of your build. I’m a retro guy. I love your building. My shop is 37 wide and 98 long w a upstairs. It was a 4 lane bowling alley in small town USA. Keep building folks
You know you're a GEARHEAD when... Very nice!! I couldn't convince my wife to build a garage house but I did build a new garage with an 9000# auto lift installed!
@Billy Bob it's called hard work. I owned my first 130k house at 24 with only a 60k loan. Rehabbed it by 26 and sold for 200k and moved to Florida all while turning a wrench. I'm 34 now and building a 800k house and shop on the water here in Florida for half the cost because I own a construction company now. Work for it and don't let anyone hold you back. I worked 80 hour weeks at the shop and out of my own garage to afford what I wanted. Only regret was not putting money into the markets I'd pry be a millionaire but I did invest into myself. No college, barely passed High School because of myself being ADD and grew up with abusive parents. I did find an amazing wife that works just as hard plus we didn't have kids till after being married for 6 years which I made sure of. Ever want advice I've helped a quite a few of my guy's get on their own doing just like myself. You must though give up boozing every night and smoking weed all the time that shit doesn't get you anywhere. I like to go out and trust me I played 3 nights of league pool before I left up north so I'm not just some boring fool. Just I enjoy fast cars, houses, traveling and my wife more then the bar and getting high all the time. And again we never received a single dollar from anyone besides what we made so don't think it's not achievable.
@Billy Bob Worked throughout college, graduated, got a job at 21, saved everything, bought the land at 22 (with help of a loan), kept saving and started building at 24.
@Krazy Kozelka's You hit the nail on the head. With hard work and patience this is achievable. Unfortunately a lot of people don't have that discipline so when they see me they just assume I'm not paying for it... If you watch the video it's pretty obvious who paid for this, everything was done on a tight budget and most of it is still incomplete. Congrats on your accomplishments thus far, thanks for sharing!
One thing to think about, I lived in a bunkhouse that was above the ranches garage. When starting tractors/vehicles in the morning that exhaust went right into the living area. Probably lost a couple months off my life living up there.
Thank you for this video. I've watched tons of walk through videos of similar builds, but nothing with this much detail and insight, especially the breakdown of the cost. Very well done.
I thought I had my design squared away and then I watched this video. Now I am thinking about rethinking my plans. But more than likely the budget will win. Awesome job you did.
Me and my father are building a home at land he bought and the garage was one of the most important things we both talked about i cant wait to see the finished product

@@JesusChrist-uu2te you got that right! That rainwater pit was like $6500

As a married man my first thought when you went inside was "that doesn't work". Switch the brain to a single guy and loved it. I wish I had taken the opportunity to do this when I was your age, having a father that was a builder would have made it a breeze and it would have fit my needs perfectly.
Thanks! It's just what I need right now with room to expand.
Rick, I had to do the same with my brain. Lol
I’m recently single so I’m doing this while I still can!!

Thanks so much and congrats on making yours happen, even if it is a little later in life!

Nice work dude. We are about to start our 40x100 shop with living quarters in the Spring!!
Thank you and good luck with your project!
How much is that costing you? Im thinking 120x80
I want to hit that magical triple digit footage mark too at least in length. I’d recommend putting bay doors on both ends if you can swing it. Easier to get vehicles in and out.
Nice. Love your layout!
This is dang near close to what I’ve been wanting to build! Thanks for making this video it definitely gives me some insight! Keep up the videos.

Its funny I found this video. Got so excited I told everyone. I swear every person I know had already watched it. I'm 44 and it's time to finally get started on my own place before it's too late
Haha that's awesome and it's never too late, make it happen!
I would say mini splits are the move. We use those around my parents house and it’s definitely worth it
Someone else suggested this, definitely will look into them👍
They are great, can heat/cool certain areas of the house when needed and you have redundancy with separate units.
@@Kordare remember they have a heat limit between 40 Deg F to 0 Deg F when heating depending on the unit. In other words you will need a separate heater when it's cold
@@OxAO thanks for the tip!
The new low temp ones actually kick out heat down to -22. Mine still heats fairly well at -13. Yes, some backup heat is needed, but not that often. I live in southern Minnesota.

Thanks a lot! I feel like I haven't even started yet 🤘
You were ahead of your times, it’s basically what they call a barndo
I’ve always heard it called a shouse.....shop/house
I believe the proper term is barndominium aka pole barn except that’s all wood that I’ve seen and this is metal. I do prefer the metal structure myself as well.
I absolutely Love these Garage/Barn/Home combos.
My wife and I are planning on buying land this year...our goal is to build a place very similar to this (likely just a smidge smaller). So this has been good context.

You’re living my dream. Exactly what I’ve always wanted
Make it a reality!
Nice work!
Thanks a lot! I am letting most of the land go back to woods so it will be similar to what you mentioned in a few years.
Great build!
Great property!
Love how the house is part of the shop area.

@@tpolerex7282 my thoughts exactly!
I appreciate the comments and kind words! I'm happy with what I've accomplished and have learned so much along the way.
Out in the countryside near New Iberia, Louisiana there seems to be a lot of these pole buildings made into houses. I love it!

Im Dexur wish you were near Va. I’m looking at 20 acres now and plan to build something similar
I have watched your build video so many times. Hope you are still enjoying.

How am I just finding this channel? I’ve been discussing building like this with the wife for almost a year now.
Didnt have much on my house here until lately, hopefully this helps!
@Billy Bob yup I agree
This is also my dream, but I want the house on the top. Basically a huge rancher with a deck on top of the garage
One thing to think about, I lived in a bunkhouse that was above the ranches garage. When starting tractors/vehicles in the morning that exhaust went right into the living area. Probably lost a couple months off my life living up there.
Duuuuuude that is the EXACT setup I have been looking for!!!
