I've really missed these art stream/videos. I really needed this again, I swear, just listening to this while I'm drawing is better than listening to music. Thank you Bobby a lot for doing this !
From what I gather he was suggesting setting aside an hour, either first thing in the morning or at the end of the night, to do a very specific kind of study for a period of time. That consistent habit of study will keep it fresh on the mind and ends up having a snowball effect. It's tough because no matter what else you have going on in the day you have to do that first. So if you normally get up at 7 to go to work, now you have to get up at 6 everyday and spend that first hour working, whether you feel like it or not. I've done this with daily still life's, film studies for storyboarding and most recently with writing. For me, it's the best practice I've ever developed for getting better at this stuff.
your videos are so enlightening.Strategic is a good word to use when it comes to studying. If you go into a 8 hour long study with no idea what you want to get out of it, and no strategy whatsoever then you won't get as much as you could out of the study.
Hi Bobby!! I recently discovered your videos, and I love them so much. I’ve been following your advices lately, and they’re really helping me out. I want to strengthen my fundamentals and I was thinking of signing up for schoolism but I live in the boondocks lol so my internet connection isnt so great. RUclips does work, so I do want to try! Currently, I’m trying to figure out the best way to practice anatomy. Wish me luck! Thank you so much for being such inspiration for my life!!
Hey Bobby I've always enjoyed your stream. Some feedback is that, i feel like you're not following up when jonathan mention something. Instead of following up you tend to cut off what others said or jump into another topic. Would be nice if there's a connection and follow through from what others said. All the best!
Yup, i was really curious about the little story Mr. Hardesty started about his wife and fitness :( It was kinda sad he was cut off so suddenly. I do love these streams anyway, they are very informational and extremely helpful.
Thanks for the feedback Chang. I appreciate it. I try to not let things steer off topic for too long. We've done that in the past where all of a sudden we're talking about cage fighting for 15 min. I'll look out for that more in the future.
I love these, but why do you have to keep cutting off your instructors. I really wanted to know what Jonathan had to say at 30:00 . Man, he was about to say something super interesting. I'm so frustrated. xD
Awesome stream! Maybe a question you could address in a future stream: Just starting out doing art and I've been working through some of the Schoolism courses (they're awesome!) but wondering if you had suggestions on how to be 'strategic' in approaching them? In other words, if you had a year to set aside to really trying to learn the fundamentals and improve, is there a particular order you'd approach the Schoolism curriculum? Would you suggest tackling 1 course at a time and just practicing the exercises over and over? Or perhaps working through a painting course simultaneously with a drawing one?
HI +TMP Art! I work at Schoolism for Bobby. So happy you enjoyed the stream and that you're enjoying the courses! Everyone learns differently, so what you are capable of doing and what will work for you will come in time! But as with everything in life it definitely flourish with commitment and practice :) I personally take the courses one class at a time. I started off with "Essentials of Realism with Jonathan Hardest", which is where you can learn things such as values, edges, and proportion. I then took "Introduction to Digital Painting with Andrew Hou". Then I decided I really wanted to invest in character design. So I took "Gesture Drawing with Alex Woo", and now I am taking "Expressive Characters with Wouter Tulp". It really helped me to focus on one area of learning, such as character, or you could look at pursuing environment for example. There are plenty of resources out there as well, for example for navigating your way around photoshop there are many tutorials out there for free. Also, there are many fantastic art books out there as well! I think it's extremely important to make sure that wherever you choose to learn from, just make sure it is a good source. That way you are learning properly, and the right way, which will save you a lot of time and headaches later on :) You can always email in artwork/your portfolio to info@schoolism.com and we can take a look at it, and make suggestions from there! I hope that helps, and best of luck on your journey! Just keep learning! ~ Richelle
QUESTIONS: Hey Bobby! I was wondering if you would ever come to the Cincinnati Comic Expo? And would you consider bringing on an animator like Aaron Blaise, Toniko Pantoja, etc. to teach 2D animation on Schoolism? Also, thank you so much for your amazing podcasts, SCHOOLISM, and interviews, and a huge thank you to Jon Hardesty for the awesome insights as well. I'm a recent graphic design graduate that's been obsessed with traditional animation and character design since forever, and Schoolism has given me the push I needed to begin my journey toward my dreams while working as a full-time graphic designer. I don't think I could have had the confidence to do so without Schoolism; I took a couple classes on the subscription route, and my immediate improvements after each made me believe I had a chance to succeed if I kept pushing myself. So, I just wanted to express my continued appreciation for the generous work you do for us.
Hi +Jacob the Wells, thanks for your question! I work for Bobby at Schoolism. Unfortunately I don't think we are coming to the Cincinnati Comic Expo anytime soon, but hopefully in the next month or so we will be releasing our workshops for 2018! Regarding classes, we are updating our courses on Schoolism, so there are some exciting traditional courses coming soon! Such as painting in watercolour with Carcamo, :) So happy to hear that you are enjoying your artistic journey with us!! That honestly brightens our day hearing that, because many of us that work at Schoolism are artists ourselves :) So keep improving and working hard, the beauty of art is that you can never stop learning, experimenting and growing! Best wishes to you! ~ Richelle
Very awesome interview,i did from the beginning when Jonathan started drawing i draw with him..in some old interview where i just i can see only artist face talking to you i draw that artist if there are no one is drawing on screen 😂 and the and i got little art study comparing direct with the Jonathan hardesty man that was so cool! I made a lots of mistakes not look like the ref img,i would rather say i found a way to draw female version of "robert downey jr"😄but i leaned a lot from drawing with him! It's almost feel like we are in the same room talking and drawing together! Thanks jonathan hardesty ❤ thanks bobby chiu,❤ 🙏🏻
That's so awesome to hear!! Thanks so much for your kind feedback. It's really great to know that you learned a lot from drawing along with Jonathan. Thanks for checking out this video :) ~S
Thanks guys for an amazing stream! Always great to learn from y'all! A quick question, is it possible to be able to freelance, storyboarding for studios in the comfort of your own home? I know for others they get jobs from doing either concept art or character design from freelance. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks!
Hi Elli, I work at Schoolism for Bobby - I personally took Jonathan's course on Schoolism, and not to sound biased but it was definitely awesome! I learned so much about values, really helped with my process! Best of luck ~ Richelle
Thanks :) again very helpfull video.. and i have question - I separated my day into 90 mins blocks.. then 10 mins pause when i am drawing.. do you think i will need step up when this will be no problem at all? like 3 hours straight then pause then again?
I really love this stream! I have learned so much from you two. You guys have so much wisdom with Artist life that it makes me strive to become better as an artist. Btw how do you spell the name of the character designer for next stream? I wanna look them up😊
Hi +ROOQ! I work at Schoolism for Bobby :) The next artist that he interviewed was 'Carter Goodrich', a renowned character designer in the industry! His interview will be available on youtube soon as well, once it's finished with edits :D ~ Richelle
Hello Bobby! Don't know if you answer to comments, but I'll just try. One or two weeks ago I discovered your videos and I'm interested in schoolism. I have watched only a few of your videos til now, but you said in one from a year ago that schoolism costs 15$ a month, but the website states it's 30$ now. Just wondered why it's duplicated? And is it still this way that every additional course costs 1$ extra or has that changed too? So as far as I take it, you pay 30$ a month and have one course. And if you add like five you'd pay 35$ a month, yes? While having 6 courses? 😁 greetings from germany :3
Subscription prices are at $30/month because the old price was too low for us to keep Schoolism healthy, but now you get access to every class. No additional cost to switch classes.
Bobby Chiu Ah okay. You say 'switch courses', so you can't have three at the same time? One day watching part 1 of course A, the next day part 1 of course B and the day after part 2 of course A for example? :)
i graduated from an illustration school in 2006 when i was in my early twenties but i wouldn't say i got serious about things till my mid 30's does that mean its 'too late'?
It's never too late!!! People who are constantly learning may not find their real passion until later on in life, and that's totally OK! There's no time limit to learning or to finding what you really enjoy, so keep going!! :) ~S
Hi +Himesh Anand, I work at Schoolism for Bobby. Unfortunately we do not offer free trials on Schoolism! Sorry for any inconvenience! We have done promotional free trials in the past, maybe this is something we can look into doing again some time in the future :) If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to email in at info@schoolism.com ~ Richelle
Hi +Shadow Link, I work at Schoolism for Bobby. Hopefully I have the right word, but are you asking about atelier? :) It is where a small group of students (artists) learn and train under the supervision of a professional master within a workshop or studio. They learn many different methods, they practice traditional work, and remain extremely committed throughout their years of study! I hope that helps! ~ Richelle
you said to try to think from the artist's point of view and see if you can get to understand why they do certain actions, indicates some people ain't doing that, damn, such a huge gap between me and the rest of the student, I am such a weirdo. from the first time I do my study, I was already doing that, I was doing master study on the work of Vitaly Bulgarov, I was trying to understand how the hack does he managed to create his design, I still can't quite grasp that after at least three year. so freaking hard.
haha, trendy indeed. fundamentals. but most of the time that was just people trying to say something they don't understand but don't want to act immature and don't know about things, either.
I've really missed these art stream/videos. I really needed this again, I swear, just listening to this while I'm drawing is better than listening to music. Thank you Bobby a lot for doing this !
Totally agree
Omg, I thought I was the only one!!!
i put music in the background while listening to this and draw tho
That's the cool things about this,i getting it 3year later and feeling it's live!
jonathan was giving good advice at 30:00 ish, its sad that bobby cut him off.
I know right! It kinda irked me off a bit, I was waiting for a continuation..
I KNOW RIGHTTT
Pissed me off too. Very rude.
it was too good to be for free.

Wow. A course about painting-drawing different materials sounds really really awesome!
thank you so much.. very helpful advice, not only in art, but in life. God bless you both
33:50 wise words, full of meaning and knowledge

Am I the only one who noticed they forgot to change the one screen link? It still has Marko Djurdjevic's Facebook lol.
LoL: "Seeming creepy because staring at other peoples faces to study" :D - Lately sounds familiar to me.
9:09 who is that brazilian watercolor artist you mentioned?
Yash Keni Carcamo
What is the name of the Chilean watercolorist living in Brazil he mentioned? :(
Its "Gonzalo Cárcamo" ! =)
Oh yes, thanks a lot Bobby! Hello Jonathan!
owwwwo perfect
This is a really good video and thanks for sharing your brush strokes it helped me alot!
is there 30 or 1 day free trial on schoolism? xD?
