Don mclean recently got his star on the walk of fame. He had home free sing part of this song at the commencement. Must have been a true honor for them🌹
Well deserved
@@TheDonsChannel It was the first time in the 65 year history season of the Hollywood Walk of Fame that anyone had ever sung at a star dedication ceremony. This little clip was on Tic Tok:
ruclips.net/video/tsmTuqOoyBE/видео.html
They also all received three Telly Awards for the song and video. Telly Awards are national awards which honor excellence in video and television across all screens. They won 1 gold and 2 silver. Home Free also won a silver Telly for most viral video for their video of God Bless the USA featuring Lee Greenwood and the US Air Force Band. It’s been a good year for the group with awards and recognitions.
@@rebelpearl Thank you for posting that. I am a rabid fan of both Don Maclean and Home Free.
Feb.3rd, 1959, Buddy Holley, Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), died in a plane crash in Iowa. This was the inspiration of this song. Nice remake w/ Home Free. #veteransbattlestillrages #nomoretalkingletsgo
"American Pie" and "Vincent" are two of the finest examples of the beautifully crafted ballad-style songs of that era.
Excellent version of “American Pie”!
When we saw Don McLean in concert a few years ago. When he performed American Pie, everyone in the audience was on their feet and singing every word!
I would've lived that
@@TheDonsChannel I’m very sentimental so I was singing right along with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. 🤷🏻♀️😁
Don McLean still sounds good.
Home Free does it again. Lending their special magic to an American classic. Brilliant! I watched Don McLean (Scottish descendant? 😊) being interviewed about American Pie. He confirmed he makes approximately $400K per year in residuals on this song alone. Not bad, huh? Thank you for reacting to the video. 💜
Yes, Don Maclean is of Scots descent (as am I, for what it's worth :) ).
@johne6081 I am as well. So is my husband--very much so, actually. Nice to meet you. Long live Scotland!
@@stellaknows8548 My wife (Scots-Irish descent) and I plan once again to attend the annual San Diego Highland Games, which this year come one and two days after our 50th wedding anniversary.
@johne6081 That sounds terrific! Congratulations on your 50th wedding anniversary. How wonderful! Blessings to you and your bride💜
One of the things that awes me about Home Free is the range of both Chance and Tim. Both basses singing cleanly in a full tenor range.
An absolute classic, and done up beautifully by Home Free!
😀
You probably already know that this was Home Free's tribute to Don McLean's 50th anniversary of "American Pie". Thanks for reacting to this! You're the most patriotic Scottish "American" we have!
Thank you for doing this reaction.....it means a lot
Aren't they amazing???!!!!! Well done this one!
I love them Heidi
Loved your reaction....it doesn't get any better than this! Absolute perfection and they all got their chance to shine! Congrats on 120k subs!
Thank you very much
The Summer my oldest son was 5 years old this son was so popular and played over and over on the radio. We are driving down the road, no AC in our car so the windows are open and this song came on the radio. I'll never forget my 5 year old singing this. When my son sang the chorus, loud and clear with his head back and shouting, how he drove his Chevy to the levy and those good ole boys drinking whiskey and rye saying this is the day that I die, this is the day that I die. I can assure you no mother wants to hear her son singing about drinking whiskey and rye and saying this is the day that I die. But it was great watching him pour his heart and soul out singing that song. What memories. What a great song. Thanks for sharing it and giving us your reaction. I just had to share this special memory.
These guys are so amazing! Another song well done by Home Free. Thank you for the great reaction!
My pleasure
Hey there! As always, I love your reactions to Home Free. I really like this one because each member gets to show their own style and range...and then they cone together and you hear how amazing their individual talents combine and complement each other to make incredible music like this. Thank you for all you do to support and aid military members and veterans. Thank you for using your voice to make a difference, to make sure they are not forgotten. May God Bless You in all that you do. ❤
One of my favorite songs sung by one of my favorite bands. Awesome! Thanks so much for doing this song!
This is by far my favorite collaboration they have done, because it brings back such great memories. Not that the others aren't phenomenal too, because they are. Truly enjoyed watching your reaction to this song. Thank you
Thank you very much
Great rendition of a wonderful classic!!!
Home Free never misses, and neither does Don Maclean. Great teamwork here.
A couple of weeks ago DON MCLEAN was given his Star in Hollywood ….&, Home Free was invited to sing at it …Just Too KOOL ‼️💥‼️⭐️. When he & Home released this video…it was the 50th anniversary of the song ⭐️🔥💥‼️👍. He has approached Home Free to do it 👍🔥💥‼️. He’s a really great guy ‼️
Thank You for your reaction 🥰‼️🥰. Their latest release…WORKIN’ FOR A LIVIN’ “… it is so FUN‼️🔥‼️ &, Adam has a surprise solo ….AMAZING 💥🔥‼️
Back when the song was first released, a local Toronto radio station, on request, would send the meaning of each of the lyrics - it's such a deep song with so much included in it. I think the age in Don McLean's voice only adds to the poignancy of it. Thank you for playing it!
Love this song # no more talkin 🤐 just listen 👏👏
Absolutely or Sing at the top of your voice
Don thanks for reacting to this. This is a generational iconic & a favorite of all of my generation. This was released Oct 24th, 1971 so in just a few weeks it's the 50th anniversary. Also just in case you don't know, "the day the music died" is a real thing...Feb 3rd, 1959 there was a plane crash in a snowstorm in Iowa and the plane was carrying 3 of the top teen attractions of the day...Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper & the legendary Buddy Holly. Don asked Home Free to collaborate with him and they released the song on Feb 3rd 2021, the 62nd anniversary of the Day the Music Died. We all knew this song so well that from 1971/72 school year (6th grade for me) until I graduated in 1978 this was sung by all the kids on every field trip we took or high school band trip or football game we traveled too...all the verses too...know it by heart. You could easily say this is the song of my generation. I do hope you read this as much as I wrote here 😄😄 keep doing Home Free reactions. I can't pay for any as I am poor as a church mouse, but if you see to doing their cover they recently released of One Man Band, a cover of a 2019 hit by the band Old Dominion. If you read this far thanks & please consider doing it....the harmonies are even outstanding for Home Free. You'll love it....it's an eargasm.
As I am sure you know, the song is much more than the story of the plane crash ("the day the music died), as it walks us through the events of music of two decades ("a generation lost in space," etc.). Absolutely brilliant set of lyrics set in a fabulous melody line. This is real song writing!
I would love to hear your take on Whiskey For My Men, Beer For my Horses by Toby Keith and Willie Nelson.
You would SO enjoy it.
Only problem is the song spells whisky wrong
@@DyvmSlorm must be pouring them Irish or American instead of Scottish whisky. 😄😄😄
My mother and I are planning a short trip this summer to the crash site. I feel it's a solemn place to visit. A generation of teens lost 3 of their musical idols in 1 night after the concert. Think of all the music that never had the chance to be sung. Just an incredible song!
I feel so fortunate to have found your channel! You let the song play and your expressions are your reactions! This is only my second time seeing you react and won't be my last! Thank you for what you do and I'll see you on Patreon.
Thank you so much for a great reaction to an iconic song. The guys doing it with Don McLean is really terrific for them. I am sure they were very excited to get that opportunity and of course a giant example of tremendous talent. Thanks again.
My pleasure
This is such a fantastic song and I especially like this version with Home Free! It’s so beautiful! Thanks for the reaction!
WOW!!! That was so great...WOW!!!
This song (the original) was my dad's favorite song. We even played it at his Celebration of Life back in 2012 after he had battled cancer for 17 years. When I hear it now, I always know that at that moment, he is with me. I miss him terribly. Lost my sister (& only sibling) almost exactly 2 years later in 2014 & then lost my mom 8 months after my sister. But whenever I hear certain songs, like this one, I feel them with me still. Just found your channel & love it. Love the songs you choose for your reactions.
Great song! Thank you for reacting to it 🙏
This was so good. Don sounded great for 75! The boys killed it. Nice that they each had a verse to sing. Loved the boxes. Reminded me of shadow boxes that you keep your memories in. Clever video with the black and white movies in the background. Great reaction Don!
This was one of my favorite songs when I was growing up back in the '60s and seventies and of course there were the endless philosophical discussions over whatever booze we happen to be drinking at any given time over what the song actually meant because it was so deep there had to be a deeper meaning and of course everyone had speculated over the years the father son and holy Ghost was John f Kennedy Jack Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr The Day the music died was the days that Buddy Holly Richie Valenzuela and the Big bopper were killed in a plane crash his widowed bride of course was the bride was the widow of Buddy Holly nothing could break that Satan spell because Mick Jagger will be very very seductive spell the marching band The Beatles refuse to let the Americans take the field back the jester well he was on the sidelines in a cast because Bob Dylan had a really serious motorcycle accident that came very very close to killing him and the thorny crown he stole was the one off Elvis Presley's head endless speculation and endless Love
Wow that is brilliant. It all happens so quickly it would be so difficult to pick up on
Excellent!!! Just...BRILLIANT Y'ALL!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I love home free listening for years 🕊❤🙏
They are fantastic
You should react to " story time with Tim" they're pretty funny.
This was a great reaction 🥰🥰
Thanks Ruth
story time is so funny, Tim is quite the dry stand up comedian!!
I’m more convinced than ever that we would be pub friends with every reaction. My two best friends and I get together every Labor Day weekend to watch American football, drink craft beer, and tell old stories and laugh. We’ve done it since 2009. We don’t invited anyone, but I extend an open invitational you my friend.
Thank you very much Phil. Sounds great. Where are you from?
Good on you mate !!!
How professional. Thank you for playing the song and commenting at the end. Well Done!
I remember when this started playing on the radio.
First, I love your content and perspective. We are both Vets, American & Scottish, and I truly enjoy your military reaction vids. I encourage you to consider 'Moonshine Bandits'; "Pass Me The Ammo" I believe you will feel the emotion and military pride it espouses. Thank you for a great channel.
I discovered your channel watching your reaction to "Am I the Only One". So happy I found your channel and have been going through your videos. Can't wait to see more!
And Don after 50+ years still has his great voice. This is showing how we all put things and people in a box today instead of being open and loving to others. We had great talks at church while I was in high school to its meaning, and it is even more relevant today. Love this version!
An American classic made even classier! So AWESOME!
Home Free is amazingly versatile, think you'd enjoy "God Bless The USA" a Lee Greenwood cover or Johnny Cash cover "Ring of Fire" or his "Folsom Prison Blues", then there's "Workin' For A Livin'" a Huey Lewis cover, then for a giggle there's Home Free's own "Champagne On A Beer Budget" so many to choose from, these are only a small sampling of their work. Enjoyed your reaction see you again soon, keep the tunes comin'.
I second this! You CANNOT go wrong with a Home Free song, cover or original.
@@brandyforsythe1882 Amen!
American pie is a classic, a lot of contemporary history in it.

#NoMoreTalkingLetsGo
While most of the lyrics are simple to understand. It is just a tune about a simpler time, some of the words are still very cryptic and people argue about the exact meaning of some of them. Don was asked what does American Pie really mean. He answer simply 'It means I will never have to work another day in my life.' LOL!! I think he wants to keep the meaning (or lack of meaning) a secret. Good reaction.
Thanks you Keith
John Hartford said the same thing about "Gentle On My Mind." :)
My Dad loved Don McLean and I know he would have LOVED LOVED LOVED this one :)
Definitely
When asked in a interview what American Pic meant to him, he laugh and said it meant he didn't have to work any more. Enjoy
🤣
I can’t believe this song is 50 years old and it’s as powerful as it was when it was first released. ❤️🤍💙 🥧
This song brings me to major tears..because I soo remember when these 3 beautiful Rock & Rollers died in that terrible plane crash ..FEB 3rd 1959 !!
We wept for days ...then 50 yrs ago Don McLean wrote this AMAZING TRIBUTE to this tragedy...!!
SO on the 50th yr he released it on FEB 3 ..the anniversary and chose to perform it with HOME FREE !!!
Thx sooo much for reacting...(still crying)
My pleasure
Fabulous! They are so good!
Absolutely
I missed another one and I have my notifications set properly ☺️ Beautiful song. Back in highschool our history teacher would play this song every day and we had to analyze this song.
I'm hoping it will get back to normal soon
Amazing artists
Saw Don McClain sing this in concert when i was 16 at what was then FTU. Now known as UCF.✌💖🙏
I still remember every word, because I was just a kid when I sang it, over and over and over……………..
It shouldn't matter who requested a song, or having their name mentioned. I'm sure you get thousands of request for the same song especially a popular one.
Love this song, Don McLean added some extra that that he said he always wanted in it.
Thanks for the notification, my notification setting was all wrong, its set to all notifications now👍
Brilliant. Thank you
Loved this reaction! Home Free and Don MClean is quite literally perfection! Thank you for your reaction! Stay safe and healthy and have a blessed day!
I was at my doctor so I missed this🥺 I remember requesting it. I’m so excited to watch your reaction!!😀
😉👍🏻
You need to hear home free with Lee Greenword. It will make you cry.
These guys never go wrong.

Awesome. More Home Free and Pentatonix Please. Thx.
Will do
I was in High School. My oldest sister and her fiancé took my friend and I to the local college to hear him perform. It was my first concert ever. I loved it! Have you ever heard of the breakdown of the lyrics to this song? It's very historical, and sad. You may want to try looking it up sometime.
I love this song, the original version. I have one older brother and when this song came out in 1971 he played it over and over on our record player. When I typed record player I laughed so hard… lol 😂…. I can’t believe how old me and my brother are now and we have kids in their 30’s now. I went to the movies with my son a week ago and when we were buying popcorn and drinks the guy thought we were a couple 😂😂… my son said ewwww, man.. this is my mom 😂😂😂😂😂… anyway back to this song, it’s an awesome American iconic song 🎶.
🤣🤣
Love Don McLean and home fries . You mentioned the boxes the men were standing in, I believe they cut this song during Covid lock down . This song is one of many these guys recorded while locked down. I understand the vocals are done at each of their individual homes and the vocals merged together to form many of their songs during Covid nightmare. Please try HomeFrees version of “Sea Shanty” recorded during lockdown. They simply amaze me with their awesome talent and their comical videos. Another good one to react too is their “ buttes remix”. If your not laughing until tears run from your eyes your beyond humor, jus’ kidding’. “ champagne taste on a beer budget’ is another humorously done video. Enjoying your vids, kudos to you.
I enjoyed it this morning shared it and am listening to it again very good 👍 😀.
Thank you very much
So good from the best of the best. Great reaction
Thank you very much
I sure have a lot of catching up to do. Going through a couple back surgeries and have a good amount of spare time now. Glad to see you've been busy with your posts.
Thanks. Hope you're well now?
As usual they're awesome.
100%
Love your reactions. Thank you. Home Free collaborated with Don McClean to record this song in the same recording studio that Don McClean recorded this song in the very first time he recorded America Pie.
My pleasure
Spectacular
Beautiful ❤️... hadn't heard this version. Thank you 💞
Dad used to play this all the time!
😀
@@TheDonsChannel Have a blessed day!
Look at the original too! It's amazing.
Found ya!! Subbed. Patriot Don…. Glad we’ve met you!
Thank you for the song reaction. This song was dedicated to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valenz, and J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). The three men who all died in the same plane Feb. 3, 1959. Buddy Holly had a future to be the best rock and roller singer better than Elvis, as far as I care. Not many people realize that Walan Jennings owns Buddy Holly's guitar. As he was the last man to see him alive that last fateful night. "The Day The Music Died". Did not realize that was Don Mclean in the video.
Thanks!! Keep em coming
Love your reactions! Following you, and enjoying your Home Free and Pentatonix reactions from Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦!!!!!

Released in the year of its 50th anniversary.
Oh my gosh you have a Knights hat!!!! you get the follow for that alone ;)
Song came out my senior year of high school, always been a favorite. This version is great!
It's great
I was a UCLA undergrad at the time, and for me, this song and "Vincent" were love at first listen.
Can I make a request, it's not a military song. But "Take This Job and Shove it" by Johnny Paycheck. It's another great country music song from the 70s. I grew up with that song on a 45 in my family's jukebox we had in my home growing up in Viriginia.
And remember he is over 70 years old!
No one can do it like the original…Don McClean

Just subscribed. great to hear a Scottish accent just wondering if you have heard Jimmy Barnes a Scottish born Australian singer if not any chance you could react to Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa doing Stone Cold. If you have heard him what did you think?
Look forward to see which videos you review around 9/11. Alan Jackson, Daryl Worley, Toby Keith, and certainly Lee Greenwood/Home Free would be at the top of the list.
Thank you very much Patrick

Love this song. The first song id learn all the words to! Do you know what this song is about???? The death of Buddy Holly. The Big Bopper and Richie Valenze who died in a plane crash. Forgive me for my typos. Its a pet peeve of mine, and yet i do it. Ughhh p.S. there is also a movie called Labamba. Which depicts this event.
I never knew that. Thanks Renee
It wasn't Elvis it was Buddy Holly. That was a very sad day! Loved the movie LaBamba!
