Hey Larry, missed you covering Home Free. Trust me they are more than "country music"...yes they do cover that genre but they are so much more. Don reached out to them, to help him celebrate his ICONIC song's 50th anniversary (this was released Oct 24th, 1971) and Don had a big hand in the video making. The video boxes were his idea & they used family films from his childhood, so they are very personal to Don himself.

Considering Don got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following them doing this, and he invited Home Free to attend and even perform, I think that's the answer to what Don thinks of HF and their talents!

Adam did this all in 1 take (if I remember right) and almost passed out. This was done during quarantine. Don was in Tennessee so him, Tim, and Austin did it at the studio there Chance recorded his on CA, Rob went into Darren Rusts studio in MN, and Adam R recorded his at home in his studio.
When Don got his Hollywood Star last year he invited Home Free (they did a shirt verse of this) and Weird Al. Don has said he's almost sang Weird Al's version of this. Don's kids love Weird Al's version. If you haven't heard it you should listen to it.
Also, it's been said that Don wants to collaborate with Home Free Again. I hope they can 🙂🙂

I second the vote that I have missed you doing more HomeFree. They definitely are not just a country group. Theirs so much more to them with all the different genres. But even the country songs are always an upgrade over the originals. These are very talented musicians who don't need instruments because they have Adam and Tim who can fill in whatever is needed sound wise. Please continue down the HomeFree road .I'll bet they grow on you like they do most people. They also have great collaborations with other stars. Thanks for the great reaction. 🦋🥀🦋🥀🦋

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean just received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them. "American Pie" pays tribute to the loss of 3 young legends who died so young (Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper). A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others.

HF are definitely professionals. By this time, HF had already partnered with Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Lee Greenwood, and now Don McLean. All idols of theirs. They really know how to allow and make the original artist 'shine' by always being so respectful with their arrangements. They say they always felt blessed to be able to partner with "The Greats". We Fries are very proud! They've also been invited to sing the National Anthem twice at the Minnesota Vikings games (since that was HF's original home and 2 of the members still live there). There are videos out there for all of them except Charlie Daniels; they never got to do a video with him as he fell sick during that time. They've also been invited to the CMA Awards; not to perform though (and are members), have also been invited to Nashville's huge CMA Fest for several years in a row, and invited to The Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry multiple times. Those last three are huge honors because they get to sing among Nashville's royalty and are very tough gigs to get. I also never liked country, just like you, but HF has changed my world! 😉 They have introduced me to other bands that I truly love today, but would never have considered before. Keep listening... you'll see what I mean.

Remember Home Free leans country but they can cover many genres. They have a great R &B cover of Boyz2Men song END OF THE ROAD I think you would like. A rock cover of U2’s I STILL HAVEN’T FOUND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR by Peter Hollens featuring Home Free is another great non country song. They show so much respect to the older artists they cover. They do outstanding covers of "God Bless the USA" with Lee Greenwood, and "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with Kenny Rodgers shortly before he passed away. They also do "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys, but that might be just a little too country for you. However, their take on "Folsom Prison Blues" is whole lot less country than Johnny Cash's. With the memories images, I think there is a connection somehow in there. I noticed behind Adam (when you said the images were weird) it is an anatomy diagram of the mouth and throat - basically the mechanics of beatboxing. I am going to have to go back through it and see if there are any other subtle connections in the memory boxes. Also at the end, the background vocals make it sound like a prayer or hymn. The respect is palatable. I know I had heard that Tim had reached out to Don a few years ago about doing the song and he had given his approval but for whatever reason, Home Free didn't do it then. So when the 50th anniversary of the song came up, Don contacted them about doing it now. And magic happened. When Don got his star, he requested Weird Al and Home Free to be there.

So is his Vincent.

Are you from anywhere near Grand Rapids? We lived in Southwest Michigan for over 40 years. So glad you
have Home Free a chance on this collaboration with Don. One of the things I like best about Home Free is
the way they approach social issues through music.
Not sure if you have reacted to those Home Free videos. Immigration, suicide, bigotry, they are all there.
Make sure you listen to Tim's statement at the end of
"Everybody's Walken' This Land". Stay well.

Hey larry, would you ever consider looking into the MTV Unplugged series, which takes popular artists of the 90's and gets them to play acoustic versions of their songs on live TV.
I'd love if you ever watched Pearl Jam's performance of "Black" on Unplugged.
Your openness to new and old music alike is why I think you'll appreciate it.
I'll leave the link below if your interested:

All these people keep going on and on about how great PTX is but look how man STARS have asked HF to collab with them on their songs. Don McClean, The Oak Ridge Boy,, Alabama and Lee Greenwood just to name a few.

Thank you for reacting to this classic! When I saw your very first Home Free reaction (One Man Band) I thought this would hit your sweet spot with following comment: "For this reactor I recommend American Pie with Mister Don McLean Himself." I look forward to more Home Free reax from you! One collab that I love a lot is "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with Kenny Rogers. It is absolutely delightful and again they allowed the star to shine while being flawlessly amazing in their own right.

We get it. Most Country is all about drinking, partying, fornicating, dogs, cheating and revenge. Doesn't help that the sleazy pop culture has taken it over. HF does a great job of reviving a lot of the old classics that made country amazing.
Don invited them to do the 50th anniversary edition because he trusted them to do it justice. He sang the main parts then let them fill in around him. If you haven't seen Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys, that one is also a classic from the 80s that I grew up on. HF has such a respect for the original artists. Look up Star of Bethlehem and Christmas in Dixie where they team up with Alabama and Oak Ridge Boys. They also did The Gambler with Kenny Rogers and Dolly Pardon was thrilled to let them do To the Moon and Back and they absolutely blew us away with it. You have to check it out.

    Just a phenomenal reaction.
I like the upbeat feel, but the somber tone of the lyrics always wrenches you.
Thanks again. Keep going on Home Free. Maybe Fishin in the Dark for an older fun one. Also recommend Champagne Taste and Hillbilly Bone for upbeat fun ones. They're country-ish, but not overly so. It'll help your progression. The former is an original.

Larry, I wanta sit down and talk with you about Don McLean and American Pie. =) I just watched the Grand Rapids “Event” very impressive. All the little side show tid bits - the flames on the bridge, I had to rewind and watch that again. Thanks for the recommend.
Back to your reaction video, I discovered Home Free by watching this video. I’d been RUclips surfing and saw that McLean was singing a current version of American Pie. After playing it a few times, I started looking for information on this backup group, Home Free. Hahaha
I sang this song over and over with my friend in the 70s. I never got tired of it. I’ve listened to it at least 10 times since watching your video. Don’s voice is still sharp. After listening to the other versions of him singing this song, you can tell his voice has aged, but in a great way. Love it.
I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but, Home Free sang at McLean’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. This video starts when they guys are singing. You can back it up and hear their intro, or go back further and listen to Wierd Al.

I found this commentary/documentary on McLean and American Pie, I think you will like it.

I love this song, but I can't help but hear the Weird Al version every time I hear it since I heard Al's parody first. "Oh my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry"

I see you've reacted to Home Free and Pentatonix, but not Voiceplay. You should definitely check them out. They are my favorite acapella group. And the bass, Geoff Castellucci, has a lot of solo songs too.

I am not a particular fan of Country either, but I love his voice, how he uses it, and the plain simple appeal of this song .

This is one of my favourite songs since it came out in 1971. This rendition with home free is amazing also. They haven't changed much in the song, which is good as far as I am concerned, but the backing just adds a wonderful depth to it. Have you done a reaction to Home Free's How Great Thou Art, if so I can't seem to find it. The harmonies are beautiful I think you would enjoy it.. Thank you for sharing.

American Pie is an anthom. Don sought Home Free on this 50th anniversary, not to make it better, but to pay it an homage. The song is a tragic story along with the changes that came. This is not Elvis`s "Viva Las Vegas". You lost me. Stop taking the chewables.

I love ya larryshair, but I hate to say it, this is one time I was getting very very annoyed at you stopping the video, it seemed like, every few seconds. I realize your thing is to comment on different aspects of the songs, and most of the time I really like your comments, but this was overkill. I was hollering and cussing at ya, every time you stopped. I'd just be getting back into it, and bam. gggrrr LOL
As far as your memory of the song being more somber, it only was at the beginning and the end, just like they did it. It might just sound more upbeat because of the added voices and the way the beat boxing sounds.

I know the original. Don's voice has aged, of course. But it seems like the group can take the sound back to where the original was.
I have never listened to this-- the original is so good, such a part of my youth, that I was afraid of them ruining it. But they add so much. Excellent stuff...
