The Season 5 Finale of Rick and Morty just aired, and despite enjoying it quite a bit I wanted to discuss an issue I've had with it that I'm worried about with the show going forward, and it's that I worry Rick and Morty is becoming too meta for its own good.

I actually mentioned this in a different video how the original writers very clearly hate doing canon storylines, and that it was a very smart decision to bring new and young writers for season 5, and clearly they were the ones behind the S5 Finale. Then in droves Rick and Morty fans came in and defended the Harmon boys saying stuff like "You don't get it, bro. The Writers CLEARLY LOVE the canon, they put their HEART AND SOUL into EVERY MINUTE DETAIL! It's the NEW WRITERS FAULT for how SHIT the show is now! We need the old writers BACK!" and it's like??? I've never felt any sort of love for the canon of the series whatsoever. I'll never forget that comic strip where he talks a girl out of suicide. He sits her down, takes her away from there, and distracts her before eventually giving this speech about life. Seriously, it's gotten to a point where it pisses me off. Like, if they don't want an overarching storyline, that's fine, but don't put shit in like that and then mock people for getting excited about it or frustrated with them for getting impatient after not addressing it for two or more seasons.
That aside, I'm kind of aching for a new adult show that's serialized. I mean, god, how many adult animated shows now are episodic and don't have any sort of overarching story or character development? Family Guy, The Simpsons, American Dad, Rick and Morty. The only recent adult-oriented animated show I can think of is Final Space. (Feel free to let me know about others) South Park is the closest one, since even they occasionally do arcs in their seasons. But how come the only animated shows that feel like they can and want to tell important stories are always the ones oriented mainly at families or kids? How come Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Regular Show, and Infinity Train are confident enough to introduce new elements and build on their world and make it feel like it matters and it's important, and can take it seriously, but supposedly "uber-intelligent" shows like Rick and Morty aren't?

It's like that's their petty revenge, they give you what you want because they acknowledge that's how they're gonna be the most successful, but ruin it by having Rick shout "I'm not real. Stop caring. Idiot."
I also think they do this by trying really hard to ruin the concept of Rick and Morty being singular characters. I think this is most apparent in episodes like Never Ricking Morty and Mortyplicity, which both seem to try and hammer home the idea of "you, the audience, will literally never know if the Rick and Morty you're watching are the same people they were in other episodes", even saying "C-137" doesn't guarantee it anymore because they might just be a toy version or decoy of the real one. It's the show saying "Fuck you. None of this matters. They're not real", hell, in the season 5 finale, they kill Morty on screen. He gets split in two, made red for one scene, and the other half of him is a joke about influencers, but ultimately I think it's just another way to try and tell the audience not to care.

I think this video brings up a really good discussion. I honestly don’t dislike the meta humor because I like to have a look into the mindset of the writers, and see where their heads are at. I didn’t think any of it was all too intrusive, so I really haven’t thought of how this could be detrimental to people’s enjoyment on the show. I hope now that the characters have hit somewhat of a “reset” we can see a less jaded, yet still developed Morty, and a much less godly Rick. Good video. Big pp.

I really REALLY struggled with the Season 5 finale, and I'm kind of reassured to find I wasn't the only one.
Can't argue with the point about deconstructing characters - especially in a show that had only been running for a couple of years. And digs at The Fans aggravate me because a) shitting on those fans always seems kind of nasty; and b) I'm *not* that kind of fan, so those jokes/references don't land with me at all. No one in my sphere was rage-debating about what will happen with Evil Morty, so that's just noise to me.
I don't know if this is even meta-humour anymore - it just comes off as contempt, which can be endearing when I'm sure it's not sincere. It gave me flashbacks to Sherlock, and to hbomberguy's criticisms of it. The long aimless flashback sequence came off as grudging, and kind of joyless as a result - because, as you say, if you don't want to tell big lore stories, just don't tell them.
Fan service is supposed to be fun, but this came off as bitter fan service - like the writers want us to feel guilty for being invested because we're somehow forcing them to write a show they don't want to write... except we're not. Writers acting like they HAVE to do what The Fans demand, while implying that they might totally have better ideas that we're forcing them NOT to write, is crass... and makes me wonder if they actually did want to do this stuff, but wanted it to be unpredictable.

But hey at least it turned out Rick had a plan to break up Beth and Jerry so there was a twist to it. If I saw THIS stuff I’d be fuming holy crap. Honestly, I feel like episodic adventures would be totally fine if they actually kept the quality of those episodes as they did in the first seasons. Episodes about the purge, about Rick's battery, about the cloud monster that Morty tried to save, about memory parasites, they were all amazing. They didn't connect to any kind of bigger story and it was totally fine, because they were so good on their own. But now we get episodes about dragons being horny and giant sperm with incest babies, and we, as an audience, get criticized for wanting anything more than that. Not all episodes are like this, of course (we still have S4E1 and Vat of Acid episode), but I feel like their general quality really tanked during the later seasons and if that's all they have to offer on average, then this show isn't really worth attention anymore.
The funniies thing is that even "canonical" episodes such as Evil Morty one were also good on an episodic level, that joke about a chair ordering a pizza with white people and hispanic on half is still one of my favorites in the show.

Now Season 5 finale is definitely the worst toilet flush. It is rushed in terms of pacing, does not answer many questions, completely shatters the intrigue of Evil Morty's plan to restore the Citadel (oh, wow, he was not a complex villain who has ambitions to completely change the rules of the game for what he believes to be the right cause. He just wanted to use everyone and leave in a stupid shitshow). That's not even talking about such important moments as Rick's backstory (after all of that secrecy and the most banal backstory turning out to be a decoy just to convince the federal agents, the most banal story turns out to be true. Sheer dissapointment), Evil Morty's motivation, etc being shoved down our throats without a possibility of stopping for a second and contemplating what had just happened.
When I watched season 4 I thought the series was recovering, having the new great episodes one after another. When the Sperm and Demon episodes of Season 5 aired, I still thought it could be just a bad phase and this does not mean the series is dying. But this finale... To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. With the point about Morty being jaded, the Venture Brothers handles that aspect really well. Dean and Hank remain somewhat naive and optimistic throughout the series (or as far as I've watched haha) remaining a contrast from the more jaded characters of the show. Meanwhile Dr Venture allows the exploration of the effects constant day to day adventuring would do a kid in reality, while keeping his character consistent.
I know Rick and Morty couldn't really do the same thing considering the characters already In place, but it sucks. Seeing Morty so cynical and used to the multiverse just removes the fun of the series with a "been there done that" attitude and contributes to my biggest problem of the show that none of the characters feel like themselves and flip flop constantly as Mark said.

I personally enjoyed the show for it’s lore. Not in the sense that I want every episode to be entirely plot driven, but something I adored about the older seasons was how dynamic the characters felt.
Season 2 gave Rick a very interesting character arc and showed us how he is struggling to cope with forming connections and how it continually backfires on him. We also get some neat background lore about Rick’s relationship with the federation in episodes like, "Mortynight Run," where Morty crashes his ship into a federation outpost, "Auto Erotic Assimilation" where Unity tells Rick it wants to partner with the federation, to which Rick isn’t too thrilled about, and "Get Schwifty" where Bird Person and Tammy make an appearance before the grand finale where she betrays BP and takes over Earth, forcing the smith family to flee to a new planet.
It’s this kind of writing that I really enjoyed about the show. It wasn’t too on the nose and didn’t try as hard to be meta. Sure, they would slip in a few meta jokes here and there like when Summer shuts off the tv broadcasting federation news before acknowledging it was done for dramatic effect, but that didn’t take away from the plot of the episode.
I also feel like season 3 kind of disregarded what made the first two seasons good by having Rick regress after his sacrifice and getting rid of the federation within a single episode. I feel like the alien ridden Earth we see at the end of season 2 really could’ve changed the status quo of the show and offered some interesting episodes. And I really noticed how excessive the meta humor was getting by season 3 to the point where the characters no longer felt interesting since they would consistently make self referential jokes that deterred from the plot. Something that I saw bleed into season 4 with the story train episode.
Whether Dan Harmon likes it or not, the show definitely had a stronger focus on lore in the older seasons, and the older writers were fantastic at it.

Rick and Morty is gonna become one of those shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons where each season just keeps dropping in quality

I agree that the excess of meta humor ruins some of the serious or important moments on the show, but I disagree that the show “doesn’t care” or doesn’t want to do lore because they obviously put a lot of care and attention to the existing lore and story (for the most part at least). However, you definitely make a good point about how the meta humor negatively affects those major moments that could otherwise be great.

Morty's development I feel is perfect. I have to disagree with your view on it. Morty becoming far more independent than he used to be in Season 5 I feel helped pace it better. If it happened earlier, I feel like it would have been pretty rushed. The Season 5 finale showed that Morty still has a lot to learn about Rick AND himself, and I'm glad they didn't rush it so fast.
Morty was never going to stay the same after Season 3. I feel like he flip-flops in your eyes because he's still trying to figure out why Rick is the way he is and why Morty is the way he is. Morty's still a teenager, and he still has a lot of growing up to do, but if Season 5 shows anything, it's that Morty is going to change dramatically soon, and I feel the way they showed that is honestly pretty logical and entertaining.
    But to each their own.

Tag along grandson who is the straight man, biggest jerk in the world who has a contingency for every situation, Bratty older sister, prick mother, spinless prick father. Yep. You did it. You summed up all my issues with current Rick and Morty.
I hate it how the show flip flops between one of episodes that rely on one joke (the Mortiplicity episode) and then do episodes with a dump of lore and backstory that we're suddenly meant to care about when the writers clearly don't.

I think the trick with meta humor is that it has to be meaningful. To use an example related, like season 6 where Rick broke the fourth wall to basically attempt to counteract the nihilism that Rick has popularized by telling the audience that they matter.

Literally the captain planet episode ended sad and when it did end without the joke I legit said "What the fuck" and it actually impacted me and made me connect and feel for Morty, But this was somewhat of a episodic episode and the season finally was incredibly lore heavy but didn't feel seirous at all.

I disagree with the opinion that Season 3 is the worst and that the citadel episode was the best in that season. I'm a little biased because i started watching show right after sheshuan sauce drama, so S3 was my first season, and it's been a while since I saw it, but I feel like season 5 is actually the weakest. First 3 and last 3 episodes are actually pretty bonkers (altho they still have some bad stuff in them, mostly ep.3 with the whole B-plot), but the middle 4 are medieocre at best, and single worst episode of entire series at worst. Also most of your criticizm in this video is valid, and that's also why season5 is even weaker imo. While i couldnt point my finger on it in most situations, it always felt weird when there was a reference thrown in the script for no apparent reason.
