Shutter lag can be avoided with half press of shutter before actual shutter actuation, which is like muscle memory for camera users nowadays, so not really a problem
He's pointing out the issue with the inability to manually set shutter or aperture settings...or even tell what they are. There is no display that gives you any feedback. It's a legitimate miss on a camera at this price.
@@35mmOn35mmyeah exactly. It's a slightly more manual version of a point and shoot camera. It's priced well compared to cameras of its type historically (corrected for inflation) and it doesn't really have any similar competition in the new camera market for now. It would be like saying that it's a "miss" for a Fiat 500 to not have a higher towing capacity, when that is clearly not what that car is intended for.
Making a review of a product without actually using the product and then showing old photos you shot over half a decade ago, you need to great in the real world son. Tell you what go buy the camera put a few rolls through it them make proper review rather than an opinion piece.
I have the camera and there is no delay when taking a picture. I think your remark is therefor not correct. What I think what happened is that during test focus zone modes the camera needed to switch. For example macro to infinite. Even though the camera does switch lens distances in a blink of an eye, it adds to the time before it shoots. Ones you remain in that mode, you shoot instantly.
You can see the shutter operating in the "Shoot Film like a Boss" review* between about 8 and 10 minutes in. There does not appear to be any significant shutter lag. The camera is not for me as it is half frame, but I understand why Ricoh went down that route. It looks like a lot of fun to shoot, and that is surely the point of compact film cameras - fun. Had it been FF I would be very interested indeed and, as the Analogue Wonderland review points out, it looks like the half frame is created by applying a mask to a FF body, which means that if it is successful we may well see a FF version. Though Ricoh might have to hurry up with the Mint Rollei coming soon. The only problem with the controls is the Auto setting. This implies it should be the default setting - it should not. P should be the default setting. It would have been better if they called the Auto setting a landscape mode instead. As to the price, it may seem steep, but I doubt that a new camera could have been made much cheaper without compromising quality. It is unfair to compare it to the price of some old film cameras, as frankly there are none quite like it, and in any event many old PAS film cameras of moderate or premium quality go for quite a lot these days, and their reliability cannot be guaranteed. *Having seen the SFLAB, AW and Peta Pixel reviews, the first is the best IMO.
Many labs exist that develop, print or scan. For example, TheDarkroom charges $23 for 36 exp color developed, scan and printed. For half frame it's $29. So per image it's cheaper but more per roll outlay. I don't have a problem with the price. A 1960's Olympus Pen ran in the $50 range...equal to $500 is 2024 dollars. Comparing 20-40 year old cameras to a new camera isn't a fair comparison. I just bought an Olympus Pen EED for $110 and it's in good working condition. It doesn't come with a warranty. Parts aren't available and service options are sketchy at best. I can understand the starting price of $500... Maybe I'll get one when it's down to $425...hopefully around Christmas.
This thing sounds like a hot mess. You lost me when you described the semi-auto misguidedness - worst of all worlds; you have a camera that requires some manual input (to appeal to your vanity / sense of achievement, fill in as required) and some automatic input (to actually help you out) but in a way that no one has experience in using. So, if you're a newbie, you don't know how to use it and if you ask anyone for help - they don't either. If it ain't broke', why fix it? I'm struggling to understand this thing or who it's supposed to be for. Will be interesting to see how it is in real life and how things play out for this one. Did these guys drink from the same wine barrel as those behind the Lumix S9 - I don't want what they're having! ...erm. I just watched the Peta Pixel review - I think I get it now... I think. Do I? Do you?
I can pick up used bodies at estate disables for $100 and less. Sometimes nice kits for $20 bucks. The price of this camera should have been lower if they really wanted to get young people on board. As their income grows they would buy more expensive models. And have brand loyalty.
I would have picked a film camera again for around $250. But for $500 I’m just not that interested in trying film again for that much money. But who knows if enough hipsters buy them then get bored could get a great deal.
If you want to shoot film, WAY under $500 will get you a world class camera that people would have killed for back when film ruled the world. People that shot film and moved fully into digital won't be the target market for this camera that gives so little control over the important things real photographers care about... shutter, aperture and true confirmed focus. And people curious about film and wish to try it as an experiment can do so with real cameras for way less money. After the realization of the expense and hassle of film, not to mention the lack of instant gratification that younger people have come to expect, the film experiment might not last long enough to justify the $500 expense.
Like you Tudor I feel Pentax have made a bold move but it seems they have forgotten how to build film cameras if you remember the k1000 or P30t from 30 years ago simple to understand strong basic film cameras ideal to learn on ok the 17 half frame makes sense film prices manual film advance and manual focus why do you need such a battery? What's wrong with lr44's then complicated exposure modes??? What's wrong with f no's and film speeds + A mode fixed lens ok 25mm good choice but why so slow surely f2.4 was possible seems to me the designer had never seen a film camera and an ex employee of Pentax described it to him down the phone but it was a bad line nice try Pentax but look into your own archives for inspiration
Apreciate the iniciative. But again what I hate in japanese companies, and to be honest I saw this coming... they refuse to keep things as they are proven and are allways looking for a change, and looking at how the camera market is headed its more a tech race instead of actually giving the users what they like or is actually beneficial for the job. It was the chance to give something nostalgic for those who like the experience of film cameras in a fraction of a leica price. I dont get it why is there an advance film lever and manual asa and then go with white and golden p modes. Even if it turn out to be interesting (wich I sincerly I doubt) imho it wasnt the time nor the product for such a bold move
Maybe, but it's the R&D. Designing a new film camera for the first time in 20 years. They probably had to hire all new engineers, or drag some out of retirement.

Good point
I own the Pentax 17 and shot 2 films so far. I do not experience any shutter lag problem.
That's great news 👍
Come back with a review when you have actually used the camera.

@@robertkornwho needs to see shutter speed when it’s all automatically determined…. If you want a dedicated shutter dial this cameras just not for you

Skip to 11:10 to see what he doesn't like about the P17.
Is it me or are there no sample photos from the camera, so far every photo predates the camera.

Pentax should release a GRiii Monochrom with the same sensor as the K3 Monochrome, that will get the moths out of my wallet for sure
Yesss ;))

I've looked now, yes, the review is very good. Thanks.
You have some great pics there & you are spot on. If there is a lag time like that, it will be a deal killer.
We got a brand new film camera before the GR4.

Yah I’ll stick with my F3 that I got for half the price of this joke of a camera.

This channel is like the Alibaba version of camera review channels 😂
And you are like the temu of commenters 😅
Maybe so, a little cringy but makes some valid points here!
The only problem this camera has, is that its 200EUR too expensive. 300EUR maybe, but 500EUR. No way in hell...
600 dollars and NO AUTOFOCUS
thats all I needed to know to not want it
i would buy it if it is a full 35mm and not 2 x 17 on a frame
Excellent video 😊!
Thank you very much!

This camera is over-hyped. I would get a Nikon FM or FE with a nice lens.
Not sure where you heard about the alleged delay but i saw the same petapixel review and countless of others and there was no mention!
I've indicate the time frame in my video. Also check the comment from Richard Hale in the comments here for more information on the subject.

SUPER TARE TUDORE !
Just wait a few months and these things will be all over eBay for half price
i'll pass, would rather use my K1000 instead. 👍✌🙏
dont forget max shutter speed is 1/350 only, lol
Yesss.. another big limitation
This is a leaf shutter, different limitations. Benefit is that leaf shutters sync well with a flash.

It is about £400 too expensive
