Great video and thank you for showing off those prints, some videos have been less than favourable when it comes to the picture quality. But that could just be the stock they’re using. Aside from HP5 what other stocks are ideal for gloomy UK weather? I’m very new to film photography so the sheer number of different stocks and their use cases is slightly intimidating! 😮 I’m mostly hoping to shoot street, nature and perhaps friends and family at occasions etc. I know they’re not the cheapest cameras, but half frame is ideal for keeping costs down and I feel almost obligated to support this project and show other manufacturers aside from Pentax that there’s a real demand for new film cameras. There’s such a lovely feel to film that even with my underexposed first roll of Kodak you can’t really replicate I feel digitally.
Hey Timmy, thanks so much for the kind words! 😊 Great question! With this gloomy weather, you'll definitely need a bit more light, so I'd recommend film with an ISO of 400 or higher. For a moody, atmospheric look - perfect for street photography - any B&W film would be a solid choice. For colour shots of people or special occasions, Kodak UltraMax is a great budget-friendly option, while Kodak Portra 400/800 or CineStill 400D/800T are better quality but on the expensive side. Where do you get the shutter times for the non flash modes from? I couldn’t find them in the manual. Do you know if the camera will go longer than 1/30th in Bokeh Mode?
Unfortunately not, but there is an aux cable hole for long-distance shutter tripping using the Pentax CS-205 Cable Switch. We'll be getting some in stock soon 😊
I wonder if you can clarify the "white moon" setting's aperture. You say it does f/16 to force a slow shutter speed, and I get the logic there. But Pentax describes the mode as "ideal for twilight photography," hence the moon icon. And for twilight photography, f/16 would make no sense. From the manual, I'd assume that this mode simply *allows* slower shutter speed (slower than the 1/30 that the P mode presumably stops at) as needed in low light. The PetaPixel video review seems to have a similar take, saying that this mode uses a f/3.5 aperture. So the question is whether this mode simply *allows* a slower shutter speed (and therefore generally a twilight-friendly large aperture), or if it *forces* a slower shutter speed (and therefore a small aperture). The latter interpretation seems at odds with Pentax' "twilight" wording. (This seems to me an important distinction, since if you're right, the crescent-moon mode is the one to choose for landscapes with foreground detail. If my interpretation and that of PetaPixel is correct, than you'd probably want the Auto mode and its hyperfocal focusing for such shots.) Have you heard anything direct from Pentax for where you got your interpretation? Thanks!
I'm curious about how Pentax set the camera program. We all knew that: Aperture: F3.5 - F16 Shutter: 4s - 1/350s 1. When set to no flash P mode, when it is in low light, will it limit the shutter at 1/30s and warn you it is insufficient light, or it will go all the way down to 4s? 2. When set to Bokeh mode, using ISO 400 film under sunny day, will it shoot at F3.5 with 1/350s, or it will shoot at F16 with 1/350s? 3. When set to no flash Night mode, will it always prioritize shutter to 4s? or any range?
I need a shutter speed dial, an aperture ring, and an ISO dial, a flash sync port and manual focus. I don't need auto modes or built in flash. It looks like they've tried to simplify the camera by making it more complicated, I like everything else, but the user interface is no good for me. It's a pity because I really wanted to like the camera, but I don't.
I've seen a few articles and videos about this wonderful NEW 35mm camera, the biggest moan, yeh you guessed, the price. For those moaning about the price, watch this video. The Pentax 17 wreaks of high build and lens qualty, a lot of thought has gone into the design and engineering of the Pentax 17. I predict that the Pentax 17 is going to be in demand, regardless of price. We now have a new film path to go down. Personally I'm really liking the Pentax 17.
by the way, half frame is print quality, not digital scanning quality. - Print depends on film quality, and lens sharpness . - But if you still want to measure it, from one realy comprenhesnive review of the film vs digital - on the internet - film resoilutin transfered to digital, was around 100-120 MPX - So the half frame would be at least 50 mpx
Los que comentan que por ese dinero pueden comprar una cámara vieja mejor es que no han entendido nada. Ojalá tenga éxito esta Pentax 17. Su mayor defecto es un precio un poco elevado.
Gosh. It uses "modern electronics" but they couldn't figure out how to put auto or rangefinder focusing in there? I don't feel like carrying a tape measure everywhere so I can estimate distance.
If you had bought a camera in 1985 for $150 you would have been paying $450 in today’s dollars. And considering what you would have gotten them for that price, this is a nice camera. Pentax could have saved money with a wheel to advance the film and done other things, but they chose features on purpose for their tactility. I can appreciate that. :-)
The Pentax 17 certainly isn't a £500 camera, and anyones money would be better spent on a refurbed Olympus Pen, EE, Canon Demi etc etc. The leftover money would keep you in film for a while and pay for processing. I'll stick with my Olympus trip (from new), Olympus Pen EE, Ricoh FF1 and Canon Dial 35 thanks ....
Just to put things into context: A brand new smart phone can easily cost you over $USD1000. After 6 months, the value on the used market will drop to about 50% of new. After three years it will be down to 10% of new - making less expensive than a brand new phone with fewer features. This is the place to save money and I have done it multiple times. I also have lots of experience with finicky 60 year film cameras - hard pass on this idea. Meanwhile, I could see the Pentax 17 as a companion to my M7 - especially in places known for theft.
£500 for that rubbish. They could have made a wonderful 35mm camera for film enthusiasts, but instead they made a camera that's worth no more than £99. Pentax think again!
Let’s say you went on holiday and used this camera to capture your time abroad. 10 rolls of cheap/ normal everyday film would probably cost you about £120.00 Then developing and scanning, another £12.00 per roll. So that’s £120.00 for 10 rolls. And these estimations are probably on the low side. So you’ve spent £240.00 by the time you get back your photos and scanned. 720 / 240 = 3. So for every three shutter button presses it cost £1.00 So 100 rolls or 7200 shutter actuations will cost you £2,400.00 = $3,000.00 US. Taking into consideration that this is half frame, normal 35mm is going to cost you almost double, and imagine if you shoot Portra film which costs double of normal film. Conclusion: don’t be a mug, film is dead. It’s just too damn expensive, and this is from a film shooter of over 35 years.
Film isn't dead at all, and medium/large format is still objectively better than anything digital. Which to me is the problem with this little toy camera. It does nothing that any rudimentary digital camera can't do better, plus you get the expense and inconvenience of film. So what is the point of this thing? Just the grainy half frame aesthetic?
Piece of junk for 550 EURO. For half-frame film camera is too high. Shutter Speed 1/350 to 4 seconds.... Manual winding and rewinding....Zone focusing. One of the strangest camera ever made...
How much did you expect a new camera to cost? If it was flea market prices, like most film cameras, then it would be less valuable than a plastic lomography toy.
@@wonsVAA we are not in 81 anymore, we have so much other choice today than this camera, it's a very niche market and yes i prefer and old m42 camera for 30 bucks and spend the money on film and travel...
1) cuz new film shooters will not be happy with this quality. This type of quality is more for aged shooters who know that details don’t matter all the time. The new shoot wants details . That’s why they switch to MF in no time. 2) you already have the Olympus pen f which is the Leica of SLR. It’s beautiful, smaller with interchangeable lenses. Which are sharp too. You can’t go wrong with that. 3) the price of 500$ !!!
I have seen many RUclipsr's talk about this piece of expensive junk. Its a half-frame which limits the size of prints, made of plastic, fixed focus, and its just a over glorified cheap 110 camera of the past. I guess in 2024 Youtuers get excited over cheap film cameras. Too bad there is no creativity on RUclips and every one talks about the same product and hypes up products that are junk. No I not buy this Pentax 17 film and I would rather buy a 35mm that is 30,40, or 50 years old because I can get full frame, interchangeable lenses, a light meter, and many other accessories. If I was to get a 1/2 frame I would look for a Olympus 1/2 frame which has the same accessories I mentioned above.
They've all been sent free copies so obviously they will keep the reviews on the positive. Realistically you can get a Olympus Pen refurbed for far less. I think Pentax may of shot themselves in the foot with the asking price.
Yes you have half the frame to work with so will get visible grain and loss of sharpness much sooner than with full 35mm frame. Still fine for small prints but no good for larger ones.
Really depends on the sharpness and grain of the film you use. I've shot plenty of slide in half frame and they look amazing, barely distinguishable from regular full frame shots unless you zoom in a lot.
Depends on what film you're using how it's developed and of course if you're going to scan the negative and then print from the scan or print directly from the negative. 7x5 or 9x6 should be easy enough straight from the negative. But a properly taken image developed and scanned correctly so you can print at 300dpi should allow you to go larger. and how large will depend on the scanner and what it's maximum resolution is.

I predict that the Pentax 17 is going to be in demand, regardless of price. We now have a new film path to go down. Personally I'm really liking the Pentax 17.
AGAT 18k - version 2 ))
by the way, half frame is print quality, not digital scanning quality.
-
Print depends on film quality, and lens sharpness .
-
But if you still want to measure it, from one realy comprenhesnive review of the film vs digital - on the internet - film resoilutin transfered to digital, was around 100-120 MPX
-
So the half frame would be at least 50 mpx
I knew it!
Good guess 😁
why its so big?
Big? We think it's pretty compact actually - fits nicely in a coat pocket or small bag!
Los que comentan que por ese dinero pueden comprar una cámara vieja mejor es que no han entendido nada. Ojalá tenga éxito esta Pentax 17. Su mayor defecto es un precio un poco elevado.
@@anglo-saxonenglish3565 it's not aimed at you🤦🏼♀️it's the youngsters they are the future not you!
@@anglo-saxonenglish3565 is for young people who use their phones alot to take pictures using the portrait format🙄 not for moaners like you.
These are good prints.
Prints from a Leica Noctilux 0.95 wide open are less sharp than these. Yet they command 10000$.
We were really impressed by the quality!
Get some better sound.
Noted 😊
Smallest aperture in night mode? Don't think so.
What about the video quality’s of it?
This is more like $150 camera at most.
For $500 you can buy an Olympus Pen F half frame, fully serviced probably.
Plastic CRAP for Fancy-Schmancy influencers.
Gosh. It uses "modern electronics" but they couldn't figure out how to put auto or rangefinder focusing in there? I don't feel like carrying a tape measure everywhere so I can estimate distance.
Easy pass when you can get older cameras with higher quality for half the price. What was Pentax thinking….. never mind they weren’t.
“A modern wonder”, as in, I wonder why they ever made this thing.
$500 is way over priced for what your getting. I love what they're trying to do but come on, that is a crazy price tag.
You can have a Bessa L like new with an optic for less than the price of this piece of garbage.
After three years it
will be down to 10% of new - making less expensive than a brand new phone with fewer features.
This is the place to save money and I have done it multiple times. I also have lots of experience
with finicky 60 year film cameras - hard pass on this idea. Meanwhile, I could see the Pentax 17
as a companion to my M7 - especially in places known for theft.
@@mknm1349 Valid point 👆We're not used to buying film cameras new out of the box!
£500 for that rubbish. They could have made a wonderful 35mm camera for film enthusiasts, but instead they made a camera that's worth no more than £99. Pentax think again!
Let’s say you went on holiday and used this camera to capture your time abroad.
10 rolls of cheap/ normal everyday film would probably cost you about £120.00
Then developing and scanning, another £12.00 per roll. So that’s £120.00 for 10 rolls.
And these estimations are probably on the low side.
So you’ve spent £240.00 by the time you get back your photos and scanned.
720 / 240 = 3.
So for every three shutter button presses it cost £1.00
So 100 rolls or 7200 shutter actuations will cost you £2,400.00 = $3,000.00 US.
500$... nope...
How much did you expect a new camera to cost? If it was flea market prices, like most film cameras, then it would be less valuable than a plastic lomography toy.
For context, the 1981 Canon Sureshot or Canon 35AF was sold for $240. That would be about $800 today.
@@wonsVAA Ektar H35N (a new film camera) is around 50 quid. Is this camera going to deliver 10x better output? It should of been closer to £200
@@wonsVAA we are not in 81 anymore, we have so much other choice today than this camera, it's a very niche market and yes i prefer and old m42 camera for 30 bucks and spend the money on film and travel...
@@irresponsiblepictures7451 it is far better
Bad decision from Pentax.
why?
@Answersonapostcard .. Price is foremost.
@@j.k5654 you can’t please everyone
@@j.k5654 I thought the photo prints looked great, personally. How many Pen F's are there available? Old cameras are not going to be around forever.
Agree it is expensive, but my OM10 is made of plastic (and metal) and the Pentax 17 is made of plastic and magnesium alloy (the silver parts). I
Does half frame limit how large you can enlarge your photos? Any one know the ball park range?
EDIT: should have watched the whole video first...
