Such a great piece. Perfect for daily wearing and keeping a low profile. Not as loud and flashy as other Rolexes.
Couldn't agree more!
You and Adrian Barker have described this perfectly. I had a 39mm that I ended up selling. I never wore it, and something just never felt quite right. It was hard to describe, and hard to put your finger on exactly what. But both his video and yours perfectly sum up the new 40mm. I may have to give it a try.
I own the 39mm, it's the perfect size, perfect as my daily wear.
I love mine as well. I admit the 36 has classic proportions and is in so many ways “The Explorer,” but the beauty is now we can all have our pick; vintage 36 check. Modern 39; check. Modern 36; check. Modern 40; check. Modern two tone; unfortunately check (heavy sigh). Quit complaining and buy the one right for you and wear it in good health and cheer.
Perfect for you! 40 is the best. This redesign nailed it. You have all 36mm, 39mm and 40mm now. You should know the best what fits you most which in my opinion is the 40mm.😊
Great review thanks! I have just over a 7" wrist and was in the AD trying on the 36mm and 40mm and the 36mm looked like a woman's watch on me, it just looked odd and the AD said so too. Photos/videos are one thing but the smallness of a 36mm is something that you cannot fully appreciate unless you go and try it on in person. I am also happy that they widened the bracelet because it gives it a more rugged look and separates it from the regular Oyster.
Congrats. Explorer was my first grail and 36mm will always be the perfect size for me. Still love my 114270 I got new.
Yes about time someone uploaded the new explorer 40!🎉
I just got mine from the AD yesterday. Super happy with it. Awesome watch
Thanks for the 39mm v 40mm comparison. I own the new 36mm reference, and I like it, but it IS a bit small for me at times. I also have the 40mm Air King and love how it wears on the wrist, so I am certain the new 40mm Explorer wears very similar. However I agree with your critique on how the text looks crowded at 12 o'clock. I think its fine for the 36mm, but for 40mm, I think it just looks odd. I also prefer the matte dial to the gloss. I've been wanting a 39mm so interested to see your in-depth comparison.
Thanks for your comment! Seems like there is always a tradeoff :) to me the 36mm 114270 was the best explorer, save for the lack of lumed Arabic numerals. Looking forward to making that mk2 comparison for you guys!
Yes, please. Compare the 39 vs 40 mm. Thank you!
Thank you so much. This is the video I’ve been waiting for about the Rolex Explorer I’ve been waiting for. Great job
Glad it was helpful! Looking forward to churning out some more useful and entertaining content :)
Great review, I rock the mark 2, love the Matt face, it looses the flash and gives a more tool aesthetic. Enjoy
Thank you! That’s one of the greatest strengths of the mk2!
I was always a 36mm Rolex guy, OP’s and DJs always but this thing is perfect in person.
Best Understatement Rolex Watch ever….Classic and Looks in 40 mm Perfect…..i Love this one, i go to the AD and give my Order…..thanks great Review
Best 40mm Rolex makes, congrats.
The 36mm is just more aesthetically pleasing to me in size, 40 seems a bit large for wrists smaller than 7inches.
@robertsanchez9972yachtmaster sucks, and it always has. The submariner is better in every way
Personally, I prefer the 36mm 124270, but I'm so glad that the crowd that wanted a bigger Explorer got what they asked for, Rolex making everyone happy for once!
Looks stunning on you btw, wear in good health!
Thank you sir! I couldn’t agree more
124270 is only 35.3mm. It looks too small and dainty on any wrist larger than about 6.5 in
For me, submariner best size is 40mm and best size for explorer is 36mm
Can’t wait for the 39mm and 40mm comparison
Looking forward to making it for you guys too!
Gotta love that initial squeaky clasp that won't last too long :)
Congrats and thanks for the vid. I have a MK 2 and this review answered a lot of questions for me. Appreciate it
Thanks for the video. Will be interesting to see your comparison between the 40 and the MK 2. Seems to me the glossy dial, the thicker crown, the thinner hour hand (?), and the location of the Explorer text, will be the main differences. I’ve owned a MK2 for 5 years now, and although I’m sure the newer model is better, I’m way to attached to mine.
Great video! Would definitely love to see a detailed size comparison video (with measurements) between the 40mm and 39mm Explorer, and I'm sure many others would as well!
The 214270 fits better on your wrist than the new 40mm imho.
The best thing seems to be that they've finally used some AR coating.
I’d love to see a full caliper review to get measurements.
Beautiful watch ! I waited for it so long . I was on the way to buy the mk2 but I will wait for the 224270 . Perfect tool for me . Now , the most difficult is to find one ……😢
Saw this watch in person and I take back my initial comment, looks great
Very excited for this model… appreciate the personal assessment!
At 40mm, the Explorer I’s dial-to-case (and bezel) ratio make it look a bit pancaky. You can pull it off, but the 36mm looked better sized for your wrist, in my opinion. The 124270 certainly didn’t look too small on you, at all. I think the new 40mm will look best on wrists starting at 7.5” (flat wrist) and up, or possibly even 8” (flat wrist) and up. The 36mm 124270 looks properly proportioned on people with a 7” flat wrist or smaller, at least in photos, in my opinion.
Having tried the 36mm a number of times on my flat 7 inch wrist I have to disagree, I’m comfortable with small watches but it’s just too dainty. The 124270 wears more like a 34mm with the bracelet taper. The 40 is the maximum this watch can be in my mind and wears well… though in a perfect world it would cut the difference at 37-38mm or so
No. The 124270 definitely looks way too dainty on a 7 inch wrist. Wears like a 34-35mm ladies watch. In reality, that’s basically what it is since it only measures 35.3.
@@johna797 I agree 100%.
The 36 wears like a 17 and looks like a 21. The 40 is significantly larger and stouter from every aspect--the band is wider, lug width, the crow itself, and its overall ruggedness.
I tried it on, it’s nice at 40mm. 36 was too small for me, even with small wrists, it looked feminine like old timey feminine.
Also the new 40mm seems to utilize the space better, the 39 seems to have a lot of
Negative space
Maybe you need to reevaluate your masculinity
I agree. The 36 was too feminine. Just got the 40 and love it!
@@dinamiena6186 No, I am a man. I don't need to reevaluate it. Maybe you are offended or extra sensitive since I am guessing you have the 36mm, in that case, perhaps you would need to evaluate your own masculinity.
@@paulbonaventura4969 well I wasn’t the one commenting about watch sizes ….
@@dinamiena6186 Ok... in the video it shows and discusses specifically the SIZES ... why would you not expect comments about watch sizes to follow?
I think the 39mm MK2 is definitely the better looking watch. Also, it was a fairly short production run and it will likely be a collectible and valuable model in the future. Now is the time to buy one because the prices will definitely get out of reach down the road.
Love the mk2, miss it. The main advantage of this piece is the new movement but I will agree the mk2 was better proportioned and balanced
@@watchyourstyleHow so, if you don’t mind saying?
I much prefer how the 40mm 224270 is flatter and wider and therefore sits much more flat on the wrist. It also hugs the wrist better as a result. There's an italian guy with a channel called "watch in time" that compares the 39 MK2 with the new 40mm and shows this perfectly. While I definitely prefer the text on the dial on the 39mm MK2, on the wrist, the 40mm just wears better.
@@steelsteez6118 have you tried both of these watches on?? I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “flatter.” The 40mm is about 1/2 mm thicker than the 39.
Why no crown gaurds??? This is supposed to be a tough tool watch, able to handle the rigors of exploring...
Of the around 35 different versions of the Explorer that Rolex have produced since 1953. Something like 30 have had 3 lines with Explorer at the 12 o'clock position.
The “Explorer” with the Crown and 3 row of text is getting too crowded.
The matte dial on the mkii will be a future classic being a 39mm and a short production run.
Great video btw!👍
Always a tradeoff! Glad we Explorer fans can have some choices 😎 thanks very much for your support!
I think it’s a great move, I have a 7.5 inch wrist so I can now get an explorer. Great video
In my opinion it’s to large for this kind of watch so I would prefer the smaller one even with my 7,5 wrist
Sold my Mk2 a few years ago and regretted it ever since… I’m deciding whether to re-buy the Mk2 or buy the new 40 so I’ll be interested in an in depth comparison. Do you have a preference so far?
I’m in the exact same boat
same for me.
I did the same thing. I sold my mk2 two years ago and regretted it. I was going to buy it again but then they announced the 40. I just got the call from my AD last Friday. I enjoy it more. I thought I liked the explorer sign on the bottom more like on the mk2 but it is better on top. It’s in line with the original 1016 and just feels better for some reason. The bracelet always felt off with the mk2 as well. This one is much more harmonious. The 72 hour power reserve seals it for me. I think this is the closest to being a perfect watch. My only gripe, and this is being very picky, is the large crown. It’s a tad too big for me for now. We’ll see what I think as time goes on. Hope this helps.
Totally agree on the bigger crown being a slight gripe. @ original post I hope this helps! I echo everything this gentleman said. I believe the exp40 has the ever so slight edge over the mk2
I own the 39mm Mk1 and it’s perfect for my wrist, 40mm looks fine too. 36mm is way too small for me and most guys I know who have a 7 inch wrist and above.
Exactly this! 36mm is so dainty for those of us with larger wrists…
I like the larger size, BUT the 36mm Explorer seems more balanced.
Congrats on the new pick up my man! 👏
Appreciate it brotha!! 🍻
I prefer the look of the Oyster Perpetual 41 (Reference 124300). Similar watches, but I like the cleaner, simpler look of the Oyster Perpetual 41.
Thanks for the great review. Not sure if I like the 21mm bracelet. I guess that’s typical for Rolex enthusiasts to refuse any changes initially. 😂😂
Hahah, so true 😂 thanks for watching and the support!
Congratulations- Explorer fan 🙌🏾
Why do you wear your watch on your hand ?
Congratulations! I would love to get the measurements including the crystal width and compare it to the measurements of either the previous Explorer 39mm or the most recent Tudor Ranger.
Thank you! Will do in the full review!
Explorer at the bottom looks WAY better. Rolex font is also bigger. Dial on the m2 is better
The smaller one fits you much much better !
Great vid. Superb watch. I look forward to getting the call. I wear the 124060 and it's great as for Autumn/Winter wear but i definitely prefer the understatement of this Explorer for Spring/Summer.
What does the time of year have to do with anything?? Such a bizarre comment
Looks immediately wider to me than the MkII because of the wider bracelet. Not sure why that was necessary
Agree , that’s my slight niggle . 21mm isn’t necessary as it’s actually a small wearing 40mm . Took me a a few days to get used this with mine but would definitely prefer 20 mm
Lug to lug some say is 46 not 48 as stated, may you measure that for us?
Great explanation of the Explorer 40!
Thank you kindly!
Rolex... Where is the white dial?.. and for the 40mm version, please move the Explorer text back to the southern part of the dial right above the superlative chrono writing. Yes, just like the previous 39. Thanks for the vid, man.
Totally agree on the text! Way too squeezed up top
39mm would've been better!! Crowd gaurds would be nice. There are sharp edges underneath the watch along the edge. The OP 41 is much more comfortable to wear , yet it's supposed to be bigger. So, Rolex, go back to 39, put crowd gaurd on and get rid of the sharp edges
The crown felt sharp to me too!
Honestly I was on a list for the 40mm but got to try this one ans 36mm on… on my 7in wrist the 36 is perfect and 40 is definitely too large. Switched lists immediately
Good choice! Can’t go wrong with either imo. It really comes down to personal preference
Agreed! 36 def more understated
Will buy this watch for Mum,soon 80 years old...❤❤
nice piece, I just tried it on last week and was pleasantly surprised by the case shape, the size and the shiny dial. please take real measurements to compare cause it does wear like a 39mm
Only one size is correct for the Explorer. .. and we all know it. I‘ve got a 7.5 inch wrist, and I love the 36mm. Simple, refined, timeless. Rugged, yet elegant.
It’s whatever Rolex says is correct...
If you have a 7.5" wrist and wear the 36mm then it looks like a ladies watch on you. Fact.
Congrats for the 40, been owning the 124270, absolutely love it #369gang
Gang gang! 🙌 thanks for the support
Finally!!
Great vid
Excellent no nonsense review! I can't wait for the review of the exact measurements of this vs the older MK2. A few questions: Do you find this measures the same as a new OP41 or DJ41 (~39.5mm)? Does the total lug to lug distance including the endlinks bother you? My ONLY qualm with this is the fact the endlinks stick out well past the case but most if not all Rolex models do now. I also respect the new '36' but it was a bit too small, especially since it's smaller than a comparable DJ/OP 36. I think a field watch should be bigger than a dress watch and ultimately ended up with a DJ 36 as a result!
It makes sense for a field watch to be smaller, as it is supposed to not get in the way of whatever you're doing. For decades after the introduction of the datejust, the most used field watches remained at less than 36mm.
40mm in this watch is a perfect size! The explorer is a sports model, it should’ve always been 40 in my opinion.
Huh! How does a watch being larger help whilst playing sport? Makes zero sense. 36mm is the perfect size. 40mm will be discontinued quickly.
@@nathanf1934 it won’t. 36mm wears tiny for us with wrists over 7”. Rolex made a mistake before discontinuing the former larger 39 option. They will not discontinue the 40mm having brought it back!
@@nathanf1934 rubbish,36 is for people with tiny wrists or a dress watch ,it's 2023,39/40 IS THE perfect size for a GADA watch.
I mean... 40mm kinda takes AWAY the GADAness of this watch. At 40mm it's pretty much JUST a sports watch now.
Depends on your wrist size. Under 7 inches, the 36 is ok. But on my 7.5 inch wrist, it was way too small. This new model has the best proportions.
Nice video. I also love the Explorer but why on earth didn't Rolex use the Air King case with the crown guards? This is an "explorer's" watch, give it the crown guards! How does Rolex justify putting them on the Air King and NOT on the Explorer? I know there's no such thing as the perfect watch but this was a huge miss by Rolex IMO.
Glossy and anti reflective coating on the underside
Yes, thank you! Forgot to mention that
Do you own the new airking can you do a comparison
That 40 sure looks nice . It’s such a clean look . How much were you able to get it for ? What was the experience like with the AD?Maybe you could answer these questions in your follow up video . Thank you.
How about a 1 year review with your Exp 1?
Congratulations 🍾 🎉
Thank you!!
Absolutely beautiful, proportionately perfect , it looks perfect on your size wrist, wear it in good health . Congratulations.🎉 …..now can’t wait for the full review!.
Thank you Dean! Always great to hear from you. Looking forward to seeing you on the next video!
People saying 36 is best size, go see it in person and try it on and see a mirror reflection of it. U realize it feels small at leas tfor modrrn sizing. If u this guy’s wrist size or bigger, 36 is a no go. Stop saying something without going in and trying it on and seeing it.
Totally agree that you need to go in and try on a watch before critiquing it or hyping it up!
Exactly. I guarantee the majority of people saying that the 36 is the best Explorer have never even seen one in person, let alone owned one.
I had Reddit fun. I posted my 40 on my 7” wrist, said it was 36 and people are praising the fit and said “39/40 would be wayyyy toooo biggg” hahaah
The 36 is the sweet spot for your wrist.
I do miss that one! I enjoy my larger watches unfortunately. It’s officially a problem
Or you can buy both 😂
Can you do a comparison video of this watch and the new air king?
I will try! :)
Congratulations! 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm wearing my 40mm Explorer. I received a call from my A.D. yesterday!🙂
Lucky!! Wear it in good health 🍀
Please compare the thickness of the 39mm & 40mm , thanks
Awesome, congrats!
Thank you! Cheers!
Still looking forward to your full review :)
Check my channel page :) full review is up now
Drop the full review! I have 6.25 inch wrists -- would this watch be too big for me? Personally I think this is the best looking Rolex
I don’t think it would be too big! A lot of it depends on personal preference as well
Thanks for the review . I got mine last week, do like it a lot was a little concerned the dial would look too large , not measured it but watch looks around 38 .5 or so which is great . Only slight niggle is 21mm bracelet , do prefer 20 mm with more pronounced taper , but it’s not a deal breaker I’m used to it already .
Just got the call from my AD.... So excited, going to pick it up on Saturday. What size is your wrist?
That’s awesome, congrats!! My wrist is 6.5” in circumference
What size is your wrist? I always admired the Explorer but was busy chasing subs & GMT’s when the 39mm got discontinued. I have 7 7/8 wrist and big gorilla mitts so now way the 36 would work. My AD has a 40mm for me & Gonna go try on, hoping doesn’t still feel to small
Anyone know how many links in total does the bracelet have upon unboxing a new Explorer 40mm?
Still pumping out great videos! Congrats on the Explorer, seem to be one of your favs regardless of size. Wear it in good health man!
Thank you Elton! I appreciate it brother 🙏 something pulls me to this watch time and again. It must be true love haha
I think the new size wears perfectly…not too small or big.
How long did it take to get? I put in my request for an allocation in May 2023
So annoying they've got Explorer up the top instead of the bottom, throws the dial balance out.
And the matte dial is gone 👎🏻
100% agreed looks forced fucking rolex man
Love the bigger❤
The 36mm is actually more like a 35mm (measures around 35.2mm). I wonder if the 40mm measures smaller as well?
The 40 measures at about 38.5mm
How did you walk out of the AD with the stickers on ?
Could you compair it with the tudor ranger?
I’ll try: It’s MUCH better 😉
🤣 it’s a great piece!
congrats
Best version yet, easy,a 36mm tool watch is laughable today,it’s not the 70’s anymore.
Omg got the call today ❤️😍🌟
Congrats!!
Can we use leather strap instead of stainless steel? It will not look bad?
Leather works on this one! The maxi case models - Sub, GMT, etc. don't work as well on AM straps.
I’m looking to buy my first Rolex I work hard I was a Rolex that can withstand everything I throw at it I’m thinking either this 40 mm Explore or a no date submariner and I have very small wrists too. What would you recommend?
Submariner! It’s more durable with a ceramic bezel and won’t show wear as easily
These days people are totally surrounded by so many electronic devices so I would rather get an Omega with its anti magnetic movement. Not having to constantly be conscious of where I can place my watch is definitely a winner.
Who ever worries about that? There's a reason you don't hear Rolex owners complaining about it.
@@somerandomperson8282 those who know better thats who.
@@ashtonkee5868 I think you mean those who "think" they know better. If it was genuinely 'a problem' in everyday life then we would know about it. We are all 'around' electronics every day but we don't generally place our watches directly next to magnetic sources for any prolonged periods.
It will be nice to see the true measurements of this watch 😁👌
Should be the same as the new airking
What is mark 2? The old 39 mm?
Yep :)
@@Bu-22 Thanks for the information.
Does this have micro adjustments inside the foldover clasp and if so how many? No holes are visible from the outside.
Yes, same as the mk2
Looks like the 39 but with maxicase, i prefer the 39
I do loves me a mk2!
I am going back and forth between the 39 and 40. I have no ad relationship so I would have to pay 11k for the 40. I can get a 39 for 8.5k do you think it’s worth the 2.5k?
Hell no. I’d definitely go with the 39 MK2. It looks better and it was actually a fairly short production run of about 5 years. In the future it will be a sought after model and will definitely be worth more than the 40.
Will the 21 mm jubilee bracelet from the Datejust 41 fit the new Explorer 40mm?
I doubt it but let’s see if someone else can chime in!
Beautiful. What's your wrist size?
Thank you! My wrist is about 6.75”
