Well said, Ash! What I love about my 124270 is it is both sporty and elegant, durable and reliable, incredibly accurate, dependable and robust, disappears on the wrist, and incredibly comfortable to wear. Another bonus is it flies under the radar screen. The Explorer is a very iconic watch, with 70 years of history. And the 3-6-9 dial, combined with the Mercedes hands, makes it the easiest analog watch I own when it comes to accurately and quickly tell the time. It is a keeper and a worthy addition to anyone's collection. Cheers!

So glad you brought in the idea that the Explorer is the true watch of James Bond. Flemings Explorer was on display at the National Watch and Clock Museum in Pennsylvania some years ago as part of an exhibit of Bond watches used in the movies. Flemings daughter in a published interview stated that it was highly likely that the Explorer was indeed Bonds watch. She stated that her father gave Bond virtually all of her fathers preferences; vodka martinis, literature, women, music, automobiles, etc. She said that it would be obvious that her father, Ian Fleming, would also give Bond his choice of watches, the Rolex Explorer. By the way, It appears the only reason Sean Connery wore a Submariner, starting with "Dr. No", was budgetary. He was given the watch owned by someone in the production department to avoid buying a Rolex on a very limited film budget.
Interesting first question - I found the Explorer was a bit plain for me. Even though it’s not as cool, overtime I have realized DJ style is more for me. I’m wearing the new Tudor 41 ( I chose Champagne), which is sort of a DJ without the date, a great Jubilee with T-fit, curvy case now, and hits the spot for me size wise (sizes for everyone).
I am going with a 36mm DateJust silver dial, smooth bezel on Oyster bracelet, I like the more casual look. As far as the date with cyclops I don’t look at it as a distraction but more so of a visual point of interest. Personally I love watches with magnified dates as long as it is well executed. Enjoyed your review! 😊
You will not be disappointed. I picked mine up last month. I had a choice between the DJ and the Exp 124270. I had thought I would prefer the Explorer, but when I tried both on, there was no other choice than the DJ. I have a 19cm wrist, and the AD had been trying to convince me to size up for both watches, but the 36mm DJ is just the perfect fit. Understated, classic, and functional. I am considering the Exp 40mm for the future!
Personally, if I ever could afford an Explorer, I think (apart from my trusty Seiko 5 beater watch, which I’ll never part with) it would end up being my sole everyday watch - I think it’s pretty much suited to any occasion or dress style. I love the idea that only those in the know appreciate what the Explorer represents - it’s one of the most subtle Rolex watches. I’d go for a 36mm myself - my current Tudor BB36 is the perfect size for my slender wrist!
A big part of the enjoyment for me is the history of this model and enjoying a piece from the lineage. Most people that don’t appreciate it aren’t aware of its past, and I was one of them. I’d choose the 36mm all day long as it’s true to the 1954 original, it is also lighter and more comfortable as a daily. The latest model is by far the best. The bracelet is uniquely sized to the explorer, steeply tapered down to 14mm which feels great on the wrist. Having all the modern features in a classic package is also great, such as the superluminova, white gold hands & markers, larger numerals and superior movement also used in the no date submariner
Nice summation of the Explorer. Mine is the oft-maligned two-tone, but I love it, even if it is a bit of flashiness that’s generally out of character. Works great with a sport coat or suit, and even a nice pair of chinos paired with a dress polo. Cheers Ash!
The question isn’t when would you wear it. The question is when would you not wear it? I have a lot of watches and the Explorer 1 124270 is my favorite. I wear it 95% of the time and it flys below the radar so well. It’s also the most comfortable.
One of the other commenters called it an Officer's Watch, and it struck me that that is exactly what it is. As a former military Officer, I've been drawn to this watch, but couldn't put my finger on why. Now I know. I'm getting one. It is elegant and quietly competent.
Excellent summation. I’ll be grabbing the 40 Explorer as much first Rolex for all the same reasons you mentioned. Perfect watch for those who purchase watches for themselves, not to impress others. Great content, subbed 😎👍🏼 cheers!
An acquired taste that took me a long while to acquire. Now I enjoy wearing my 39mil, because as you say Ash it is a functional accurate under the radar Rolex.
I bought my new Explorer because of its stealth attributes which I knew going in. It probably helped that I bought a Steinhart Ocean Adventure Classic to test out whether I could live with the Explorer.
I think considering this viewers height, and the fact that he seems to own mostly complex models, the Explorer 1 in 40mm should be a good fit for him. The size will be right. And it’s always nice to have one piece that isn’t within your normal preference for style. For example, all of my watches are understated, including my explorer 1, but I also have a bigger, louder, and shinier watch that just adds some balance to the collection. There are times I’m about to walk out the door and I grab it, see it in the mirror, and realize it works. I think this chap will be surprised at how well the 40mm Explorer can help round out his collection. If he hates it, well, he’ll likely make a few dollars selling it off.
Tough decision, got the call two weeks ago for one and decided to stick with my IWC for now. The small 3 branch co did well in a two month waiting time . Still waiting with watches of Switzerland since April and I think that works better for me.
6: 33 How often do you need to check the date? I find that if I check the date in the morning, I can remember the date for the rest of the day. Just saying, not bragging.
My watch doesn’t have a date complication - however, my phone, laptop, Outlook and so on does, so once I know what today’s date is, all I need to check is the time! I even write it in my notebook! You could argue that I don’t even need a watch - I mean, even my car tells me the time and date - but I love wearing a mechanical timepiece, and I’d hate to wear one of those Apple Watch things that just about everyone I encounter these days wears! Do I need to count my steps - no, if I’ve climbed a flight of stairs or walked home from the shops, that’ll do for my daily steps quota! Do I want my emails pinged to me instantly? No - most of them are junk Mail anyway!
Explorer is the only Rolex sport watch I can wear with car window completely open. When temperature reaches over 100F it gives me the enjoyment of knowing that my watch is getting a full sunbath. Being a fully stainless steel including the bezel, I can imagine how this watch going to develop patina and the dial color in 10-20 years.
Bigger watches tend to look clunky and less classy. 36mm is the perfect and original size for a classic sports watch for men with many wrist sizes. 40mm and up is the arnold/rambo era of watches like Hublot. I loved brushed bracelet on the explorer, i tried on the submariner and felt nothing.
Picked up my Explorer 40 2 weeks ago and it’s first outing was Royal Ascot Horse Racing as it is classy but understated but wear it with jeans and a suit….get it you won’t regret it
Agree with you Ash about the explorer. I think it’s the most understated enthusiasts watch. Below the radar, but often ppl who wear it are actually into watches. I think the date just is more of a watch the general non enthusiasts go for. I was called and offered an Airking from the AD, but I turned it down. I think the too big for just a time only piece in my opinion. What you think?
The AK is a chunk and has quite a unique personality with all dial being so busy with numbers and colours. I understand why it has become something of an icon, but it is too big for me at 40mm.
I bought an Explorer homage in 36 mm. Yeah, I don’t like how small it looks on my 7.25 inch wrist. Glad I did this first before paying a few thousand dollars on the real thing. The 40mm Explorer has my interest. I only have 6 watches which I rotate for each day of the week. I have a watch for each category: Dive, Drive, Field, Fly/GMT, Classic/ Dress, & Sport. My favorite Rolex is the Oyster Perpetual in champagne. I think that’s the most versatile in the Rolex range. A timeless piece yet quintessentially Rolex.
The 36mm is closer to 35mm and aimed at women. It's child-sized. The 40mm is closer to 38mm and has a far more masculine - and thicker - bracelet, which complements the overall look of the timepiece. The 36mm also comes across more of a dress watch than a classic sports watch because of its diminutive size.
I love the Explorer 1. I was fortunate enough to buy it from my AD to gift it for my dad's 60th birthday and as his retirement gift. I also love how understated it is and would personally wear it but it would be a bit difficult to compete with my current collection already.
It’s been years, but I remember reading in one of the novels that Bond had his Rolex put on a Spiedel expandable band, because he “disliked clasp bracelets.” Why? I suspect that’s because he could have used it as a knuckle-duster.
IMO sell them all (or maybe just keep the Daytona if it is your grail watch). Buy 40mm Explorer. Buy a gold Day Date. Daily wear covered. Dressing up covered. I wouldn't touch AP. If I wanted something else over a DD, I'd buy a Nautilus. I have a 39mm mk2 Explorer. I love it. It really is perfect as an everyday piece. Only 2 people have ever noticed it on my wrist and commented in well in over a year. I like that. I buy watches for me to enjoy, not to flex over others.
Buy!!! I got mine 224270 since three weeks and i love it the most. Unbelievable its an other world. Perfekt elegant toolwatch. Best and the flat oystercase is the beatyest in my opinion
I have a similar collection to you Ash ( Sub , Rootbever etc.) and I also have the 36 explorer ... On my 7.5 wrist it can feel small but ... Sometimes that's just what I need ... My dress watch is usually a reverso but the 36 explorer makes a very good option .. Good advice and your points are well put .
I own one Rolex. I bought it over 40 years ago when there were no waiting lists, etc. and prices were less obscene. I have worn it all over the world, from the jungles of Madagascar to the deserts of Arabia. It has held up and functioned well. In all that time I have only ever once had someone comment or ask whether it is a Rolex. That was on a train from London to Manchester and I was dressed like a scruffy urchin. The guy was probably perplexed how some one in faded jeans and a scruffy tee shirt could wear an expensive watch. Probably thought I stole it!😳 It’s been a good watch. But, let’s face it, they’re a mass produced item. Well made, no doubt. They are sort of like Toyotas. Were it not for a very, very good marketing campaign and a (possibly) contrived short supply they would not be worth what people seem to be prepared to pay for them. I have read that, in inflation adjusted terms, the early submariners sold for the equivalent of about $1200 in today’s money, i.e. 1/10th of what suckers pay for them now. There are a lot of watches that perform the same function, have very similar specifications, last just as long, but cost a fraction of Rolexs. It seems to a case of, ‘the more you pay, the more it’s worth’. I got mine serviced recently and it came back all clean and shiny, so I decided that I should not wear it doing gardening and get it scratched up again. So, I bought a Citizen eco-drive off Amazon for a about $120. It keeps better time than my Rolex. It is more legible (black dial vs champagne). It has similar WR and shock ratings. I can leave it sitting for a few days and it will not stop on me. Of course, it will not impress a watch snob, or some gold digging thot. I do not care. Also, I have never understood the notion of collecting, watches or anything else. I buy stuff for a purpose, not just to “have” it and look at it. The idea of a ‘summer watch’ is ludicrous to me, especially if it cost $5K, or $10K or more? Each to his own, of course. People pay over $300K for a Richard Mille watch or a Patek Phillip, but I won’t ever be one of them. Then again, it is unlikely that some mugger will ever shank me for my watch, either.
Instead of another Rolex, I went with the Glashutte Original SEAQ 39.5mm with blue dial and fully brushed bracelet. Fully in house movement and keeps better time than my GMT Master in all six positions. My wrist is only 7.25 inches. If I had a larger wrist I would have gotten the SEAQ day date. These watches are significantly better finished than the rolexes and I can read the dial easier than the 224270 I was going to purchase. The best is no one knows what it is and are not intimidated until they are standing next to me. I put it on a Glashutte rubber strap and I can wear it anywhere without concern of drawing a potential thief’s attention. Only 200 of my model are handmade each year so no one else in the boardroom will have one.
i wear a 36mm explorer as a daily , it ticks all the boxes for me . But too many stainless steel sports watches in that line up , time to look towards the holy trinity .
I'm interested in one and only one Rolex. What would you buy a Datejust 41 Azurro Blue, a no date Submariner or the Rolex Explorer?? thanks in advance!
Another Great video ASH!! I picked up the Explorer 39MM MK 1 with the solid white gold 3,6,9 . I think I had correspondence in the comment section of one of your previous videos with you about getting a call for the Steel/Gold Submariner 41MM (Bumblebee) on my Birthday in May. Out of all my watcher these are the two that I find constantly on my 7 1/2 inch wrist now. I am waiting for a call for the Explorer II Polar white dial. I think that will round out my Rolex collection. I do see myself down the road picking up a Batgirl. Like you I find the GMT a great complication. Maybe you can do a state of your watch collection once again. Be well and have a great day!
You could easily go either way with a wrist that size, but my advice would be to never buy a watch, unless you have tried it on. Undoubtedly, they always look/feel different when they are on your wrist.
Alex has a wonderful and very useful collection. I believe the time has come for the chap up his game and move into the haute horology sphere. Doesn’t necessarily have to be trinity level but there is, as we all know, a whole world out there just waiting for us watch nuts to discover…. But that’s a very hard thing to do for a Rolex addict.
True words….. I have a Submariner, a Milgauss GV,a Batgirl and a Patek 5980 …. real beautys….and I‘am proud of these Collection but the wristtime belongs my Explorer 214270. I agree your opinion about this underrated Rolex Watch …. But is this not the secret of this Beauty ?😏
Ash - Great video, as always! Thanks so much! I just purchased an Explorer I (124270) a few weeks ago, and I can't stop looking at it. It's a perfect watch for my wrist and my lifestyle. However, at the time I was "put on the list" with the AD, I was also inquiring about the GMT II "Batgirl" (jubilee) which is (IMHO) a very different watch. It just so happens the Explorer I came first. What to do (if I get the call)? Thankfully, I have the resources, BUT I am a practical person and may not "need" both at this point in my life. What does the GMT give you, esthetically wise, that the Explorer I doesn't? And, do you find the GMT II uncomfortable, after wearing the Explorer I? Thanks!
Oh they are very different and serve different purposes in my watch-wearing life. The GMT is actually a very comfortable and pleasantly proportioned watch indeed and wears like a dream. If the GMT is offered it is a no brainer - bay it and ponder afterwards. If you really don't like it, you can move it along and there is no risk of financial loss (most likely a pleasant gain). Enjoy the Explorer - it is such a perfect watch.
Such a tough question, but I think I would recommend Orient as the brand of choice for a great, starter-level, automatic sports watch. The famed Orient Mako range are hard to beat and astonishing value for money!
@@TheChapsGuidethat’s a great recommendation - I owned a Mako for many years - really high quality automatic watches, with in-house movements. The other benefit is that a lot of people in the UK have never heard of Orient, so they’re quite exclusive timepieces. I’d also recommend Certina - they make some lovely Titanium dive watches, and also the Prince DS, which is a more affordable equivalent to an Aqua Terra. Hamilton also make some lovely automatic tool watches too.
Tudor Ranger is probably closest But if its the Explorer you prefer, sometimes it’s better to wait, save a little longer and reward yourself when you are ready 👌🏼
Love your channel, but there is one slight correction regarding Ian Fleming. Fleming did owna Rolex explorer 1016, but it can’t be the watch. He had in mind for his characters use as the model Fleming owned, did not exist until 1959. The first mention of Bonds watch was in 1954. Fleming also directly states that it’s a Rolex oyster perpetual in on her Majesty Secret Service.
Te Explorer I is amazing, I surely would go for it. But unless you’re an AD… you need an AP or a PP my friend! Don’t be an advertisement for just one brand.
The Rolex Explorer has been worn by British author Ian Fleming, British zoologist Sir David Attenborough, British watchmaker Roger W Smith and during MoD sponsored expeditions. Last but not least, between 1979 - 1989 the Rolex Explorer 1016 has been issued to flying personnel of German Air Force & Marine as chronometer for long distance flights. #MoonwatchUniverse
I stepped down from some higher end pieces (Day Date, PP Aquanaut) to the Explorer. I wear it every day and couldn’t be happier with it! So if the question asker buys it, I’m sure it will find its place in his collection. Sounds like he’s an addict anyway so will likely grab one!

@@NK-bh5gw The 36mm date just is pure class
Silver dial smooth bezel, excellent combo
It is elegant and quietly competent.
buy 100% - so a versatile watch. love it
Excellent summation.
Love the 2 tone explorer - classy with a touch of subtle gold.
I bought my new Explorer because of its stealth attributes which I knew going in. It probably helped that I bought a Steinhart Ocean Adventure Classic to test out whether I could live with the Explorer.
One can’t really go wrong with the Explorer. It’s a very versatile watch.
Explorer not Explorer "1"...
Tough decision, got the call two weeks ago for one and decided to stick with my IWC for now. The small 3 branch co did well in a two month waiting time . Still waiting with watches of Switzerland since April and I think that works better for me.
Love mine. 36mm feels like perfect size.
Picked up my Explorer 40 2 weeks ago and it’s first outing was Royal Ascot Horse Racing as it is classy but understated but wear it with jeans and a suit….get it you won’t regret it
You were so lucky!!! The waiting is so short.
At the end of the journey of Rolex it will be an Explorer. Simplicity is the end goal when you have experienced so many watches.
I love the Explorer 1. I was fortunate enough to buy it from my AD to gift it for my dad's 60th birthday and as his retirement gift. I also love how understated it is and would personally wear it but it would be a bit difficult to compete with my current collection already.
Explorer not Explorer 1…
I adore the Explorer, recently tried one on and it’s a must buy in the future for myself! Great video as always. Many thanks
It’s been years, but I remember reading in one of the novels that Bond had his Rolex put on a Spiedel expandable band, because he “disliked clasp bracelets.” Why? I suspect that’s because he could have used it as a knuckle-duster.
Do you have any experience with vacheron constantin or audemars piguet? If not have you considered ever a brand like either or Patek?
IMO sell them all (or maybe just keep the Daytona if it is your grail watch). Buy 40mm Explorer. Buy a gold Day Date. Daily wear covered. Dressing up covered. I wouldn't touch AP. If I wanted something else over a DD, I'd buy a Nautilus. I have a 39mm mk2 Explorer. I love it. It really is perfect as an everyday piece. Only 2 people have ever noticed it on my wrist and commented in well in over a year. I like that. I buy watches for me to enjoy, not to flex over others.
The 39mm mk 2 Explorer can be picked up at good prices with the current market being flat, just sold my minty 2020 for £6k. Took a while though!
I’m on the fence for a 36mm explorer and a 34mm OP. Leaning toward the OP since the design is so simple and clean. Really flies under the radar.
You cannot go wrong with those choices. I was wearing my Exp yesterday and was reminded of its simple beauty!
Buy!!! I got mine 224270 since three weeks and i love it the most. Unbelievable its an other world. Perfekt elegant toolwatch. Best and the flat oystercase is the beatyest in my opinion
Great video, very much enjoyed it. Your videos helped make my decision to purchase the Rolex Explorer 40. Cheers
I love my Rolex Explorer 36mm
I was told last year I could wait up to 5 years for an Explorer 36mm, sod that.
I most likely do not get 124270 since 36mm feels small in my wrist. However new40mm 224270 looks very tempting
I still want one but i also want a Vacheron Constantin Overseas in Rose gold blue dial date only. I think i still want to buy both.
I have the 40mm on order but not sure about it until I see it in person
That’s amazing the Bond watch was actually the Explorer!! I also agree with the cyclops. I prefer Rolex without. Great content. Thanks for the vid!!
Na he mistaken the Rolex models, first James Bond watch was actually the Submariner 6538 on a nato strap.
That was the first watch seen with Bond on screen. Fleming actually wore an Explorer and only ever referred to Bonds watch as an oyster perpetual
@@frankv7068 he mentioned that Sean Connery wore a sub. Also read that the writer owned a Explorer 1016.
@@johnt2694 I missed that, yea that’s correct.
@@TheChapsGuide I mistakenly thought you said the actor wore the Explorer, but yes the writer wore the Explorer and the actor the Sub, my bad.
Probably thought I stole it!😳
It’s been a good watch.
An amazing story of watch ownership. I hope my own journey with my small collection of watches will be able to mirror yours sir.
39mm for me ...Perfect size
Love my Explorer! All your points excellently made as alway! Ash, I love your shirt!! Where is it from?
Costco
Same sentiments about having a non-date watch and the ugly cyclops lens. You are a man of taste and I'd like to think I am too. Hahah!
Well... there's a 1 in 200 chance someone will be wearing it in your boardroom lol
You’re still an insecure person.
Most beautiful versatile Rolex imho
Love your video...thanks ..now I have to look for one ...
i wear a 36mm explorer as a daily , it ticks all the boxes for me . But too many stainless steel sports watches in that line up , time to look towards the holy trinity .
I'm interested in one and only one Rolex. What would you buy a Datejust 41 Azurro Blue, a no date Submariner or the Rolex Explorer?? thanks in advance!
Sub.
I personally prefer the Tudor BB36 to the Explorer!
Buy!
You are so right wich what you said and explained 👍🏻
6.75 inch wrist here. Do you think the 40mm or 36mm would look better? I'm 5'10" but stocky build. My "sweet spot" is 39mm.
You could easily go either way with a wrist that size, but my advice would be to never buy a watch, unless you have tried it on. Undoubtedly, they always look/feel different when they are on your wrist.
@@TheChapsGuide Many thanks! 😊
Alex has a wonderful and very useful collection. I believe the time has come for the chap up his game and move into the haute horology sphere. Doesn’t necessarily have to be trinity level but there is, as we all know, a whole world out there just waiting for us watch nuts to discover…. But that’s a very hard thing to do for a Rolex addict.
you've got them all alex might as well get another u can clearly afford it
True words…..
Really enjoying the regular content, thanks very much Ash :)
Glad you enjoy it!
@@TheChapsGuide Ash - Thanks so much for your response! In that case., "if" I happen to get that call, I will certainly buy it. Thanks again!
Do you have any recommendations for a starter/affordable watch similar to the Explorer?
Such a tough question, but I think I would recommend Orient as the brand of choice for a great, starter-level, automatic sports watch. The famed Orient Mako range are hard to beat and astonishing value for money!
@@TheChapsGuide Thank you very much!
Tudor Ranger is probably closest
But if its the Explorer you prefer, sometimes it’s better to wait, save a little longer and reward yourself when you are ready 👌🏼
The Explorer came out in 1953 so you are wrong.
Love the summer shirt! Where did you get it?
Costco. £12.
@@TheChapsGuide what a deal!
Too late Ash. Already bought the 36mm Explorer from an AD 2 weeks ago. The moment they rang - shut up and swipe my credit card.
Te Explorer I is amazing, I surely would go for it. But unless you’re an AD… you need an AP or a PP my friend! Don’t be an advertisement for just one brand.
I really thought you were going to smush that bug on the table.

Explorer & the air king great wearable watch’s , I love my air king
I’d love to know how much other stuff he’s had to buy to get that many Rolex’s
I have a 36mm available if someone wants it. Yes it's the best.
Another excellent video sir ❤
Thanks a lot
The DateJust is very noticeable, and the Explorer is not. So if you need something more understated, then the Explorer makes a lot of sense.
Fantastic video. Love the commentary and your closing message about wearing and enjoying your watches while making them a part of you.

My AD made me wait 10 days for the Explorer 40mm 224270... Don't know how I managed, really.
When James Bond came out in 1953 Casino Royale, I don’t think the Rolex submariner submariner has been out very long if it was even out at all

He doesn't need another watch. Maybe think about leaving a watch for someone else since there are waitlists.
Agree - but explorer is best daily. One watch per brand is a good rule instead of 10 bloody rollies
If he can afford it, why not? The dealer called him after all.

For a couple grand cheaper, yes.
