  • Did you know this church policy indirectly keeps children safe? We didn’t until we talked with Jennifer Roach!
    What other policies or practices can you think of with unintended positive effects?

    The problem with that is the kids aren't protected within their ward boundaries. Abusers don't just live outside the boundaries of your ward.

    In theory. But when the members of that ward protect the abuser because they are in a position of authority, this point is lost. It has happened many, many times when the bishop sweeps it under the rug and allows it to continue.

      @lindamartinez7006 it happens a lot but the church uses it's resources to silence victims in court, bishops don't report abuse, etc. It is seldom actually dealt with and instead shushed. There are resources out there that have numerous accounts available to learn about and how the church failed to protect victims.

  • @ellenc48
    @ellenc48 3 месяца назад +22

    My church does background checks. You can't work with kids without it. We also require reporting of abuse. I'm a recent case in Bisbee, AZ, a LDS lawyer argued that not only did the bishop have the right to not report an abuser but so did the ward clerk. That allowed the abuser to continue abusing all of his children for years. How does that protect children?

    • @katewhitehouse4836
      @katewhitehouse4836 3 месяца назад +2

      The church I go to does background checks as well, especially if your in the children's program. The minister, the custodian etc., And if you want to join it takes time, interviews and communication with your previous church, and voted in or denied by the members, it usually takes several months. And they check the police predator website as well. Women andd Children's safety is priority .

    • @katewhitehouse4836

      And if your a new candidate for membership and want to be baptized you have to take Bible studies with a church member or the minister for 12 lessons. Not LDS, but other churches are careful too.

      Then the Arizona legislature needs to update the law. Clergy-penitent privilege is a very old legal concept with different application across jurisdictions. Take it up with the State government if you disagree. The Church doesn't create law.

    This is hardly effecetive bc abusers get pardoned when they confess to their bishop. They rarely get reported to the police bc of priest penitent privelege. They get callings after confessing or if a new bishop is called he may not know the abusers history. Many churches do background checks for callings. This church does not.

    Yeah but if someone in the ward is doing something in the ward you won't be told because that's gossip. You can tell the bishop but if it's a guy 50/50 he keeps it in the boys club because he doesn't want the problem, doesn't want to have a problem ward, doesn't want people to know his 'discernment' didn't catch it, extra. If you tell headquarters they will just get you with their lawyers who gaslight you or pay you off if they're forced to. There are class action suits about church abuse! 🤮
