    Hi, was curious if you know how difficult it might be to replace the eyepiece on one of these. I'm not knowledgeable but let me try to explain and see if I'm correct. You have the eyepiece, then there is another piece that slides/clips/attaches to that for focus control, then you have the rubber eye cup that attaches last.
    All I have on mine is the eyepiece, no clip on piece for focus and no rubber eye cup. My eyepiece does work, however the vertical rails that the focus piece would attach to are chipped and broken, so I don't think the focus piece would slide on with the condition mine is in.
    There is a guy on ebay that has all the pieces to replace the entire eyepiece but back to my original question. I haven't found a full tear down video on the FX1, so was curious if you knew.
    Thanks

    I could sense the frustration at the conundrum. It is similar to how I respond to these sorts of things, but nobody can argue that patience is not the key. Only a little bit of valuable experience brings that. Nice job, and wow what a picture it provides. I know there are $50k, 100, hell I bet there is even a half million dollar camera or something but doesn't matter - this one rocks out hard. Enjoy!

    • @MrChrisRP

      Similarly, and pointing it out just because of my knowledge and experience and intellectualism: The conundrum you faced is exactly a tactic of narcissists, at times. They set up situations where you are damned if you do or damned if you don't, hence their now newly-acquired ability to make pretend (falsely) that they have the upper hand against you. Think about it! :)

    This is usually a 2 minute repair, as you can access the drop switch on the mechanism from the open door and put a couple of drops of Servisol in it.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 года назад +1

      Yes I did access it from the open door. Once I could actually see the switch. Done that many times on 8mm. I did exactly that on a digital 8 deck a few months ago. This is only about the 3rd miniDV deck I have had open. The only ones I ever serviced was the VX1000. Never got a chance to see many, because they were usually write offs. Cameras would come in that had water damage from all the idiots taking them out on boats. All the newer cameras had a label on the inside of the box advising not to return to dealer for problems. Even my tiny little HDR-HC3, when the lens started acting up on that one while under warranty, I shipped it off to Sony and let them deal with it. That one is still one of my favorite cameras from an engineering standpoint. Probably the best tape that Sony ever made. With that real xenon flash tube for the stills camera. Fantastic. Best of both worlds. An HD video camera and a 4.0 megapixel point and shoot camera with a real flash built in. The real engineering marvel though, and I don't think many will argue on this is the pocket DSC TX100V. 16.2 megapixel, stills with a real xenon flash, OLED screen and full HD video that shoots in 60p and small enough to fit in a pocket. Yes I know cell phones will do that now but they don't have a real flash tube.

    Quick question: Would you shoot your videos on a modern full frame (35mm) mirrorless camera, like the Sony a7 III? I'm looking to buy a used a7 Mark III because I want something for both videos and photography. But primarily for video.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 месяцев назад

      Full frame cameras are fine. I have an a77 which is an old apc size sensor. It shoots great 1080p60 video and 24mp stills and I have a couple or lenses for it but I prefer my video cameras. I have an FDR ax100, ax33 and ax53. All 3 shoot 4k video. The ax100 has a 1" sensor 20mp, full manual control and can shoot a still that is pretty close to my 24mo stills camera. It has not only a flip out lcd screen but also an OLED eyepiece which is dead on accurate. My alpha 77 also has the OLED eyepiece. WUSIWUG in that eyepiece. 12x optical zoom is great. My ax33 is more for travel. It's small, has an evf (not OLED but lcos) so it also looks good but not as good as OLED. The stabilization is 2nd to none. 4 axis stabalizibg. 10x zoom lens and is also capable of shooting 20.5 stills. Of course these are jpg only. My dslr will do jpg and raw images. One of the advantages of video cameras is the length you can record. The stills cameras (at least the ones I have tried) stop recording at 29:59. Video camera will shoot till the memory card is full. For long form event recording this is a must. Why do the others stop at 29:59? Because is Europe there is something like an 18% VAT on video cameras. A video camera is one defined as being able to record longer then 30 minutes without stopping. So the manufactures limited the video recording to 1 second under that limit to skirt taxes. Now that might have changed but my a77 certainly has that limit. Other than that I just find the video camera is better laid out for video and a stills camera is better laid out for shooting stills. Just ergonomics mostly. Things like tiltable eyepieces and flip out screens that can be rotated for selfie shoots. Yes my dslr screen can flip around too but not on a tripod it can't.

    My cassette tray is stuck in the up position and the cassette mechanism (where you load a tape) door won't open either. The camcorder makes an awful sound almost like a stripped gear sound (which i'm guessing is why the tray is not going down). Not sure why the cassette mech door won't open. I tried to mess with that switch and it hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

    Hi. Do you have any suggestions for going tapeless with this model? My FX1 is rejecting all tapes as it seems the rubber roller has fallen off. Have you heard of HVR-MRC1 or HVR-DR60? Both built for V1 but can be used as external recorders via FireWire. Therefore eliminating the need for tapes with this unit. I’m wondering if you know other ways to perhaps use newer external recorders like Atamos Ninjas (that take hdmi inputs). Is there a way to output FireWire 4 pin, or component to hdmi?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад +2

      The firewire runs under colorspace 4:2:0 whereas you can get higher colorspace directly from camera. I gave up on those old cameras years ago and record directly to sd cards. Firewire output is limited to 25mbits.
      Ninja would be a great option but fx1 doesn't have HDMI only component. So that leaves digitizing the component output.

    • @Dyl_Cam
      @Dyl_Cam Год назад

      @@12voltvids The FireWire should be just as good as tapes right? If not slightly better?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Год назад

      @@Dyl_Cam The firewire just sends the digital data that is read off the tape directly out to the computer. There's no analog signal generation it's just the data. The problem is that if dropouts occur on the tape the dropouts will not be corrected and that erroneous data will be sent out the firewire and store it in the file. This causes headaches for nonlinear editors because they will interpret this corrupt data as pixelation or the wrong colors or all kinds of weird things and you'll typically have about a half a second of disrupted video. HDD was far more problematic than standard definition DV because standard definition used a fixed 5 to 1 Mjpeg compression. In other words each frame was a full frame. Hdv on the other hand used a long GOP mpeg2 stream. If you've lost a packet you lost the rest of the frames until the next keyframe. So one glitch resulted in 15 frames lost. Now I have found that if I play an hdv tape and I capture it with my new cloner alliance box pro, those glitches off the tape do not appear and this is because the camera or the playback machine has memory inside it and when I drop out occurs it just displays the image that was currently in memory from the previous frame. I will be doing a demo soon I don't have a date when I'm going to make the video as I've got a few things to work on in the shop and this will be done once I have some time but I'm going to make a more in-depth presentation for the cloner alliance box. It will be all demo footage from different sources. I will show it at the three different quality settings from both VHS, betamax, 8 mm and high 8, mini DV and digital 8, hdv, dvd. I will capture the same segments using multiple capture devices. Those devices will be a hauppague hdpvr, a Panasonic DVD recorder, a Toshiba DVD recorder and a Sony GVD700 analog to DV encoder as well as a digital 8 camera that will digitize analog tapes and send output via firewire and of course the cloner alliance box pro, using composite, component and HDMI inputs. The cloner alliance will be set to upscale everything to 1080p at 60 frames. All the other sources will be captured at their native resolution for both ntsc and pal tapes and DVDs. The standard definition recordings will be scaled to 1080 in my editing software. So the frame size will all be the same this will be a great way to compare analog tapes being converted to HD compatible signals using the various pieces of equipment that I have access to. as I previously said I don't have a date to when I'm going to record and produce this video but it will be sometime in the next month I would think. As the weather starts to turn against us and I won't be heading out on my bike I'll have more time to play around with this equipment. Of course as long as stuff keeps coming in to be repaired I give those higher priority but there will be a longer video coming out soon to compare the different types of digitizing equipment that I have. I think you'll enjoy it.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад +1

      That ticking and squeaking sound is called stiction and it is the tape physically sticking to the guides and rollers. The tape is breaking down. Look up sticky shed syndrome.
      It has plagued audio users for years and unfortunately it is starting to raise it's ugly head in video tape too. Another problem is mold if tapes are not stored correctly. This is why everyone needs to get everything they treasure on video tape NOW as in today. Don't want for tomorrow or next week or next year. If you have valuable content that you want to preserve get it on DVD or Bluray disk media and to a hard drive. I have DVD disks that are well over 20 years old that play perfectly and CDR disks even older than that that still play.
      If people were still buying DVD and BD players the manufactures would still be making them, but because people stopped buying many companies stopped making them.
      Everyone is throwing their eggs in one basket. They are putting stuff on their computer, or external hard drives but all it takes is one drop and everything is gone. USB sticks don't last much beyond 7 years, and SSD is just as unreliable as the data must be refreshed and rewritten to different sectors or it can just vanish, so not good for long store storage where it is not powered up regularly. Cloud storage is also a red herring. What is to say that down the road the cloud provider is not sold to another company that revises their user agreement and then jacks up the monthly storage to eye watering levels. Once everyone has everything in the cloud, or changed theor policy to now own all your content and grant themself permission to use your photos for their own gain.
      Everything you value needs to be backed up onto multiple formats. When I do digital archiving for my customers 9 out of 10 take their footage back on a USB stick or hard drive and a second copy on DVD or Bluray.

      What do you want it for?
      Video or stills. If the answer is video grab a used fdrax33 and be done. That is one of the best little cameras I own. Small, optical stabalization, 4k video 1080p60 video and it will shoot 20.6mp stills. I have one and shot hundreds of my RUclips videos with it. I use an ax53 now as it has a longer zoom lens 20x vs 10 so I can get closer close up shots without having to bring the camera in closer. The ax100 is also an even better choice but costs quite a bit more but has larger sensor so can shoot with a shallow depth of field. When traveling i usually take the little one just because the quality is fantastic and i am not carrying around a large camera but for photography trips I use my ax100 for both stills and video.

Plug it into an older tv that doesn't support PAL and it won't work. Fortunately all the new TV's support multi system video.

    I had a nightmare with a prosumer Sony VX2000 3 chip that had random horrible hum in the audio. You could turn it on and get nothing and the next time a horrible hum. I sent it off twice to Sony only to have it returned with the same issue. I sent it off again and waited for a month or two only to be told that they can’t find any issue and that they were returning the camera to me even after sending them a tape recorded with the hum issue. It ended up with me getting very irritable with the support team and asking for their supervisor and by that time they had a new model so they sent me the new model with no issues. What a relief that was!!

      SD cards are not much better. You are recording to a file on a device that holds a filesystem. There are so many abstractions in the way that any one of them can fail and break the file, entirely, or half way, or the entire card itself. Give me flash media that does not act like a disc, and I will love it. Tape has problems because its old, but as a recording media it is much more resilient to "issues" than flash as tape is simply a dumb stream of bytes. As long as the tape does not chew up, and damage to the tape or video stream can be bypassed by simply letting it play.
      Like HDV tape, flash based recorders use the transport stream format (unless they are my DSLR which crazily uses MOV), as that file format also has that resiliency. Errors in that file thus don't damage the rest of the file beyond that point, only the damaged portion is affected. Transport stream is also used in TV broadcasts for that reason, its great. However the medium that is used will affect the resiliency, flash is not anything like tape. All of its "improvements" are merely seen that way because they are just more convenient. But when that SD card just dies on you, which they do, the entire card dies. Everything goes with it. I'd rather use tape than hope that I have enough money for data recovery services, and they don't usually recover SD cards as they are not worth as much as recovering a HDD.
      I have plenty of SD cards in many devices, so its not like I dont use them. I have a bunch of them in front of me, my DSLR, a cheap model, only uses one and I never let data sit on it more than a few hours. I just respect the fact that a medium, and recording format that is able to ignore errors, digital and physical ones, is superior to a format that is only liked because of convenience. A friend of mine has had a much more different experience with SD cards that he simply puts into the digital camera, where it happily stores the photos, then he phones me because one of the cards has died totally and the other card is working but half the pictures are a corrupted mess and a third are "gone" which I usually get back using recovery software.
      What make were these cards? Well, the supposed king of flash: sandisk.
      Oh year, one of my 64GB flash drives died on the shelf. 64GB gone, in a flash. Luckily knowing this failure is possible I never store data on flash, only transport it.
      So, tape is old, superior and old and will jam up and become annoying. SD is convenient, but that comes at a cost. When my HDV camcorder needs replacing, what will I get... well the only smart thing is to get a 2 SD recorder. Have the camcorder record to 2 cards at once, that's what the pro's do in pro level DSLR's and camcorders, for the reasons I stated. Oh and no, never get HUGE insanely big SD cards. No 128GB cards, unless I'm doing 4K which is unlikely as I don't have a 4K TV so no point yet. Nope, small SD cards, different manufacturers, dual recording, swap frequently = less chance of losing your holiday video.
      Oh and I always stress the SD card to rest it. I write to every sector several times, a proper test, I have killed weaker cards that way.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 года назад

      @@dlarge6502 SD cards can and do fail. I have had one fail. I was having problems recently on my newer camera with a Sandisk card, but it was more of a speed issue. Not fast enough. Didn't lose any files, just the camera ran out of buffer. I believe the old camera didn't have the issue as the camera had more memory internal and just buffered the video until the card caught up.
      Tape however has so many issues I can't overlook. Drop outs for starters. Especially when dealing with a long GOP like HDV. A dropout results in losing 1/2 second of video.
      I have had more issues with USB thumb drives. Controller chip dies and no more access. In fact I have only had 1SD card actually fail and that was because the contacts wore out from putting it in the camera so many times. I don't use SD cards for long term storage though. I shoot and then transfer right away to external removable hard drives. When I travel I haul my laptop with me to download daily.
      I do have software I bought that has recovered damaged video files.

      It looks cool. You sure know you have it after hauling it around all day. It draws attention. When i have been filming in parks i have on more than one occassion been asked for my film permit. In certain parks when i was doing weddings the city wanted a film permit, because a wedding was considered a commercial shoot. I was more then happy to surprise the couple when the got the bill with the filming permit and receipt attached. I should only say it happened once. I had been working with the photographer and wedding party and i was pinched by an enforcement officer as we were breaking down and packing up. The couple didn't even see what was going on and the stills photographer and his assistant saw the bylaw guy approach me and he hightailed it the other way. Was issued a 500 ticket for filming in a city park without a permit. The guy had been watching us work for awhile and waited till we were done as to not cause a scene and got me while i was loading equipment in my truck. I showed it to the couple at the reception and they couldn't believe it but in the end they paid. I'm so glad that I don't shoot weddings anymore. Now had I been using a small camera it would not have drawn any attention because I could have blended in just like a guest. I was shooting with a betacam when this happened.

    That Sony HDR FX1 came my way after the owner had dropped it over the side of a speedboat on a corporate shoot. It was the 1st time he used it & it floated just long enough for him to pick it up. It was ruined & when i opened it the seawater had destroyed almost every copper piece of track or ic pin. I wrote a report as to why the unit was not worth repairing, especially the lens which was still full of water! 8 weeks later the owners insurance company came to me demanding why i had advised he make a claim. Their assessor became an asshat accusing me of all the damage! Then they shipped the camera to an independent ultrasonics lab that cleaned stuff where they tanked it & returned it. Most chips were gone from PCBs and the optical elements had changed color. The insurance company demanded that now it was clean i could make it work or they'd sue me.... A letter from my solicitor saved my butt although the whole nightmare had me out of pocket almost $1000 & no path for any compensation.
